My bestie and I have nothing but good things to say about our experience. The online booking was super easy, the staff were helpful and kind, and we had a blast! We rented a tandem kayak and went out on the bay for an hour. By the time we walked the boat down and back it does eat away at your time, but it's still a fun experience. This is something you can easily do with friends, family, or for a date! I would highly recommend.

Blue waters and friendly faces await you.

Bellingham is lucky to have this nonprofit boating center. It's clear their mission is to make water sports accessible to all income and experience brackets. You can rent a kayak for as little as $15 per hour! They have a full compliment of gear you need to get on the water as well as the NICEST staff to help beginners thru experts. Brandi, the paddle board instructor gave me super practical tips results that got this paddle board newbie finding my new favorite hobby. They are situated next to the train station with a great launch spot to enjoy the gorgeous bay. I just love it here!

A beautiful way to experience Bellingham Bay...

Durango was the instructor for my basic sea kayak course and did a great job. I'd go back there again for more courses.

The person working at the rental shack was super friendly and helpful with directing us to our rental boat. We pushed off from shore peddling backward until we reached a good spot to turn ourselves around and move forward with our adventure. Much to our disappointment the boat would only turn to the left no matter which direction you try to steer it in while peddling forward. So at this point we are just doing circles in place lol. We then reversed ourselves back to shore and decided to try the second peddle boat that was brought out by mistake. The second boat was even worse lol. The second boat had the same issue of only circling left when peddling forward, only this boat had a broken seat back which also made peddling a struggle. We went back to the rental shack to return our life jackets, the person working was super nice and offered us another boat, but we declined because at that point we were over it. The rental person did reach out to the owner for us and we got a refund about a week later. I just can't help but wonder about the condition of their other boats since we tried two different boats and both we broken.

Erick, the proprietor of Northwest Traps, has a pretty interesting story. After blasting out of…read moreBellingham on an Alaskan fishing boat at an early age and spending subsequent years crabbing and fishing, he got to wondering if there was a better way to build a stackable crab pot. If only he knew how to weld, right? So as soon as he gets back to shore, he teaches his own ass how to weld -- all so he can make this pot idea a reality. After testing and refining the pot with his fellow fishing community, he's now known for producing the best pots in the region -- so much sturdier and more durable than the competition, with super exacting welds and webbing. They are meant to last for years and years, and they do. He's now busy building larger commercial traps for many of the local tribes, along with outfitting the biggest fisheries in Canada and Alaska. Could you buy a crappy Big 5 pot for 90 bucks? Yes, yes you could. And it will bend out of shape and rust all to shit in minutes and you'll be just one more person throwing garbage into the sea (and probably pulling back WAY less crab when it's all said and done). People seem to feel his pots radically out-trap the others, which is why he has a faithful following. He hooked me up with a sweet monster pot for my paddleboard, and I couldn't believe the quality. I also went on a crab charter and watched his pots pulled up, one after the other, out of Bellingham Bay with WAY over the legal limit of Dungeness in each one. So yes, this is the place you want.

Prices are pretty reasonable and we chose the two hour option due to our limited time during the sunset period. The staff were busy but friendly and assisted us with our kayaks. They will brief you about the kayaks, safety and where to go. Now, I would select a longer time to truly appreciate Deep Cove's natural beauty when you aren't dodging other kayaks or boats. The traffic can be somewhat chaotic in the summer time and it is main area for a lot of boaters heading out of the cove. We kayak around three islands within our two hour option, but didn't relax as much as we want. Again, the salt water, slight wind, and being in the 80's made it a wonderful but brief time.

Great place to kayak, incredible views, definitely worth a visit…read more Equipment and gear were great and in great shape. Our guides were knowledgeable and got us in and out of our kayak without us getting our feet wet. I didn't give five stars for two reasons. First, the two guides seemed a bit lax, they mostly paddled with us instead of taking lead and sweep positions, despite the fact that two out of the six of us had never kayaked before. They did look back periodically to check on everyone, but it was still strange compared to other kayak tours I've been on. Second, they didn't take pictures of us, other tours I've been on do it as a matter of course and email or post pictures to everyone. Still, this was a very worthwhile experience, and everyone enjoyed the views, the seals we saw in the water, etc., and no one had trouble keeping up despite the wind and the range of both ages and kayaking experience.
