    Gearing up for the adventure!
    Jaide J.

We had a fantastic adventure with Lori, Blake, and the J's (be sure to give them all their end of season reward )! Above & beyond, the team connected on a Reasonable Accommodation I needed to make this trip; responding to my inquiry when I thought I wouldn't be able to go and helping me leverage my strengths in the boat. The Guides and Guests were a pleasure to engage with. We're looking forward to another adventure! Thank you! - Jaide

I came here for white water rafting for the first time which was so much fun! We did the Skykomish River which is a level 4 river. That means that it's a more challenging river but it doesn't mean that the entire river is challenging. It just means that the most difficult portion of it is a class level 4. There were actually many portions of it which were completely chill and some that were only slightly intensive. We could even jump in the water and relax. The most challenging portion was the Boulder Drop which has a lot of rocks and is narrow. We met at the Big Eddy Park which has ample parking. You want to get there a decent amount of time earlier than your scheduled rafting time because you want to give yourself time to change and settle in. You will have to pay $10 for day parking unless you have the Discover Pass. We took a 10 minute bus ride to the river and then they spent 20 minutes teaching us the safety tips and what to do in certain situations. They were very thorough and explained everything very well. They explained what to do in situations like if you fall in and how to get back to the raft. You definitely want to wear clothes that you don't mind getting wet and wear shoes that won't fall off easily. After that we split into smaller groups and started! Our guide Curtis was amazing! He was telling us all his crazy rafting stories and kept the ride entertaining the entire time. He was cracking jokes with all of us and we were definitely having a good time in the raft and he was saying that he was having a good time too because we all had a great sense of humor and were chill. Now let me tell you about our raft's heroic effort. There was another party of two that was in their own raft. One of the women actually fell off the raft right before the Boulder Drop and our raft was right behind theirs. Curtis got in a serious mode/tone and even said, "Oh s**t that's not good" which showed just how serious the situation was. At that point we went all out to save her. Curtis yelled the instructions on what to do and we had to navigate through the Boulder Drop while also putting ourselves in a position to save her. At one point we tried yelling to her to swim to our raft but all she could say was, "Help, help". She then held onto a rock until we could get to her. It was pretty serious and BALLSY (inside joke Curtis I hope you read this) but eventually we pulled her out. We navigated through the Drop as well as we could've and no one fell off either. It was intense and super fun, sadly at her expense but it was an awesome moment of adrenaline! You never hope to be in those types of situations but if you do, you want to be in a raft with a guide who knows what they're doing so they can successfully navigate the rocky (pun intended) situations and get out of them and get everyone to safety. Curtis did exactly that! Overall it took about 2.5 hours to get through the river and get back to the parking lot. The great thing is that they had a photographer taking pictures of all the rafts going through the river, especially during the Boulder Drop. She took some great pictures of us saving the woman (proof that I'm not making it up!). You can purchase the pictures at the end of the raft trip if you want to keep those memories. I had such a great time and I definitely want to go back. Hopefully there will be the same amount of action!

We paddled for 6 days and camped for 5 nights. The scenery and whale watching aspects of the trip were excellent. The camps were comfortable and well supported by occasional re-supply from the base back in Port NcNiell. The camp on Sophia Island was particularly well appointed with already set tents, cots and a nice kitchen and sitting area. The food prepared by our guide was excellent and hearty. I would certainly recommend this group for paddlers of all levels of experience.

We learned a lot from him and enjoyed spending some time getting to know him. Our guide, Korry, was also excellent. He was also friendly and welcoming and made sure we were well fed and had a good time. There is never a guarantee of finding specific wildlife when you are out in the wild, but Larry and Korry knew the animals behaviors and made sure to stay up to date on recent patterns and updates from all the other local teams in order to give us the best chance to see orcas, humpbacks, eagles, seals, and lots of other wildlife while out kayaking. Even if we didn't see any whales the entire time, it still would have been a great trip. However, we did see lots of orca and humpbacks during our time. They even came right by our island one evening, where we could see them from our dinner table and hear them while sleeping in our tents. I highly recommend going with Larry and Discovery Expeditions. We hope to make another trip in the future.

Prices are pretty reasonable and we chose the two hour option due to our limited time during the sunset period. The staff were busy but friendly and assisted us with our kayaks. They will brief you about the kayaks, safety and where to go. Now, I would select a longer time to truly appreciate Deep Cove's natural beauty when you aren't dodging other kayaks or boats. The traffic can be somewhat chaotic in the summer time and it is main area for a lot of boaters heading out of the cove. We kayak around three islands within our two hour option, but didn't relax as much as we want. Again, the salt water, slight wind, and being in the 80's made it a wonderful but brief time.

Great place to kayak, incredible views, definitely worth a visit…read more Equipment and gear were great and in great shape. Our guides were knowledgeable and got us in and out of our kayak without us getting our feet wet. I didn't give five stars for two reasons. First, the two guides seemed a bit lax, they mostly paddled with us instead of taking lead and sweep positions, despite the fact that two out of the six of us had never kayaked before. They did look back periodically to check on everyone, but it was still strange compared to other kayak tours I've been on. Second, they didn't take pictures of us, other tours I've been on do it as a matter of course and email or post pictures to everyone. Still, this was a very worthwhile experience, and everyone enjoyed the views, the seals we saw in the water, etc., and no one had trouble keeping up despite the wind and the range of both ages and kayaking experience.

The time availability, Golden Hour Tour discount, and Anacortes departure allowed us to narrow our decision. We were very pleased with our three our tour. However, it did not seem like it would work well for beginners as basic skills were needed to paddle and navigate. I never quite got comfortable with the peddles for turning and would have had them a little lower as my feet slipped off a couple times. I could not bend my knees enough to reconnect the peddles for turning on my own. Our guide assisted me which held up the tour though. We were in a tandem which worked well for us as my husband was recovering from surgery. We were covered with a skirt to keep us dry for the most part. Some water did leech in to wet our bathing suit bottoms so we were glad we brought a dry change of clothes at the end. We saw eagles, seals, jumping fish, and other birds. Whales do not come in this close to the main land so we had no expectation. The water was like glass in parts, slightly turbulent in others, and the island shores simply serene. If you stuck close to the guide, he was very knowledgeable.

We took the night bioluminescence tour with Anacortes Kayaks. These tours are promoted as "no…read morekayaking experience is necessary." We were a group of 11 women with an average age of 70 and everyone had been in a kayak before, but most of us would be considered novices. There were a total of 26 customers on our tour with only 3 guides. As the staff rushed to get 26 people into kayaks and out on the water, one of our group did not have the spray skirt attached all the way around and once we launched she was quickly soaked. She was also given a paddle with no drip rings, which made it worse. These are equipment issues that the staff should have caught and corrected. The lead guide was giving safety instructions when we were all already out on the water and most of us could not hear him; we had to ask a guide who was nearer "what did he say?" Once we set out, the group quickly split, with the lead setting a pace that many of us found impossible to keep up with. I am not sure why we were rushing to get to a point where we would just float and watch the sunset waiting for it to get dark. We could have taken a slower pace and accomplished the same thing while also keeping the group together. We did not have a problem with the distance, it was the pace that was being set that was an issue. In addition, three of our group were put into a 3-seat kayak and we have since read "using a triple kayak in the sea as a novice requires extreme caution." We had never been in a kayak with that sort of rudder system or in a kayak with 3 seats; paddling and maneuvering it was difficult. The bioluminescence was amazing, but the guides offered very little in terms of a narrative about the area or what we were seeing.....or if they did, we could not hear it. On the way back to the marina in the dark, we all had glow sticks around our necks and were told to follow the lead guide who had a blue one. Fairly quickly, the front group had gotten so far ahead that we could no longer see them at all. We had been told to stay close to shore, but we started hitting rocks and the guide that was behind our group bringing up the rear called out for us to move away from shore. We called back "we have no one to follow!" Imagine paddling in the dark and trying to set your own course. Finally the guide who was still with us moved to the front and paddled slowly so the group could follow her, but I am fairly sure that meant there was no guide behind us to monitor the group from the back. It was hard to tell where the guides were since there was so little communication. What could have been a pleasant paddling experience felt like a struggle and detracted from the whole tour. There should have been at least 4 guides so the group could have been split in two, with a guide in front and in back of each group, or an effort should have been made to keep everyone together. As it was, we did not feel safe, particularly trying to make it back to the marina in the dark. Unfortunately, I would not recommend this tour unless you are a very experienced kayaker. EDIT: We were part of a GROUP of slower kayaks. We were not a lone kayak unable to keep up "with the rest of the group" as the company response implies. We were not the last to arrive back at the marina nor were we the last kayak for most of the evening. WE were not "the main problem."

We pushed off from shore peddling backward until we reached a good spot to turn ourselves around and move forward with our adventure. Much to our disappointment the boat would only turn to the left no matter which direction you try to steer it in while peddling forward. So at this point we are just doing circles in place lol. We then reversed ourselves back to shore and decided to try the second peddle boat that was brought out by mistake. The second boat was even worse lol. The second boat had the same issue of only circling left when peddling forward, only this boat had a broken seat back which also made peddling a struggle. We went back to the rental shack to return our life jackets, the person working was super nice and offered us another boat, but we declined because at that point we were over it.
