If you're younger and want to play a volleyball game on the weekends, just say hi to one of the younger guys and we will make sure we can all mingle and have some fun! If you are just going to Black's beach to see certain types of naked bodies, stay home and spare us your attitude. If you are going the beach to enjoy a beautiful beach, the warm sand and water, meet interesting people, and go NAKED doing it, you should have a pretty good time. Two of the most interesting people I meet there were two people that had to be in their 80's. They were both really skinny and had great tans. They were both wearing hats with day glo bands that matched their day glo sandals and day glo rimmed sunglasses. They were in from traveling the world. They were always surrounded by a group of people of all ages every time you saw them down there- just delightful people. I thought it was amusing the day their children. grand children and great grandchildren came with them. Everyone got naked except for the one's in their 20's and early thirties-the prudes. A happy family none the less. If your a single female and don't want to be bothered by anyone who might prove to be obnoxious, happens anywhere-two ways to handle it. Put your towel down by a group of people on the South end. If someone bugs you, ask the people around you to help run them off-it works. A second option is to go to the North end and put your towel down in the gay area. They'll treat you with some respect and can run perverts off equally as fast. I first visited Black's Beach back in the early 1990s. I was in an Internet chat room and asked what were the fun places to visit in SD, and the person I was chatting with said Black's Beach. This was the time when I was acclimating to the out of the closet lifestyle. I was still in my early 20's and was titillated by the idea of seeing a nude beach, so I made the trek. The journey to the beach wore me out, and there were some lifeguards that were patrolling the area. They asked me if I was okay and I just told them I was a little fatigued. But I certainly perked up when I saw the first naked person and he was in shape too. So the walk was worth it. Now that I've seen my fair share of naked guys, there's no need for Black's Beach unless you just want to enjoy a secluded beach and really do enjoy sunbathing in the nude. While its definitely not wheelchair accessible, the steep incline only allows people in decent shape to traverse the path. Consequently and fortunately, the result is you see naked people that are in decent shape. If you're a straight guy, you'll probably be disappointed since most of the nude people are gay men showing off their bodies. There is some heavy cruising at the top cliffs which kind of mars the scenery. I wish those guys would just get a hotel room. Parking is easy, but its on a dirt lot. On a rainy day or after a rainy day, there's a good chance your car's tires will get stuck. Be very careful as you walk down the steep hill or you'll be experiencing the nursery rhyme of Jack and Jill. There are people that have died falling off those cliffs. The south side of the beach is where the the straight people tend to congregate and the north side is where the gay people tend to hang out. read more

BEST BEACH IN SAN DIEGO!!!!! I love coming here because you can lay on the sand for hours with just the sound of the waves. No loud music, no big crowds, no kids running around and it's easy to find a spot where you can be away from everyone. Yes, the trek down the cliffs can be a real bitch for a lot of people. But there are spots where you can stop and rest while taking in the breathtaking views. There's a few paths you can take and the most popular and easiest is the one by the Torrey Pines Glider Port. Parking is usually no problem if you're willing to walk because the closer spots do get filled quickly. Another reason I love coming here is I hate tan lines! Yes, it's a nude beach. No, you don't have to get naked. But it's fun to just lay down on the sand or even get in the water. For those of who are conscious about getting naked, no need to worry. Just take it off and after a few minutes, you will complelety forget that you're naked. Because of the hike, be sure to plan out what you're going to bring. No big coolers or BBQ grills obviously. But beach chairs and umbrellas are easy to bring down and having an umbrella definitely lets you stay for hours since you'll be protected from the sun. read more

During my girlfriend's finals week, I decided to come to San Diego to visit which was a good choice on my part but a big distraction to her. Wow is the word I would describe this place because it is just that beautiful. When you first see it, it seems as though it is a painting but when you examine it, this is how nature looks like. The parking space is big so you wouldn't have a problem at all. However, it can be muddy so be prepared to not wear your new shoes! Don't be wearing short sleeves or shorts during the winter because it can be cold!! This is a must for those who are in the La Jolla area because it is so calming and relaxing!! This review is long overdue, as I have been going to Black's every summer since 1991. I have been to Black's over 100 times. Some of my best summer memories are from here. It's hands down the most beautiful and relaxing beach in Southern California. In fact, it is nicer than any beach on Maui (and I have seen most of them), better than the French Riviera, and Monte Carlo, Hampton Beaches, Catalina Beaches and any Florida Beach including Key West. I have not seen every beach in the world, but I challenge it to compare to Black's. One day at Black's feels like 3 days away on vacation. All your stresses immediately release when you first put your foot in the sand and look up at the cliffs behind you--breathtaking beauty. It's a remote beach you have to hike to and put some effort into getting to--like being on an Island. There are no pesky children, no loud radios, no ghetto people, no concessions, no restrooms, lots of space, cleaner, and free. It is set in a highly affluent area of San Diego County adjacent to Torrey Pines and La Jolla. It's one of the most expensive pieces of Real Estate in the world. It's a mature adults environment. We always start our day with a stop at the La Jolla Whole Foods which is close to the parking lot for Black's. We load up on water, sandwiches, fruit, etc. for the day, and take our last restroom pit stop. There is a Ralph's across from WF if you like that better. From there we drive over to the road that leads to the Torrey Pines Glider Point and park on the street for the day. You can also park in the parking lot at the end of the road, but it is an uneven dirt lot. You will want to have a Backpack (very important) so that you can have your hands free for the hike down if possible. We place as much as we can in our backpacks. I carry my beach umbrella in one hand, and my boogie board under the other arm. I use hiking sandals, but a hiking shoe or any shoe with some good tread is ok. There is only one main trail down to the beach from there, so you cannot get lost. It takes approximately 20 minutes to hike down. When you get to the bottom facing the ocean, if you turn to your left--it's a clothing Required beach section (must have swim suit), and if you turn to your right, it's nudity is permitted (not required.) It's all a public beach--you do not have to be nude anywhere here! We always go to the nude section, and find a space that looks cool to settle in for the next 6 hours of fun and relaxation. Every time I come to Black's it seems to have a different personality and a slightly different experience--all good. Many days I spend 1/2 the day in the water on my board--it is the best of the best for safe boogie boarding and surfers love it too. Long white sandy beaches, warmer water than Los Angeles beaches, and lots of space to spread out. If you have never swum in the ocean nude--you owe it to yourself to do it at least once in your lifetime. The rush of the current water over your body and between your legs feels so good without a swimsuit to impede the senses. You feel so free, and wonder why you have not tried this long ago. It's an experience that compares to no other. The summer Black's beach today is a thriving beach community made up of primarily male and male/female couples, friends, and groups in their 20's to 40's but all ages are represented. Europeans love it, because they can be free just like at home. There is a large gay male constituency at Black's, but most seem to gather together on the far North part of the beach if you walk down that far. No sex or lewd behavior is permitted on the beach and the police and lifeguards patrol up and down and will cite for that--don't do it. It's also poor etiquette to take photos or use a cell phone and you may get harassed for that too or escorted off the beach. It's much safer on this beach than any others because perpetrator escape route is limited and difficult and anyone walking around with clothing on is immediately suspicious and everyone looks at them--it would be hard to stash stolen goods on a nude body. Still keep an eye on your stuff when in the water or ask a neighbor. There is no formal restroom, so some walk back to the cliff's and hide behind a large boulder. You can have your partner patrol near you so you have privacy if needed. And then there is the Ocean. The fish are not happy about it--dolphins consider it trespassing, but they deal with it. At the end of the day, getting dressed and sand out of your pants is easy since it's a nude beach. Depending on your abilities, it can take between 25-45 minutes to hike back up with your stuff. I love this beach! I noticed someone posted photos of their dog on Blacks Beach, be forewarned that if you being a dog to this beach you will be kicked off the beach by the security/lifeguards/rangers. Do not think you can bring dogs here, or you'll make the same mistake I did and hike all the way down with your dog and then be told "no dogs allowed- you have to leave" and then have to hike all the way back up! Save yourself the trouble and just don't bring your dog to this beach... The beach itself is beautiful and secluded and the hikes are wonderful! I love the hike from the Gliderport location. It's a nude beach, so it has a section for clothing optional. There are always a lot of naked people so feel free to join them! Atmosphere here is wonderful! Romantic and easygoing. read more

I would give this beach 5 stars for sure if there weren't so many weird nudes that go there. This beach is probably the best beach in all of San Diego. It's secluded, it's clean, there's tons of beach space, great waves and beautiful views. This is our go-to spot when La Jolla Shores is too busy. Now I'm going to tell you some of the stories about the nudes that we've encountered: Story1: My friend was feeling courageous and went to Black's all by herself to go skinny dipping for the first time. She put her clothes down on the sand, ran into the water, swam around for a while, and then came back to get dressed again...... As she was walking back to her clothes, she noticed a nude man sitting right next to her stuff. He wasn't just sitting there though, he was pleasuring himself!!! yuck! She grabbed her stuff and got the heck outta there. Story2: My husband and I were at Black's just hanging out and we see the lifeguard approaching a couple about 25 feet from us. The lifeguard was yelling at them "And you thought you were going to get away with this on a public beach???" Well, the guy was nude and the girl topless.....he was STANDING, and she was NEALING in front of him and she had started to orally please him in front of everyone. Gross. Story3: I was there with my husband and his brother. They were playing frisbee and I was left alone to sunbathe on my towel. I was approached by a nude who repeatedly asked if I wanted to take a dip. Yuck. I finally said "No, my husband, whose right there will be back soon" and he finally went away. So ya, there are a lot of gross nudes that are NOT afraid to talk to you and in fact LOVE talking to clothed people. But still, I give Black's 4 stars because it's a kick *ss beach!! If you like seeing naked people and traversing a cliff to get to this nude beach, this is the place for you. The beach is pretty nice and secluded by the huge cliff. No wonder this place is designated as a nude beach. I would say that approximately half the people were fully naked, but most people were at least showing some skin as being fully clothed on a beach would be considered awkward. Parking is free. However, the only caveat for seeing the nude people down the cliff is that you have to descend the cliff to get to the beach and ascend it back to the parking lot. At least you get a good workout and perhaps a nice "view" if you are fortunate. read more

I really enjoy this stretch of beach; I was a regular here when I lived in San Diego. There's virtually unlimited free parking, though it's super-dusty so let's face it, if you just got your car washed today, you don't want to be the one who drives. There are two ways down to the beach, one has a stairway and is manageable, the other is a cliff and pretty hardcore. You'll want to be in good shape and wearing good footwear. Yes, it's clothing optional. Get over it. Nobody's going to make you do it. There's definitely a gay side (north) and a straight side (south), though again, nobody's gonna kick you out for being on the "wrong" side. People are generally friendly, people usually keep to themselves. On weekdays, it's pretty empty. On weekends, depends on the season, it can be really busy and fun. People drink and 'smoke' here, but I don't and wouldn't recommend it. Seriously, that cliff is no joke and death isn't impossible. Because of the cliff, you don't see a whole lot of senior citizens, out-of-shape people, or small children... so demographically it's pretty 20-60 and primarily male. read more

If you are taking the stairs down/up and a slow family is ahead of you, you can take Goat's Head trail! It's just slightly to the north of the the stairs and is safe to traverse, even with a surfboard and flip flops on, but it's definitely steeper than the stairs. When you are down at the beach and trying to enjoy your naked time, try to go over by the volleyball courts where the "Black's Beach Bares" are always hanging out. These are the regulars that are not creepers and will welcome you into the fold (if you aren't a creeper). Also, if you like pole dancing naked on the beach....there is a 50mm 12 ft. stainless steel pole permanently mounted just south of the volleyball courts. I grew up in the Northeast and this is my first time to California. I was told by a friend to check out Black's Beach. I enjoy being nude but have never experienced being nude in the immediate presence of others or out in nature. The beach was clean, no trash but no trash cans either. There was sea weed but that is all natural. On the downside there are no bathrooms on the beach. One of the locals I asked said to go in the water but I was trying to avoid getting totally wet since I didn't bring a towel. There are portable potties in the parking lot but that's a hike. The view is amazing from the top of the cliff and the parasailing and Hang gliders contribute to the overall beauty. The people were pretty friendly, however there are some people who stare. This is to be expected if you are and attractive person whether your naked or not. I just take it as a compliment and for the most part ignore them and keep moving. Early in in the day there were fewer people and it was cooler, as we got into the early afternoon the cloud cover cleared off and it heated up. After a stroll down the beach I returned to 4 times the people but on the plus side their were more people my age. Overall this was an amazing experience. If you are comfortable in your skin, take good care of yourself and stay in shape this is a great place to boost your confidence, show off what you work so hard for and be one with nature. read more

One of my fav. "thinking spots" in SD. The view from the top is so nice (panoramic view of the ocean). On most days you see hang gliders (?) and makes the view a little more entertaining & colorful. The hike is a bit scary to me since I'm scared of heights, but the view is so worth it. Be careful because there are some slick spots. The hike up is a bit tougher. Be careful if you're female though---the males there LOVE to get your attention. You'll know what I mean. They get annoying sometimes but you just have to ignore them and enjoy the secluded beach (and since they claim it's "their" beach..but whatever) . :-) read more

Love it, love it, love it. Do not take your kids if you are offended by nudity or don't want to have to explain. Plenty of families go there to practice nudism and enjoy the sun as nature intended. The trek down is challenging if you're afraid of heights and a beast on the way back up so if you're afraid of a little exercise it's not for you. My wife and I enjoyed it to the fullest. There are some "looky loos" but most of them are also naked. It's also a perfect beach for running on and you'll see plenty of fully clothed runners. Everyone is friendly and respectful. No lewd sexual behavior. You can enjoy the beach and watching people para-glide along the cliff. The only complaint is that it was cloudy most of the day so we didn't head down till after 4pm so we didn't have a lot of time to spend. The other great thing I noticed was that the beach is patrolled often so security and safety seems to be of absolute importance. You haven't lived until you've soaked in some sun and waves the way nature intended. We'll definitely be going back. read more

Yea there's people that are nude. If your uncomfortable with that then don't visit I suppose. When I was there it didn't seem like anyone was being creepy. The further down you walk along the coast the more lgbt it gets. I had fun as I went by myself and read a bit of my book. There is a walk down some stairs that I wouldn't say is beginner level, but is manageable with a few breaks. The view of the ocean at the top of the cliff is amazing. If you like hiking this is the place because it's a fun hike down to the beach. I recommend taking a bottle of water to hydrated because the walk down and up can make you a little tired and parched. It's clothing optional. Just weird when the people who are clothed just come there to watch everyone nude. Very weird and annoying. My other complaint is that the darn university students always park there taking up spots for people who wants to go Gliding or down to the beach and it sometimes leave you to be unable to find a spot during the weekday. Parking is a major issue because of the students not using the parking they have designated for campus. I just wish they could some how regulate the parking here. If there was one reason why I loved being a UCSD student, it's the beach. I feel extremely lucky to be able to run and exercise in this atmosphere. The view you get once you're actually on shore is therapeutic, relaxing, romantic... It's just great! I run along this beach from the south entrance (the asphalt hill) until I get to the Torrey Pines area closer to the glider port, then back to school, and my runs are about 4-8 miles which means there is A LOT of this beach to explore. Heading more north, the beach does get quieter and emptier, especially when you're distancing yourself from any entrances and exits. This is good for if you wanted to take scenic pictures with no one in the background! (See my photos). The north side of the beach is nude-friendly, but for some reason I haven't seen any signs saying so! It's just been that way. Also, the nude beach-goers that I've seen all happen to be men. I haven't had any creepy experiences as a female who frequents the beach by myself (I am always clothed), and the nudists mind their own business and don't seem to approach anyone which I am okay with! Nudity and sexuality are two different topics and this beach being a nude beach is not a problem at all. Extra: one day I was lucky enough to run along the shore of washed up bright blue jellies- I believe they're called "by the wind sailors." And it was a BEAUTIFUL sight. But poor jellies! This is mainly a review for the trail/stairs to and from Black's Beach. We have parked at the Gliderport parking lot and walked/hiked down to the beach, then walked along the shore, then back up the stairs to the Gliderport. The trail is fairly steep, so you be careful walking down the beach. The stairs are uneven and has a dirt trail in many parts. The stairs are also uneven in height, so you must watch where you are walking. Once you hit the bottom of the stairs, the beach is a very beautiful, sandy beach. You can see La Jolla to your left and Torrey Pines State Beach to your right. This past weekend we saw dolphins swimming (slowly) about 100 feet from the beach. The last time we went, we saw fish swimming about 20 feet from the beach. At Black's Beach, you will see nude sunbathers, so just be aware. Xie Xie!! read more

This place is filled with empty spaces for privacy and there are a few naked ladies as well. It's a little hike up, bring jacket and water for evenings, watching the sunset, the temp can drop 20 degrees in minutes. Always entertaining, so don't be a pu$$( and go skinny dipping or sit on the beach and enjoy the area like nature intended. No frills, no amenities and no lifeguard after 5pm. Be prepared, flashlights and jackets are crucial 9 months of the year after sunset, It gets cold fast . Hiking the cliff in the dark can challenge anyone. 300' elevation, the hike is almost straight up on the north trail, and will get your cardio going. Headlamps are preferred so hands are free for climbing or in case you slip. Remember, unless your familiar with the area, it can be difficult Locating the trail. After several miles, it all Lola the same, flashlights will help, but familiarize where the trial hits the beach The hike going down is slippery, barefoot is the only way to go, tennis shoes will not grip well although hiking boots are ok, if you want to carry boots with you while walking I the sand barefooted. Iphone reception on the beach is ok, some parts are dead zones. iPhone reception is non existent on parts of the lower trail, so be advised, If you get into trouble, you may be unable to call for help. Many people have fallen and lifeguards are trained in cliff rescue but don't be that person. Stick to the trail and take your trash with you and lock your zippers on backpacks, they can and do open up leaving a trail of items in the sand. You won't hear them fall, so you won't notice them falling out. Attach your car keys to your backpack to avoid losing keys, it happens all the time. Little tips to avoid common problems. read more

Great beach, don't drive their at night no one will be there

Love this place! One should be careful on the way down from the Gliderport, and on the way up it is better to go a bit slower: the tricky stairs are steep. The beach is beautiful, and perfect for long walks in the water from Torrey Pines Beach. (Somebody asked me about the walk:) It is easy by low tide if you don't mind to walk in the water, at other times and in normal shoes it could be a bit troublesome to cross two places with rocks that reaching into the ocean: on the first one - direction from Torrey Pines towards Black's - there is a narrow path above (pic: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/blacks-beach-la-jolla#svfo_gniu3XYJSCdqLj_-w), on the second one one must jump sometimes on the rocks, and they may be unstable. It could take over an hour one way easily, depends on the preferred speed and activities (I stop and wander around to take photographs, and the whole thing can take over two hours). I was told that parking in La Jolla Farms is difficult or prohibited, but I did not check on it myself yet. The entry on the way up is not obvious from the BB, it is further South from glider-port, you'll see it going up from the North and curve left towards a small parking lot. I've been to Blacks a handful of times because I live on campus at UCSD in the housing that is closest to this beach. What a privilege it is to be able to walk 10 mins and get here! It's beautiful, clean, and laid back. I have yet to come here nude because I am afraid of the immature college kids.. I mean really, I read a review that said something along the lines of "don't except to see boobs, it's all older men" come. on... That makes me so uncomfortable but I know there's nothing to be done about that. I also read some reviews that were responding basically saying "don't come down here to gawk" so thank you to those people. To move on from that rant, the beach itself is a must visit! But be prepared for a 7-15 minute trek down depending on how fast or slow you are. read more

This beach is beautiful. Forget about the naked people. Yeah it may seem weird, but who cares? The scenery is gorgeous. The view from the top before you descend the cliff is wonderful. The hike up and down the cliffs gives you a little bit of a work out. There is ALWAYS ample parking because other people are squeamish of naked people. For me, there is nothing worse than getting excited to go to the beach then having to circle around for 40 minutes looking for parking, so I am particularly partial to Blacks for this reason. The description says it is not "good for kids" but I have seen families here, fully clothed with their kids. No big deal. read more

My friend and I were exploring in San Diego and wanted to check out their beaches, we were aware that San Diego had a clothing optional beach so we set forth on our hike at the Ho Chi Minh trail to get down to the beach. As we were walking alongside the beach we finally found Black's beach which is a clothing optional beach so expect nudity. But let me just say the experience was interesting and overall I've never felt so free in my life. I'd recommend this beach to anyone who is a free spirit, or who wants a full body tan in peace. read more

The trek down is steep so be careful. One way is a public beach, in the opposite direction is a nude beach. It's a great beach!

A former nudist beach where people continue to enjoy that freedom of walking around without clothes. It is a great beach! I took the dangerous trail from the Glider Point. It's dangerous if you are not cool with falling down or don't have a great sense of balance. Once down at the bottom, you may walk north to Torrey Pines... and continue walking if the tide permits. You may also walk south for some distance; but I did not try that one. Good place to take photos of birds. read more

This beach is somewhat unique compared to other beaches in California - and not because it's a nude beach. There is a hangliding liftoff pad on the cliff over hanging the beach so you'll see hangliders flying above you. On the south end are the surfers and there are many surfers, on the north end is the clothing optional area with volleyball nets. So, if you're not a surfer, you're better off taking off your clothes. I did. It's not such a big deal anymore. I used to get embarrassed and cry like a little baby. Not so anymore. I now have a tan with no tan lines. i'm so happy and proud. As for the approximately 50 people i saw on the north end, nearly everyone was nude. 10 were females and several were attractive. This was on a weekday in midday hours. The water here is a bit warmer than the cold waters in northern california.
