The pub has decent traditional ales, and the wine list is good. It has about a dozen each of whites and reds, a couple of rose wines from around £12 to £37. There are about eight champagnes from around £18 to £100. Most people don't come here to drink, they come to eat, and the menu is varied with more fish dishes available on Friday. Starters range from around £5 to £7, mains £12 to £17, deserts about £5 to £7. We had homemade fish cakes with Salad and Homemade Tartare Sauce for £6.90 which were excellent and Gravadlax with Smoked Salmon Pate, Toast & Cress Salad which was the same price and tasty, but a little too oily for my taste, it would have benefitted from a good-sized wedge of lemon. We followed this by Roast Aylesbury Duck Breast, Confit Leg with Gratin Potato, Plum & Ginger Compote for £14.95 and Roast Local Rare Breed Lamb with Crushed Jerseys Royals, Marsh Samphire & Tomato: both were excellent and very tasty. We were flagging a little now, so we shared a portion of cheese and biscuits at £6.50: it was nice, but I've had better. Overall the wine and food are excellent and the staff and service are both very good. I've eaten at Michelin star restaurants that haven't had steak as tender and succulent as what we had here. The ambiance was romantic, quirky, and quiet, perfect for a night out. We started with a potato and leek soup and the Welsh rarebit. The soup was good, not exceptional, but good, and the rarebit was tasty. We continued with the special, which was a hanging skewer with melted garlic butter, corn on the cob, and chips. I can honestly say that I have never had such a delicious, perfectly cooked and seasoned beef skewer outside of Greece or Spain. It was an absolute experience simply eating it. One of those rare dishes that makes you pause and close your eyes at the sheer pleasure of the perfect taste. I never wanted it to end. My husband had the same experience with his assorted beef platter. The medallions were so tender you understand what the phrase "melt in your mouth" means. I only wish we had room for dessert, as the dessert menu looked utterly luscious. But we will be back, and soon. I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough.

The menu isn't extensive, but included a reasonable selection of pub-style food. We tried the home-made burger in a bun which was excellent and an up-market fish fingers sandwich which was OK. Both came with home-made chips which were nice. Unusually for a lunch time we decided to try the suites because they looked rather nice: we shared a sticky-toffee pudding with custard, which was very good. They have a normal selection of draft beers and spirits, and a small private car park. Definitely worth a look, we'll be back.

The place is small and cozy with all sorts of little nooks and crannies but it has been sympathetically modernised, has a small selection of Tap drinks, and has regularly changing guest ale. The proprietors are very accommodating and take great care in delivering a suitable meal when I visited with a guest who is a celiac.

The food is quite good, but seems a little overpriced for the quality of food on offer, although the portion sizes are quite good. There was a group of us and we tried a selection of starters, all were around £4.50 each: Black Pudding stack with pancetta was nice, but there was an over abundance of onion relish; mushrooms with port and cream, quite tasty but served with half a bought-in Ciabatta bread which seemed an odd match; a huge portion of fairly ordinary pate served with a large pile of white toasty loaf. Mains ranged from around £8-15 each. Coq au vin was quite nice and good value at £8.25, but seemed to have been over cooked and perhaps bought-in; chicken with Brie and Pancetta for £11.95 was perhaps the best of the bunch, but was served with a few over cooked and very oily new potatoes; the £15 rib eye steaks did not appear to be rib eye and was ordered medium rare and arrived medium to well. On the up side the food wasn't bad, just below expectations. The service was rather slow all round, but the staff were friendly and helpful. The place gets busy so you should book in advance: so on this basis I'd try the place again, but I'd probably try the simpler dishes and see how they turn out. We called in at the request of the owner to update my review as the property changed hands some time ago. I'm pleased to be able to see that everything appeared in good order, including the once tired car park. The bar area is tiny, only one table and a couple of chairs, so this is now very much a foodie pub rather than a local's drinking establishment. The restaurant area isn't huge, probably around 45 covers, and on the evening we called was very busy so reservations are recommended. There is a lunch time and evening menu, but there is a huge overlap between them. We called in the evening where there was a standard menu and a small specials menu with one starter, two mains and one pudding on it. One of the standard fishcake starters had been changed to a different mix of fish, and one of the standard mains changed during the evening from chicken to guinea fowl, so there does seem to be some additional variation on the menu. I had the crab and prawn fishcake starter, which was tasty and served with a small dressed salad. I followed this with chicken wrapped in bacon Grilled chicken supreme wrapped in smoked bacon and stuffed with pork, leek and herbs served with a sweet creamy Madeira sauce: this came with a choice of potatoes (I went with Gratin) and a mixture of vegetables (green beans, carrots and broccoli). My partner had a fillet steak but asked to change the Rossini-style presentation with pate for a green peppercorn sauce which they happily agreed to. The steak came with green beans wrapped in bacon, sautéed mushrooms and hand cut chips. In general all the food was really pretty good. The steak was a little over-salted and the green beans were burnt at the ends (doesn't show up too clearly in the available light picture) which is disappointing. We finished off with Bailey's Belgian chocolate crème brûlée and a sticky toffee pudding with salted caramel sauce and honeycomb ice cream. Both were very good, although the crème brûlée didn't taste that much of Baileys. Overall it was much better than my previous visit. The food was good, but could be better. Similarly the service was slightly lacking: nobody ever asked us if the food was OK whilst we were eating it, and sometimes getting someone to provide something took a couple of attempts on occasions. Overall worth a look if you want some home cooked good pub grub.

The pub decor could be described as cozy and quaint. It has low ceilings and the historic accents and a thatched roof. There is a nice little fireplace inside but it isn't live. We found the food to be excellent and the service was equally as great. We live close by so we will definitely be coming back again!
