The menu was not extensive however it was all fairly sophisticated stuff which would have to be freshly prepared. We had the baked camembert to start with and it was superb. Main courses were generous and very capably prepared. The service was spot on and the beers were excellent. For a Monday lunchtime they were busy with diners and they deserve to be as they have clearly put in a great deal of effort.

I also find it to be overpriced for what it is. The bar area is really comfortable and nicely decorated. The drinks selection is good, and even though it is cheap compared to London it is pricey for the area. My main issue is that I find The Akeman to be quite stuffy and pretentious. They have quite a strict dress code policy at weekends, and we have been turned away a couple of times because someone in our group was wearing trainers or flip flops. On a Friday & Saturday night you would think you were in a bar in the middle of the City with the amount people dress up. I find it all a bit too much for little old Tring.

Although it was quiet (probably being a weekday lunchtime) my friend and I were greeted promptly and in a friendly manner and taken to a table meant for four, which actually made a nice change to being crammed onto a table for two as it meant we had some elbow room. Our drinks arrived a couple of minutes later where she asked if we were ready to order, we asked for more time, which she did. When we were ready, she was engaging and upbeat and took our orders and highly recommend the sweet potato chips. When our food arrived, it was well presented and was surprisingly more chips than I was expecting (cannot complain about that) with my veggie burger. It wasn't a 'traditional' veggie burger (more layered ingredients in a bun) but it was probably the best burger I have had at any restaurant. My friend had the pork belly and she enjoyed it greatly. The waitress was prompt with any needs but did not hover over us which was good as we didn't feel rushed. Once we had finished, we declined a pudding as we were full from the main course, a good sign of good sized portions. I would highly recommend this restaurant for those having a day out at the museum. Going from previous reviews, they really have improved themselves and hope to have the opportunity to visit again soon.

Unfortunately this prime location and cheap drinks means that some of the more unsavory characters about town can be found in here most nights of the week. Fights have been known to spill out on to the high street however this has to be said is a rare occurrence. The interior of the pub leaves much to be desired however it is one of few pubs in Tring to have two pool tables, also due to it being one of the largest pubs in the area.

The bar staff are particularly unfriendly and reluctant to serve anyone who is not a regular. This pub is so unfriendly that people on pub crawls of the whole of Tring will still not go in! I would avoid this pub at all costs, there are so many better alternatives in Tring. The beer in Black Horse is not even cheap, the pipes are clearly not cleaned and the pub itself is pretty filthy inside. Avoid, at all costs!

We were greeted on arrival but told to sit where liked, meaning no waiting staff took any notice of us. 15 minutes later, no drinks order or food order had been taken and we were ignored. That was the theme of the evening; we had to get up and go to the bar five times during the course of the meal. The food was at best mediocre; Mr Knight's starter was awful. Dishes seemed to have been sitting under hot lamps for ages before coming out. The staff do not know what they're doing. Basic procedures are not in place and they can't even operate the bar effectively. We weren't charged for drinks but the bill was still expensive given the poor quality of the food. I will be writing to them to complain- a rarity for me!
