On a beautiful fall Sunday; decided to take a ride to check this place out, and enjoy the scenic foliage along the way. Sarah, was friendly, knowledgeable on the process of cider and great with recommendations. The original location has been open for 10 years, with the second location ( The Buffalo Cider Hall) within the last three years. If your into hard cider and looking to try different kinds; recommend the flight of 4. I tried a small size of Lakeside Loganberry,Ghost Lantern, and Redbarn Sweet cider. The original location has 40 acre orchard, tasting room, production and outside sitting area. Their wide variety of flavors are sure to please all. The cider can be found at Wegmans, Consumer Sqaure, their locations to name a few, and they do ship as well. Well worth checking out, for all the cider lovers. read more

Stopped by yesterday after a few years since our last visit, and we enjoyed a sweet cider tasting with chips and crackers outside on a picnic table. The sweet cider tasting ($10 for 4, 4-5oz pours) was really good! They also offered a dry tasting for this price, as well as by the glass options and growler fills. We also got a package of cheese and crackers, as well as a bag of spicy New York chips which went very well with our tasting too. Layout: there were 3 picnic tables outside for people to sit at, and a shop with a huge variety of their cider in cans and bottles, as well as local beers. They also have cider on tap for by the glass and growler fills. If you come for a tasting when it's busier, I recommend bringing a picnic blanket so you can spread out, as there's not that much seating. read more

A group of us did the wine trail tour yesterday, and despite this being a cider guy, it was our first bus stop and i was glad for it. I'm not really big on wines, but i love a good cider. The cider tasting costs $5 for four samples, very reasonable. The ciders on the menu are ranked for driest at the top to sweetest on the bottom. They also had a seasonal "Christmas" cider in the mix, landing on the sweet side. I prefer sweeter, so i chose to sample: -New England Style -Premium Draft -Christmas -Red Barn I didn't really care too much for the New England Style, maybe it was the medium dry taste or the high alcohol content, I'm not sure. but Premium Draft was like a classic apple cider, Christmas had a holiday spice not to it and Red Barn was deliciously sweet smooth- all three were amazing. I wanted to buy all the ciders to take home, but they did not offer bottles in all three varieties. The Premium Draft came in cans and The Christmas would have to be in a growler. So i bought a a bottle of Red Barn. I really enjoyed the decor in here, it's a Barn turned cidery and was very cute and welcoming. They also sold merch and you could even look into the back area through windows and see some of the equipment. I'm a big fan of the process! Cute smaller place. Nice outdoor seating in the back by the apple trees. I had a flight and loved the Chandler Street cherry cider! Light and refreshing. Only wish they had more cold selections available, they carry craft beer but you would have to drink it warm if you don't like cider. read more

The Niagara Wine Trail is my favorite wine trail. This cidery is on that trail! I have been here a few times to sample some cider. My favorite to date is the Premium Draft. It is a classic cider so it is crisp and sweet. The tasting room is small but very nice when the weather is nice. There is a roll up door with a screen so there is a beautiful breeze. Staff are always nice and attentative. If you don't want to purchase right there and then, Blackbird is sold at the grocery store! read more

I love their cider. Had never been straight to the source before, and was excited to check it out firsthand. Had a taste of the ciders on tap, and decided on the Estate Blend to fill my growler. I also grabbed the semi-sweet organic in a bottle. The staff were absolutely lovely. Very friendly and attentive. However, when I paid, they insisted that I had to carry my purchases out in their plastic bags (which kills me because I take moral issue plastic bags). I said, "Oh please, may I skip the bags? I'm a crazy environmentalist." The bartender looked very apologetic, but she said it was mandated by the owner. I said, "Please, I must insist--I don't use plastic bags--I'm walking right out--I'll use my own bag!" To no avail. Hence, the 3 stars. I will not go back. I will buy my BlackBird from dealers, but I won't go to a place that insists I use their plastic bags when I so viscerally can't stand them. To the owner of BlackBird: your cider's awesome. Yes, I know I'm not the biggest fan of apple cider to begin with, but I was pleasantly surprised by the ciders at Leonard Oakes, and that made me feel more optimistic about trying out BlackBird Cider Works last week. The venue itself is great. The grounds are beautiful with a view of the lake. The building is cool. Service is friendly. The ciders are okay-ish. I tried the Brut first because it was supposedly made in the champagne style. I figured worst case scenario it would taste like sparkling cider. Nope. No sparkle whatsoever. It just tasted like apple flavored water. Next I tried the semi dry New England style because it incorporated local honey and sounded promising. The smell was really unpleasant. The taste actually wasn't too bad. It kind of reminded me of mead...but I'd rather have mead. I also tried the two drafts. The estate was okay. The premium draft was not. Again, take my review with a grain of salt. It's worth a visit. read more

BlackBird Cider has basically ruined me for all other ciders, especially the run-of-the-mill stuff you can buy in the beer cooler at the grocery store. Love. It's on tap at Rohrbachs Beer Hall, and I often have a hard time ordering Rohrbachs' (very good) beer because I know I can have cider. My husband and I stopped at the cidery one afternoon when we were in tiny Barker already, and we had fun trying all of the ciders we don't usually have access to. I love cider, and it was cool to see it right at its source. Staff was super friendly, and the owner stopped by to tell us about the business and apples. Nice to have a cidery on the trail! And even better, a cidery that makes organic batches! They had at least three organic ciders offered. While there for a tasting, the owner was just completing a batch of habenero cider which will be a limited offering. I cannot wait until it is done - I will definitely be making a trip out to try it! We came with a group of 21 people. They accomodated us, but it was a tight fit. We had five people at the bar for a tasting at a time. They were very friendly and helped us partake in the scavenger hunt by scattering photos throughout their tasting room for us to find. If you like cider, go to this place. If you don't like cider, go to this place and you will find one you like - 13 different types. Nice country drive to get there and the location is right near Lake Ontario and is part of the Niagara Wine Trail. Service was friendly and the ciders were interesting - who knew there were so many varieties I.E. One cider had 27 different types of apples in it. You can buy growlers, cans and nice bottles that mimic wine bottles. They also had a cider on display that they helped Wegmans make which I thought was cool. The highlight was the Premium Draft cider - it's what you want cider to taste like and it's not as clear as your typical cider. Great Apple taste, goes down smooth and refreshing aftertaste. I took away a star for the prices. They're charging retail there for some reason. A lot of the bottles go for $14.95 and they should hover around $10 if you're buying directly from them. When I went to Tops in Lewiston and saw the premium cider in cans that I paid $7.99 for at Blackbird priced at $6.99 - I was a little pissed. read more

My husband and I wanted to take in the bit of Fall we have left, so we took a road trip! Being from the North Towns it was only an hour, but we took a beautiful ride to Barker to visit BlackBird Cider! It's is amazing here! The cider prices are very reasonable and samples galore! There is even a BBQ food truck on site today! Had a flight, but ended up with THE BEST CIDER.... Ghost Lantern! It's amazing!! We heard of it but...... WOW! Today is a day to get stuff around Buffalo a visit. Their ciders are to die for. I enjoyed pints of Estate Reserve cider. It's like drinking a crispy and delicious white wine. If you like cider then this is a great place to come. It is really small so if you have a large group it can get very tight. They have many different ciders to try and the price isn't bad. Our wine tour called ahead because apparently you need reservations. Regardless, we were accosted in the driveway and admonished to "use our indoor voices" before we entered the building. Long overdue review! This place was such a fun stop on our Wine tour around. We were spending a couple days in the area checking out all the different places on our way back from Niagara Falls and this was by far our favorite! I wish I could remember his name (he's in one of the pictures) but he was so cool and very friendly. My boyfriend is in my the beer industry and they had lots to chat about. We loved the ciders and bought quite a few to take home and give as gifts as well. I still have the tasting glass as a candle holder on my stove (scared we would break it!) so I can always remember our trip! A must stop! Also I must mention, we started our day at a different winery/cider tasting place and the girl there actually told us not to come here and that the cider wasn't good, etc. SHE WAS WRONG and also we really didn't like her negative attitude towards a neighboring business. I have been wanting to try this place for a while as I have have enjoyed their cider from the grocery before. The staff was super friendly and very informative about all the different offerings they had. Prices were great, as it was only a couple of bucks to sit down and try several different ciders from a menu of about 15 or more different varieties, some constant ones they offer, and others being only seasonal offerings. Along with that, the offer shirts and ciders to buy by the bottle, which were also reasonably priced. I personally enjoy their ciders because they aren't overly carbonated and sugary like some of the popular ones you find at the market. They rely on the natural sweetness from their fruits to do all the work, and it offers a nice change of pace compared to your usual bar or brewery.
