We found our DJ through Black Tie Entertainment, and our assigned DJ was Andrew Nelson. One of the things that really impressed us about Black Tie is that all their DJs go through both DJ and MC training -- and they don't subcontract, which gave us a lot of peace of mind. When you book, you have an initial consultation with someone from their team who asks thoughtful questions about your style and preferences, and then they match you with DJs based on your vision. That's how we were paired with Andrew. Their communication and planning tools were fantastic. They provide an online portal where you and your DJ can both input and update everything from song requests to timeline details. I had several follow-up calls with Andrew to make sure he really understood our vibe -- and on the day of, the energy and music were absolutely perfect. The ceremony went off without a hitch, and once the dancing started, Andrew really shined. His transitions, timing, and song selections for the dance party were spot-on -- the exact fun, high-energy vibe we were hoping for. Our guests were raving about how much fun they had, and the dance floor stayed full the entire time. There were a couple of minor hiccups -- our ceremony ran long, and Andrew needed about an hour to reset for the reception (which we knew beforehand but did not account for), so there was a short delay outdoors in the heat. And there were a few moments of uncertainty for what was happening next -- but honestly, those were small things that only I or the planner would have noticed. From a guest perspective, everything was seamless. Andrew made up for it 100% once the party started, and we couldn't have been happier with how the night ended. From the moment we met Mike, the energy and simplicity he brought to this process really drew us to him. While we were initially concerned over such an awarded DJs availability we were swiftly assured he was available for our day and would be there for any and all questions we would have and he did not disappoint. He made this entire process fun and simple, we created a Spotify playlist for each section of our wedding and as we were out driving or blasting music while doing chores, whenever we found a song we wanted to include, we'd just add it to the respective playlist. When Mike was ready for us to start providing music for inspiration, we were able to link up those Spotify playlists and the entire process was very smooth. We opted to give Mike artistic liberties with the playlist and I don't think there was a single point in the wedding where the dance floor was empty. From the first dance to the last song played my cousins, aunts, uncles, friends, and family were all out having such a fantastic time! We didn't get to hear much from cocktail hour due to pictures but whenever we did catch a song, it was always a hit we wanted to sing along to. Black tie events is a great company that had a very easy process to follow. They helped us walk through the steps to get a DJ/MC. The site has all the DJ's with some "about me" videos to see who you will best relate with. You get to talk to those you are interested in before making a final decision. With Black Tie, you do not just get a DJ, you get an MC & DJ for your day (you NEED an MC). We spoke to a few DJ's and Rick was who we chose. Rick was absolutely amazing! We spoke to Rick multiple times leading up to the wedding so he could get to know us and plan out every detail. He helped make our wedding day run smoothly and provided true entertainment. He has a great personality and helped keep the energy up all night. You can choose how involved you want Rick to be. If you want him to interact with the crowd and get them energized, he will. If you want him to stay quiet behind the DJ booth and just play music, he will. It is great that you can choose, but we suggest allowing him to interact with everyone. When we spoke to Rick about the timeline and events to do, we had no idea what we were missing and how critical an MC is. He walked us through different events and games there are to see what we wanted to do. He had suggestions on a timeline to help make things flow smoothly. He worked alongside our planner to make sure we stayed on our timeline and ensured our wedding vision came to fruition. Again, you NEED an MC/DJ, not just a DJ. When it came to music, this was important since my husband and I are big music people. Rick was super flexible and understanding that we had a list of music that we wanted to be played. There is a portal where we set the songs for the first dance, mother/father/daughter/son dances, and all those types of things. We had playlists where we added specific songs/artists that we wanted played for each part (cocktail hours, dinner, dancing). We got to set a percentage of when we wanted only our music, his choice, or a little of both. We were happy with our choices and Rick was able to read the crowd and know what to play when we gave him the freedom to play his choices. The only thing I will suggest is if you want a particular song you choose toward end of night, just let him know so it is not played too early. Everything was so well organized and every little detail was planned out. DJ Kevin Bates at Black Tie Entertainment did such an amazing job for my wedding at the Silk Mill in Fredericksburg VA and I could not recommend him more. Booking with Black Tie was super easy, and they provided a great online site to stay organized with planning not only the music, but other key events in the ceremony and reception. Working with Kevin was almost like working with a wedding planner; he made suggestions for fun dances/activities to include in the reception and provided great advice for the timeline of events. You can tell that Kevin really cares about going above and beyond his contracted duties to make sure guests have a great time. A wedding DJ does so much more than play music; Kevin also managed to timing and transitions from the ceremony to cocktail hour, cocktail hour to dinner, dinner to speeches, speeches to dances, and other activities. He also made sure to double and triple check the pronunciations of my family members' Chinese names before announcing them, which I really appreciated. Kevin provided great music for the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception. At the reception, he kept the dance floor going all night long, and he mixed in our requested songs at the perfect times. Very impressed with Black Tie Entertainment - the impressed us at the wedding expo, and then we attended a 'meet the DJs' night where we saw how they kept the event running smoothly and had each DJ do one section so you could see them work, and then you had time to wander around and meet them all and see who you worked well with. We picked DJ Chase and so pleased with our decision. The online forms helped gather our thoughts and the two skype meetings left us knowing that things would be great. But who would have tough that a wedding of some middle age folks would have a packed dance floor from beginning to end. Chase was able to seamlessly integrate with our venue and all events happened smoothly and everyone had a great time. Blacktie Entertainment provided the BEST entertainment experience for our February 27 2016 wedding. This business was a pleasure to work with and the team behind it was absolutely phenomenal. We were assigned Eddy Bobby as our DJ and spent the past couple of months working with him to organize the entertainment aspect of our event. Since our dinner reception was black-tie optional, Eddy came in prepared and looking very sharp in his tux -- we were very appreciative of his attention to detail. Eddy did an extraordinary job at organizing our play list and even went to great lengths to find over a dozen very particular genres of music that we had wanted played at specific times during our cocktail hour and dinner reception. He even did his research and was able to dig up a classic for all Greek wedding receptions --Orea Pou Ine Nifi Mas! He did a phenomenal job at reading the guests and made our reception a blast and truly an event to remember. We had a huge hiccup earlier in the day with another vendor that had thrown off our schedule by 40 minutes. We were so worried that we would not have enough time for our photographer and filmmakers to cover all of our planned dances and reception events ( once in a lifetime key moments such as our cake cutting and the bouquet toss, etc). Eddy --like Clark Kent in a tux-- swooped in and came to the rescue. We were so grateful that he was able to get us back on our original schedule, allowing us to capture all of those important moments and events with our photographers and filmmakers. Having him there completely eliminated the stress caused by the botched vendor a couple of hours ago. Before we knew it, we were back in the groove all thanks to Eddy. Eddy was professional, attentive, knows his craft well and does an exceptional job executing it. He truly made our event memorable and one that neither we or our guests will ever forget. Black Tie DJs was recommended to me by multiple friends, so after interviewing a few DJs, I contacted Black Tie to research further. I was SO very impressed by the professionalism of Black Tie DJs. I loved that got to have an initial meeting with the company and they paired us with the DJ they thought would best fit with what we were looking for. Our DJ, Brad, was proactive in calling me multiple times throughout the year leading up to the wedding, and he made himself very available to help with the planning whenever we needed it. He was almost like a private wedding consultant! I had no idea how the 'timeline of events' should go at a wedding, but I felt very comfortable and confident in Brad's suggestions, knowing that he ran many weddings in the past and was very in tune with how a wedding should flow. This was a HUGE relief. My (now) husband and I like alternative music, and he understood exactly what we were looking for. He carefully went through my "must play", "would like to play", and "do not play" lists, asking great questions and making suggestions that I did not even think of! On the day of the wedding, he and his assistant were on time, very polite and easy to work with, and gave just the right amount of interaction and help (since we noted that we did not want a 'highly interactive' DJ on the wedding day). He was able to get a feel for the crowd and got everyone on the dance floor for partying but was also able to slow things down so we could enjoy time with our friends and family around the venue. He also took requests from our guests and smoothly blended them into the music of the evening. Black Tie provided all the tools we needed to plan out the music for the ceremony and reception, which is a big task, but the tools let you easily pick out your special songs for events like entering the reception or the first dance. They also have lists where you can put songs you want played at the reception or not played at all. They worked with us to fit services within our budget and we ended up using their DJ, Bose sound system, and Uplighting services. We booked (or so we thought!!!) a DJ through Black Tie Entertainment. We had an initial consultation with them explaining what we were looking for. Our booking rep recommended that we come out that weekend to their "Meet the DJ Night". The idea of the event is a great one. From pictures and videos, you can't get a true sense of a DJ's style as an MC. The event took place in Woodbridge, VA and was set up like a mock wedding. They had each of the DJ's do a brief demo of their style and abilities on the mic for different portions of the wedding. After that is all over, each DJ has a table set up with their calendar showing their available dates. We met with one DJ that we loved and he was available for our date. We signed a hold sheet with him and turned it; the final thing we needed to book for our wedding was completed. That night and the next morning I let the other DJ's I had been speaking with know that we went a different direction. Mid-afternoon they sent an email to my fiance letting us know that the DJ we wanted actually wasn't available, but this other guy who is almost $800 more is! They spent all night at their event preaching to us that their professionalism and attention to detail is unmatched. That they will help coordinate your day and the different things that need to take place and announce and organize accordingly. Problem is, they can't read a calendar to know what day is what apparently. When I posed my apprehension to the booking agent, he spent the first paragraph of his email torching his own employee and then continuing to push a DJ on us that I said I did not want. If you are going to claim to me that it was because of his "Inexperience" as it is his "Rookie year", then maybe you should have the owner or some other senior person helping him out to get his feet wet to ensure the calendars are correct. Also, it's 2018...why are you still using a piece of paper and just drawing X's or highlighting to show availability? Use a tablet or something like that so that everyone's calendars are updated for them in real time!!! As I look back on the experience I had with them, their behaviors and actions scream anything but professional. 1 - You do NOT torch your own employee to a customer, even if you know they messed up. You own that as a company and you back your guy. 2 - On more than one occasion during their demo of events, they would introduce one song and play something totally different. 3 - When they demoed how great it was that they could control their uplights from a cell phone app, the app wasn't connected to the lights and therefore did nothing. A few awkward moments later, they connected it and were able to show it to everyone in attendance. Also, don't try to sell people like this is some novel thing that you have...everyone with decent stage lights made in the last 3 years has a cell phone app controller. So, now, here we are back at square one. The other DJ's I had been talking to are now booked and I am back on the hunt. But I'd rather DJ my own wedding or have a friend do it than trust these "professionals". read more

I contracted with Black tie for my wedding in November 2014 and was excited because of all the great reviews and the experience that Dave, the owner, said all his DJs have. We contracted for lights, photobooth, and dj services (with a dj assistant and extra assistant to run a guest book at the photobooth). I have to start by saying that Matt, our DJ, had a great fun non-cheesy manner at the microphone and the music flowed beautifully. We gave Matt a lot of guidance about what kinds of music we wanted and he did a great job sticking to that style. We also had an entrance with musicians and dancers partway through the night and he coordinated well with them. The lighting was also just what I wanted. However, Matt screwed up the speeches and first dances timeline such that my new FIL did not have the chance to do the blessing before dinner he was planning for. The timeline screwup happened despite spending an hour with Matt going over the written down timeline (emailed to him and input into his online forms - that's 2 media of timeline delivery) a week before and again just a few days before and the day of coordinator printing copies for him - and going over the timeline once more right before the entrance. There is really nothing else I could have done. The guests generally had no idea anything went wrong but my FIL definitely was disappointed. Also, on the company's online prep forms, I had also specifically said no electric slide, and he played it anyway. On the photobooth, the assistant for the guestbook could not make it so the owner came for a few hours instead. To start, the WRONG DATE was on the printed pictures until one of my guests pointed out the problem. Also, at our initial meetings I had asked if they were going to have certain types of props - in particular frames - and Dave said they would be buying more props in the months ahead and that was on the list. I can see how that conversation might fall through the cracks but either way, there were no frames and I thought the props selection was pretty paltry. Dave compensated us with a tiny percentage refund - less than half of what I asked for based on the problems and reduced staff - but at least he made a gesture. read more

Most of the DJs are fine, except a few. Had a terrible experience with one DJ in particular. The guy continued to sound very eager and interested in our tastes in music during our conversation, and even sent a specific date and time to meet up closer to the wedding. We confirmed the time, but later came to find out through the owner that the DJ would not be a best fit for us. Found out his expertise in the type of music we liked was never his specialty, but he had us thoroughly convinced that he was the best man for the job when compared to the other DJs within black tie, and knew exactly what we wanted despite never even giving us a sample of his skills. Probably the worst is the owner. Understanding at first, but the minute you try to reason with him and try to tell him, inform him of any issues, specifically in this case that one of his DJs had mislead us, gave us false information, and tried to put on a character face that was not him (because obviously thats exactly what happened), he would shout back at you and become super defensive. At one instance even pointed out and said "I don't even know why I ever gave you people such a deal." Needless to say, we immediately cancelled the contract and went with a previously recommended entertainment company for our DJ needs, and have never looked back since. This owner needs to dial the F*** back and learn to communicate with his clients better. Its like talking to a 5th grader who doesn't want to admit his own mistakes. read more

We used Black Tie Entertainment for our August 2016 wedding. We had very specific taste in music and because we are religious we requested that certain music not be played. We were assigned DJ Eamonn and he was so respectful and easy to work with. He listened to what we wanted and made the effort to deliver.
