I absolutely love Black Sheep Yoga! I have been practicing yoga for over 20 years and have explored so so many studios throughout San Diego County - and BSY is one of the best! I love how relaxed, unpretentious, and welcoming all the teachers and other students are. I really have enjoyed all of the classes and teachers, but my very favorite teachers are Erich and Barb. Erich is so intentional and attentive and makes me feel more connected to self and universe. Barb has phenomenal sequences and is so skilled in her focus on alignment. It was good class. I took a trip on July 4th weekend to avoid fireworks for my dogs and I stayed in Carlsbad. I needed to take yoga class and I took one class there. The lady at desk was nice and it could be the owner. I was just got there right before the class since I'm not familiar around that area but she welcomed me. The class wasn't too challenging but I didn't mind. I do t have to take tough classes all the time and also the teacher(I couldn't ask her name) has nice pace. The coffee place next to this studio seems popular so I wish I had coffee there but I didn't feel I want some coffee after doing something nice to my body. I parked on street and I was lucky to find the spot right in front. I would come back if I will be this area in the future. read more

Great community yoga studio right in the hustle bustle of Coast Hwy. It's street parking only, but that was never a problem to find something within a block away. It's right next to a clothing store that plays loud upbeat music, which was both fun and distracting during practice. Distractions were kind of the norm of my experience here. My first class someone arrived late and kept banging on the door and made the teacher stop class to let her in; once she was in, she plopped down in the middle of the room and kept getting up and walking back and forth to the back to fiddle with her keys, phone, and water bottle. Another class someone walked in the back door during class and interrupted class to ask the teacher questions about the studio. But hey, it's yoga and you just go with the flow. They have such a welcoming environment and cater to a variety of yogis. All the classes were great, but pretty mellow for my taste. Ultimately I want to leave a class feeling like I worked out, and that just wasn't the case here. The exception was Lex -- she did a flow+ class that incorporated a workshop-like approach to advanced poses. I loved her classes. read more

A place to go for restorative or yin classes in the evening. They will prepare you for a good nights sleep, the kind where you won't be counting sheep. Black Sheep Yoga is located on one of the best city blocks in Downtown Oceanside, NCSD. A free tiny library, handmade goods and a coffee roaster steps away. Easy parking for evening classes as most businesses close by 6pm. I felt right at home the moment I stepped into the studio. The husband and co-owner told me his wife and owner would be teaching the evening restorative class on my first visit. I loved how they set up the props needed in advance. a nice touch. The class was thoughtful and relaxing. At the end of shavasana chimes were used. I liked the sound so much I inquired about them. They are called Koshi chimes and they come from France. There are four different sounds, representing the four elements. Air, Earth, Fire and Water. You can view them online and play a video clip of the sounds they create. I was attuned to "air"which is not surprising based on my astrological sign. They don't sell them in the studio but the info was provided., They have a variety of merchandise; cute tops, fun leggings and yoga inspired jewelry are just several items; just breathe and go with the flow, are good messages in practice. Great prices too. The class was full, the energy was positive and the owners were present. Love this studio. It is a true yoga community. It takes a village mentality. Many new teachers to pick from. Not the same teacher 3 days in a row. Plenty of variety and all teachers are respectful and ask before moving to your space for any hands on adjusting. One disappoinment is we have an amazing teacher that started doing some limited "optional" partner yoga poses. The class loved it the energy was fun and it was a real community bonding part of the class. Sadly one student that came once and did not participate "again it was stated optional" wrote a bad review and now all teachers are banned from doing any partner poses. I hope they reconsider. I was invited to another studio today and they did partner yoga poses. I got to meet a 75 year old woman Russian school teacher who became my partner. It was a truly community bonding experience. Overall I love Black Sheep community. For those that are new, if you don't love a teacher or a specific pose. Pic another teacher no need to write a negative review. Negative energy does not fit with one core value in yoga. Not to say we should all stuff our feelings but a simple comment to the owner directly or the teacher. Negative reviews effect everyone. I've been coming here on a drop-in basis a few times a year for the entire time Black Sheep has been open. Up until recently I had mostly really good experiences here. My only concern in the past has been that the restroom is IN the studio, so there are some sanitation issues when people are going in and out of it barefoot, but that's not even my problem here. Earlier this year, I went to a restorative class that was so packed that I had to do legs up the wall on some kind of electrical box/tubing, so they don't seem to have appropriate capacity limits, but that's not a huge deal. Then, about a month ago, I took a class where the teacher had people pair up and physically stretch each other, which was so jarring and uncomfortable. If I had known they were going to do that I just wouldn't have come. The teacher also pulled her phone out and seemed to be recording people doing these exercises. All of it felt so intrusive and inappropriate, especially without prior warning. I decided to go back because, as I said, I've gone here sporadically forever and mostly had good experiences. This time the teacher was a little off with her instruction and too quiet to hear, but that's not where I had a problem. There was a kid under 7 in the room! The child spent half the class running around the back pulling blocks off the shelf. I couldn't focus the entire time because of it and the fact that the studio let that happen is insane. Still giving it 3 stars because it's a good resource for the community, but the quality of classes is getting so iffy that I can't see myself going back again, which is a huuuuuge bummer. read more

They have a good variety of classes and instructors! It's a pretty spacious studio. They seem to have a good amount of times available throughout the days. I think my favorite class is with an instructor who I believe her name is Elexis. At the end she treats everyone to a song which is delightful and so unique! The only down side, parking can be a little challenging since it's on Coast Highway. Usually, there are spots throughout the neighborhood. Give yourself extra time to find parking. Also, they don't have a place to re-fill your water bottle. They do sell water for $1 so bring some $ if you need to re-fill/purchase some water. This place is like my sanctuary! I love this community of people. I hadn't taken any yoga classes in a while and my friend convinced me to try it out. Despite my reluctance- I was pleasantly surprised this gem is in O'side! Yes parking can be an issue but there's plenty within a short drive or I plan ahead and rarely have an issue. This is such a special place and the people are kind and considerate. Always welcoming and accommodating. The instructors are soulful and care about the student experience. In the past 8 months, I go about 3-4 times a week, I have had the space to create my own practice within the class. I absolutely love this studio. I have been to candlelight stretch and restore with Sharon a number of times. This class is just what I need to relax and restore. I started going because I had an injury and had some flexibility/ mobility issues. This was really helpful for that injury. I continue to go to practice self care, I work at a computer all day and get tense and tired.I always feel refreshed and peaceful after a class. I feel like it is a physical and mental readjustment! I've been going to Black Sheep for almost a year now and it has been the most wonderful journey. When I first walked in with a Groupon, I had never done yoga before and had no idea what to expect. I'll admit that I was completely lost that first class, but I never felt like I was holding anyone back and the teachers will help you with modifications if you need them. I've seen the studio go through some changes, both in class availability and ownership and so far all the transitions have been smooth. One thing I love it that the instructors are so friendly. I'm friends with at least two of them on Facebook, instructors make an effort to know who you are, and there is a real family atmosphere among everyone that attends. I'm absolutely hooked on yoga now and am even thinking of a long term goal of learning how to teach. It's hard to make exercise a priority, but when you have so much fun it really becomes addictive. When I started the studio had a different owner, so this may no longer be true but they were able to work out a really good deal with me for paying up front and doing a year pass. For Beginners: Don't be shy! Everyone has to start somewhere and you'll feel comfortable and safe in this studio. I recommend taking one of their foundations classes or an all-level flow with Ashley your first time (I started with rock n roll and it was challenging). You can rent a mat but I would say you should buy one, since they do get pretty sweat-drenched. Bring water (you can buy this there too if you need to) and a hand towel. You might not need these things every time, but it never hurts to be prepared. Also let the instructor know that you are new so they can give you extra instruction and show you how to use blocks if you need them. Enjoy! For Yogis: This is a great place to get deeper in your practice. They now offer "level 2/3" classes which are more advanced. They always look out for your safety and offer lots of variety in their classes. Karin and Patrick tend to teach the more advanced classes so look for them. They also do workshops for an extra fee and sometimes do special themed classes (like a radiohead sesh for example). Savasanas are usually long enough to actually enjoy and classes range from Yin to Rock n' Roll. It does get crowded sometimes but I've never yet seen it so full that they had to turn anyone away. read more

Having a desire to get myself physically and mentally fit, accustomed to participating in Kung-Fu when I resided in O.C., Black Sheep Yoga Studio is something I wanted to try and glad I did. On first visit, felt very comfortable with staff and other students practicing yoga. Never pushed and never rushed. Enrolled in the two week unlimited for a nominal fee to see if I liked it. Good way to start to see if it fits you and your schedule. Different teachers there are giving variety to this activity. And now coming up on a month of participation, I found my resting heart rate is lower. My bone density, and muscle mass has increased. And my body fat and metabolic age has decreased. If you follow anyone one in endurance sports, many of the successful athletes use yoga as part of their training regimen. Yoga was recommended to me by a doctor friend of mine, who from his experience, found health benefits; loss of fat and muscle gain; not to mention quieting the mind for those with ADD or ADHD without drugs. Black Sheep Yoga Studio has no mirrors in the studio for those self-conscious individuals. And most of all, very relaxed there. I have been to about 20 yoga studios throughout south and north San Diego and have gone to classes on and off for 4 years. Trying out all styles from bikram, hot vinyasa, cold yoga, etc and never really found a home or desire to commit to a consistent practice. No studio compelled me to become a reoccurring member who paid dues. When I made a permanent move to Oceanside a year ago I never dreamed that I would find a place to practice as inviting, fun, and easy going as Black Sheep. I now have a reasonably priced monthly membership and go about 4-5 times a week. The 6:30am class with Patrick is a must and so are the 9:00am weekend classes. Prepare to work when Patrick is teaching and bring a towel. You will feel fantastic after! Sharon, Kelly, and Whitney have great classes as well throughout the week and focus on proper alignment and breathing. I like to alternate their classes in place of the more rigorous ones and you will definitely feeling like you're floating on a cloud after. Sometimes you can hear people on the other side of their wall... it can be distracting. They pack you in there pretty tightly. I once took a class with Candace last year and it was terrible. The music was too loud and you couldn't hear her instructions. I tried telling her during class, but was dismissed. Overall it's an ok studio, I've been to better. I've been enjoying classes at Black Sheep Yoga for over a year now and really love the relaxed vibe and convenient schedule. There's so many great instructors and class styles to choose from, plus they have lots of class times every day which is important. Everyone is so nice and the space is beautiful. Lots of street parking too. LOVE their new class on Saturdays 4-5pm...Yoga For Athletes...It's breath focused and slightly heated room. It's just right in combo in my opinion, not too fast, not too slow, mindful motion and connecting the breath like a moving meditation. I was able to get better alignment and go deeper into the poses. They also sell some pretty cool stuff here and it seems like I'm always going home with some yoga clothes :-) All the classes and teachers here are great, so definitely give this place a try. There's also a great acupuncture and massage place next door and coffees houses if you want hang out and chill afterwards or grab some breakfast. Its a real cool community of folks. read more

Oooh! A new yoga studio in North County! What particularly attracted me to this studio was that the classes are non-heated (most of the studios in North County SD mostly/only offer heated hatha/vinyasa sequences) and their vinyasa courses were mostly all-level. Not to mention some of the good reviews on here. After much hemming and hawing one day, I decided to make a trip up to Oceanside to see what the big deal was. The moment I walked in there I was greeted very warmly by one of the instructors and the owner. Once I filled out the necessary paperwork, I was led into their studio room, which was moderately sized. Not too big, but there weren't that many of us in the class. I almost hesitate to write this review 'cause I don't want it to get too crowded. However, I really liked this place, and I want them to stay in business...besides, I'm all the way in SD, so most likely it would be hard for me to make most of the classes anyway. But anyway, the class was nicely paced and accommodated all students, regardless of their experience level. We were encouraged to do advanced modifications if we could; I appreciate that because a.) it gives you that edge to challenge yourself and b.) if you want to take it easy, you have that option to take the lesser modification. Each instructor has their own style; some are more challenging than others. If you want more of a challenge, you can take their Flow Plus class. Want to relax? Take their Yin class. They also have a Yoga Fundamentals course for anyone who is new to yoga or could use a refresher on the basics. The founder of this studio (Patrick Garrison) is one of the friendliest people I've ever met. You can tell he genuinely cares about his students and the community; every once in a while the studio holds a donation class to give back to the Oceanside community. Isn't that great? As for their boutique area, it's moderately sized (there are only 2 main rooms in this studio...the studio itself (which is the backroom) and the boutique/storefront). A nice selection of yoga clothes with the Black Sheep Yoga logo, some Manduka items, and other yoga essentials. You keep your personal items in the front room cubbies (which are deceptively long and spacious). I love this studio, and I encourage anyone in the North County area to try them out. If I lived in North County, I would practice here; I am excited that Oceanside has opened a studio with great potential to become popular among the locals. I've been to a LOT of studios in the San Diego area, and Black Sheep Yoga is one of the best in North County. Seriously!!!
