You cannot hear the echoes from a photo, but the ambiance is classic high school play set and props.

If i was abducted by aliens and thet wanted to convince me that I WASN'T abducted at all, by building a replica of earth for me to have as my habitat, THIS place is probably pretty close to what they would conceive as a replica restaurant. It remands me of the restaurants and store fronts the Soviets would hastily construct to convince American tourists that their country wasn't actually falling apart. There are too many echoes. The other customers all seem like actors and they are all named either Jimmy or Brenda. The whole meal I felt like I was being lied to, and it wasn't convincing. That said, the food was good. So i will give it credit for that.

I walked in at 7pm on a Friday with my family and it was completely empty. Ordering is self-service, and it felt a bit awkward ordering in an empty restaurant while three bored employees sat nearby with earbuds in looking at their phones. I had to wave one down and ask how to order an item for kids that was advertised on the large menu near the ordering kiosks; he told me it was no longer offered which was a bit annoying. That said, the food was very good. I'm pretty sure there is sugar in the fry seasoning; this was a bit weird but the fries were still quite good. By the time 7:30pm rolled around there were several people eating inside. Black Salt is decorated well and I'd bet would be very crowded if it were in a better spot and maybe had more drink options.

This place is a must stop in Blacksburg. From the moment we walked in the service was great. They were kind and helpful figuring out what to try. They have a small menu, but that's because they do very well at it. The burgers were tasty and the fries were crunchy on the outside and pillowy soft on the inside. I highly recommend the spicy cheese curds and their signature sauce. Only downside was the use of styrofoam to serve everything.

First off the ordering is all self service through a kiosk which is nice. Everything is laid out and easy to you. Second the burger and fries were made to order and nice and hot. Burger was on point and had great flavor. The fries were piping hot and I enjoyed the seasoning. Definitely a good spot and I will try the other items in the menu in the future.

Black Salt is a quality spot, and I hope it becomes a Blacksburg institution. I have liked everything I've tried, but would say that the standouts are their fries and the fried chicken sandwich. It's a relatively new restaurant that is still finding its footing (the decor and indoor environment are slowly evolving, the menu will grow every now and then, etc.), but the food has always been solid. The pricepoints are probably higher than a lot of college students would prefer to be paying, but still reasonable. The burgers are good, the fried chicken sandwiches are excellent, and the fries are some of the best in town in my opinion. All of the meat is halal, so it's been a great place to visit with my friends who can only eat halal food. Black Salt is owned and operated by the same guy who opened FOAM-O, and he definitely has a clear vision for what he wants it to be. I'm a fan of the place, and think its worth checking out for those who haven't yet!

After reading some of the other reviews, I thought I'd check out this place myself and form my own opinion; especially, in Blacksburg where a new restaurant is big news since there aren't that many haha. This place is definitely a work-in-progress with all the decorations they have lying around to their menu constantly changing and that's okay. But just walking in the first time, I loved the ambiance and the decor. The food: Note: Their menu is in progress still. They've gotten rid of the tacos for wings, which I'm a fan of and will have to try next time for sure. Black Salt Cheeseburger single (everything on it including the paid toppings) - Great char on the meat, delicious sauce, fluffy bun. Turkey bacon was decent. Wish it were more on the crispy side. The egg was scrambled so there was no yolk. The caramelized onions were disappointing. They tasted too sweet almost embodying the "caramel" part of it too well. I don't know how they do this but it seems like they add sugar to it to get that color rather than go through a natural caramelization from the onions sugars. I've seen a lot of rants on here about $1 for the caramelized onions and I understand the sentiment about having to pay for this topping since it's such a weird portion size (regardless if the owners decide to give you an even bigger scoop). I was okay with it but I took an open-faced burger picture as a precaution to those who might be interested in it. Black Salt Cheeseburger single (lettuce, tomato, pickle) - Girlfriend has this one. Said she loved the sauce and buns the most. Interestingly, the "single" here is 2 patties. The double is an extra patty on top of that. The fries - These were amazing. Great texture on the outside and the seasoning was good. Would have loved a ketchup dispenser though as I felt bad taking like 20 packs of ketchup. I will be checking out this place again to see what they've changed. I know the owner is open to suggestions/improvements and that's why the review is partially at a 4* for now. But for everyone on the fence about eating here, check it out!

The new burger in the burg! And it's good.......?? So overall experience was positive, so I give a 4/5 star. But the food alone definitely would not have made it 4. We went in and ordered around 2:30am, and the food took over 30 minutes to come out. It was two orders of burgers and fries. Unacceptable! Or so I was thinking, and the dude calls our order and explains that they were exceptionally short-staffed tonight, and that my friends and I came in right after a series of huge order. Then offered me and my bud free drinks! Honestly, if you are reading this, here's a tip. Those small things count, man. You giving away a 1.50 free drinks made the whole wait 10times better. Now for the food - it is good. Fries are actually reallly good, and they are large in quantity, crispy, and hot (basically my perfect fries). For the burgers, the meat is .... good! But I really think you should make caramelized onions offered for free. Cmon, we know how much onions cost, man. Buns were the least favorite though. It was way too big (especially the top piece) and dry/tough. You could probably either serve them hot(toasted) or perhaps change to a softer bun that doesnt take away the joy of biting into your juicy patties. Overall, experience was good, the workers were friendly and approachable. But don't forget to be professional when you need to. So I notice that you took notice and made changes that are very visible already through yelp reviews and whatnot. That is awesome, keep at it. So I wanna close off with some tips/suggestions/opinions. - the space feels too big and empty. The area from where you pay to where you get your food is awkward because clearly it's not like it's gonna be served by the time you walk over there. No suggestion, but you could maybe ask an interior design major friend for some suggestions. - ah, the pricing! I know everyone has been talking about it as well, and yeah I couldn't agree. With this price, I am treating this place as a special occasion type of price-line. $11 for regular burger and fries is a steep price at a college town! Your pro is that it's open late, but no one really wants to spend $11-12 out at 2:30am. They rather go home and eat ramen unless it's like cookout where you stuff yourself with $6 tray full of fried gorgeous mess. - this drives me nuts. Ketchup! Please get a pump. With the amount of fries you are serving, I went through 5 packs of tiny ketchup. Please get a pump!!!! - make caramelized onions free!! Please! - I like the open kitchen design. But it seems like the huge kitchen space is not being utilized to its maximum. - Please use gloves when you are directly handling food. I saw that one of the worker was picking up buns with bare hands. That's a big no. - the food serve time could be improved - your sauce is good, but not too memorable. Maybe make it a tiny bit stronger perhaps? Thanks!

Came here for it's unofficial opening and there were only two guys working in the back so we were waiting at the register for a while before we were even able to order. The burgers and fries did taste good for premade and frozen food but all of the flavor comes from the sauce they put on. Their restaurant layout is super confusing and echo-y and they're definitely overpriced for Blacksburg. They also ran out of their sauce and ketchup and it was only 5 pm. So if you like the taste of sauce and bun, go for it.

The burger is really delicious. I love the sauce that it comes with. I also got wings and they were tender and juicy but not crispy. The sauce was a very basic Buffalo. The fries really aren't flavorful at all a main complaint is that I ordered a side of fries that was $3.00 and this is how many it came with.

We were seated immediately and helped to some menus (love the menu sooooo much)! The TV was playing White Chicks and later played Madea's Big Happy Family. Very nice selection. We got our orders taken quickly and it didn't take long for the food to come out! I got the Fish and Chips with Garlic Parmesan Fries! Both items were so nice and crispy! But be aware that the garlic Parmesan is actually a sauce and not like Garlic powder and Parmesan cheese- so it's more of a wet (but still crispy) fry. The Ginger & Mint Tea was also very yummy and refreshing- barely tasted the tea and almost tasted fizzy but nevertheless very refreshing to wash everything down. Just overall such good food and good vibes! Will be coming again and again!

***3 1/2 stars***…read more This was kind of all over the place, and a prescient reminder that sometimes you get what you pay for. My top-tier chum who literally went to the school of hospitality (down the street!) and I stopped here for a much-needed recharge after she led a comprehensive campus tour in 90-degree heat. There weren't a ton of eating options - graduation was apparently last week, and the offseason for the campus town has officially commenced - but this one looked fairly decent for what it was. The menu was also intriguing, with both sushi and Mediterranean-style cuisine. In my experience, jamming a bunch of random types of food onto a menu can be very hit or miss, but I wouldn't say that was really an issue here. We both had sticker shock or lack thereof when we looked at the cocktail menu. Margaritas are about $6, and "top shelf" ones are $8? Incredible stuff. I went with the top shelf frozen berries margaritas, and specifically requested Don Julio. That said - and maybe this is a reflection of my having a more adult palate than the college student target demo, or maybe I'm just officially a degenerate at this point - it wasn't a strong marg at all, and both of us ended up getting extra shots of Don Julio to make it taste better. So the additional tequila brought the total marg prices to $10, which is still incredible in my opinion, given what we're dealing with in the NYC metro area. Since we were on a pretty naughty vacation, I tried to tread water a bit and went with the salmon teriyaki bowl (about $20 I think). Honestly really hit the spot. The salmon was fresh/flavorful, and as you can see from the attached, a ridiculously generous portion. I wasn't in the mood for the accompanying side salad (again, I was on vacation), but the rice and salmon were a distant memory quickly enough. I was also kind of obsessed with the plate that it came on - I'm not really sure how to describe it other than that it looked like dishware you'd find in the Flintstones' house. It sort of looked like a sculpture of a piece of bent tree bark? I know, I'm not giving this justice. We also split the bang bang shrimp app, which was very good as well - maybe a TOUCH over-fried, but I think that's part of the package with the naughty appetizer section of a menu. Would get both of those items again in a heartbeat. The service was honestly pretty mediocre, and a big reason this ultimately was just an okay experience. A shame, given that we both legitimately liked the food. Our waiter was definitely confused by my chum's drink order (which, to be fair, WAS a little off the beaten path - she requested one of their non-alcoholic mango lychee lemonade, plus a separate shot of Don Julio), and our drinks ultimately showed up at the same time as our food. He also came back to our table after about 15 minutes to reconfirm her drink order. Not great, and a reminder that there's no harm in bringing a pen and a pad with you to the table. This wasn't terrible by any means, but was an uneven experience. Frankly, I think expectations should be a little tempered in a college town, where the average diner is probably in their early 20s and pretty low maintenance when it comes to their food and drink preferences. But if they figured out the service here, they'd really have something.

It was really cool to see that the owner is truly passionate about his restaurant and will show up to put in the work, even during the later hours. In terms of the food, I went with the Hungry Hokie which was a mashed potato bowl with with bits of meatloaf and chicken, green beans, macaroni and cheese. It also came with a biscuit or cornbread, I opted in with the cornbread. The food was absolutely hearty and had pretty good flavor!
