We have been customers of Black Olive for years. Today, they lost us as customers because their customer service was awful. I ordered my regular dish (gyro platter) and asked that instead of fries they serve me a Greek salad. The waitress told me it would be an upcharge of $3.50, to which I said fine. When my platter came out the "Greek salad" was nothing but a whole bunch of lettuce and tomatoes with dressing. I asked the waitress if this was, in fact, a Greek salad (to confirm they didnt make a mistake and sent me a house salad instead) and she said yes. I said, well Greek salads are supposed to have olives and feta cheese, right? She pointed at the ONLY olive on my platter and said "there's an olive"! I said, if you are going to up-charge me then I want a real Greek salad, please. She said, ok give me a minute and went back (I assumr to talk to the manager). She then returned with 4 olives and said, the manager says you can have some olives but if you want feta cheese, you have to pay extra for it. I told her, no thanks. Keep your olives and your cheese. I am extremely disappointed in how the manager handled this scenario. All they had to do was send some feta and olives to make it right. Instead, they were asking to keep charging more money. This wasnt about the money, this was about knowing how to keep your customers happy. Customer satisfaction brings more business in the end. Needless to say, I will never return to this restaurant again. I hope their feta cheese and olives was worth the loss of customers. read more

Shocked at the 4 and 5 star reviews of this place and thinking they can only be given by someone who hasn't been to very good Greek restaurants. This is a solid 3 star place. We chose to try this place for the first time rather than go to Ouzo in Hightstown or Pithari Taverna in New Brunswick where we typically go. It was my dad's 65th birthday dinner and I made the reservation with a note that we were celebrating this special occasion. The fact we were celebrating wasn't even mentioned. The restaurant is in a strip mall. The inside is small but nice enough. Nothing really Greek about it. No Greek music playing, no blue and white color scheme, just a few black and white pictures of Greece and a khaki color scheme. I didn't feel like I was in a Greek taverna by any means which is the feel I typically like when I go for Greek food. This is a BYOB and we grabbed two bottles of wine from a store nearby. Our waitress was EXCELLENT. Great timing, very pleasant and very attentive. The manager who I assumed was the owner spoke briefly to my dad in Greek but was certainly not warm and fuzzy or even that friendly like most of the Greek owners are. Every single Greek place I've been to has brought over something complimentary when they see fellow Greeks. Obviously not giving them less stars for that but still LOL On to the food...everything could be described as EH. Not terrible but certainly not that great. Things needed more seasoning and flavor. Even as basic as the traditional Greek salad lacked the olive oil and salt or vinegar. It was like we were eating plain old tomatoes and cucumbers with nothing on it. The other complaint as far as food...you do not get enough for what you pay for! The only thing we were really happy with was the gyro sandwich with fries. We tried a bit of everything. A few gyros, fried calamari (not fresh at all. Definitely frozen and TINY), bakalao, mixed grill, Greek salad, octopus, dandelions, lamb in phyllo. All just okay tasting and certainly portions too small to eat the traditional Greek way where everyone shares. Dessert was good. Got the Greek yogurt and a few of the ekmeks. All in all the ambiance for a Greek place was lacking. Not warm and inviting and doesn't remind you of anything you would see in Greece. The food is pretty blah, under seasoned with portions way too small for what you pay. Oh and keep in mind...you will pay extra for anything extra you ask for. 50 cents for extra tzatziki when they didn't put enough on in the first place??? Come on. That's just ridiculous and shows what a cheap owner this is. And if he's not cheap, he's certainly not very friendly. Disappointed in my choice for this place for a special occasion and do not recommend as a place to celebrate. Would not come back. If you do want the greatest Greek restaurant I've ever eaten I would highly recommend Pithari taverna in New Brunswick. This is the restaurant I hold as my standard. read more

Came in for pickup and the man at the front desk accused me repeatedly that I did not give a tip on a meal during dine in. The food at Black Olive is so good! I always get the same thing - the lemon roasted chicken which comes with either soup or salad. The chicken is perfectly roasted with crisp skin and really juicy chicken. The meat falls off the bone. It really is the best roast chicken I've ever had. It comes with 2 small lemon potatoes and a green vegetable that has a nutmeg spice to it. Not sure what it was but it was delicious. The soup was a tomato bean soup that was okay but tasted like eating a bowlful of baked beans. My friend got the Lamb and Goat Salad - don't worry - it doesn't contain goat meat. The goat is goat cheese. The salad contains 3 charcoal grilled lamb chops, goat cheese, kalamata olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, artichokes and roasted peppers over a bed of fresh mixed greens with house dressing. My friend said it was absolutely delicious and left nothing on her plate. We shared dessert and it was 5 stars! I wish I had taken a photo. It was called Ekmek and was shredded phylo dough, covered with a lemon syrup, and then topped with custard and whippped cream. OMG! To die for. Prices are okay - not cheap but not exorbitant. The cost for the salad ($17), the chicken ($16), 2 iced teas, 1 coffee, and 1 dessert ($6) was $49 including tax. With tip, the total was $60.00. Plenty of seating and lots of parking. Service was excellent. We were greeted as soon as we walked in the door (and only came in because we had no idea that Coriander, the Indian restaurant, was closed on Tuesdays). Greek food is well known for using FRESH, seasonal ingredients that pop on the plate. Everything we ordered here tasted like it came out of a can or a freezer bag. Menu items that should have been straightforward (greek salad, grilled calamari) were disappointing and poorly executed. We tried 5 dishes and the flavors were fantastic. We shared the saganaki and it arrived at our table bubbling and full of aroma. I ordered lamb chops as an appetizer that were so good I was sucking the juice off of the bone. My wife had the Greek salad for an entree. The chicken was cooked to perfection and the feta cheese was among the best I've tasted. For my meal I had two more appetizers in pork souvlaki and the grilled calamari. There aren't many places around me to get a decent Gyro, so when I came across "Black Olive" I decided to give them a go. Suffice it to say, I was not disappointed. When you order the Gyro, you are given the option of either the platter or the sandwich and then a choice of Chicken, Pork Souvlaki, or Gyro meat. (I believe this is a combination of both beef and lamb) I opted for the Sandwich with Gyro meat which comes with a side of Greek Fries. I also ordered a Greek coffee to go with my meal. First things first, the fries. These are not just fried potatoes that are then given the moniker "Greek" simply because they're in a Greek restaurant. These are indeed unique. They are seasoned with what I determined to be garlic, parsley, oregano and a touch of lemon. This really gives them a nice bright flavor that you wouldn't get from a regular fry. But now for what I came for, the gyro. I'm very happy to report that this was indeed very good. A generous amount of meat sits atop lettuce, red onion, and tomato and is accompanied by that oh so wonderful Greek condiment Tzatziki sauce. The meat was tender but not overcooked and had a very enjoyable while not overpowering flavor. Even better was the fact that I was not left with a pool of grease at the bottom of the foil wrapper when I was done. That's right. this had the perfect amount of Greece without the Grease! And I can't forget the Greek Coffee. While this may look like an espresso, it should not be treated as such. Sip it slow and enjoy it throughout your meal. And please don't be alarmed at the thick sediment at the bottom of the cup as this is normal for this style of coffee. A wonderful accompaniment to my lunch. All in all, the Black Olive was a wonderful find. Good food, friendly service and not to expensive. My whole meal came to about $14. My husband and I had lunch here today and we could not have had a better experience. Our waiter, Josh, seated us immediately and quickly took our order. The first things we noticed were the blue and white fabric napkins, heavy tableware, and clean white plates. Bread, olives and olive oil were placed on the table. My entree was lamb and goat, which were three medium-cooked lamb chops, goat cheese and large salad. It was delicious. My husband had shrimp with potatoes in a butter anise sauce. He said it was quite good. I had Greek coffee to finish with a huge slab of baklava, which was baked exactly as it should be. At the beginning we told our waiter we only had an hour to eat before the movies, and he said no problem and had us out in 45 minutes. There was nothing that made me feel the need to return to this restaurant. There was a large party while we were there and they clearly made this their priority. Other tables were made to wait for drinks ordering etc. the owner did seem incredibly unwelcoming and miserable. Our server must have been the individual having difficulty wearing his mask. Each time he came to our table it was down. The decor was very tired and showed no sign of being a Greek restaurant , but rather a place for them to run their business without putting much effort into decor. The food was simply ok... we ordered a variety of appetizers and 2 entree.. none of them stood out. -'but were edible - well except the Spanish and rice. It had a nasty taste and when asking our server he simply said I have no clue what's in it. I mean nothing like knowing your menu!! I wish there were negative stars because this place doesn't even deserve 1 star. It was a little before 9:30pm when we decided to try this place out after the movie we just saw. I noticed the OPEN sign wasn't lit up, but YELP said it was open until 10. The BF knew I had this place bookmarked and have been wanting to try it so we decided to try it. There were others dining as well. Upon entering, we stood at the counter waiting to be seated and when the owner/host noticed us, he seemed annoyed that we were there interrupting his banter with his friends that were there. He took his time to come to us and sat us at the only unmade table in restaurant which was dirty. The waiter, who was polite and courteous - brought us some bread w dipping oil and olives. We ordered promptly. I ordered the baked feta. And my BF ordered the scrod. Idk the menu names for these items. Both came w salads so I got the Greek salad and he got the house salad. The waiter didn't even ask if we wanted drinks. Our salads came out relatively fast. That's when I asked for waters as we still didn't have anything to drink. My BF took one bite of his salad and chomped down on a gross long blonde hair. It was disgusting watching him pull the hair from his mouth and off of his fork. I called the waiter over who apologized and took his plate. After disappearing for several min the waiter returned with what appeared to be the same salad on the same plate with the hair removed. I almost couldn't bring myself to eat mine. I thoroughly inspected mine before taking any bites. Our food came out and you could totally tell it was microwaved. The scrod was super hot and tasted like leftovers. The potatoes were not. I didn't particularly enjoy the spinach/rice side that came with it. Reminded me of stuffed grape leaves. My baked feta was basically a $12 warmed up cheese Danish. Also super hot on the inside however hardened as it cooled much like microwaved breads. This whole time the owner stood by his friends and took pics and bantered and never once came over to apologize or offer anything for the hair we found. We couldn't finish our meals and asked for the check. BF asked the waiter if he told the owner about the hair, he said yes. At that point we watched him take our food in the back to get wrapped and tell the owner that we asked if he knew about the hair. And what do ya know? The owner walks over to us and says "oh I heard you found a hair about this long and we don't have anyone back there w hair that long, wish mine was but it isn't ..Ha. Ha. Ha". Trying to make a joke about it. We weren't laughing bc it sounded like he was accusing us of lying about it or staging it. Neither of us have long blonde hair to do that. Which my BF replied with and told him how appalled we were to not have heard an apology from him sooner and not even owning up to it. Mistakes happen I get it but to back peddle and play the blame game isn't how you should be conducting business. I am so surprised this place has 4 stars. Will NEVER return and encourage anyone considering going to choose one of the other eateries in the plaza. read more

Nice to have another Greek, Mediterranean restaurant that has very reasonable prices in the area. Wasn't overly thrilled with there Hummus, it was thinner, "runnier" than any I've ever had or made and taste was lacking. However, the grilled calamari was delicious.. Every restaurant serves fried calamari, grilled is a treat. My entree of 2 thick expertly buthchered pork chops were delicious and my wife's lamb shank was huge and also extremely tasty. This restaurant goes to the top of my list of recommendations! It is not much on décor but the food is outstanding. I tried the Moussaka, which was something that I have never tried before. It was delicious. My wife had the chicken souvlaki which was tender and tasty. The hummus appetizer was homemade with fresh hip pita bread. We went on a Saturday night and the restaurant was packed, which shows that good food will bring people in every time. Black Olive has only been open since November of 2013 but the word is spreading fast. This is a gem and is well worth the trip. read more

As an Atco resident I was very excited to see some ethnic diversity driving up to this restaurant on our night out. Overall, it was very good. Our server was very friendly and attentive. We sat down almost immediately, which rarely happens in Voorhees. I also liked that we weren't overwhelmed by greek culture walking in, as I've experienced in other greek restaurants. The problem is that while the restaurant's appearance is nice and the dishes appearance are very beautiful, there seemed to consistently be an element that fell short of a 5 star meal. For instance, we ordered a grilled appetizer platter that came with a bed of fries. Rather than serve a small dish of ketchup or some tweaked fry sauce; a large bottle of Heinz ketchup was placed on the table. It instantaneously made my grill platter feel like a cheeseburger platter. It was a little under seasoned too. I expected some herb and olive oil infused dish, but it was a little less than I had hoped. Ironically, the fries were delicious. The red pepper and goat cheese appetizer was on point. I came here for dinner on a Friday evening with about ten very lively people from my rowing team. The place is BYOB, so we came prepared with plenty of libations expecting to have a delicious dinner. We certainly weren't let down! Black Olive is located in a nondescript little strip of shops, but upon walking in I immediately appreciated the deceptively roomy nature of the restaurant. I think the large windows that let in the setting sunlight and high ceilings had a lot to do with that. Our server was adorable and very prompt, opening wine and putting in orders for appetizers for all of us very quickly. He attended personally to each member of the table, moving down the line to take orders rather than forcing us to shout at him as he stood at one end of the table. (I hate when servers only stand at one end of the table or ask you a question right as you are clearly putting a bite of food into your mouth. Rant over.) He was a helpful but not intrusive presence the entire evening, and he skillfully split all of our checks individually at the end of the night without us asking before the meal began. He even made a point to say how much he'd enjoyed our table...it was very sweet. The dinner itself was nearly as incredible as the service. We began with several hummus-type dips and octopus accompanied by pita bread. Everything was flavorful and not too heavy...perfect for appetizers. I ordered half of a lemon roasted chicken with stewed green beans and potatoes as an entrée. The chicken was moist and the lemon flavor was evident throughout. I also really liked the green beans. The potatoes were more of a miss, since they lacked structure and much flavor. Everything else was so great in this case that I easily overlooked it though. The rest of the group seemed to love their meals as well. There were plenty of leftovers, but only since the portions were so large. Nobody wanted to leave anything behind! Stylistically the food seemed like higher end American Greek cuisine, rather than the dinners I ate in various regions of Greece when I was there. Everything in Greece proper seemed simpler somehow. It's not at bad thing whatsoever, just something to note if you've ever traveled extensively in Greece and come here expecting an experience exactly like that. I don't have a bad thing to say about my experience here! I recently visited with my parents and husband for dinner and didn't know what to expect as I had never heard of it. I'm so glad we came because I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes greek food. It's BYO so bring your bottle of wine and your appetite! We started the meal off with the grilled octopus appetizer and one of the special appetizers which was a mixed greek plate that included haloumi cheese, fries, and a mixture of different meats. The grilled octopus was incredible! Soo tender and flavorful, definitely a must order. The mixed plate was also really good-- all the various meats were cooked perfectly. For our entrees, I split the plaki and the shrimp tourkolimano. The plaki is their daily fish in a tomato onion sauce. The fish was scrod and it was tender and flaky and so flavorful in the sauce! It came with potatoes and spinach which were also really good. The shrimp were so yummy--the sauce was white wine, feta, olives, and tomatoes! We scarfed it down but were so full that we took some home. It tasted just as delicious the next day. I wanted dessert but was way too full so will have to get it next time! I really wanted to love this place, cause I LOVE Greek food, and it is so close. I ordered take out, cause I am on the run so I can't comment on service. So onto the food! I ordered Taramosalata, cause it is my most favorite Greek food ever. Let's just say I was completely underwhlemed. It tasted like feta, there were NO indications that there was any roe at all in it, except for the color, but even that was a bit to orange, instead of the normal pinkish color. It was kinda chunky and really unappetizing. I was super disappointed. I also ordered the Spanikopita that came with a Greek salad. The salad was ok, it had nice sized prices of feta, but even as a side salad I usually see a stuffed grape leaf, and there was none. The dressing was nothing special. The Spanikopita itself was nice and flaky, and had a nice ratio of spinach to feta, but it didn't wow me, but it was decent. Edit: Apparently they gave me the wrong appetizer, and the owner contacted me and apologized to me, I will be going back to try what I actually ordered, and then I will update my review. read more

The food at the Black Olive Restaurant is one of the best Greek cuisines that I have experienced in the South Jersey area. The portions are large and the food is very tasty and resembles homemade cooking. We started with a group of appetizers such as tirokafteri, a mildly spicy feta cheese spread, octopus which was perfectly seasoned and very tender, and other tasty goodies. They serve plenty of homemade bread with olive oil and olives. Since the appetizers were very filling, I decided to order the appetizer size Chicken Souvlaki, thinking that it would be a small portion. I was totally wrong. The server brought me two large skewers of very tender and perfectly seasoned chicken. I ate one and took the other skewer home for next day lunch. My husband ordered the Shrimp tourkolimano. He enjoyed his meal but it was a little creamier than what I would like. Our friends ordered the lamb dish. They praised the meal with each bite that they took. After seeing the Hundred Foot Journey, we were ready for some good food. Six of us ordered different apps and a few entrees and shared everything. We especially liked the grilled octopus (ordered it twice), the saganaki (pan fried cheese, an intense flavor), the moussaka, the beef and lamb gyro platter. The taramosalata (smoked cod roe with potatoes) could have been a bit more flavorful, as the spicy feta spread(not spicy enough). Seems that they made it mild to appeal to most people. Stopped here for lunch on Mothers Day after being able to find seating via the Open Table app. I've been eying up this place for some time now, desperately trying to find time in my schedule to go. No lunch menu was offered, presumably because of the holiday. There were plenty of options on the dinner and specials menu to choose from. The decor is simple and clean. The tables seemed oddly small and the wicker-type seats rather narrow. As a fat foodie, I thankful to be seated on the upholstered bench rather than teeter atop one of these little chairs. I'd venture that the hardwood floors and industrial ceiling lends itself to quite a bit of noise should the place get busy. Greek music was playing in the background and was enjoyable enough for a little girl to jump from her table and start dancing with her Greek grandmother clapping along with her. This is a place you could easy entertain at, be it a lunch with clients or the girls, or even a date before or after a movie next door. There is seating outside and they have patio umbrellas at the ready to put up for diners. Smart management recognized the temperature was getting stuffy inside and shut the doors to maximize the AC efficiency. Shockingly, I wasn't very warmly greeted. While I don't expect fanfare, a smile and hello or good afternoon could go a long way. A middle-aged man seated me and shuffled off, returning a few minutes later with bread and olive oil. He wasn't mean or anything, just never seemed to smile or greet anyone else so I guess it wasn't "just me". Several tables of 4+ customers celebrating the day were seated after me, and with two wait staff, the girls seemed to keep up pretty well -- except for their attention to beverages. In addition to myself, I saw several other tables have to ask for refills. Another fellow who appeared to be a chef/owner type was enthusiastically chatting with and hand-delivering food to another table that appeared to be his friends. Slightly off-putting; when he walked past my table and others, he didn't even say hello. The eggplant salad was delicious and well spiced, served with warm pita corners. The cucumber slices plated with it were sad and dry looking, as though they'd been cut the day prior. Other appetizer platters came to a few other tables that had the eggplant plus hummus and other salads. It all looked incredible. Ordered a special entree that came with soup or salad. I chose the soup -- salmon chowder. On looks alone it wasn't very attractive but it was delicious and full of fish. The bowl was almost too much for one person to eat. My stuffed cabbage came out plated with gigantes (Greek Lima beans) and potatoes. The meat and rice proportions was good and the seasoning delicious, though I wasn't entirely thrilled with the avgolemono sauce in part because it was too heavy along with all the starches served with the dish. I then regretted not getting a lighter entree such as a poached or grilled fish. Portions were generous and I found myself unable to finish everything that was served. Good meal all in all, but tweaks could easily make this place 5 star worthy. I didn't find myself reaching for Windex to cure my ills, so I guess that's a good thing!!! PS. There's nothing outstanding about this place. The spanakopita was bland and almost soggy. The shrimp appetizer was overcooked, with she'll on, so that it had to be scraped out of the shell. Chicken Corfu entree and shrimp entree were drenched in sauce, to the point of masking the flavor. And the service was cold. We had to ask for a wine bucket, for fresh pepper, and she made it clear it was an inconvenience to her. read more

Stopped in after a Sunday night movie, the place was buzzing, it has a nice vibe, modern with a casual comfort. Most importantly each dish we ordered was delicious, the calamari appetizer, moussaka and the lamb. The portions were not lacking. All in all a nice welcome to these parts of New Jersey. Unfortunately I was pretty disappointed with this restaurant. There were 5 of us, we ordered the chicken souvlaki which was truly enjoyed, the lamb steak which was also truly enjoyed, the placki was disappointing because the sauce overpowered the flavor of the fish, the chicken Corfu was good and the chicken mavrodaphne was ok; the sauce was good but the chicken was not. All of the vegetables were canned rather than fresh. The service was not great because we waited a long time for our order to be taken and the waiter was not familiar with the items in the menu since he was not able to explain what certain dishes were. The owner was not very friendly either. For the price, I had higher expectations. I would not return. read more

Was going to the movies tonight and came up one the Black Olive. My wife and I really enjoyed the quality of service and the food was very good too. Prices were affordable. We will be back. read more

Started with the grilled octopus & it was very good. My husband & I both ordered the gyro platter (comes with Greek fries & house salad) I was given the sandwich only & fries. Not sure if the waitress misheard me or if the kitchen screwed up. My husband didn't get the tzatziki that was supposed to come with his. We asked for a side of it & the waitress brought it over, no problem. The food was very good & I ate most of my husbands salad which I thought was really tasty. My daughter got chicken fingers & fries from the kids menu which she seemed happy with. It was overall a good meal. I would like to go back again. read more

Just had dinner here with my wife. I was looking forward to this restaurant since I enjoy Greek cuisine and have had some wonderful experiences in other places. Sadly, I wasn't very impressed. Decent smaller crowd size and dining facility was fair. Dinner began with not Pita or Flat bread, but what looked like store purchased french-bread and oil, for me that kind of ruins the following dining experience. In my opinion, the menu was was not very impressive selection wise. The dinner entrees were okay, but at this point I could have just eaten Italian food and not cared about the difference. Decided to have the desert portion elsewhere, so I can't comment on their deserts. I'll just chalk tonight's dining experience to my motto of "live and learn and never return". read more
