Black Olive Greek Cuisine restaurant was a pleasant surprise. Excellent food. I didn't know that it was a byob. Next time I'll stop at the liquor store prior to my visit. It's family run and everyone was very nice. On the Friday in Lent that my wife and I dined there we had an excellent fish dinner- soup or salad included for $20. Disappointing. My chicken dish with wine sauce was pretty good, although a bit salty. My husbands pastitsio was bland and quite dry. Our friends mixed seafood dish had all the shells on the shrimp, which was very difficult for him to eat with a fork and knife. The octopus was quite rubbery. For dessert my husband had the cheesecake, which he says was generic. The yogurt and honey dessert was, well, yogurt and honey. Nothing special. The atmosphere and service at Black Olive was great. Our waiter was very attentive and the space feels much bigger than it is thanks to some cool modern design choices. The acoustics aren't the greatest, but really, have you ever been in a quiet Greek restaurant? Moving onto the most important part, the food, I would sum up my first meal here as not bad. It was not the best Greek food I've ever eaten, but it was not terrible by any means. I love Greek food. So as far as the staples go, I know how they should taste. I know every restaurant puts their own spin on things but I felt like most of the food here was bland. It seemed as though the chef was trying to conserve his limited supply of spices. We started out with the saganaki which was delicious. It was not flambéed tableside with ouzo as I've enjoyed in some other restaurants, but I certainly can't hold that against them. The spanakopita was good, but instead of being layered as it usually is prepared, it was more of a roll where all of the filling was wrapped with layers of phyllo. The phyllo was nice and crispy, but the filling lacked the depth of flavor that you'd expect. The house salad was unique and very tasty. The whole salad was finely shredded which I've not seen before. I ordered the pastitsio, my favorite Greek entrée. The dish was bland and a bit dry. The béchamel formed a solid cap on top of the pasta. For dessert, we had baklava and ekmek kataifi. While not bad, they too were generally lacking in flavor. I'd like to think it was just someone in the kitchen being stingy with herbs and spices the night I was there and maybe it would be better next time. This is certainly not a restaurant that I'd refuse to try again, but reading similar comments in other reviews makes me think our meal might be the norm. read more

Aaaaamazing! Found this spot a few minutes from our hotel. Fresh smells from the minute you walk in. Refreshing ice tea. Waiter on point. Octopus finely spiced and grilled to perfection! Warm bread and olives on the table. The lamb chunks wrapped in phyllo dough served with this spinach risotto medley and marinated potatoes were heavenly. Every bite cooked to perfection. Probably the highest compliment I can pay Black Olive is that my dad, who grew up in Greece and was in the food business for over 40 years, deemed it his favorite Greek restaurant in New Jersey (and he's been to plenty). My wife and I came here with him for a late lunch this past Sunday. My wife and I split the octopus appetizer. It was perfect. Tender, slightly charred, and with a nice light coating of oil. My wife had the shrimp tourkolimano ("Jumbo shrimp sauteed in white wine with fresh tomatoes, garlic, feta cheese and kalamata olives and a touch of ouzo"), which was also delicious. The melted feta added a nice creamy texture and the ouzo finish added a really interesting (and welcome) flavor dynamic. I had the "lamb and goat" salad (lamb chops and goat cheese). I liked the idea of lamb on a salad and thought it was clever to combine it with goat cheese. The salad itself was also enjoyable. The lamb was nicely cooked (albeit slightly gamey). I just wish they were a little more generous with it (three small chops). The vegetables in the salad were fresh and flavorful and the house vinaigrette tied it all together. Dad had avgolemeno soup and chicken kebob. I didn't taste any of it, but he cleaned his plate and seemed to enjoy it. For dessert, we all had Greek coffee, which was well made, and Dad got the ekmek kataifi (shredded wheat in a sweet syrup, topped with custard, whipped cream, and nuts). I had a bite and it was delicious. The shredded wheat was nicely saturated with syrup, and the custard and cream were fresh and light. Interior is nice, bright, and open (with simple, rustic Greek style decor). Service was also very good. Prices were also pretty reasonable. One note, it is BYO, so don't forget to pick up a bottle on your way. South Jersey is kind of a desert for Greek food (Kuzina by Sofia and Estia are welcome additions, but the quality is just not there for either of them), so it's good to know there is at least one place where you can get an excellent Greek meal. read more

After leaving the establishment the manager followed me out of the store asking me why I haven't left a tip. My waitress gave me terrible service which I explained. He then tried to make excuses. I noticed that all of the other patrons in the restaurant recieved better more attentive service than I had. Maybe it was because of my color. I was the only person of color there. The manager didn't offer to make anything right or even apologize for the service I recieved. I felt attacked at that point and I just wanted to leave. We had an excellent experience at the Black Olive which is BYOB Mediterranean restaurant in Voorhees. We made a 645 reservation and we were seated promptly. We started with a grilled pepper salad that was mixed greens with a grilled red pepper served hot with melted goat cheese inside yum.Delicious and enough to share. We also had the salmon bisque soup that was served with creamy broth and plenty of salmon. The main entrees we sampled were the Chicken Corfu and the seafood platter. Both perfectly cooked with. This place is fairly new, at least for me it is. My girl and I were looking for something different and ran across this establishment. Upon entering we were warmly greeted and promptly seated. It was pretty busy and there was no wait. Our server Came over within mins of us being seated and brought us the most AMAZING warm soft bread with olive oil and olives for dipping. The rest of the meal was DELICIOUS and SEAMLESS!! The server was attentive and never left us needing or wanting anything. The food is mediocre at best. My wife and I have dined here a few times, and each time we've observed the management in this place act disrespectful to people of color. What's with South Jersey and racism? We dined here on more than one occasion because we thought maybe we were making too much of a big deal about little nuances with the way management behaves towards non-white customers but each time it's a recurrent theme when you observe how they treat white vs non-white customers. If you're going to dine here then I urge you to make this observation, it's comedic/sad. Tonight was my last night that I'll come here, okay food but pretty disgusting demeanor of owners. Had to do take out for myself and friends in the hospital. My first impression walking into this establishment was great. I was greated promptly and courtestly. My food was ready on time. Standing there I thought this place is a must come-back to eat in as the served meals looked great. As for the food, it was great. Started with a greek salad which was plentiful and enough for three and priced fine for the quality/quantity. The second course was great also which was the meat plate and included well done fries. Again for price qual/quan was excellent. The final course was the lamb chops which were well prepared, cooked to the correct requested temp, and seasoned perfectly. This place is a must try. Prices again are fine for price/quantity, prepared perfectly and a great experience. I will review again when I eat in, and quite honestly, cant wait. This place is a BYOB which is also great as you don't have to pay for over priced cocktails/wine. Based on this meal, I would give it closer to 4.5 stars. read more

Been here for lunch once and dinner twice. For lunch my boyfriend and I ordered the chicken souvlaki, I got the platter and he got the sandwich. They both came with a side salad and Greek seasoned fries which were so much better than other Greek fries I have had in the past! Overall it was a great first experience. The past 2 visits were for dinner with my family. Both times we ordered the hummus and grilled octopus(amazing) to start and for my entree I ordered the charcoal grilled pork chops. I'm not one to order pork but it's outstanding and is a huge portion enough for 2 meals! It came with a salad or soup plus baked green beans and roasted potatoes with the entree. My husband and I came here after bemoaning the fact that our favorite Greek restaurant had closed to some people at a festival at St. Thomas' Greek Orthodox Church. They recommended we try Black Olive. Our server, Miguel, brought us water and wine glasses (Black Olive is a BYOB - always a plus for the budget) within a couple of minutes of sitting down, and after he had acknowledged us within less than a minute of being seated. He was very upbeat, knowledgeable and most pleasant. Well, I started with the spanakopita, which has the most luscious, crispy phyllo surrounding the excellent spinach/feta filling (it is HUGE). My husband had the Octopus, which was beautifully grilled, and he said it was among the best he has ever had - he has had octopus around the world, due to his profession. We also ordered the Greek fries, as I had heard they were excellent. The seasoning on them was great, but I would have liked them a little more heavily seasoned, since it was SO good. In addition, the texture of the fries rocked!! For our entrees, I had the Giouvetsi, (lamb shank), which was braised to perfection. I thoroughly enjoyed it, both at the restaurant and at home, since there was so much, I could never have finished it, especially after eating half of the huge spanakopita. My Husband had the Plaki fish entree, which he loved, and also could not finish it. Both heated up nicely at home. I have read some of the reviews, and it sounds like some of them are either from picky people (minor issues), or people who just plain do not like Mediterranean food (suggest they go to McDonald's if they don't like flavor). The restaurant is in a strip mall; however, the interior is very modern, and interesting - they also have al fresco dining (however, it looks out on the parking lot). The day we went, it was too hot to sit outside. This place is a real keeper for Mediterranean dishes!!! We live in Moorestown, so it is a little bit of a trek for us - well worth it! Update: I stated that Norma's was out of business, but it is now open again. I just want to be fair. Black Olive is under new management. The food was very good. Greek food is defined by fresh ingredients and, as in the past, Black Olive doesn't disappoint. The restaurant has been enlarged and has an updated interior. The menu has been updated with the associated inflation-driven price increases. The complementary soup or salad with entrees is gone and much missed. But, we ordered a similar salad ala carte and split it. Same taste with upgraded ingredient qualities. The chicken souvlaki platter came out piping hot and perfectly grilled but the small amount of house salad that used to come on the plate has been replaced with sliced red onion and sliced tomato. Pitas cut in half are easier to wrap around the chicken pieces than the quarters that were served. The bifteki was delicious if a bit over cooked. If you knew the old Black Olive and loved it, it's worth trying the new Black Olive, but come with an open mind to the changes the new owners have made. read more

Did I tell you I love this place? Well, if I didn't, I should have! Every time I visit NJ I have to stop here. I stick with appetizers because I love to have lots of flavors so small plates work for me. Yeh, I get bored easily. I can not get enough of the Taramosalata. A perfect combination of smoked cod roe and potatoes. It is served with grilled pita, which I can really never get enough of so I have to order an extra serving of the bread. Sure, there is an extra charge but well worth it! Then I move on to Octopus. It is marinated and grilled, cut into small pieces and served with a bit of bell peppers, parsley, olive oil and seasonings. Delish! I use the bread they served the table when I arrive to soak up all the oil so the plate is clean when it goes back to the kitchen. Another all time favorite is the Grilled Calamari. This is consistently the best calamari I have ever eaten and believe me, I have eaten plenty! It is always tender and juicy. Just grilled and never too much cooking, which would leave it tough and dried out. The owner is attentive and visits with guests.
