Airport Pulga is a Mexican outdoor flea market which happens every Saturday and Sunday. I came upon…read moreit on a Friday, December 23 - it was presumably open this extra day for Navidad shopping. But at mid-afternoon, there were only a handful of vendors - most probably were taking care of their own shopping instead of setting up shop. It felt like a weird trip. If this market is ever fully occupied, it would be quite bustling and full of local flavor. Even on my aberrant visit, I saw a lot of live sheep and goat for sale. If you've ever wanted to buy a live goat, this place might be worth checking out. They've got Boer (meat) and Nubian (dairy) goats. Adults weighing about 175 pounds were quoted to me for $200, while a kid of about 60 pounds went for $100. One of the sellers offered to butcher anything I bought for $25 - his English was limited, so I'm not sure what services would be included. There were also some chickens and other birds. A boot vendor, a fruit guy, and the usual crap vendors. Too bad the food trailers were not in operation. No admission fee and free parking, so it might be worth a visit if you're in the hood. Booth rentals seem to be around $20 for 1 day and $30 for the weekend.

It appears that many vendors have yet to reopen but I found that the ones who were open pretty much…read moreall sold the same things. When you think of a flea market you expect somewhat lower prices compared to retail but this is not the case at La Pulga. They are trying to charge retail prices. I get these are tough times but at the end of the day wouldn't you rather make a few sales instead of none ?!

What a cool 'hidden find' in the Leander area!…read more It's a bit of a misnomer to call this a 'flea market', but that's a minor point to quibble over. Rather, this is a collection of rather eclectic shops selling mostly used or refurbished items. These range from vintage glass and antique furniture all the way to collectible baseball cards. Everyone I spoke to at one of the stores was friendly and sometimes willing to negotiate a price on an item. I look askance at some of the reviews which claim 'I didn't get a deal'. You have access to the internet, after all. Even on your smart phone. You should be able to find out if the vintage item you're looking for hasn't been cheaply reproduced at Hobby Lobby, Cost Plus or Michael's. The facility still seems to be in development, so a couple notes for folks who may visit close to when I did, in September 2017. 1) The parking lot is a very rough gravel one. Drive slowly and walk carefully, there are ankle-turning rocks here if you wear heels. 2) One of the vendors was having serious issues taking credit cards, so having cash on hand might be a good idea. 3) If you check in on Yelp, there's a free drink offer available at the food trailer. However, there's no food trailer yet - just a well-run inside snack bar. They were kind enough to honor the offer for me, but do them a favor and wait until they get a vendor in before trying to use the coupon. In sum, a definite place to visit if the antique hunting bug strikes!

Makes a nice trip especially if you're looking for the refurbished stuff! I'm a vintage toy collector myself so most of the pictures I took reflect that.

You read letters for book request, curate a small package of books found in IBPs library and write a letter to send back to each person. This is a really awesome way to provide support to all kinds of humans, who've been through all kinds of challenges. The 30 minute volunteer orientation was thorough and informative! They have volunteer time slots on Sundays and Thursday starting at 6pm! I hope you consider volunteering! I'll definitely be back to volunteer again.

IBP is located in East Austin, housed inside of a church (although IBP is NOT a religiously affiliated organization). They have a huge library built on donations from the community. Every Thursday and Sunday evening, volunteers come to read letters from people incarcerated all over Texas, match them with books, and write handwritten letters back to them. It's truly such a wonderful initiative. People who are incarcerated have the opportunity to request books every 2-3 months and get books sent to them completely free of charge. IBP received around 1500 letters requesting books per month, which is so incredible. If you are someone who enjoys volunteering, this is the place for you! If you don't have the time to volunteer, consider donating to IBP!
