I think this turns into a waterfall when there's a lot of rain

It's a very beautiful park with lots of walking paths, shelter houses, pretty good bathroom facilities, a very long frisbee golf course, a 5 mile marathon course, play areas for children, and beautiful scenery. There are also kayaks and bicycles you can rent and spots to stop and fish or picnic. One path I took was lined with redbud trees in full bloom. The lake is really big and you can walk all the way around it, to the dam and back.

A hidden gem of Western Johnson County! Several miles of paved walking trails encircle Lake Lenexa, with some off-trail options as well for you hiking and biking enthusiasts. Easy to get to, plenty of spaces for all ages, and one of the neater architectural designs of a spillway/dam in the local area. If you are coming from the north/off of 83rd, then the Oak Shelter can be found after the third roundabout. Great covered space next to an updated playground area with super views of the lake. Your next entry point provides a boat ramp/water entry and there are no motorized watercraft allowed. Yay! for wake-free water recreation!

This is one heck of a park. It's got a little bit of everything: * A giant pond. Canoes, kayaks and other human powered boats are allowed. Signs say it doesn't allow any motors and I didn't see any. You can fish too! * A nice, long walking trail. It measures about two miles long and features a little off shoot under the bridge on the west side of the park. It mainly surrounds the park's pond, but also guides you through a nice little wooded area. Walkers and bikers will share space. Motorized rides are not allowed. * Picnic and play areas. Do you want to bring the kids out for a nice lunch and let them burn off some energy? There are a couple of spots with picnic tables, climbing stations, slides, etc... I didn't see any grills, so please don't bring anything you need to cook. Otherwise, it's a great place to be when the weather is right. * Wildlife. The park is on the edge of town, but it's still, probably, in the city. Nonetheless, if you're watching, you'll see nature poking through. I've seen cranes, hawks, deer, turtles and foxes. It isn't anything crazy, but it's a nice change of pace. * It's clean. The park is well maintained. Nothing looks too out of place or in disrepair. Bathrooms are available too. Like the rest of the park, they're kept in good condition.

Beautiful Dam Architecture

Beautiful park and Lake. Several trails for biking and hiking (paved & gravel). The trail around the lake is about 2.5miles and took me an hour to hike. A Great spot for kids and families, as they have 3 really nice playgrounds and shelters you can use for a nice picnic. My favorite part was the dam which was more of an art sculpture than dam. The architecture is beautiful and super unique, great photo spot!

Lake Lenexa at Black Hoof Park on a Fall Day

I loved everything about this park at Lake Lenexa, which features a boat ramp, two shelters, historical signs, an overlook, a two mile trail around the lake, a play area, restrooms, a dam, and plentiful parking. Excellent!

Such a cool damn and great trails around this place. Very peaceful place to get away.

Black Hoof is a lovely park and walking area. Whether you live in Kansas City or even Lawrence, I highly recommended driving out to Lenexa for some great walking and running trails. The trails and park itself are beautifully maintained and clean. There is a large dam with intricate architecture, and boardwalks over the wetland. I look forward to many more walks and further exploring Black Hoof!

Ask the Community - Black Hoof Park

Why can't you swim here?

There's no lifeguards, so I'm pretty sure any police would chase you out. Water isn't exceptionally clean and has a lot of algae and even a faint smell to it, so I wouldn't get in it

The walking trail took us to a bridge overlooking a water dam half way in and it is beautiful.

So, one…read moreSaturday after dance class we made the trek (and it is a bit more of a trek from OP than I was expecting!) out to Wilder Bluff Park, and I have to say, this is a pretty great spot to bring the kids. I got the feeling that it's still a bit of a hidden gem, probably because it's in a bit of an out of the way location, because there weren't a ton of cars, and while there were plenty of kids playing, it didn't feel crowded like other parks do on a nice Saturday morning in June. This park boasts a ton of great amenities for kids, and our kids really enjoyed the tree houses that they could climb through, which entertained them for about an hour. There is also a really cool splash playground adjacent to it, which had we known about in advance we may have brought some swim gear so the girls could really enjoy it. The park itself I think is much bigger than just the playground area, as I saw some trails nearby that might would have been fun to explore had we been there longer, or with kids that were eager to walk rather than climb and run! I'll close by adding that this park is new-ish and super well maintained. We used the restrooms and they are really clean for a park. Overall, this park is a gem for the folks that live right around it. I'm sure we'll return on another nice weekend morning when we want a change of pace.

Then my granddaughters played in the splash park which they thoroughly enjoyed! Afterwards, they tried out all the neat equipment and they especially liked the long rope bridge and sliding down the slide. The park also has a trail and is kept up well and a large parking lot. The bathrooms were clean and overall very nice park. The only thing is I wish there was a little bit more shaded seating for the parents to watch the children during the splash park play.

It's a park. If you are seeking five-star amenities, meh, then maybe you're overthinking it because…read moreit's a PARK. Within this park are modernized play equipment (read: rubber mulch, safer climbing areas, etc.), two sand volleyball pits, a walking trail that is about 1/3 mile per circuit, and a community garden. There are restroom facilities, there is gracious green space, and there is plenty of parking, so what's not to get all the stars? The hidden hook is the community garden. There is an amazing space divided into multiple plots with irrigation, protection from critters, and plenty of growing areas. Those who have gone through the process to obtain a plot are growing squash, tomatoes, herbs, cabbages, and more. Gardening is an attestation to the power of green space and our love for attending to all things earth. To do so as part of community-provided garden beds is even better as often times the output of community gardens are invested back into the neighborhoods at large. Electric Park is wonderful in any season and open year round. Make three laps around the paved circuit to book a mile or allow the littles to play on the updated equipment. Enjoy the space, the openness, and the amenities provided in southwest Lenexa.

There's literally a power station next to it. I know it's perfectly safe, but I swear I could hear the electricity just behind me. Johnson County has been working hard at turning its western edge into a wilderness oasis. Mill…read moreCreek Streamway Park is a striking example of how that hard work is paying off. This little slice of heaven will transport you away from the surrounding suburban sprawl and into an outdoor playground that provides an up close and personal look at what an undisturbed Kansas countryside would look like. I usually park on the east side of the park, around Mill Creek Parkway and Ridgeview, and walk the nearby trail. It's about a two-ish mile loop that you'll share with other walkers, joggers and some bikers. It takes you through a wooded stream area, then through swamp and finally through a field of native grasses. You also get to walk through a tunnel that will take you underneath a local railway. If you're lucky, you'll get to see some local wildlife. Pets are welcome, as long as they're well behaved and on a leash. If you're biking, the trail does extend both to the north and to the south. I haven't partaken either way, so I'm not much help, however I have heard that the northern trail will take you close to Shawnee Mission Park. You might want to double check this, but it sounds like like fun. Regardless, my biking friends say this is one of their favorite places to ride. I highly recommend for walkers and bikers of all ages, especially when the Kansas City weather is right.

I've taken my family there just to walk/hike around the paved trails which are seemingly endless with a dog and toddler. When I go on my own or with friends to bike, you'll find the end a lot faster, but it's still 17 miles or so of wonderful trail along the creek. On countless trips here, we've seen deer, heard coyotes, saw a sneaky copperhead snake, a beaver scurrying back to the water, owls and hawks, and the most memorable, an open field with more fireflies flickering than I've ever seen in my life. You'll also find big Kansas sunsets out here year round, along with more hills than one might expect. I'll say this, if you're a cyclist, it's enjoyable to fly around here but be aware this is primarily a walking/jogging path for everyone else so throw a little bell on, slow down a bit when approaching people and or call out as you come around. Most do, but some don't and it's kind of jarring especially when we're out with our almost-two-year-old toddling around. (Side note, I got a bike trailer for my daughter and this is the perfect, safe place to try it out.) In warmer months you'll find enough water and bathroom stations around, but as expected it can be difficult to find on those winter warm up days. Shoutout to the Parks & Rec team of years past, along with Gary Haller who shares the name of this popular trail for his dedication to making it a reality. I feel like nature is often forgotten and overlooked in our world, but a simple, beautiful trail like this has people eager to be out exploring their peaceful surroundings.
