Love the park updates and the recent fence addition! It's been a favorite for the space, play options and variety.

Sometimes good things come in small packages…read more R Park is small, about four square blocks, but it packs a lot into its space. It has a pavilion, tennis courts, basketball courts, a playground and lots of green space. It's a perfect place for a picnic, a family get together, to toss the frisbee, play pickup basketball and / or soccer and then some. I like the walking trail that circles the area. Three laps is about a mile. Parking is available. Bathroom facilities are, too.

R Park really surprised me…read more My kids and I met my cousin and her daughter here under the promise of a "very cool" bike path for kids we'd heard rumor of. We'd never been so it was a total unknown to all of us. When I looked it up I noticed that it's a true neighborhood park, which had me wondering if it would really live up to the hype as often neighborhood parks are on the smaller side of things, but holy cow for a small park this is really great and makes good use of space. The bike path which we came for was in fact very cool. It has two roundabouts and goes around the park in a sort of half circle loop. It's definitely for little kids and our kiddos played on it for almost two hours. It also has these sort of mini dmx hills for kids to play on with their bikes and scooters and that was honestly pretty cool to see and fun to watch the kids try out. Aside from the bike path it has two playgrounds, one for little kids that my 18month old loved, and one for big kids that our older kids enjoyed. It also has bathrooms and a shelter. I thought the restrooms could have been cleaner and set up a bit better. It was a very weird set up as it was two gender neutral restrooms with one toilet in each and one stall in each but no locks on the door. I really wish the city would implement locks - it's weird to me that you could be in the stall and have anyone just walk in and stand outside the stall while you're in there - if it was more than one it would feel much more normal, but again stalls are kind of odd in a gender neutral space. I'm all for gender neutral restrooms BTW, I just think these need some re-thinking.

Had to update an old review from during Covid times; this used to be my neighborhood park and…read moreman-oh-man is it everything a park should be. Just a fantastic, peaceful gathering space and I'm so glad the city had the foresight to build this park and not just add more rows of houses. I have many fond memories of moseying down here with my daughter when she was a baby through about age 4 -- perfect playground for that age. Also my buddy Scout, my dog of nine years and I have been here with wind chills of -20, and on summer days in the 100's. There are so many friendly people and we sort of band together with our pups on the coldest days. We found community here with an organic, casual dog meet up group.. I still miss it, my new neighborhood doesn't have the same energy. You'll find it packed on snow days with sledders dominating the perfect sledding hill. Those first real warm spring days give way to people playing baseball, throwing frisbees and cooking out. My only knocks are that there needs to be better crosswalks around here. Cars really fly through this area, unfortunately, and the city could take some better precautions. Additionally there's no bathroom. Funny how when I lived a five minute walk from here I didn't mind, but now when we visit and there's nowhere to go, it's definitely more noticeable. Anywho, it's a true gem for this dense neighborhood.

This is what neighborhood park should be like…read more It's a decent space... a couple of blocks wide by a couple of more blocks long. More than enough space for a small kids playground, a covered picnic area complete with an outdoor grill and a backstop and infield if you want to play softball... all surrounded by a nice little path for those who want a little exercise. You'll find all kinds of people out here. Some are exercising, some are playing with their kids and / or pets and others are just setting up camp and reading a book. It's a great place to kind of lean back, relax and let life come to you.

It has all of the above except for the toddler swings. Not an end-all for us because, honestly, my toddler mainly just collects rocks and sticks the whole time and has a blast doing so. This park feels very safe, which is the biggest pro! Definitely high on our list of parks.

The playground equipment is suitable for children of various ages, including a rock climbing wall, monkey bars, slides, a fireman's pole and other such features. For my preschool children, the monkey bars are too high to reach, but they are able to enjoy themselves with all of the other attractions. The especially love to climb on the twisted green curve structure, the likes of which I have never seen on another playground, and to go down the steep slides. The park feels very safe due to both its isolation and the regular comings and goings of police officers into the City Hall building and parked in the lot. (Anyone who has ever driven up and down 63rd Street in this neighborhood knows well that the Mission Hills police officers like to catch speeding motorists by hiding on Mission Drive and other such small residential roads) There are three benches surrounding the playground. Usually one or two of the is in the shade at any given hour. Although it is impossible to see the entire playground from any one of the benches, the area is such that one can sit and watch his or her children playing fairly well from these seats. There is also a picnic table located off of the parking lot, near the outbuilding. Perhaps the best feature of this park is the public restrooms located in a small outbuilding off of the parking lot. As those with potty trained young children know, the need for a child to relieve himself often comes suddenly and most urgently, so it is delightful to have a clean facility on site. It is one spacious stall (with plantation shutters on the inside window, no less--swanky!), and it is clean. It remains open during daytime hours. Rumors suggest that a brick walkway to it from the playground may be added in the future.

As a kid, we got a go-kart and this was the only place to legally (?) take that sucker out, so we had fun riding all around here causing mischief. Since then, it's always had a bit of an odd vibe.. maybe that's more specific to the neighborhood down the hill from it. There used to be this old house that was essentially boarded up and had monkey sculptures all around it. As if that wasn't enough, anyone who slowed down to look at it would have her come out and yell.. horror movie vibes. We also drove down that way one time but the bridge was out, and some drunk people playing in the streets shouted at us and threatened us if we didn't get out. So you can see where I'm not exactly feeling the area here. The park is what it is, a green space that isn't as well kept as other parks in the area, and has the dull white noise of cars whizzing by on I-35 in the background. It's fine for rec league softball and probably great for frisbee golf, but not a park I'd saddle up to with the family for a picnic.
