I agree with Christopher's raves - Black Butte is a great Hike. I did it dead in the summer so that's a different hiking experience.
Black Butte trail is mostly heavily forested for two-thirds the way up from then trailhead, then the trees lose interest and it's just you, the sun and the rocks. Carry water. The two-mile trail (one way) is moderate but unrelentingly climbs upward. There is no respite. The good news is that's all downhill coming back!
Great views of two of the Sisters, Broken Top and Washington. Looking the other way, you have Three Fingered Jack and Jefferson. Hood will be visible too and if the air isn't hazy, also Adams in Washington State.
The access road, once the snow clears, is drivable by any car. It's washboardy in sections but not too bad.
By the way, Black Butte looks a bit different from its neighbors with its conical, perfect shape. But make no mistake, BB is a Cascade stratovolcano like the rest and actually somewhat older than the Sisters and Jefferson. It's just that it sits in a bit of a rain shadow and doesn't get the subsequent erosion effects that the others do. So, one of the easier Cascade volcanoes to summit. read more
