This charming little French bakery is just off Market St on E High Street. We could only find…read moremetered parking on the street. Even the parking lot behind the building had meters. So that's a bit inconvenient; however, for quick pick up I suppose most could make a quick stop and run to the bakery and hurry back for the pickup. There are fresh pastries on the wheeled racks as well as chilled ones behind the glass display. We had some Cream Cheese Turnovers and we loved it. It's not too sweet and the flaky pastry and the creamy cheese really go together nicely. We also had the Caribbean Cake and Lemon Lavender Cake from the chilled selections. The flavor of the Caribbean Cake was too dominated by the cream of coconut (with shavings), overwhelming the mango passion compote, but was still very nice both in terms of texture and taste. The Lemon Lavender Cake, on the other hand, was just meh for us. The only thing we liked about it was the tanginess. Texture-wise it was neither fluffy (bottom layer portion being the cake layer) nor creamy (upper few layers), just curd overall. And we had to spit out the slice of lemon used as garnish. The Rhubarb Tart (w/ strawberry compote, almond cream, and mascarpone cream) was sold out on our visit, making us very curious. Hopefully we get to try that next time we're in town.

I can tell you how little they have changed in 43 years. Usually when a business has operated for that long, they've achieved well-known notoriety, yet these remain a bit of a secret. I argue they deserve all the accolades that local pride has conjured up for now defunct businesses like Bell Alley Soft Pretzels. I should've contacted Food Network a long time ago. If you swing by Reading Farmers Market be sure to grab the pretzel doughnuts. A one-of-a-kind, large, perfectly puffy, glazed doughnut, u guessed it, twisted like a knotted pretzel. I enjoy these simple yeasted doughnuts in their iced glory and have yet to come across one anywhere else. The decorated varieties at holidays are a solid choice as is the peanut butter frosted or filled. The thing that has passed is the affordability. Once upon a time you could pick to your hearts content, now they seem individually priced at a premium. Still, I'll pay for the quality & tradition that no super market with their synthesized ingredients can deliver.
