Went here after a long day of riding in Stratford. The service was terrible, 10 mins to even bring us drinks. we were starved and it took forever for appetizers to come out. I will say the appetizers were great. Bavarian style pretzel and mozzarella sticks were both very good. Then the main course finally came out. We all just got a large order of chicken tenders. I am really disappointed in the takeout we got this evening. I got the Bangkok Thai Wrap, my husband got the crispy chicken sandwich, and my son got the burger. We have eaten here prior to the sale of Black Bear. I am sorry to report the quality has significantly dropped. My husband said the chicken sandwich should be immediately taken off the menu. Seems as if the chicken was a store bought frozen chicken patty. I was unable to even pick up my wrap because it was completely falling apart and was not wrapped. The lettuce was mushy and overly saturated. We are locals and are looking to support local businesses however we cannot support this business unless the food significantly improves or prices are cut in half. read more

Black Bear was a mediocre experience, but I would come back because the good outweighed the bad. We arrived on a Saturday at 4:00 and got a table immediately, however it took them 10 minutes to walk over and bring us water which is an issue. The food was mostly really good. The Bavarian pretzel was huge and it came with beer cheese and honey mustard that was actually honey with mustard seed in it. The poutine is also very good. We shared a house salad and all vegetables were very fresh. We ordered two burgers - the whiskey burger which was fantastic and the maple burger. We ordered both burgers to be cooked medium, and while one of them was, the other burger was borderline raw. The burger screw up was a big screw up. We didn't say anything because we were tired but undercooked meat like that is no joke. Black Bear redeemed itself with their dessert. A big selection and we got carrot cake to go and it turned out to be very good. It's also relatively clean and once the waitress came over for the first time, she was great the rest of the night. read more

we stayed here and ate dinner here twice - it was pretty good! i really enjoyed the tavern and bar area themselves, it's a nice place for sure. our waitress the first night was awesome, super sweet and attentive. the second night, i couldn't say the same but it was okay. i ordered their special maple burger and found it to be just okay, nothing too special. their carrot cake was yummy as well as their version of a mudslide. the tips were incredible - very tender and seasoned very well. they ran out of mashed potatoes :( but the loaded baked potato was a delicious substitute and i really enjoyed the broccoli. overall, i would definitely recommend. read more

We have been coming here for years. The menu is a little eclectic, but the food is tasty, the servings are a good size and MOST of the service is top notch. This past weekend, we arrived to check in and have an adult beverage at the bar. The bar was full so we asked for a table. The "manager" who I later confirmed is Eric was incredibly rude and made it seem like he was bothered that we wanted to be seated. And he seemed further annoyed when I advised him we wanted to check in. IF he was the only face of Black Bear, I would never come back. With THAT being said, we will definitely be back because the service we receive from Michelle, Nina, Scooby, Tricia, Diane and every one else is fantastic. read more

What a great place for a bite after a hike!! We stopped in at Black Bear around 2:30pm and were seated in a lovely bar area. The waitress / bartender was super attentive and had plenty of recommendations / information about all of their homemade food (seriously - such good ingredients and no frozen food even in such a nice little town). I had the chicken Boursin wrap (chicken, boursin cheese, lettuce, avocado, tomatoes) with sweet potato fries, and it was delicious!! My boyfriend had the Bear club (turkey) which was also good. Such a nice setting and we were so glad it was open on a Monday between lunch and dinner. We wished we could have stayed til 4pm because they have Mexican Monday with enchiladas, but we were too hungry to wait that long. If we are back in northern NH, we will definitely dine here again! This is a generous three star review... They easily could deserve two stars. Yet, they are the busiest place in town, Mostly because every place is closed. We ordered takeout, simple, standard American restaurant cuisine: medium rare fillet and grilled salmon with baked potatoes and salads. Opening the bags when we got home was our first mistake, as they neglected to include salads at all. The steak was medium well to well... Except for a single bite of red in the center. I don't even know how you get a steak well done 3/4 of the way to the center... And then have a little bite of red in just that one place. The salmon was dry and overcooked, just like the steak. The baked potatoes were a strange grayish color inside. They were not marinated in anything, but they definitely did not look like they were cooked that day. THE DEAL: ColeBrook is a tiny town, in the north of New Hampshire, with limited dining options. Keep your expectations low and you won't be disappointed in the dinners. read more

I was here visiting family last week and while I will say the service provided by my server/bartender and the food was great, this restaurant needs to reevaluate who they hire as "manager". I watched this so called manager standing around at the host stand with the young lady that was there seating these servers back to back and then watched him literally have a tantrum at the bar next to me about having to help clear tables when they clearly did not have a busser and loaded with tables. I'm not sure what his name is, but after asking my server,and being told he was in fact a manager, his actions proved more to be an entitled jerk than a manager. I've never seen someone in that position act so arrogant and rude. Hopefully the owners are aware before he ruins anyone else's experience. This is apparently not the job for him! read more

Stayed in Colebrook a couple days and ate here twice. Food and service are good and it's the only real restaurant in town... as far as I could tell. Had some seafood and French onion soup one day... very good. Had some chili and a burger the next day, even better. We ordered the Maple gazed Salmon...the Salmon was cooked well and had a good maple flavor crust to it, the vegetables were over steamed and bland, the mashed potatoes were chunky with real potatoes but had a cream base that lacked flavor. My husband and I stopped here on our way home from Canada. We were surprised to find this place. The food was not worth the prices we paid. Our steaks we "a la cart" which meant any additional sides were extra. My filet was supposed to be medium well, which, per the menu, meant the center was pink. It was practically a charcoal briket. I was told by our server Cole, who BTW was an absolute sweetheart, that the mashed potatoes did not have skins, they did. My husband had the delmonico steak and he said it was flavorless. We ordered desert I got the PB pie with a hair in it. Of course Cole was super apologetic and took it off our bill but the final straw was when they charged us extra to use our credit card. I understand that cc fees can be an issue, but if you are going to charge your customers for them, I suggest you are upfront about it. If it weren't for Cole and the 2 margaritas they would be only getting a 1star. Sorry Cole we won't be back. read more

My 100th review goes to the Black Bear Tavern. The restaurant, in the heart of Colebrook, NH, is very large with plenty of parking, seating, and offers a roomy tavern area. We got to it via the VT/NH Snowmobile Commerce trail though it's right on Main Street for all you car and bike folks. A bonus for us it is right next to a Ski Doo dealer!! As far as the food, I had a bowl of homemade corn chowder while my friends ate from a bountiful salad bar. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. Our meals were excellent and plentiful even at the affordable prices showing good food doesn't have to be expensive. Our bill was less than $20 with tax and tip! My friends, who live in the area, now make the Black Bear one of their favorite places to eat. I would too. read more

Was driving for 3 hours and decided to take a break. Ordered chicken alfredo and a beer. The beer (Bud Light Draft) was flat. Went use the rest room the one and only toilet did not flush. When I got my meal the alfredo looked like it had been cooked in the microwave. As I started to eat a fly was buzzing around my plate and it would not go away when I tried waving it off. The fly finally landed on my fettuccine and I had to use my knife to get it off my plate. It the process the fly lost a wing and walked around my plate in a daze. Thought I could eat where the fly had not landed and then another fly came in for a quick lunch. I thought about what might have gone on with my plate before it was served to me and I could not eat it. It cost me $27 to not eat and not use the rest room. Not my kind of place. read more
