I asked the person in the store what I'm supposed to do, and he said it could take months. They do not care if you have to lay in bed for months while they do nothing. The company recently bought Coastal Med Tech in Ellsworth. The person, Robin, who answered the phone is probably the single most rudest person I have ever had the misfortune of having to talk to. No, they didn't do any cleaning of the oxygen concentrator and have "never heard of anyone ever asking to have that done." She also stated that I was supposed to clean it all myself and that's what I had cleaning supplies for. Then she hung up on me. If there was any other place I could go, I would. Wish I could leave no stars - horrible customer service ethic. For the last 18 months I have been purchasing disposable medical supplies from Black Bear Medical. The shipment from last month had a 40% defective rate so I sent an email to Lorraine who handles these products. She wrote back and said I needed to deal with the manufacturer. Hello Lorraine - I bought these from Black Bear Medical not the manufacturer! No information about how to contact the manufacturer, no apology, no empathy - nothing. Just an impolite go away. My business is going elsewhere. Including a wheelchair (which was $4500) my purchases with Black Bear Medical over the last year have been in excess of $7000. read more

I wanted to do business with this company as it was local (Portland) and all the others recommended were out of state. From day one the staff here, although always polite, have seemed to lack knowledge. Add to this the fact that the billing system is horrendous results in my waiting anxiously until I can stop doing business with them. I have written to the CEO twice and the letters have gone unanswered. My next letter will be to the Portland Press Herald columnist Bill Nemintz because I can't believe any company can be this bad. I recognize that the clowns in Washington, D.C. have made medical bills incomprehensible but Black Bear is either totally stupid or is playing both the customer and Medicare. Awful company. They recently acquired Coastal Med Tech. If you're looking for accurate and timely replenishment of your CPAP supplies then forget it. I've had to call several times to check on wrong orders and I'm still dealing with the issue. Person working the counter there also could care less. As I waited for my problem order to be fixed (which it still hasn't been), a man clearly needing help opening the door arrives. The counter person just stares at him as he's sitting down... I mean ... seriously???!!!! Doesn't help or even acknowledge the person needs help and this is a MEDICAL supply store. Take your business elsewhere. This place sucks big time. read more

Would never try to do business with this place again. I broke my foot and my doctor told me I had to be non-weight bearing for 8 weeks. Needed a rolling knee scooter to get around. When my doctor gave me the prescription for the scooter she said Medicare does not pay for it. I said I have other insurance and she said maybe they will pay for it. Called my Blue Cross Blue Shield and they told me they would pay for it but it would need to go to Medicare first to be denied before they would pay for it. My doctor faxed the prescription in to Black Bear Wednesday. She told me to wait until the next day and check with them to be sure they received the fax. Called the next day (Thursday) and asked if they had received the fax and they checked and said they did. Specifically told them that I knew Medicare did not pay for the scooter but it would still need to be submitted to be denied before my Blue Cross would pay for it. After 10 days of calling to find out the status of the scooter was finally told (after 10 days) that Medicare does not pay for scooters. Duh, I know that and I told you that at the very beginning. Said you have to submit it to Medicare for denial and then submit it to Blue Cross. The lady I talked to said we don't bill secondary insurances. Wait, what?!? I have insurance that will pay for it but you won't bill them? Asked if they would submit it to Medicare for denial and I would submit it myself to Blue Cross and she said "no". "We won't bill Medicare for something we know won't be covered". Why did it take 10 days to find this out. You couldn't have told me back on day 1 that you wouldn't bill my secondary insurance. Would never ever try to do business with them again and will tell anyone I know that might be thinking about doing business with them to go elsewhere. Would rate this no stars if I could. read more

Rude. Bought a stethoscope. Before walking out, noticed one in a different color. Green. Sentimental because a close friend and nurse passed away last month and it was her favorite colors. The color of life. Asked if I could trade stethoscope for that one. Same item, different color. Cashier rolled her eyes. Stated that she had to do a return for the other one and ring it up again. I told her to forget it. Seemed too much of a problem for her. P.S. The eye rolling.....is that a Maine thing??? The rest of us find it extremely rude and condescending. Very unhelpful. My husband ordered ostomy supplies from them. There was no sense of caring for their customers throughout the process. He was told they had never heard of one item he has been purchasing for over 10 years from another company. Asked them to look into it and order for him and never heard from them again. When we followed up, they said they found the item and were waiting for him to give the go ahead to order. When we picked up the item, we were told we would have to pay out-of-pocket since they had no billing code to submit to insurance. Insurance company told us they have a contract with Black Bear and Black Bear should have been in contact with them to resolve the issue. The people who work there were close to being rude and made it very clear they did not want to do more than they absolutely had to. We will be looking elsewhere for future orders. read more

This is the only power chair servicer in the area that I know of that serves Medicare clients. With hundreds of such chairs in the greater Bangor area they are always busy and I have come to appreciate their wonderful back office and service department. They always manage to fit my son's chair in to diagnose the problem and start the complex medicare paperwork to get the part as soon as possible. They are respectful of my son and his care givers and do a great service job. I have purchased many smaller retail items from them and have always found the staff knowledgable and friendly. read more
