I wish I could give five stars for our waitress and the food. Our waitress was awesome even though she was very busy and had a lot of tables. The food was outstanding. At the end of our meal however another waitress came and cleared my dish and almost slid off the place mat on the floor and dropped my napkin. Then she came back for my other dish. That's when she told us that we needed to leave because there was a party of fourteen waiting for us to finish and they needed our table. VERY RUDE. We didn't even have a ticket yet. Our waitress came back to bring our ticket. She was unaware of what the other one had told us. She was very apologetic. We did make sure OUR waitress got the tip. Black Bear Diner is our favorite local place to dine. The food is exceptional and the portions large, although smaller portions are available and priced accordingly. Our family eats there several times a month and we are never disappointed. On the rare times that something is less than great, it is quickly corrected. The staff are well experienced and unfailingly courteous. The owner and his son are "hands on" managers and quickly take care of any problems. While BB may be a chain, it's got good quality food for breakfast. I had corned beef and eggs and the beef was homemade and excellent. The biscuit was huge. The thing that stands out most about Black Bear (the Madras location, at least) is the exceptional service. I have been there 3 times and each time had a server who was concerned to ensure we enjoyed our meal, without over-hovering. It was really remarkable. We had steak burrito($8.99) & taco salad($9.99). Considering the prices, they were good quality and generous portions. I think this place is better than most of chain family diners. The salad was fresh and had plenty of avocados. The burrito was very good with a lot of steak chunks. As matter of fact, it was too big to finish, I had to ask for a doggy bag. Server was really friendly & made us feel at home. We were happy enough to leave 30% tip. I definitely would eat here again. read more

This is by far the best restaurant in the area and the best black bear in the chain. The fact that it is family owned is obvious by the friendly service and atmosphere. The food is the best I've ever had, and my family are very picky eaters. I can honestly say I have never had a bad meal, and its worth coming back to try all the different options. We were driving to portland early this morning and saw that they opened at 6am so we decided to call in an order to go about 5 after 6. We called 3 times before someone answered the phone to take our order. We got there around 6:30a.m. and it looked closed, so we tried calling again and nobody answered. We saw 2 employees pull up and one of the cooks unlocked the front door for them and then locked it back up, so needless to say we did not get to eat our breakfast this morning.. the owner of this place should not be waiting tables he is grumpy and very unprofessional, sitting there watching him his was more interested in running to the door to get more customers than taking care of the ones he has and the poor lady up front didn't have anyone! our food would have been better if it had been hot but im sure it sat there awhile. When you go through the town of Madras and your family is starving, the pickings are slim. Unless you want fast food, this is really your only option. We have even here many times and the food is not bad. The service is horrible. You cannot be in a hurry when you go here. We received the worst service here last night. They were busy and luckily we were seated right away. The hostess seated us and brought us coffee and a soda for the kids. The waitress came right over and asked for our order. We had just opened our menus, so asked for a couple more minutes. That was a huge mistake. We never saw her again. We finally flagged down another waitress and she took our order. Coffee was never refilled and no one ever came back to our table to ask us how it was or if we needed anything. We stopped a busboy and asked him if we could have some water and a coffe refill. 15 mins later another busser returned. We asked for more cream, but got tired of waiting. So we asked the tale next to us if we could have some cream from their table. They were nice and shared. The waitress walked by our table after an hour and slapped our bill on the table without a word. We wanted to order dessert. They have wonderful looking desserts in the case. She did not give us the option and we were not ale to flag anyone down. We waited in the hostess line by the front door for 10 mins to pay our bill. I think we could have dined and dashed and no one would have even noticed. Lucky for them we are honest folk. The food we ordered was good, I am pretty sure. Could have been we were just starving and anything would have tasted good. Tis place has great potential. The service needs work. read more

the only person waiting tables was the owner the place was full the service was very poor I never saw this guy smile once, it took forever to get waited on we almost left and then when we got our food he never came back again. the food was good, the service very bad, the prices were ok. also why is the owner waiting on tables? he's really bad at it and he's making money off me from eating here. sorry but I am not tipping the guy that owns the joint he needs to hire some help and stay in the back where he belongs! read more

'Twas my first time at a Black Bear Diner. I was going across Oregon on a trip at the time and my party felt a slight need to consume. So a fellow member of my party utilized this app to find us a nearby restaurant. We agreed that this comfort food place would suffice to refuel us on our journey. As we parked we noticed that there were a lot of trucks. And that the Black Bear Diner really took its name into itself in a weird way by having pictures of bears and statues of bears and carvings of bears and bear themed menus and furniture and other stuff. It was as if it was scared that the other restaurants would make fun of it at the playground because it didn't have a theme and so it tried it self consciously made everything to do with bears. So we strolled in. We were noticed pretty quickly and given our seats over on this nice wooden table which was right next to some strange people who were probably HARDCORE Donald Trump supporters who messed with the waiter guy which was strange. They were also really into hunting, which wasn't rare for the area, and kept talking about it really loudly as if they wanted everyone in to restaurant to know what their hobby of hunting was going like. And every single one of them had that pair of oakleys that look like those little kid shades that are sold at Walmart and are made of cheap oily plastic but the Oakley kind are slightly higher quality. But the Black Bear Diner had no control over this so it won't affect my review.. The waitress, who was noticeably grumpy and unhappy gave us what we thought were are menus but weren't , which were also bear themed. One of us realized that the true menus were hidden within this weird newspaper thing which hilariously had bear images on it. I ordered a peach iced tea which was a mistake. And I ordered a hamburger which wasn't a mistake at all. The peach iced tea arrived at the table delivered by some other dude. I drank a little of it to figure it out and see what it was like. It was bad. It was not the normal iced tea I was used to, but was instead a normal green tea with peach flavored syrup in the floating around in the bottom. It was sad. They didn't appear to have even stirred it, if at all. The tea that hadn't been flavored by the horribly spread out flavor was sour and old tasting, which was odd. The whole thing tasted like a old peach flavored lollipop which was melted an been left in a cup of sour forest puddle water then iced. But keep in mind that the drink I had ordered probably was the only bad one because one of my party members let me have some of their milkshake and it was excellent, not to mention that there were many other drinks available. After a suspiciously long while our food arrived. And it was great. Not phenomenal or mind blowing by a good solid hamburger. One of the things I found wrong with it was the lettuce which was not crispy and was like a felt cloth. Another thing was the patty. It wasn't very great. Kinda mediocre. But the French fries were awesome. They also had custom ketchup and Tabasco sauces which were themed like the rest of the building, again adding to my restaurant on the playground idea. I didn't get to try the other sauces but the ketchup was fine. The some of my party also really enjoyed their food and some really didn't do the quality depends on what you order. I felt like a gladiator exiting the building heading to the car as I held the door for some short dude who was wearing a really cool shirt. I rate 4/5 stars. read more
