When I first walked in here, I wept tears of joy. Well, I almost did. They have a gorgeous selection of meats, cheeses, oils, breads, chocolates, soups, spreads...all things that make me happy (except chocolate, I don't really care that much about chocolate). The staff is fantastic; they are extremely friendly, and enthusiastic about their product (with good reason). I asked if they've tasted everything in the store, and they affirmed, "We have to know what we're selling." So I'm considering getting a job here. I can't afford to eat everything otherwise, because some items are just out-of-control expensive. And I really want to eat everything. I would do it for the rabbit terrine alone ($20/lb). Barring employment, I'm not sure how to solve this problem. I want to eat here every day and stock my fridge with the entire store. Unfortunately, I have to pay rent. Oh holy mother of everything cheese. This spot is like a dream. Walking by it looks like any ol' shop you would find in the city. But as soon as that door opens and that ahh mazing smell hits you- fuggetaboutit. This shop is beautiful, aside from the monster cheese case in the back they've got this white/glass/reclaimed wood thing going on. And should you want to hang and grab a bite to eat they've got lovely high top reclaimed wood tables up front. The staffers were super nice and offered me up what felt like an endless supply of cheese samples. In reality it was like 3 samples and damn were they good. I asked the gal behind the counter if I could try something that I'd probably never heard of. She smiled and handed me a little slice of the most delicious creamy nutty cheese from some tiny town in Europe. And that girl knew her cheese- she explained origin, process, etc and I just stood there with a dumb look on my face b/c well - I like cheese. She was awesome though, after I came to she offered up a couple other samples- an amazing parm and a goat cheese that was just so. freakin'. good. Loved the vibe in this shop, loved the staff, loved the cheese. There is a full menu behind the counter of sandwiches, and baked goods to order up. As well as plenty of specialty oils, mustards, boxes of cookies, and bags of candy. I tried so much to avoid this place, and wanted so badly to dislike it, as I find Franny's to be the most overhyped, overrated restaurant in my fair borough - nay, the whole city. However, if you live in the area and like to cook at all, the breadth of unique, high-quality products are unparalleled. Need freekah? No problem! Recipe randomly suggests champagne or grenache vinegar - of course! As I've come here more often, willingly rather than begrudgingly, I've tried some of their prepared foods, which have been quite good. The cheese selection is incredible, and they have excellent craft beer and local coffee/tea/pantry options as well. The prices unfortunately don't let you forget that you are shopping at a high-quality/specialty store - they pretty much run the gamut from "I guess I could have expected that" to "Seriously? I mean, does that come with a hand job or something?" - but its still a good spot when you're willing to see the "get what you pay for" scale to fall heavily on the quality side as opposed to the thrifty side. Finally, based solely on personal experience, I would confidently estimate that you have about a 40% chance of a Maggie Gyllenhaal sighting here. read more

Unless you are a real cheese fan, the overwhelming smell of it in here is a little off-putting, so just grab your Ice Cream Sandwich from the freezer case and take a nice walk outside to enjoy it. I'm always a little wary when ice cream sandwiches are prepackaged instead of freshly made, but these are really well made. The benefit to when they are prepackaged and in the freezer case as they are here is that the ice cream is nice and hard so they don't get too messy as you eat them (that's what she...). I guess people come here a lot for cheese, but I would like to come back again to try more of the several other flavors they have for ice cream sandwiches, as well as some of the delicious looking cookies and pastries. This place is were foodies come to drool!! There is all those special ingredients you are looking for. From canned sardines to fancy beers and even some international candies. And how can you not be mesmerized by the cheese collection. I am especially drawn to the baked goods at this spot. I felt like good treats were lacking in Park Slope. And now it not only has delicious baked goods but they are those perfectly balanced desserts like Almond Cake, Orange Sesame Cake and Olive Oil Cake. Beer + Cheese Tasting - this was my first Yelp Event! A special little market place off of Flatbush Ave, which you should totally take the time to check out. Even if just for the lovely cheesy smell. There's more than just an abundance of cheese options, such as a variety of creative ice cream flavors, meats, and beer. There were 3 sampling stations with reps describing the beer and cheese pairings. I learned about some new beers which tasted better than I expected. I'm not very much a beer person so this was a great way to try new beers recommended to go well with something I do enjoy.. CHEESE! The staff was lovely, Sandy (i hope i got her name right ) was especially helpful and explained a variety of salads (see in pictures). I loved the roasted cauliflower salad, delicious! read more

The only problem with this place is that it's way too close to my apartment and it's way too easy to spend money here. But seriously, Brooklyn Larder is excellent. I've tried a few different things here and was blown away by most of them. Breakfast: The sausage egg and cheese sandwich is SO GOOD. It's a nice twist on breakfast sandwiches I get elsewhere, with hardboiled eggs, gruyere cheese and sausage with some kind of dijon-y spread on the most delicious bread. Lunch: I've tried a few of their sandwiches (think the roast beef and the ham and gruyere), and yes, they're expensive, but man they're great. You can tell just how fresh their high quality ingredients are. Treats: I don't remember exactly what I've tried, but I did like both the chocolate caramel bar and some kind of loaf cake. I don't think you can go wrong with any of their sweets. While you wait -- though I didn't find the wait to be too long -- they have a great selection of local provisions to browse. This place was a dream! First of all, the staff here are incredibly nice. From the moment I walked in, I felt welcomed and well taken care of. So this is a small grocery store, deli, take-out spot. They had a breakfast and lunch menu that you can order from, no matter the time of day. I'll admit, the entire menu looks delicious, but it's pretty expensive here. My turkey sandwich cost $14...and it was just a classic sandwich on sandwich bread! The ingredients they use absolutely taste high quality, but the price can be alarming. Nonetheless, whenever I'm feeling bad and boujee, I'll be coming back here. I'm at that life stage of totally being down for paying a lil more for a lil better. The store definitely stands out! I love all the local products that BKLYN Larder carries. As a recent grad from Ithaca, I was surprised to find Ithaca Milk Yogurt here. Yay! I decided to try their vanilla bean gelato and it was pretty good. Its super creamy and smooth, but definitely on the pricy end ( $4 for a tiny cup.) If you are using them for a business catering or corporate please DON'T!!!! I ordered a large catering order for 20 people around $500, places it on Friday for Monday delivery. The person taking my order gave me 30 minute delivery windows, we agreed on 11:30-12 bc it was a lunch meeting. I have the receipt that shows 11:30-12 pm delivery, I was only planning to arrive to the office at that time. Come Monday, the food was delivered at 10 AM, lunch was delivered at 10AM!!!! I would never ever in my life agree to that! Not only that but the receipt that was left at the office said MUST BE DELIVERED BY 10. By the time I got to the office I have no idea who had food and who didn't, which I need for reporting reasons, they screwed up my whole meeting and made me loook like an unprofessional clown. Instead of apologizing for their mistake the owner persists on telling me that their delivery windows are 2 hours and that food was room temperature, um deli meat shouldn't be at room temperature for 2 hours!! Even though BKLYN Larder has only been open a year it's no surprise they already have 74 reviews. I saw an article on them at Serious Eats and after reading the description of their meatball and provolone sandwich I had to try. The sandwich wasn't what I expected but I mean that in a good way. Instead of being the expected classic meatball hero, full meatballs, sauce topped with cheese the BKLYN Larder sandwich is more of a "press". Lightly sauced meatballs sliced in half and pressed between chabatta like bread topped with delicious provolone cheese. The staff was friendly and when they noticed I was taking pics and told them I was using them on Yelp, they got very excited. They have tasty gourmet cheeses, gelato, sorbeto, meats and more.The staff really know their products and will be happy to explain in detail. I don't know why you can't also help us just because there's an indecisive person trying out all the cheese options. Their cured meats selection is also pretty weak. I'm in LOVE! When my ex and I broke up, I was really devastated that I could no longer frequent Marlow & Daughters since it pretty much rocked my world. Luckily for me, I have a new man in my life, and his name is BKLYN Larder. I'd been in before to browse but I made my first serious trip here last night. I finally tried their Porchetta for the first time. It was buttery, salty, perfectly herbed, light and just all around awesome. Since it's apparently not socially acceptable to just eat sliced meat off of the butcher paper, I got a fantastic Neal's Yard cheese and great fresh bread to go with. The staff was so helpful and friendly, they really made me and everyone else there feel welcomed and even more excited to be there. That might be way I ended up leaving with so much food... The thing that really put them above & beyond though is the amazing gift basket that they put together for me. I had seen online that they had gift baskets for the holidays, but since my holidays involve airplanes, I couldn't have any liquids. I talked to them on the phone about what sort of things my dad likes, and when I showed up they had put together a gorgeous basket of peppers, salts, herbs, etc. They even swapped out something I knew he already had and re-arranged it. The staff is so knowledgeable and passionate about food (ready with a sample for anything you may want to try!)- it's easy to get excited, and get carried away. There are so many good reasons to love this place. Their products are always fresh and their shelves are always well stocked. You can get so many awesome food stuffs here ranging from prepared foods, homemade ice creams, fresh dairy, desserts, meats and packaged products like honey, nut butters, oils, teas and so much more. The staff are always really friendly. Whenever I stop by to grab something, I always linger at the counter to stare at all the goodies. The counter is packed tight with caramels, chocolates, cookies and chips. The staff is always ready to check you out but also willing to hang out for a minute while you look around, so it never feels like you're being rushed. The only downside to this place is the price. I spend a little over $4.00 on 64oz of milk at the park slope food coop and it's $3.50 here for 32oz. I want to buy everything in this store. The goods that line the shelves and fill the display cases are exactly what I'd choose to stock in the dream kitchen of my dream life. Sadly, I have the reality of a budget to keep me in check. But, in all serious and honesty, EVERYTHING I've tried from BKLYN Larder has been phenomenal. I've raved to friends about their assortment of cheese and I especially covet their Banana Jam. During a recent visit, I discovered their curated selection of craft brews. Over the weekend I popped in, famished, and grabbed their roast beef sandwich with horseradish mayo. While I was waiting for the sammie to be freshly assembled, I checked in on Yelp and VOILA! was granted a complimentary cookie of my choice. My hunger was then satiated with an amazingly delicious sandwich (the roast beef was so red and tender, the roll was fresh and soft, and the horseradish complemented with such subtly spicy flavor) and a -free- chewy ginger molasses cookie! While i began to munch and smile to myself I noticed some biscuits neighboring the area my cookie was taken from....bacon jam biscuits? Just stawp! If I had a larder like this at the house, I'd be obese. This place has some of the tastiest things ever. The sandwiches at lunchtime are delicious. The prepared foods are excellent. The cold cuts and cheeses are superb. I tried most things, and settled on "usual" order... Half a roasted chicken (absolutely delicious with great flavors and juicy as hell), a side (beet salad, roasted cauliflower or carrots are always good) and a desert. Icecream selection is outstanding (although quite pricy), as are many baked goods. The bread is always fresh and delicious. It's a great place to stock up if planning a party, or just looking to entertain yourself with good food. We always buy stuff here for New Years celebration and it gets all eaten. Prices are high. Not question about that. Cheaper than going to a restaurant but more expensive than similar delis. Yet the quality is top notch and I don't mind paying more to spoil myself occasionally. read more

I also got the pistachio bread which was really good. The topping had a slight sour taste to it that my friends and I couldn't figure out. One friend got the Porchetta, another the Greens & Ricotta. All were really good, light, with just the perfect amount of all the ingredients. POSITIVES: - Excellent choice of foods/sandwiches, really well made. Simple, light sandwiches. - Really friendly staff. NEGATIVES: - None. But why 4 stars? Only because I hold 5 stars to an extremely high standard - places that I tell friends they have to try, without question. As the prices went up and up over the years, like others, I rolled with it. But now the prices are up and the quality is down, as is the service. I had several turkey sandwiches with quite a bit of fat and skin left on which made the sandwich taste just plain wrong. I called to inform them and no change was made. Sadly I won't be going back. I go to Larder (at least) once per week for fresh bread and high quality cheeses. The selection of goods is diverse and eclectic. If I need find a cute little gift for a loved one or friend, I'm always certain I'll find something at Larder - the goat caramels are a favorite! I regularly get the Amy's sourdough mini boule. It's fairly popular so you have to order ahead or get in their early before it's sold out! Today I went to Brooklyn Larder and I was pleasantly surprised. They have an amazing array of cheeses but also a bunch of snacks and sandwiches. I ordered the meatball sub... and I loved it. I usually don't have such high hopes for meatball subs but this was great. The cheese was sharp ... but not to sharp. I also loved that you could see them making it, they took a little while but that's how you know it's fresh and it gave me a chance to look around the store while I waited. Don't get me wrong... the flavors are good. Fine groceries. But everything is too expensive and the service is just weird. Everyone at LARDER is so nice and passionate about the food there, and then you order a sandwich and BOOM...I'd almost rather be at the DMV! Almost... I don't necessarily mind a menu of $10+ dollar sandwiches but they should be big enough to fill me up, at least. They should double the portions... compare to Bergen Dean Sandwich around the corner to see what I mean. And, as others have pointed out, they take forever to make! Today I waited 15 minutes for a piece of toast with butter and jam... it's seriously crazy how many times I've gone here and had to wait egregiously long for a simple order. And this is sometimes when they don't even appear to be busy. The one little griddle toaster thing obviously isn't enough. The painfully slow wait is consistent... more often than not when I go here they misplace order tickets, prepare orders out of order and they act totally naive as if this subdued chaos behind the counter is normal. And I fork over a $20 for a bag of chips, a drink and tiny little crouton or a sandwich. It's a running joke in our house. We call it our "least favorite favorite place" in the neighborhood. This was the last straw for me today, I don't think I'll be going back unless they change the system and increase the portions.... which probably won't happen because clearly the place has enough wealthy lazy clientele that they'll survive. Really disappointed with the service, quality of food and overall timing of Brooklyn Larder. My husband and I have been coming here for years and the service has sadly dwindled. We ordered sandwiches off Seamless for pick up which mind you weren't ready when we went to pick them up almost 30 minutes later. We figured our sandwiches were most likely forgotten about and never got made. Once the sandwiches were finally done, we get home and my husbands Turkey Comte didn't taste right. The sandwich was bad and we had to throw it away. We then contacted Seamless who then contacted Bklyn Larder to inform them and request a refund, but Bklyn Larder decided it wasn't doable. Bad move and poor professional courtesy to a patron. We assume there was something past it's expiration date still being used. Future customers, avoid bad quality and service. @bklynlarder I hope you realize that unlike 4-5 years ago, the neighborhood has changed and has a lot of great(if not better) sandwich shops in the neighborhood so on that note, we will no longer be customers. read more

While working at the Brooklyn Flea I stopped by the Salvatore Brooklyn (handmade ricotta makers) tent and sampled an open faced sandwich that featured INCREDIBLE Creminelli sopressata from Brooklyn Larder, which opened a week ago. After experiencing the worst sunburn of my life and delivering furniture until 7:30, we decided to have a nice *cold* dinner, and went straight to the store to pick up a spread. I had already bought a baguette and delicious Salvatore Brooklyn ricotta (which is available at the Larder), so I needed some tasty supplements. Walking into Brooklyn Larder is surprising. I was expecting a fancy shmancy, wood heavy ambience with a myriad of items to choose from. Such is not the case. It's lab-like; white, shining and sterile. There's not much to choose from, but what the do have is spectacular. There's a large selection of cheeses, house cured pancetta, house made porchetta, cured meats, Italian specialty goods and locally made products. I settled on an olive mix, which included some of the meatiest, tastiest olives I have had in my life. I also paid the price - 1 lb = 12.00. The next thing I chose was the sopressata, which hit the spot the way it did at the flea market. It's a tender, garlicky sausage that is filled with flavor ($14.54, about 1/2 lb). My last choice, as things were getting expensive, was a container of chickpea salad. Folks, I think they put crack in their prepared foods. This shit was SO good. I'm not sure as to what the ingredients were, but the sauce was kind of orangey (red pepper, perhaps?), with onions and garlic and CRACK. So. So. Good. The staff was so very helpful and informative. They really know about the food they are selling, and seem to be passionate about it. They're not at all pretentious, and seemed to have smiles permanently affixed to their mugs. I was so incredibly impressed by this establishment...I wish it were closer to my house so I could take full advantage of their offerings. read more
