Hair salons are a dime a dozen...but if you are reading this you are probably like me and choosing a salon and a Stylist is about as important as picking a doctor! We've all been there.. crying for days because your new cut makes you look like a squirrel!! Well sometimes life is kind and you find a cool comfortable salon and a Stylist that is not good, not average.. but is 100% an Expert Stylist. That is what I found (thankfully!) when I walked into Bixels Studios. I was greeted very warmly as soon as I walked in the door by a friendly guy who walked up to me before I even made it to the counter! I knew that this guy knew his stuff by the way he automatically touched my hair and knew exactly what cut would work with my fine hair - he also noted my personal style and was so easy to talk too! This friendly guy is Jake, the Owner of the salon. He makes you feel comfortable and secure because of his confidence and way of cutting is so expertly done! Is he pricey? Yep. But remember the aforementioned squirrel hairstyle that made you cry...? Well there is NO CRYING in Bixels Studio! Even tho I LOVED my cut, I called and asked if we could make an adjustment.. and he was so nice about it and did not charge me extra. I have been going to Jake Bixel for hair cuts and color for the past 20 years. Any woman will tell you that's a long time to be loyal to one hairdresser! Why haven't I tried another hairdresser/salon in 20 years? Because there has been no need. Jake is a highly skilled professional who is kind and welcoming to all who enter his salon, whether it is a client or delivery person. He listens to his clients and asks if you have experienced any hair challenges since your last appointment. I think the biggest compliment that I can give is that a friend's mother said that if I hadn't told her I get my hair colored, she would have never known because it looks so natural. I started going here, maybe a year to a year and a half ago. I am very picky about my hair, so when I found Bixels, I was ecstatic. I trusted enough to bring my kids. And my daughter would always be so excited to hear that she was going to get her haircut there. My daughter decided she wanted to get pink highlights and her hair cut prior to going back to school. We were referred to the daughter since she specializes in this type of hair color. It was already known that we had used box dye in the past, Wella Color Charm from Sally Beauty and the last time she used this dye was at the beginning of 2023. It has been one week since her hair was highlighted, and it's already coming out and turning orange. I was scolded for using the box dye and was told that was the reason it didn't take. We spent $180 and left a $40 tip. I was then told by jake that his daughter had put so much time and effort into my daughter's hair and that she didn't get paid for the time or color used to try to even achieve the desired look. I guess you should know your worth maybe you should charge what you should charge instead of cutting people deals and then feeling cheated in the end. How are customers supposed to know how much they should be charged for these types of services. My daughter is now devastated and is upset about the way her hair looks and I have no clue how to fix it for her. I let the owner know that we would not be returning to his salon. And he threw in my face the fact that he offers free bang trims and I would lose out on this if I left. WOW! Unless he was talking about others, it sounded as if he was also accusing me of not tipping or forgetting to tip. Look at all my credit card slips, tips on them all. You get a cash tip with bang trims. Again, I'm not an expert at dying hair. Consult with your clients if you don't think something will work. I normally go to BIxels for massage with Judy. She only works on Saturdays and is the team massotherapist for the Browns. I need someone that can beat the sore out of me and after an hour, I am done. Problem solved. Owner is on site; my wife and daughter have never had a bad experience there. I don't have any hair so my opinion is moot. I've been to both the old location (Heisley Rd. - now closed) and the new location (Jackson St.) The new location is still in mentor and has a parking lot for patrons. I came in a several days ago for a wash and style, with Emma. I'd never had her before as a stylist. She was cordial, professional and gave me a great blowout styling! She is part owner/operator and takes great pride in her job and the salon. I would recommend this studio to folks looking for hair styling, cut and color in the Mentor area. If you check out this salon, you will see that the family-run business is priced reasonably and professionally. I would recommend calling ahead to book an appointment as their staff size is smaller now. read more

This place was great. This was the first time I had ever been there. I didn't know anyone who had ever been there. But they had just moved in around the corner from where I live so I figured why not. The atmosphere is great. It's very laid back and relaxing. The people are extremely nice. The owner's daughter cut my hair, and she did an amazing job. I showed her two pics, and she did exactly what I wanted. Now it is a bit pricey; but you know what? I felt I was worth spending my hard earned money on every now and then. So whenever I need to splurge on myself (which is going to be far more often now), that's where I'm heading. read more

If you're looking for a quiet, relaxing place to get your hair done then head to Bixels. When my stylist called to inform me that she was leaving her salon and moving to another I was upset because I LOVED the place she was leaving, but she's far too good to not follow (I'm sure someone out there can understand my fear of having to find a new stylist when you've had one you love for oh so long!) but I'm go glad I did! Bixels is the perfect salon - great relaxing decor, every kind of service you could want (hair cutting and color, waxing services, massages, nail services, even spray tan - and no it's not one of those awful turn you orange mystic tanning things but someone who actually sprays you) and the staff is excellent! Oh, and I should mention this little bonus - when you're waiting for your color/perm/whatever takes awhile to set in - you wait in one of the plentiful massage chairs (Won't lie - I always wishfully hope that my color takes a little longer to set with each visit). Products are also organic and eco friendly so you're hair never comes out feeling or looking dry or damaged. If you're looking for a new salon, then I couldn't recommend this one any more! Came in to get foils and a cut, long story short my hair color didn't come out quite as I was hoping. Sometimes this happens, no big deal. I probably didn't explain what I wanted very well and I already had some weird color in their from a previous salon. The reason why I gave 5 stars is for their costumer service!! I called back and explained my displeasure with the color, my hairstylist got me in fast and offered to re-color my hair FREE OF CHARGE! She was so nice about it and the second time around it came out perfect! The whole staff is just extremely friendly and pleasant to be around. Love my new hair, will be coming back. read more

I've been to Bixel's a few times in the past for pedicures and a massage. I've always had good experiences and been happy with the service I received, so today, when looking for a new place to get my hair colored and cut, I tried someone new. I'm so happy with the results Rachel gave me! From the time I enter I've always been warmly welcomed. There is coffee and tea for self service in the lobby with cozy seating. The spa/salon is set up with several different divided spaces and rooms and you really don't feel like there's many others even there. It makes you feel like you're getting special attention! When your hair is washed you are offered a complimentary hot towel facial and an arm and hand massage. My hair was done in a private room where i was offered beverages and magazines. The atmosphere is quiet and private and comfortably trendy in the decor. I gave my stylist a lot of leeway in deciding what to do with my hair and the color turned out absolutely gorgeous. The pricing is very fair. In the past I've also been happy with my pedicures and my massage. I'm thinking I will be becoming a regular at Bixel's! Keep up the great work read more

I have been going to see Jake even before he opened this salon. He has helped me threw many hair problems and experiments. I have dark brown hair and he has helped me go all different shades of brown to a bleach blond. I hate when I have orange and red tones in my hair and he had always made sure I had none of that. Was quoted one price on the phone and charged a different price when I got there after the haircut. When I called to make the appointment, I was very specific in my questions to make sure I was clear on pricing. When I asked to see manager about pricing, Manger told me "Sorry, we can't guarantee prices over the phone". Have NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A THING. I have never seen a business run so poorly. when I called to explain my side to the owner, he talked over me, would not let me get a word in, insulted me and then hung up on me. Have never had such bad service in my life. With social Media as big as it is, I cannot believe that anyone would take a chance at having a bad review. The old story goes " have a good experience, and tell 1 person, have a bad experience and tell 20". I will tell everyone I know about this experience. I have heard other complaints about this salon from friends . Some of the staff have no idea what they are doing. The owner claims to be a "Christian". Extremists.... As I read through the brides bad experience , I can see exactly how that happened. Never mind that the party spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars there. That didn't seem to matter to the owner. He wanted those 2 appointments that were missed paid for. I will make sure that everyone I know hears about how money grubbing this low class salon is. True class takes responsibility . read more

I recently moved out of Ohio so I no longer go to Bixel's, but my GOSH do I miss it! Kali was the absolute best. She is amazing with hair and honestly one of the sweetest people I've ever met. The salon is beautiful and it offers a lot of spa services. I got a massage here with my mom and sister around Christmas and it was nothing short of magical. The atmosphere once you walk into the massage area is so peaceful and beautiful. My masseuse (I don't recall her name) was incredible! My mom still gets her hair done here, and she always has fun stories to tell me about her chats with the owner, Jake (who is also a very sweet and talented man!) My dear mom is so particular and picky about her hair and this is the only place she has EVER become extremely attached to, and for good reason. Also, you cannot beat their prices! The stylist I had is a very sweet girl, but does not know what she is doing. Not at all! I mean she tried hard, but lacks knowledge and training. I went in for highlights at my colored root area but we decided to do a fresh root color because the one I came in with was too gold for my liking. She touched up my root area and it was even more gold! The owner told the stylist to redo it by deepening the background color to decrease the gold, and I asked the stylist be sure to keep that deeper color very close to the scarp, so my crown area would not be too dark, as my ends are pale blond, she said she would keep it very close to my scalp - but the color ended up two inches out from the root, leaving my whole crown area brunette, instead of a soft neutral blond tone, only slightly darker than my pale ends. I also ended up with one wide, bold, gold streak coming out from each temple, due to bad placement and under processing . When I asked for just the crown area to be fixed by adding highlights over that dark area at the crown, they refused telling me it looked nice. The owner asked me if it is a pattern that I always want it redone! Now, I had been there only once before for highlights, and after I went home I called to schedule more highlights, my fault because I had not asked for more while there, so I gladly paid for the new visit, so I was never redone for free! I have never had such a bad experience at any salon! I was embarrassed and made to feel like it was all my fault! I never write bad reviews, but this was such an awful experience for me. Yes, the owner did not charge me, but that was the only right thing to do, as I have to have my whole head redone by someone else and it is always more costly for a stylist to correct someone else's mistakes! read more

I LOVE GOING TO BIXEL'S! My family of six have been coming here once a month since the place opened, and it's always been a positive experience. Although this is a rather classy salon, my kids have always felt welcome and men won't feel like they've they've stepped into a "women-only" zone. The stylists are some of the nicest people I've ever met, while the decor is sophisticated and airy without being snobby. We have had haircuts from Jake (the owner), Nickie, Annie and Beth. In all cases they were attentive to what we wanted and delivered flawlessly. If they have gaps in the schedule, the staff will sometimes sit my young girls in the chair and give them a touch of makeup. This is one of those places where everyone has a warm smile, customers chat with each other, and the staff seem to genuinely love their jobs. You won't be disappointed! read more

I honestly cannot say enough about Bixels. Jake has been doing my hair for years! I constantly get compliments about how beautiful it is. From the moment you walk in the door, you feel like you are at home. It does not have the stuffy feel some other salons in the area will give you. Not only is Jake wonderful at doing hair, he would do anything for anyone. He even comes in at 7 am on his day off to do my hair as I have a very busy schedule. I don't know many others that would do that!! I have had massages, pedicures, facials, manicures, and waxing done at Bixels and have always been beyond satisfied with not only the results, but also the care given to me during the services. It was clear less than half way through that despite a picture and very specific instructions, this cut was not going to go well and I had wasted my money. Rather than try to achieve results with this particular stylist, I went to another salon and got an actual haircut. PLEASE, if you cannot perform the requested services, just let people know! I had previously gone to an Aveda salon, but was so disappointed that I had spent over $200 at one appointment only to have the color drastically fade within three weeks. I knew i had to find a new (non-Aveda) salon before I went broke. As I'm somewhat new to this area, I found Bixels Salon via Yelp and made my first appointment with Angela. Unlike other salons I've been to, Angela took a lot of time to ask me what I wanted and helped me select my color. She used Keune color on my hair - which I've never used but have heard really great things about - and it looks gorgeous. She did a fantastic job on my cut, color and style - surpassing my expectations. The owner stopped in to talk to me and he was very nice and welcoming. My experience here was really great. If you're looking for a full-service salon with top of the line products and knowledgeable, customer-oriented staff members this is the place!! read more

I waited a long time for my first appointment with Jake and I went back a few times too. I got a good hair cut but I was so put off by his personality at first that I wasn't sure if this was the right place for me. The last time I went I was appauled at the way he treated his staff -- his assistant and a student trainee I think -- not sure. Any way, he was sarcastic and negative and I am sure they were humiliated while he just went on doing my hair. In all the time I was there, I don't recall hearing many postive comments, except when he was talking about himself. I think Bixel's may have alot to offer. The receptionist, Emmie(?) is as sweet as can be and the person who did my nails one time was great too. But Jake. Well no wonder L&G doesn't miss him. I am going back to my previous stylist who is professional and finds the best in people. read more

While I found the staff to be pleasant and welcoming I can't say that I was or am thrilled with my cut and color. (My service was done approx. 2 weeks ago) I requested for my highlights to be a cooler blond they are still a warm blond, there is a lack of definition with the color. My cut was ok....nothing great. However, what was most disappointing was the fact I had to go home to style my hair...the styling was non-existent; my hair was flat and lifeless. Again the environment was nice, but I don't see what all the hype is about. read more

I flew to Ohio to be in my friend's wedding, and the bridal party spent the morning at Bixels getting our hair and makeup done. They took GREAT care of us. The four of us were in and out in just about 2 hours, we all looked fabulous, and team of women that worked on us were fantastic. Christian, Tara, Beth, and Tina were all professional, adorable, quick, and did incredible work. I even got my bangs trimmed! This California girl probably won't make it back to visit them, but I HIGHLY recommend them. read more

THIS PLACE IS AWFUL. I made my appointment for the first time over the phone and when i arrived they were running behind. i was then greeted by the owner who explained to me that the stylist i was supposed to be with couldn't see me because her dad died which i felt was a bit of an over share. i then had the pleasure of meeting the girl who later ended up completely FRYING MY HAIR. after the second full head of highlights that i didn't ask for bc she messed up the first set... i went home. i woke up the next morning to take a better look at my hair and it was yellow orange and red and the highlights started about an inch away from the scalp. when i called to make a complaint i was told the owner would call back. he did not. instead i got a call from someone else who i never met. she explained to me that it would be 75$ to fix and that i should be so lucky bc they didn't charge me for that second set of highlights haha anyways i will NEVER go back to this salon. read more

I made an appointment to get a pedicure and a manicure and decided to pay the extra $10 to upgrade to a shellac manicure. I had noticed that my nails were chipping terribly bad from the top. My cousin, who does nails, told me they did not wrap the tip which caused them to look terrible. I called the salon to inform them and was told I would hear back from a manager Monday or Tuesday. It's now Saturday and never heard from anyone. I was not looking for anything except a sincere apology and to be sure their nail techs do it right for the next customer. Guess I won't be retuning there any time soon :( read more

i see my review was deleted, as it was a less than favorable review. no worries, i'll post another one! i was a customer at bixels salon in mentor for the past couple years. i got married 12/7/13, and scheduled 15 appts between me, mothers, bridesmaids flower girl, etc. kevs step mom got food poisoning and ended up not making her appt. the flower girl is shy, and we ended up having another bridesmaid just do her hair real quick bc she wasnt comfortable getting it done by a stranger. so we had 13 people getting their hair and makeup done, and the flower girl and step mom didnt ensd up getting anything done. everyone looked great, and i have no complaints about my hair or makeup. in fact, i was planning on continuing to use my makeup artist, as she did such a great job. however, as we were packing up to leave, the receptionist came up to me and said i owed for the other 2 missed appts. i said i would talk to the group and we would come up with a solution. as im explaining it to everyone, the owner comes storming over and told me that i OWE him for the 2 appts. didnt even give me time to explain to everyone what was going on. we decided we did not owe anything. no services were rendered, so what did we owe for? we paid a lot of money for the other appts, so really what was the loss? so we left and headed to the ceremony. apparently, they called my sis in law on the way to the church and the owner screamed and cussed at her. saying we were rude and i was a b*tch. he had her info in the system, bc she is a customer. so basically, he called his customer to yell at them about another customer and insult them. he also said another girl didnt pay. however, she was sitting right there and explained she paid in cash. that was cleared up, he said his mistake. so the ceremony went on, and the reception. i then left for our honeymoon the next day and was gone for a week. he ended up calling my mom, another customer, so he had her info in the system as well and told her he was calling me all week and i never replied. well yea, i was out of the country so i didnt get ur calls. he told her he was going to charge my credit card and he was just calling to let her know. he also reminded her what a b*tch i was. thanks pal, real professional. he bullied my mom into paying for the services that were never rendered, and also made her pay for the discount he gave me... i was given a discount bc my stylist left the salon, so my next service if i stayed at bixels was supposed to be 50% off. he changed his mind and made her pay the full price, and for the other 2 appts. i will NEVER go to this salon again. i wrote another review on yelp, but it was removed today so i just wanted to let everyone know how the owner of bixels treats people. he calls customers yelling, and cussing and bullies them into paying for stuff that they dont owe. read more
