The place was not busy (surprisingly) when I walked in around lunch time. The spread on the counter…read moreof curries and fried items seemed very limited and in tiny containers. Ordered a Masala Dosa and Veg Kottu Roti. My go to dishes in a Sri Lankan restaurant. The fact that no other customers came in was worrisome to me that did I make a good choice by coming here. The Masala Dosa comes in a container sliced in two rather than the entire wrapped in foil at one of nearby place (our favourite). The Dosa (crepe) much thicker than it should be make it too doughy and filling not flavoured enough. The accompanying sambhar was nothing great as well. The chutney too thin and watery but was surprisingly much better. It hit the right notes on flavour, spiciness and salt. The Kottu Roti was cooked with minimal veggies and much spicier than I anticipated. I was fine, but the Mrs not so much. And this was asking it to be mild. Need to try the HOT when I am all alone. The redeeming factor was that it contained Nutrella pieces (Indian continent soy pieces). The quantity was disappointing as well. $8.50 for a Masala Dosa (similar price to a sit down restaurant and much better quality or several $s expensive than the one sold at a nearby Sri Lankan place) and $7 for Kottu Roti - same as Masala Dosa. Now I know why there were not many people during lunch!

My first experience with Sri Lankan cuisine, don't have a base to compare though but the chicken…read moreBiryani and the Kothu chicken we got was good. I actually loved the spice level of Kothu but biryani was way spicy for me to handle. Different spices than the Indian food but I liked it. Readily available appetizers included potato wada, chicken patties, idli, medu wada. Potato wada was also spicy but tasty. This is small place - take out only. You don't have to wait long. Decent pricing. Ample parking space

As a Sri Lankan, I arrived at Hopper Hut not merely hungry, but expectant -- the kind of quiet,…read morepersonal longing that only a diaspora craving can produce. Social media had done its work, flooding my feed with the golden bowls of appa from Colombo street stalls and rooftop eateries across the island. The question was whether this unassuming Scarborough plaza outpost could answer that call. It could, and it did. Hopper Hut occupies a modest space tucked into a nondescript strip mall on Ellesmere Road -- a setting that makes no architectural promises and need not. The dining room at the back is functional and warmly utilitarian, evoking the no-frills confidence of a kitchen that trusts its food entirely. The atmosphere is decidedly casual, bordering on spartan, yet there is something deeply familiar and unhurried about it -- a kind of timeless, neighbourhood authenticity that more polished establishments spend years trying to manufacture. The hoppers themselves are the undisputed centrepiece, and they deliver with conviction. Fermented rice-flour batter, lacework-crisp at the edges, yielding and softly chewy at the bowl's centre -- the texture is precisely what the form demands. One is advised, however, to receive them with immediacy: like all great bread, the hopper is a creature of the moment. The short journey home diminishes their crispness in a way that no reheating can fully redeem. Plan accordingly.

This place felt like a Time Machine to srilanka in the 90s…read more But tbh. The food was average. Crab curry, crab was clearly not of great quality. But the gravy was tasty. Our server was able to keep our order in mind despite us being a party or 10. That was impressive. As for ambience. Honestly was kinda outdated but felt like a piece of home.
