I used to get my haircut from Bishop's in Downtown San Jose and boy howdy what a difference in quality of service. First off the Pleasanton location doesn't use their booking system. The booking system will take appointments, but the stylists there do not use them to plan. I booked a long hair cut and a beard trim, and I walk in to find that 2 of the barbers don't do long hair, and the third has 2 other people in chairs when I walk in. After waiting for about 10 minutes after my appointment time, another person with an appointment comes in and is told it's going to be about an hour. 40 minutes after my appointment time, I get seated in a chair while the other 2 are waiting. My stylist asks how short I want it cut, if I want layers and if I want face framing. I reply that I want it about shoulder length, yes to layers and yes to face framing. She proceeds to cut straight across above my shoulders and then ask if that length is good. It was clearly too short but there's actually nothing that can be done at that point. She then just doesn't do the layers on the back and does admittedly do the face framing. All and all I would say that she was cutting my hair for maybe 5-10 minutes. Then she tells me that for the beard trim I would have to wait for a different stylist to become available because that's not a service she offers. Understanding at this point what kind of service I was going to be able to expect I simply ask to pay and leave. The guy ringing me up apologizes for not being able to get to the beard trim as they are very busy, charges me the $54, and I take my leave. I understand it was a busy day, I understand that a guy with long hair and a beard isn't exactly a common client, and that I was a first time client so there wasn't a pre-established expectation of service. But I feel like letting a client sit for 40 minutes after their appointment then spending 6 minutes on their haircut warrants a 1 star review. read more

This took me a while to make this review as I got a hair cut from here a few weeks ago. I was trying to compose myself as I was very disappointed with my hair, but it wasn't bad, I just did not receive what I wanted. I made an appointment by phone, I came in after work as I just wanted a trim and some curtain bangs. I was greeted and sat down, I had a different lady from last time so I was a bit more nervous. I told her what I wanted and gave her some reference photos as well. I did shampoo, it was a great experience but a little bit of the water while rinsing was going on the back of the collar of my shirt, I didn't think much of it as it wasn't too serious to get mad over, just a small wet spot on my back. Now to the cut, I was pretty disappointed. My hair goal is to keep my hair long and healthy as I just wanted a trim and some curtain bangs. I instead got really thick layers and my hair looked very thin from back and front. I asked her to trim just an inch but soon realized she cut almost 3 inches! She also started using thinning shears at the end. :( Now, I don't hate the haircut I received, it was nicely layered and even, however it just wasn't the haircut I wanted. My hair did come out very soft at the end of the day so I got 50% of what I wanted. I would like to mention they do have really great tools here (they use Dyson tools for hair drying!) Overall, She was a very nice person. I believe there was just some miscommunication before the cut. The cut was very cheap ($52 + $10 shampoo) so I don't think I could complain for it besides the unwanted layers and how short my hair became, but eventually it will grow out! read more

Another fantastic experience at Bishops. This time was with Lisa. I called and asked on a Monday evening if they had an appointment available that evening. She said yes, come on by. I went in and said I need a trim and face framing layers and I have 20 minutes. Can you make it happen? She said I'll even blow dry and leave you with 2 mins to spare and she did just that! I haven't seen such a disrespectful and worst business ever in my life, first of all we called them and booked an appointment for 3 persons consist of two kids and one adult. Apart from having an appointment, there were three hair dresser hanging out but doesn't know how to do kids hair cut and on top of that, they can't understand or interact in ENGLISH. If I could I would give this place a "Terrible Experience" rating if it was available. They continue to try to take my factual review down because it speaks to their unprofessionalism and inability to perform services correctly. Took my daughter here to have an all over brown color applied and to add blonde highlights. Showed the owner (LISA) a photo, she confirmed she could do it no problem in 2 hours. 5 hours later I was shocked to see my daughters hair black, having been severely over processed, with ashy gray highlights and orange and yellow pieces. She also experienced severe breakage. I notified the owner this was a disaster and unacceptable for my 12 year old daughter to have her hair destroyed like this. She was very rude and confrontational with a terrible attitude as my daughter stood there crying and I was doing everything I could to not completely lose it. She said she could fix it. She then proceeded to add yellow toner to my daughters hair with her receptionist who is not licensed to be working on hair which is not ok. My daughter ended up with severe damage and was sent out of the salon with wet hair and hair dye stains all over her face according to the owner because it was close to closing time. I was waiting in the car as I assumed based on the disaster of an outcome it would take some time to correct it. This is not okay, they overcharge you and misrepresent their pricing as I was told highlights would be $150 and an additional 60 for the brown only to wind up with a $310 bill which I prepaid thinking we would have no issues. Boy was that a mistake. My daughter was devastated!!!! I immediately notified the owner I wanted a full refund because her hair was a disaster she refused and after being threatened with a complaint she had her receptionist refund me half my money $150 which is not acceptable because I had to pay to get her hair repaired to the best of my ability considering the severe damage. This place victimizes people with terrible work, unprofessionalism and allowing untrained, unlicensed people to work in clients heads. See photos. This establishment and its owner in particular are guilty of gross negligence and/or incompetence; unlicensed practice of cosmetology, and misrepresentation/false advertising of services. Okay so I shouldn't review just after a haircut just like you shouldn't email when you're angry. Upon reflection, (and some Googling) I have discovered that I received exactly the haircut I asked for - I just didn't like it. So, here's an honest review. This is a professionally operated business with plenty of stylists, who focus on having modern scheduling online scheduling, and the convenience of having availability 7 days a week, even for walk-ins or same day appointments. The interior is stylish and modern with plenty of product and chairs. The stylist gave a great scalp massage and the cut took awhile, but her English was poor and so I didn't have the full discussion consultation I'm used to at other salons that book up months in advance. They have me plenty of time and she focused on getting it right - though I stopped her. Prices were more than great clips and reflected the more modern salon, but in my view were still very reasonable. I would come here again if I needed a haircut in a pinch, but I would make sure I had a very clear picture of what I wanted and proactively communicated that at the start. Oh AND - they have excellent customer service and contacted me within a week to make it right, offering a free re-do or a gift card to get a redo at another Bishops. To me, this shows it's a really well run business. The long version: I ended up here because I was overdue and needed a haircut - ASAP - for a work trip. On a Sunday. The only places open were Great clips, SportClips, and Bishops. Not having heard of Bishops, they seemed much more stylish and modern, and salon-like. Not only did they have online scheduling, the person who answered the phone was courteous, friendly, and happy to accommodate with open timeslots. When I arrived, there were two chairs open, both with customers, one finishing up. The stylist who helped me didn't have great English, and the desk clerk had to help translate with Google translate behind me. This did not inspire confidence, but when I said long layers she nodded, smiled, and got it. Her English was also fine to get through the rest of the haircut. Her cut took awhile, but the scalp massage was very nice, as was the shampoo and style, though the style took awhile as well. When finishing the cut, she took some time trying to even up the left and right. She kept going shorter, and only too late did I realize I did NOT want the front cut so short, so I stopped before she evened up the front. I threw my hair in a ponytail as soon as I got to my car, and only later realized just how much I hated it. But this isn't entirely their fault. I'm used to the stylist saying: " well we can do this, but I want to be careful not to go too short in the front because it'll get wispy and flip out and not sit right". This stylist did none of that, she simply delivered on what I ordered. If you have short hair, or have super long hair, or know exactly what you want, I would definitely recommend this place. If you're like me and don't always know what's gonna look best on you, I would maybe ask for a more experienced stylist or go to a different salon. read more

My son gets his hair cut from Feng. We've been to other local barber shops recommended by others, and places like SportsClip. They don't come close to what Feng can do. Most places are a one-cut-fits-all type of establishment and give me heart palpitations as I watch them butcher my son's hair with a bowl cut. Feng knows hair and knows which cut will work with my son's hair. He also knows what the kids consider cool. The salon is hip and they offer beverages (water, sparkling water, beer, White Claw) to everyone, even if you're just here waiting for your son to finish getting his haircut. On top of selling products, they also sell cool merchandise like tees, beanies and hoodies. And the best part is that they don't push you to buy products. read more

I would NOT go again. My son got a long hair cut- she cut his hair in 5 minutes. I asked her to correct it as it was much longer in the back. She corrected it somewhat but explained to me it's the best she could do since he's growing out a mo-hawk. It was very bowl shaped- she took too much off in the Front and left the back long. So, $52 for a rinse (he had just washed his hair so she rinsed it, a 5 minute haircut, and a blow out). To be clear- after she was 'done' she did spend some time trying to straighten it out- but tried to get away with a 5 minute hair cut. Whoever cut my hair good job hope you keep learning to cut hair, I asked for a long cut but you gave me a short cut and ended up being a lopsided and much much shorter than what was desired and requested. Then took pictures of what I showed and of my cut, that's also when they decided to tell me they don't speak any English so anything I was asking to be fixed or at least evened out the lopsided side got lost in translation. I booked an appointment with that stylist but upon arrival I was sat with someone else. I've been a repeat customer now and would have continued to be but the fact they didn't have the courtesy to call and let me know that I would be seated with a different hairstylist assures me that this is not a well run business. From what I've seen there are only 2 good hair stylists for men... sadly even though Dennis might have given me the best haircuts ever I don't think I will ever return or give this business another penny of my money. My hair is cute but dry, wrong color and my scalp has a CHEMICAL BURN. It has been maybe three weeks and my scalp still burns. I'll be going to the doctor to see if I can get it treated. Haircut was okay and they seem experienced in male cuts. Price was ehh for the service but do not let them touch your hair with bleach. Story: I came in for a full color. I have a lot of hair so I wasn't expecting a quick process. I asked for a trim and after the stylist immediately handed me off to someone else far far less experienced to bleach my hair. She came up about 10+ times to correct him on how to bleach. It was clear he had very little experience and I'm all for learning but this was too much. He started with my scalp. I think I had bleach on my scalp for almost 3x longer than the rest of my hair. Which was hours. I had color on the ends so I was expecting to be there for longer. However it was about an hour in before they even touched the ends of my hair. I could hear the stylists tell him to hurry up and how it was bad for my hair. they wrap my hair in plastic since my roots are fully bleached and the rest of my hair is not. Nobody is watching my hair they're all doing their own thing. My scalp starts BURNING like hell and I have to let them. They rush me over and wash it out. I seriously thought I was gonna lose my hair and took and Advil to combat the pain. My hair is uneven so they apply more bleach. Hair comes out extremely uneven but they assure me it will be fine after toner. I told them I trust the process. When I went in I asked for dark hair and requested one level lighter than the picture. I have strawberry blonde hair. It's cute but far from the pic. I was going to say something but I've been there for almost 7 hours and I just wanted to go home. The colored ends are still visible which I expected but my natural hair on the top is extremely uneven to the point where people have pointed it out. I've had my hair bleached before and it was nowhere near this dry and damaged. They covered it with a treatment. after a few washed the damage really started to show. I've grown my hair out for 5 years and to see it all be damaged so bad in one session broke my heart. My hair is never oily but now it's so oily I can't brush it through sometimes since the scalp is so dry Was the price good? Not the worst. Would I rather spend an extra $500 to get healthy even hair the color I want and a scalp without a chemical burn. 10000% yes. I am giving this place two stars instead of one star because of their availability. It was nice to see somebody that would fit me in on a Sunday before my work trip on Monday. HOWEVER I booked a blowout for $50 and I got a pretty shitty hair wash & blow dry. My hair was not even dry when I left. A blow out consists of smoothing out the hair and using a round brush and it usually will let me go 5-7 days without washing my hair so it's perfect for business trips. But this time my hair looked like A kindergartner blew it dry. Absolutely, 100%, not a blow out. It's a Hair wash with blow dry. Definitely should not be $50. Even if this is less expensive, This wasn't even worth a wash and blow dry. It was a complete waste of my time and my money. Bishops was recommended to me after I asked on a local Facebook page for hair cut/color recommendations. It had been a year since doing anything to my hair and I wanted a change. I ultimately chose Bishops because of the good reviews on Yelp, proximity to where I live, and reasonable prices compared to other high-end salons in Pleasanton and Livermore. I saw Roxanne got good reviews so I decided to go to her, and I'm SO glad I did. She was kind, incredibly knowledgeable, and highly skilled at her craft. I also really appreciate she wrote a price quote BEFORE we began so that we could discuss adjustments and I knew what I was getting into. I love my new look and will return again! I'll also note that I was a bit nervous about going to a salon during the pandemic. Did Bishop's change ownership? I went in on a Sunday (which was probably my first mistake), and felt like I stepped in to a time warp. I had the pleasure of being reunited with the lovely sounds of Michael Bolton's Greatest Hits the entire time I was there. Now I am a woman of a certain age, and I can appreciate a little MB from time to time, no problem. All I came in for was a cut (blunt long), shampoo and a special conditioning treatment. I knew it wouldn't be cheap, because well, what is. My hair is barely trimmed at all and still has a ton of split ends. We even agreed in the mirror together how much to trim off. There was a language barrier, which could have also been another thing. I explained to the girl that I have been losing a ton of hair, and so after the wash she began round brushing and blow drying my hair straight from being soaking wet. I have never had a hair dresser do this before. I paid 159.00 and some change for a blow out essentially. I would not recommend this place for a chic short haircut. I asked for a blunt sitting-at-the-shoulder length cut and for my curtain bangs to transition out (inspo photo attached). My first red flag was that Rachel cut my hair dry, but I decided to trust the process. However, it looked crooked, so I asked her to wet my hair with the spray bottle and look again in case I want to straighten my hair. She did fix some things but the second round I was still not satisfied. I was too scared to ask her to fix it again and have it be shorter (it was above my shoulder now), so I left the salon.
