The service is overly-friendly and rushed. The food is generally the same in every CB out there so if you've eaten at one, there should be no surprises at any others. I got the build-your-own breakfast with eggs, sausage and plain hash browns. It's a reasonable price for what you get and easy to cook properly. Service was fast, food arrived ~10 mins later. It wasn't too noisy and we could actually talk without yelling. (I was there with 4 other people.) We got the check quickly, even before some of us finished eating, so it was a quick turnaround on the table. We wandered around the store and by the time we left, the restaurant was already crowded and had a wait list.

The servers are, for the most part, friendly and attentive. Management is great and pleasant to talk with. Even the restaurant is clean, for a buffet restaurant, and enjoyable to eat at. Their food is on point for temperature and flavor. However, tonight was different. On approach to the restaurant, my wife and I seen there was a banner of bragging rights about how this particular Golden Coral is the highest ranked buffet in the Catawba Valley. Well, sad to say I believe that these bragging rights are premature. Sunday is a normal busy day and night for buffets period. And I understand that the servers are diligently working so that they can make sure customers have a pleasant experience eating with family and friends, that they are wanting to secure the best tips possible to supplement their hourly pay- that is very understandable. But this Hickory, NC employs a serve by the name Kim that doesn't seem to get the concept of how to serve the customers. And being "busy" or "super busy" does not excuse piss poor service. After my wife and I sat down in this server's area, the row of booths next to the exit divider wall... the same row of booths right next to the manager's office entrance, Kim NEVER once introduced herself. Kim NEVER asked if there was anything that we needed. Kim NEVER even asked what we were drinking or if we wanted any refills. And obviously we were not the only customers that this Kim pissed off. There was another couple in the same section that was displeased with this Kim. My wife noticed the lady had placed her glass near the side of the table to be refilled. Kim obviously passed it by several times before she acknowledged the glass, tried to apologize, and asked if the lady would like a refill. The lady customer had one of those RBF from hades and the husband told GC server Kim: 'She doesn't now'. Now, most of you would agree with my wife about leaving nothing for a tip. However, back in the day when I worked places such as Wester Steer and O'Charley's the servers would pitch a fit for getting a lousy tip, such as $0.25 or even a penny, when they were found to be giving lousy service. They would often say that they would have preferred to have gotten nothin verses getting a quarter or even a penny. Had I tipped according to what what our dinner cost she would have had a tip between $6.50-$8.00, but on seeing Kim's performance I could not, in good conscience, bring myself to reward her for her lack of performance. So, I did leave this Kim with a whole $2.00 in tip and nothing more. Some how in all this busy chaos, Kim found the ability to take a dirty plate or two from our table- despite the fact that my wife had to stop Kim in the process just to ask for som A-1 Sauce. So, don't stop going to Golden Coral, they are after all the highest ranked buffet in the Catawba Valley. Just make sure that when you do go, just check with management, or even the serving staff, to see what section Server Kim is in so that you do not have to endure lousy service and feel like you have to waste your hard earn money to leave a tip for an unworthy server.
