Mamas, if you read any review about Birthing Your Way, I hope it is this one--not to deter anyone from making the choice to birth here, but so you can have a holistic view of what this facility offers--or more importantly, what it doesn't offer. I do not believe that Birthing Your Way offers a safe environment for the patients or the employees. I took a tour of Birthing Your Way a little while ago when we were deciding where to birth our second baby. Heather, while polite, was fairly distant with us and not particularly welcoming. While we were touring the facility, a woman who was quite obviously in advanced labor tried to check into the center--or her husband did, since the mother was distressed and seemingly in a lot of pain. Heather acted almost inconvenienced when this laboring mother showed up--she seemed flustered and unprepared. The other midwife quickly tried to rush us through the rest of the tour, giving us a contract sheet and inviting us to sign then if we felt like we liked the facility. We left without signing. I was also concerned with how Heather talked to the other employees at the facility. She was very short and impatient with them and seemed disorganized and frazzled. The midwife who gave us the tour mentioned that most midwives do not stay long at the birth center. When we asked why, she vaguely said that they just move on to other things since many of them are students. However, after observing Heather's behavior for just thirty minutes, I wonder if her leadership attitude and lack of warmth and kindness towards her patients and employees contributes to the turnover rates at Birthing Your Way. Mamas, you want a birthing environment that is welcoming, unhurried, and peaceful. Where you birth your baby matters. I am truly happy for those who had a positive experience here, and I hope that happens for the majority of women, but I implore you to think critically about what you see here before you make a decision. Real changes need to be made before this center can be considered a safe place to birth. read more

My wife and I have had two excellent birth experiences here with Heather. As a husband attending prenatal, birth, and postpartum appointments, I feel like I can ask all the questions I want and be as involved as I dare. The impressive resources that Heather has at her disposal allow her to handle tricky situations with ease, and her broad experience enables her to recognize and avoid problems early on. We truly felt that our two births with her were exactly what we wanted, and she made them happen how we wanted them to happen. She truly believes in birthing YOUR way! I appreciate the high standards of professionalism we see, especially when it comes to communication. Every time we are faced with a decision or Heather has a suggestion, she is clear about the pros and cons, the potential benefits and hazards, and what a certain course of action might entail or require. I recently gave birth for the second time with Heather at Birthing Your Way. I cannot recommend them enough! I have recommended them to all my sisters and friends--if you're interested in giving birth safely outside of a hospital setting, they are the ones for you! Birthing Your Way makes it possible to have an out-of-hospital birth even when your personal situation may not be considered ideal. I've learned that you don't have to give birth at the hospital "just in case" something happens. My first birth had some unexpected complications in the form of sudden severe hemorrhage. Heather and her team saved my life! Having a doctor on staff ended up being such a huge blessing that we wouldn't have had at another birth center. For my situation, they called in Dr. Baird to assist postpartum which helped me avoid a hospital transfer and all the complication and financial inconvenience that would have caused. They were absolute professionals and took awesome care of my family, making it possible for me to have the out-of-hospital birth I was looking for without sacrificing safety or quality care. I loved my experience birthing with them! With my second baby I returned to Birthing Your Way and I had an even better experience than my first time! Heather made a specific birth plan with me taking into account my history of hemorrhage, and thanks to the preventative care she gave I had a smooth delivery with no emergencies! Heather is such an awesome provider who really cares, and she's become such a great friend! If you have a goal, she will do whatever she can to make it happen--she cancelled plane tickets to be attend my birth herself even when the other midwife could have covered it. Heather was amazing with my unexpected complications, and things were even better when we could see them coming based on my medical history. Having a previous complication doesn't automatically disqualify you from having an out-of-hospital birth if you want it. Birthing Your Way gives you options and take great care of their clients! Any time you choose a provider, you're putting your trust in them and placing your health and safety in their hands. I'm so glad I chose Birthing Your Way! I chose this birthing center as a first-time mom with a desire for a natural childbirth. I had an absolutely incredible birthing experience here. I felt that my baby and I were very safe and not just cared for but loved and valued. I am grateful for all of Heather's knowledge, experience, and comforting reassurance throughout my pregnancy and birth. Dr. Baird, the other midwives, and the students were wonderful to work with as well. Decided to switch to a birthing center at 39 weeks and 3 days. They were absolutely amazing and my husband and I couldn't asked for a better 1st birth experience. I was able to execute my birth plan exactly how we imagined and wanted. I had Heather, Sarah, Erin, and Mandy helping me through it all. They were all so kind, patient, and just went above and beyond. I did also hire a doula who met us there and I loved having her there as part of the team too. Definitely worth the last minute switch and they got to know me within the couple days before my baby came! Would 100% go back. read more

My initial experience was good. I thought Heather was a good midwife for me in particular because of her knowledge on certain subjects. But at my first prenatal she couldn't find a heart beat with the doppler and dragged out an ultrasound machine. My baby wasn't moving. She proceeded to push on my belly and try to wake baby up. She finally said she saw the baby "breathing" and a little flicker that may have been the heartbeat. Looking back I don't know if she was telling the truth. To me it seemed like my baby wasn't moving at all. It was only a few days later that I had a miscarriage. I called Heather during my miscarriage and asked her to come check on me because I felt like I was losing a lot of blood. But she declined because she had a full schedule of clients. She said that I could come to her office. I was in no condition to make it into her office which is on the second floor so I decided to stay home. Thankfully my bleeding slowed way down an hour later. I called Heather back to let her know and she sounded relieved. She let me know that I should call her if I needed anything. And that was it. She didn't contact me. A month later I called to let her know that I was upset that she had never contacted me and that I didn't get the care that I needed and wanted during and after my miscarriage. She explained that I should have just called her and that she waits for her clients to call and doesn't "harass" them by calling. Just this week I called her to talk to Heather about one specific test result. Her office set up a phone appointment. I wasn't told until that appointment that it would cost $50. I felt annoyed because I had been told by Heather that I was welcome to call her anytime after my miscarriage. I didn't want to be nickel and dimed for just one question. So I declined and said goodbye. I'm requesting my test results and taking them somewhere else where I will be received with more compassion and have clear and honest communication. read more

I have given birth twice at Birthing Your Way. Both babies were born in the water which was a much better experience than my first child which was born in a hospital. Birthing Your Way also does Well Woman and Well Child checkups so it's nice to get everyone taken care of at the same place/time. read more

I can't say enough good things about Birthing Your Way! I loved my prenatal care, I always felt comfortable asking tons of questions during my pregnancy. The midwives were caring and attentive and had great recommendations. They supported my decisions and preferences like choosing not to ultrasound and using a fetascope instead of a Doppler. During my labor and birthing time they were supportive, relaxed, non-invasive, and completely encouraging and helpful. Due to their help, I didn't tear or hemorrhage and I had an amazing birth experience. My sons birth was one of the highlights of my life and I'm so glad I chose Birthing Your Way. After birth, the midwives took excellent care of me, cleaned me up, helped me breastfeed my baby, kept my husband and I fed, never rushed us, and were so kind. If you're looking for an awesome birth staff and birth environment, I'd highly recommend Birthing Your Way. Note-- Before choosing Birthing Your Way, I'd seen a few really negative reviews online which made a little nervous. After my experience, I'd say something I really loved about the midwives is that they are honest. If you want or don't want something, you need to tell them directly. If you communicate with them and don't assume anything, you'll have a great experience. They totally want to support you, but you have to do your part and communicate assertively. I have not yet given birth here but my experience so far has been amazing. They really are so caring about what you want and allow you to make the choices you want to as a mother. I ask a million questions as this is my first baby and have never felt put down even if it was a stupid question. (Unlike my first couple checkups with a regular OB who made me feel like I was being annoying and was rushing to get me out) Also, I'm not ever worried about getting in touch if I need. I can text, call and if anything is happening they work with me to get into the office. You have communication open to you 24/7. Such an amazing experience so far and I am really happy we chose this birthing center! read more

I can not recommend Birthing Your Way enough. Heather is an absolutely amazing midwife. She listens to her clients, gives feedback and is willing to support them in their decisions and make sure their birth is an empowering experience. This is a rare find in a midwife. If issues arise she is more than equipped to handle them quickly in a calm fashion. So many midwives are not prepared when it comes to handing complications and Heather is. The facility is beautiful and the post partum care is so helpful for moms, especially the home visits! read more

I originally chose this birth center because they had a trained medical professional, Teresa, on staff and I was attempting a VBAC. I made an appointment and when I arrived, it was chaos. There was no organization and they failed to remember my time for my tour. They often forgot payment during my pregnancy, and were behind or forgot appointments. Halfway through my pregnancy, Teresa left, and that should have been another red flag. During my very long birth, they (Heather, Hannah, and other staff I didn't recognize that were probably midwives in training) grew bored and started cleaning out their basement in their Provo birth center. I could hear them hammering downstairs through my contractions. After sixteen hours of labor, I was ready to deliver, and it was already evening. They really had to help me get the baby out, and I was so swollen, I tore. I was hemorrhaging and my placenta was coming out in pieces. I lost so much blood, my husband's pants, socks and shoes were soaked. Heather got an IV in me because she knew it would help keep me from shock from blood loss. As Heather attempted to clean up to determine the severity of the tearing, she took a long time, muttering, "Can I do this? Can I do this?" and then finally, "I can do this..." with no surety in her voice, as if convincing herself before stitching me for the next 45 minutes or so. This was my first vaginal birth, so I had no idea that this was also a bad sign. Instead of getting me to a hospital for a blood transfusion, they had me drink a glass of water with liquid chlorophyll in it--calling it "plant blood" that would help me with all the blood I had lost. Within a few minutes, every single person with even marginal medical training departed the birthing center, leaving me with only a young CNA to recover for a mere 2 hours before requesting that me, my husband, and our new baby please leave, and sending us into the cold night air at 2:30 AM. I really didn't know enough to realize how bad this experience was. It took four to six months for me to feel normal again, and sitting down without a doughnut pillow (that they didn't provide, knowing my injuries) was extremely painful. I experienced varying levels of incontinence for three years before I was examined by an OBGYN who confirmed that I had had FOURTH DEGREE TEARING because of that birth. He was appalled that I was sent home and never got a blood transfusion, and that a midwife would attempt to sew a fourth degree tear. I have already consulted a few doctors, but they doubt I have any case against their medical neglect, so this review is written as a warning, and not by someone who has "sued their pants off" or anything. I have since had to have reconstructive surgery and physical therapy for my birth, and am pain-free and healthy again. I did get the unmedicated VBAC I wanted, technically. And the staff technically kept my baby and me alive. I can only assume that their reasoning for not sending me to the hospital (four minutes up the road) was because they didn't want their transport rates to increase. I have suffered for their decision, whatever their motive was. I still--to this day--support women being free to choose their birth option, but I also believe that we should learn lessons from my experience: some midwives are trained for birth, but may be poor business owners. Some midwives have ulterior motives, too, just as hospitals or doctors or other staff do--their motives include maintaining low transport rates for future business. Some midwives do not have the resources to care for you in a particularly dangerous situation long term. The after-care and risks of post-birth is left to you. I hope my review leaves you better informed. A midwife birth can be a wonderful thing, but there are much better options than the disorganized, self-concerned, and dangerous practices of Birthing Your Way. read more

This center was so forgetful, disorganized, inadequate, unreliable, and rushed. The leading midwife/owner--Shelley was deceptive at times, not giving the whole story or making things sound better than they were. She didn't have her priorities straight, was disrespectful, even yelled at me at one point, and a lot of her policies look very suspicious in hindsight. I would tell the whole story but due to space constraints I can't. I'm focusing mostly on omitted things I never had space to tell. If you'd like more details you can find them on other rating sites. It's not unusual for them to make claims without backing them up. Shelley is not with DONA anymore for instance, and Ms. Greenlee claims to be a LC and CB educator, but she never says with who, but even if she is she's way overstating her skills, only IBCLCs can diagnose complex issues and they'll often do it for less. By not being referred out of center I wasn't told that my boy had a birth injury that inhibited sucking, plus a lip defect. Nearly a day after birth with no nursing success they started finally caring about him being fed: unacceptable. They dispatched a student who had no training. She offered some frozen breastmilk, donated by someone in the postpartum group (this wasn't a screened donation) she was unaware of any precautions taken, and it was way past storing recommendations. When they finally fixed their pump (this would have been noticed earlier had Shelley not run off after stitches), she turned it to the rip your nipples off setting and kept reminding me that I could pay extra for their amateur counseling services; they even charge for their nursing support club (LLL and BFUSA are free and high quality). Funny, everyone was made to buy a completely unnecessary product to stop contractions after birth from Sunstone Formula (which is run by someone who left BYW--did they work out a deal?), but they see nursing, which aids in natural recovery, as a luxury. Speaking of missing benefits, their offers (and policies) seem to change every few months. Sometimes they are advertising things on their site that would have been great when I was there, only to have it be unavailable due to staff changes just months later. Just within the past 5 years Shelley's partnered with at least 4 different midwives, 3 different doulas, and completely new office staff--what is going on? Then there's student care, which is the bulk of care and very subpar. Students skimmed my birth plan, forgot my request to only use the ultrasound heart monitor when necessary (I only got to use the safer fetalscope once), probably gave him the vitamin K shot twice, forgot policies and resources, threw out the placenta when they knew I wanted to see it, and treated me like a child. It was up to me to say who I didn't want at my son's birth--but one is barely able to sort out or judge the students; constant changes make names hard to track. I kept being cornered by the doula to use her for not just birth but prenatal guidance; she talked to Shelley and they both agreed that I asked too many questions and that I'd probably fail if I didn't hire her. When I told Shelley that I did not want to use cervical checks (more midwives now favor not pushing) she wasn't listening and kept assuming I was abused or something. Another outrageous delgation: during labor, not only did she require two cervical checks, she asked if my husband would like to do it. I was appalled that she would just hand over this job to someone untrained--even leaving him in charge of some drug concoctions, while leaving the room as often as possible. She cut corners a lot, stopped showing up for most prenatals, tried to get me to take products to make labor come faster and sooner (well before the deadline), then tried to ignore me when I tried to confirm I was in labor. Then she tried to make me birth as fast as possible making threats, forcibly ripped out my placenta which could lead to future placenta previa, rushed through stitches (it was a complicated tear and I don't think I healed well, but later since I said it was itchy she said oh good it must have healed, and cut postpartum care short to 2 weeks instead of 6). After 1 hour of sleep (it's 6 hours from birth, not after the hours of procedures are done) I was expelled. If I didn't qualify for more time, who did? Shelley broke a lot of NARM's rules like refusing to tell me what was in drugs, and not giving me a waiver for medically unnecessary routine procedures--like scheduled catheter use. She would have lost her license had it not been for the short window (I didn't look into DOPL--way too many hoops); the most NARM was able to do at this point was issue a peer-review warning. Some red flags: instead of doing credit checks or having insurance requirements, they have you pay in full before the birth. Their postpartum community is invite-only and has attacked me online before; I fully expect a sudden surge of reviews. read more

My attempt to give birth here was nothing short of traumatic. On the day prior to the birth of our son, we came in for an appointment. Everything was fine. We returned later that evening, well into the beginning stages of labor. After a very brief consultation, we were told we'd need to leave as per their policy of having mothers wait until they've "progressed far enough" to labor at the center. My husband, our private doula and I waited nearby, certain that we'd be invited back anytime. As my labor progressed, I strong feeling of anxiety arose. This was my third child. We were told on numerous occasions how quickly labor would become delivery for a third time mom and told stories of children being born on their doorsteps. I believe it. We called again, and again we were turned away because, to them, my labor had not progressed enough for it to be worth their time. Dejected, my husband drove us home. We spent two agonizing hours waiting, haunted by the feeling that the people we had trusted to deliver our child were not concerned about us at all. Again, we called. And again, we were told to wait. Things had reached a point where I could no longer wait. I needed help. We drove to a nearby hospital. On the way, my husband called to inform them. Only then did they respond, offering to allow us to come in. But it was too late for that. I wasn't willing to go there and risk being told to leave again. Within an hour of arriving at the hospital, I had given birth. No pitocin, no manual manipulation. My body was ready. BYW was not. The hospital staff were excellent; I felt cared for, and that was what I needed most. Several weeks after our son was born, I reached out to BYW to get a refund on the payment I had made for delivery. We were told that our insurance would cover everything except a $750 facility fee, which we had paid in full. The financial person there, who was extremely difficult to get ahold of and never returned our voicemails, eventually answered the phone several weeks later. She told us that they were still attempting to bill our insurance and that once that had been cleared up, our refund would be sent. After 3 months of waiting, trying numerous times in between to contact her again, we finally got ahold of another staff member that told us they had fired that woman and midwife, Shelley, would handle the issue personally. She waited a week to tell us that they would not issue a refund because the 15 minute exam they did the day before birth counted as use of the facility. The same facility they wouldn't let us use. In hindsight, we realized how terrible of a business this place actually is. Most of their shortcomings throughout my pregnancy, from the incompetent, ever-changing array of poorly trained staff who all had their own unique views and advice, to the midwife who told me not to eat carbs despite my bloodwork showing I did not have gestational diabetes, were easy to overlook because we were sure, so sure, that this was going to work out well in the end and we would have the birth we wanted. We did not and instead had a horrible experience. And in the end, the staff cared nothing of this. They simply wanted their money. read more

I have used Birthing Your Way for two of my babies now, and I have loved both experiences. I trust Heather with my life, and the lives of my babies, no questions asked. She and her staff are friendly, easy to talk to, and nice to be around. There is a warm and inviting spirit that surrounds Heather and I am always comfortable around her. I've had two babies here, the first at the original Pleasant Grove location that has now moved to Lehi, and my second at the new Lehi location. I have visited the Provo location also which I found to be fantastic as well. In Lehi I had access to prenatal massage, prenatal chiropractic, and even prenatal counseling and classes. The resources on natural birth, birthing classes, alternative birthing methods and coaching, doulas, placenta encapsulation and so much more are all clearly displayed and informed on. I also enjoyed the Kangaroo Mama shop on the main level that offered alternative care products, including Kyani and It Works products with out a membership or having to attend a high pressure sales party. I had water births with both babies which is not allowed in hospitals but was the BEST part of giving birth for me because lets face it folks, who doesn't enjoy a nice warm bath on a normal day? Made labor so much more relaxing and less painful and dare I say without being hooked up to needles and machines, restricted to my bed. Best thing I have ever done for myself, my family and my babies. My husband and family members were all allowed to be active coaches in my labor, my husband caught my son and my sister cut the cord! AMAZING! Hands down wouldn't have it any other way, couldn't imagine any other way for me. read more

I just wanted to share my wonderful experience I had at birthing your way. I had always wanted a beautiful home birth and that is what I got because of the awesome midwives there. I didn't have my baby at home because I loved the birth room at the birth center! It was so relaxing well, as relaxing as you can be durning labor :) The peaceful atmosphere of the birth room really helped durning labor. The midwives were really knowledgable and very caring during my whole pregnancy and during the birth. I would recommend Birthing Your Way to anyone! read more

Most of all I felt like someone listened to what I wanted ( and didn't want) and tried to follow that as long as both of us were still safe.
