My friend introduced me to this store when I was looking for some White Day chocolates, and I wanted something more than just the conventional Ferrero Rocher chocolate box from the store. I was amazed by the care and service of this local business! The owner is a super sweet man who is always there to lend a helping hand with the chocolate recommendations if you are looking to buy a special present for someone. If you happen to be buying a selection of chocolate, maybe you will be lucky enough to sample one of their chocolates right there Their entrance is a side door off of Madison Ave. It is not labeled, but don't be afraid to give it a turn and go right in! You should hear a bell chime in the back when you head in, so if you don't, give the door another open to make sure they know they have a customer. Their Gianduja chocolate has such a lasting and aromatic hazelnut flavor, I definitely recommend getting a piece in the next box of chocolate you buy. They also have plenty of deals during different holidays in the year. I highly recommend Birnn Chocolate for any occasion, as a thank you gift or a just because gift for someone special. I started going to this chocolate shop a few years ago. When I had to start doing physical therapy as it was located next to my physical therapy office. I had passed by it once or twice before and thought it was just a factory. But being that I had started coming in the area twice a week. I decided to park and peek in. The shop on the inside is very nice and clean. They have nice display cases displaying all the different chocolates they make. The gentleman who makes the chocolates is super nice and very friendly. I've had multiple conversations with him about his chocolate. From what I remember, they use more cocoa and less sugar similar to a European chocolate over an American chocolate. I would say there was probably a while where I was coming in and buying a half pound every week. I think my favorites have to be the turtles, the non-parels, and the truffles. I know they also have an online store, so if you are not local you could always order from online. However, if you are local it is worth stopping in. They are only open Wednesdays through Saturdays and they close around 5: 00. read more

This gem is located in a peaceful residential neighbourhood instead of a noisy business district. Please don't be doubtful when you are driving on Cleveland ave-- you are on the right track! The store itself is a low-key small house with little decoration inside and out. You may hear the bell ringing while entering the store but see nobody at the storefront. Please don't be discouraged as I guarantee you that the owner will come from the manufacturing hall and greet you warmly. The price is very reasonable, more affordable than big brands such as Godiva. You will love the chocolates you purchased from the store. If you choose to buy a gift box for your beloved ones, it will be beautifully wrapped and handed to you with elegance, then loved by its recipient. You will be nostalgic for your experience at this modest yet charming little store. Please come to buy your family, friends or yourself a treat. Tucked back in the woods of Highland Park are nonpareils without parallel, a dozen varieties of bark (the chocolate kind) and my particular favorite the dark chocolate covered graham cracker. I used to get chocolate from Birnn in my Easter basket as a child. I remembered it tasting exceptionally delicious. A few years ago I decided to drive over to Birnn as an adult and buy a chocolate rabbit for Easter. I've eaten chocolate from all over the world, from expensive to cheap drugstore quality. Birnn's chocolates are a true delight! For the last 15 years I have made a visit before the holidays to purchase treats for all my family. If I show up without those wonderful little boxes of deliciousness I know I'm going to hear about it! We all have our favorites. The dark chocolate covered caramels are to die for. There are truffles, turtles and chocolate covered pretzels, chips, and even Oreos... if you want sugar free there are options there too. While the chocolate is expensive it is also very fresh and delicious. If you prefer milk chocolate there is that option, although the health benefits of dark chocolate just give me one more reason to stick with that. When you visit the shop you can ask for a sample of one piece if you want to expand your taste horizons. The staff are efficient and helpful and they will wrap those boxes of yumminess to save you the trouble. For me that's worth a great deal!! read more

Ahh, Birnn's Candy Store. My mom worked in the Newbrunswick store during the 60's.I loved that store! It was so clean and beautiful. The candy was awesome! We lived in South River at the time, I had just met Bill Birnn 2 weeks before we moved to Pa. He was a sweetheart. Bought the hollow chocolate Easter Bunny, as I did past years. The price is now VERY expensive - $37 for 1.19 lb. Worse then that, the chocolate does not taste the same. It is definitely missing the traditional smell and taste. Big disappointment. read more

It's Highland Park's treasure: a little chocolate factory/store tucked into a mostly residential section. I grew up very close to Birnn, and my mother would give me and my friends a dollar each to get a little white bag of candy. "A dollar's worth of chocolate break-up, please!" Just enough to eat on the walk home. Even though we were only spending a dollar, Bill Birnn was so kind to us that we might as well have been spending $100. Birnn has delicious milk and dark chocolates--truffles, turtles, bark, caramels, chocolate-covered graham crackers, mints, and whatever else you can think of, all made right there, except maybe the truffles, which I believe are made in their Vermont location, where the Birnn brothers are now based. The people who work there are also extremely friendly, and they even give you a free piece of chocolate of your choice, just for buying something. (If you resist, they'll tempt you with, "Come on! You gotta try something!") Even if you don't live near Highland Park, Birnn is totally worth the trip, and worth the cost. read more

I just ordered a box of mixed dark and light cashew turtles. I hadn't tasted a Birnn Chocolate since I moved from New Jersey in the 60s! But memories of the delicious chocolate came back immediately when a friend recently brought me a box. I didn't even realize the Birnn chocolate factory was still open. Anyway, the dark chocolate is delicious and the cashews are huge, fresh, and crunchy. I wouldn't mind having a bit more caramel in the turtle, but what's there is excellent and not too sweet. All in all, the cashew turtles are awesome and not to be missed. Except maybe on the Birnn Chocolate website which, for some reason, doesn't include a photo of the cashew turtle. read more
