Stopped by to check out the candy selection here. This is a factory store and very large and has a huge selection of candy and treats. Some of the candy is "older" and they are selling at a discount - but trust me the discount isn't much! It's fun to walk around the store and grab a sample. But believe me, no matter what delicious treats you take home, you will spend a lot of money! This isn't an candy store that I would go to on a regular basis, but it was fun to walk around. Plenty of parking, nice people and the sugar rush is a plus. read more

I love Gertrude Hawk Chocolates! I'm a rewards member and have been able to use the benefit many times. This store charged me 10 cents for a bag. Are they serious! It's not the money because 10 cents is not going to break me, it's the idea. A rewards member that spends lots of money in the store could not be given a free bag. Then to add to my displeasure, the six candy apples I purchased did not fit in the bag and I had to carry one anyway. read more

The chocolates are pricey compared to other specialty chocolate places that have more variety and options. The smidgens taste nice and they have plenty on discount at the back. The woman who works in there needs some definite service training. It was awkward right from the start when she glanced at me as I walked in and I smiled and said hello and in return she not only didn't greet me back, but she literally turned her head away and pretended to fiddle with something. I'm surprised by all the negative reviews! Maybe things have changed more recently. I like that they aren't all over you the second you walk in, just a simple hello & anyone who has ever rung me up has been perfectly fine! I try not to come here too often bc SUGAR but I love their chocolate! If you head to the back, all of the chocolate is discounted (50% ish). My fav is still their chocolate filled with peanut butter, its so creamy! Have liked their hazelnut, raspberry and dark as well. I usually buy a little bag (factory extras) or a box of smidgens or in chocolate bar form. I wouldn't worry too much if you're buying from a previous season, I feel like the chocolate lasts a while. read more

The women in there are so rude! It's clear none of them want to work there and if you ask something they get annoyed quickly. If I didn't like these chocolates so much I would've been left! The worse customer service especially on a holiday. The women hate their job there. For people waiting outside for an hour in the front door they decided to open the side door and not even the front door. Had to stand in the back of a long time and all the employee said well just order it next year so you don't wait. Definitely not going there next year. read more

Great location with friendly staff. Lots of selection and always a ton of things on sale! Free samples :-). They make chocolate covered strawberries fresh to order as well as apples, potato chips, etc. There is plenty of free parking. read more

I love having Gertrude Hawk within drivable distance! I have always been treated professionally in this location. In fact, I was looking for a nice baby shower item for my daughter-in-law's baby shower. The lady helped me select a blue (white) chocolate covered apple; they offered to add little blue bows on top. I made up little labels and added them to the wrapped apples. These were a big hit with the guests! Their chocolate dipped potato chips are AMAZING! Love having the sale/clearance items in the back. Store is very clean; people are great; sufficient parking. It's all good! Don't be put off by some comments; it's a great place to shop and whether you buy the items for yourself or as gifts, it will be enjoyed! read more

Unkind and sarcastic -- that's how I'd describe their service. I go in about 30 minutes before they close to buy fudge. I ask one simple question, and the woman working behind the counter gives me a sarcastic answer that wasn't necessary. Was going to buy smidgens online, but their shipping is too high. So being in the Plainfield area for the day I had to make a stop. Sooo much chocolate and smidgen selections inside. From seasonal chocolate, to past holiday sale items in the back, its a chocolate lovers dream. They were still selling Christmas and Easter stuff for a deep discount and the expiration dates were still good. I got a bunch of peanut butter smidgens for only $4 a box. Lots of other selections as well, with friendly staff and free samples. Very clean place too, it was spotless. read more

Lost us as a customer. - Yes, I loved their chocolates but they lost us as a customer forever. My husband takes the hour drive to/fro Gertrude Hawks every Valentine's Day. This past Friday, after not finding the hours on their website, he phoned at 7:30a expecting to get a voicemail with hours. Instead, the owner/manager/whomever picks up the phone and rudely says, "What!" My husband apologizes thinking he must have accidentally mis-dialed. The person on the line says that it was the store but demanded to know why he was calling so early and what was wrong with him. Seriously? What happened to common courtesy...especially in a sales role? Oh well...the chocolates not good enough to be treated rudely. Maybe it's time for them to retire. read more

Ms. Murray and her staff at the No. Plainfield store are extremely nice: I called to see if they had any treats for graduation, Ms. Murray suggested the rice crispy treats covered in chocolate, She made they up special since I needed them the next day, even though I should have called in advance. She even called me at 7:30 tat evening to tell me they were ready .. She really went above and beyond to make it happen.. Thank you for adding that special touch to my son's graduation... read more

Went in for an advent calendar and a few other things, hands down they have good chocolate, not the best, but it's up there. Problem I had was the customer service. I asked the women who was minding the counter, "Do you have Advent calendars ?", with her smug look, she points and says "They're over there, if there are any left !" I was like "well ok then, smartass." Then I asked do you have candy apples, once again I get the point to the corner, "Over there". I said "yes I see the chocolate and caramel apples, but do you have the red candy apples ?", she comes back at me with "We don't make them, we never did", I says "Wow, I figured you have every other candy on earth here, I thought you would have them", she reply's "You know how hot that candy gets to make them !" YEAH AND, Your a frigen candy shop, doesn't chocolate become hot when you mold it too. So needless to say I won't be back, hopefully the Woodbridge location has better service. read more

The Gertrude chocolate is definitely an amazing experience and this store has Gertrude from floor to ceiling. The chocolate is not the problem. I was just going to leave it alone but an additional occurrence brought this on. Last week my girlfriend and I just made it before close but we still had like 15 minutes, we walked in the door with smiles and were met with looks of disgust. Jokingly we said to the two lifeless specimens behind the counter that we would have had withdrawals if we didn't make it. That was a joke!!!! One of them says well what do you want cause we are closing. WHOA Soldier!!!! Today I walk in and was welcomed with a good afternoon can I help you, oh ok the rudeness was just an off day. I would like a caramel apple with peanuts please........Well do you want it with just caramel and peanuts, in this wise ass disgusted voice. Um what? YES!!!! I believe I said that quite clear, but I wasn't mean I just said yes with caramel and peanuts. She then says well if you just want Caramel and peanuts I have to get it for you but if you want caramel chocolate and peanuts you get it, it's right there. NASTY ATTITUDE!!! I know you have to get it for me that's why when you asked me what I wanted I told you Caramel apple with peanuts. Walk over to your little fridge and get me the damn apple. Every time I walk in with a smile and leave wanting to go to the gym and work on a hard bag.
