BEST BIRD STORE IN NEW JERSEY I visited Birds by Joe for the first time about a year ago and was impressed with the store, the staff and of course, Joe. Joe has an amazing selection of beautiful birds (see more here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJk1fYhzQTw), tons of toys, high quality bird food and treats. However, what really makes Birds by Joe special is their love for birds and their outstanding customer service. Today I noticed that my baby, Dino, was bleeding because his identification ring was too tight on his foot. What can I say? Dino is a big boy! I reached out to a local animal hospital, and they said their bird specialist was not going to be in until Sunday and recommended that I take Dino to Birds by Joe! When I came to the store, Joe and the staff took the ring out in under 30 minutes. They truly love birds and all they want to do is help them. I would give this place zero stars. I drove 2 hours to purchase a bird. The place is filthy, and the birds look sickly. The kid running the place obviously takes no pride in his parent's store. I question his knowledge on birds. He just sat perched (no pun intended) at the counter sucking on a lollipop - very professional (not). This was the Greenbrook location. There is a Birds By Joe 2 in Saddlebrook. The 2 stores are night and day. Birds By Joe 2 is run by a nice lady, store is spotless and well organized. I bought what I was told was a 5 month old baby Parrotlet along with all the fixings - food, toys, perches. His beak was a bit wonky, but she said she'd fix it. Ok. I went back a month later to get more food and have a clipping. I even brought my other bird for grooming as well. I spent a lot of money once again on treats and toys. About 3 months into having him, he started losing coordination and falling off the perches, couldn't climb, and just sat on the bottom of the cage. I immediately took him to the vet (which cost me more than what I paid for the bird) thinking it was a calcium deficiency. It turned out the beak thing is a sign of liver disease, and the bird is old bird because babies don't show signs of it that early. If you look online, there are plenty of examples. #1 if you are in the bird business you should know what that disfigured beak is a sign of and not take if from the breeder if it was presented that way (they would be scamming her) #2 she should provide hatch dates or ask her breeder for hatch dates (so she doesn't get scammed) - I was told it was a baby and now I know to ask for a hatch date and the paperwork. #3 if you know the beak is a sign of liver disease (which will eventually kill the bird) how dare you sell it and make it someone else's problem. I don't know who lied to who, but I was lied to one way or another. I was sold a sick bird that this woman may or may not have known about, and if she didn't, she should have known as this is her business, and not sold me the bird; there were plenty of others I could have taken, and it's not like liver disease is contagious. On top of it all, she did a crappy job of grooming both of my birds, and drew blood more that she should have ( I know it happens). I know how to do it, and do a better job myself, I just figured I let her do. All I know is am never setting foot in either store again. I am a very loyal customer, would have driven the hours it takes for me to get there, and buy all my stuff there if this had not happened. You don't lie to me. Now have to take care of a sick bird with medications and vet bills. I can't take it back for him to sit in a crowded cage and just be sold to someone else who doesn't know any better. It's been too long, and that bird loves my boyfriend; I can't do that to the little guy. read more

The reason for my rating is simple. While shopping for a Jendayi Conure I was quoted ridiculously high prices on a group in a cage. Multiple things became extremely obvious. The birds were super friendly. However my first choice became a significant offensive sellers beckoning not to purchase the bird. First they "warned me" in multiple deceitful ways the bird was not really a good idea. First they he said The bird refuses to eat and is on formula. Okay I would return after it's weaned. Once it is weaned it's behavior would be significantly different and I have no idea what I would be getting". Now I was certain he wanted me to move on from this choice. It was by far the most appealing bird in the group. His urging became so overwhelmingly offensive and disgusting! I was still going to purchase it in spite of the behavior. It was for after all for my teenage daughter. Now the clincher and ultimate slap in the face. This birds price changed about forty percent. I was definitely outraged and wanted to walk out and give the person a tongue lashing well overdue! With significant regrets and outrage I decided to purchase a different one. I should have walked out and told the sellers son, I am not an idiot, and you're a manipulative moronic individual deserving absolutely none of my respect. Thank goodness for Yelp. Coincidentally this is my first such response. It is warranted, and I hope for all of the animals in the store they are able to escape such horrific representation! I will leave you with this last observation that left me speechless and in a haste to exit before I spoke out vehemently and with more vigor then this individual had the right for me ever to be so emotionally invested in. IYou can tell just by walking into the place it has high standards of business and care for exotic birds, he's obviously been doing this a long time and is without a doubt the most experienced I have dealt with. I recently housed my parrot with Joe for over 3 months / I was nervous to leave her but WOW Joe took such great care of our parrot and was so thoughtful along the way sending us updates etc. This will now be our go to place for any and everything going forward. Lemme start off by saying... if you want to buy a bird, avoid this store. Go to Bird House in East Brunswick instead! Better customer service and their birds are waaaaay healthier. If I could rate this place zero stars, I would. We got a baby bird a couple months ago and he seemed kind of sick when we brought him home. He was weak and not well taken care of. Me and my boyfriend both knew exactly what we had to take of car of him, how to feed everything since we had birds before. After a couple weeks, the bird stopped eating very well, wasn't crying for food and was losing weight drastically. Eventually that bird, Pebbles, ended up passing away sadly. We thought maybe he just caught something but it was so sudden. That was until we got another birds from the same shop. It looked very weak when we got it but it was the only kind and color we wanted that they had. After 2 days, this bird also stopped eating and looked very rough. We did everything we could to help and ended up calling birds by joe to see if we could have them nurse him back to health. The owner there is very very rude, we were not blaming anything on him or the store, but he kept saying "the bird wasn't like that when he left here" even though he really was... he kept trying to make us feel guilty and blame us for "making the bird sick" when in reality the whole time we had him, we were trying to make him healthier than what he was like at joes store. Ridiculous. That is a terrible was to talk to your customers. Plus, it doesn't look like they clean very often the cages are dirty and the birds are cooped up all together with no room to move in their cages. Nasty and abusive to the birds. If you want a good quality bird that is healthy and happy and raised very well, I recommend going to Bird House in East Brunswick. Their birds are 250-300 compared to Joe's 350 (for the cockatiels specifically) and the customer service is 10 times better. The birds we got from bird house are so healthy and happy right now!! After researching bird breeders near me, I settled on Birds by Joe. Joe was there almost immediately to answer my questions. He was very honest about one issue, which was to my advantage, not his. This meant a lot to me. He showed me his canaries and I immediately saw one I knew was healthy. However, when I asked if he could sing, Joe was at a loss because all the canaries were in one big cage which precluded identifying a singer. Joe offered to switch him out if he didn't sing. He does sing and sing and sing. He is a wonderful bird. I walked by the cockatiels and one baby came begging at me and I immediately fell in love. He came home with me. There was a problem in that the breeder did not insure that this little guy was totally weaned and I did not realize this until the poor bird lost a lot of weight during the first week. I spent three full days on the floor with the baby in a baking dish and seeds scattered everywhere. He ate and ate and ate. This was actually not Joe's fault as the baby found the food dish and pooped, but had not learned to forage in the food dish. He is now a she and she is a wonderful little gal, very affectionate (as much as birds can be affectionate). She, too, is a wonderful bird. I would give Joe five stars except for the issues identified above. Canaries should be in separate cages with a marking identifying them as sure singers. The baby cockatiel's problem was not Joe's fault as cockatiels are typically kept in a single cage and so he would not have known this baby was not eating enough. Bottom line, I have two absolutely wonderful, healthy birds that I love to the moon and back. read more

My boys wanted chickens.... I didn't want the responsiblity, so we got a cockatiel instead. We are first time bird owners and every bit of advice has been by Joe, his wife or the staff. They have been amazing. Joe suggested to socialize with our bird while he was being hand feed. So we vistied him almost every day for 2 months. Let me tell you this is the friendlest bird ever! He goes to everyone and is (mostly happy) :))) I went in yesterday to get nails cut & wings clipped & told Joe my bird wouldn't eat his chop. He gave me some suggestions & it worked!!! There was also a couple of RUDE customers yelling F-bombs at Joe (in front of my kids) that he wouldn't sell her birds that other customers already put a deposit on. She was NUTS! Hope she doesn't come back as we go there often just to see all the other birds. All the birds are well taken care of, there is always someone cleaning cages or feeding the birds. They hand feed all the birds and will NOT give you the bird until it's ready to eat on it's own. Highly recommend Birds by Joe!! :) read more

I went to Birds By Joe recently because of recommendation by a friend. He bought a bird there and spoke very highly about the store. The store has a front section that primarily displays food, toys and accessories of which they have a good selection. The back room has a large assortment of birds. The person that served me (I believe it was Joe himself) was very friendly. I was however taken somewhat aback by the bird room. The room seemed to be overcrowded and had a pungent odor. Birds being boarded were next to birds for sale. I think with a little effort the bird room could be better organized and if the boarders where kept apart and away from the public the store could become outstanding. I will visit again and see if my first impression was correct or if Bird By Joe is better than I thought. read more

I have never owned a bird before and did my research before coming to see Joe. I wanted a budgie initially but was open-minded to other birds as long as they weren't too big. Joe helped me find the perfect fit for me. I ended up getting a canary-winged parrotlet which is bigger than a budgie (I don't want to hurt my first bird!) but smaller than some of other birds and parrots. My little guy seems happy and healthy and has a BIG personality. Joe's shop had the perfect cage, and he ordered me a stand (no instructions) and was nice enough to text me what the final product should look like for me to assemble mine. He has lots of nutritious food and fun toys in the store as well. He was more than happy to answer questions when I call (I am a first time owner!). Overall, a great experience! When asking the woman who worked there if it's possible she had a disease, she responded "all our birds are sick". Well that's 100% true because our cockatiel just tested positive for borna virus. I have to say... I was more than pleased with doing business with Joe! This was the first online pet order I have ever made and I live in Colorado and never have been to Joe's bird shop in New Jersey or New Jersey for that matter. I did my research and checked out all of the reviews and decided to call Joe about 3 months ago asking about an African Grey baby parrot that he had that just hatched. I put a pet deposit down that day and waited 3 more months for my bird to be weaned as sent off. I received my beautiful male Grey 6 days ago. I was more than pleased and the bird looked way better at 12 weeks old than any other Congo African Grey that I saw on the internet and in local pet stores. Joe was very honest and kept his word with me from the first time we spoke to the very end about getting me a good looking male bird with DNA and everything. I mostly talked to Joe through e-mails and he not only kept his word on giving me a very loving healthy Congo African Grey, he also made the shipment process very easy and the bird was picked up at Denver International in flawless condition. My Grey 'Carlos' is so tame and is so easy to deal with. Hes a smarty pants as well! If you live across the country and want a quality bird or live anywhere for that matter and want a quality bird and want to get your moneys worth with no questions asked, definitely buy from Birds By Joe!!! We purchased our Congo African Gray, who we named Murphy Gray, from Joe and were beyond pleased. My wife has had birds for years and if there was any issue with the birds, cages, feed, cleanliness, etc. she would have noticed it. I don't know what several of the reviewers were referring to as we found this to be a very reputable bird store. The owner is knowledgeable and extremely customer oriented. They have a great supply of foods, cages, toys and ancillary items that anyone owning a bird would need. Joe is dedicated to his craft and the health and care of his birds. We have two grays and will not hesitate to continue to get all our bird needs from Joe. read more

BUYERS BEWARE--I WAS SOLD A SICK BIRD!!! "If I gave everyone a refund when their bird had problems, I'd have no money!" -Joe, owner of the store. If you make the mistake of buying a bird from this poor excuse of an establishment, know you're on your own after you hand over that money with no exceptions, good luck! Despite my better judgment, I chose to buy a cockatiel from Joe for $200 because although the store was filthy and depressing, they had the best reviews out of all the bird stores in my area. I noticed from the second day that the bird looked ill, and upon the eighth she was dead. My entire family was heartbroken that such a sweet little bird had passed on out of no where. When I confronted him about the bird being unfit for sale and how our money was wasted, he replied with, "So what? It's not like it's 20,000 dollars." We asked if whether getting an autopsy to prove something was wrong with the bird from the beginning would warrant a refund or replacement, to which he responded with, "An autopsy wouldn't get you a refund or exchange no matter what was found. I don't give out free birds." He openly admitted that he does not test his birds for any sicknesses because he "trusts" all his birds are healthy. If that were true, his warranty wouldn't be specifically designed to, in the words of my veterinarian, "cover his butt." It only allows three days from the purchase to got to a vet and determine whether the animal was fit for sale or not, which does NOT give enough time to schedule an appointment or preform proper diagnostic testing even if the owner chose to pursue it (not to mention birds are known for hiding all physical symptoms until it is too late for recovery). I suspect poor reviews are being deleted, because from what I saw none of these positive reviews are warranted. The place is dirty, the birds look unhappy, and the owner only sees those animals as dollar signs. Yes, the establishment has wide variety of species to choose from, but that's only because it's a bird version of a puppy mill. He did not care when we told him our bird passed. No condolences were offered, only blame, defensiveness and greed. I have a lot of pets and have dealt with many breeders over the years, many of which I am STILL in contact with, but I've never met someone so uncaring towards their animals and customers when something goes wrong in my entire life. DO. NOT. BUY. EDIT FOR OWNER RESPONSE (on google): First of all, nothing that I said was a lie and I will 100% stand by it, whether the bird ended up healthy or not the status of your store in my opinion would remain the same. Second of all, this is not the doctor, as my mother does not have time to write these reviews this late at night after hours of surgery during the day, but I can tell from your response, and I hope future readers can as well, that you harbor an unwarranted prejudice against doctors. I am the one who purchased the bird, and was present at every part of this dilemma. I called my vet today before we called you to ask why she gave a clean bill of health when the bird was obviously ill because I was furious with them as well. If there was something wrong with the bird that was detectable, we would've spent any amount of money to care for it. The vet had said that due to the adrenaline of coming into the office that day, subtle signs of illness were hard to detect, which was also why she said 3 days is an extremely unreasonable and selfish warranty agreement. She said the bird was either sick beforehand and the stress of moving brought it out or it was a congenital disorder. I read your warranty, it says a congenital disorder could warrant a discounted replacement but over the phone you offered NO SUCH OPTION, and I refer any possible buyers to the above quotes. You are simply offering to work with me now because I am voicing my opinion publicly and you don't want it to affect your future business. Once the money is in your hand, you don't care nor act civil if something goes wrong. Refer to the above direct quotes and note the complete contradiction. read more

Where to even start- Like other reviewers said, the front of the store is neatly organized with mostly bird supply, there may be a few budgies there as well. There's literally every type of bird item you could want. When you go past the storefront is where the real fun begins.. You can see through glass paneled walls that the birds are kept beyond the door. Upon entry it is almost overwhelming the amount of birds. It's really unbelievable that literally every cage is spotless. There was over 100 birds when I went, around the end of march. We (my boyfriend and I) handled many different birds, we were offered to even look at babies in the incubator who had all been reserved, just to take a peak. The place is huge. Most birds are caged alone, a few have a few buddies, depending on the breed and size of cage.. I really love the lory birds, merely their beauty is captivating. I had read that they are uncontrollable poopers. Joe said exactly that, he could of said get the bird it's a great bird, but he made sure to inform us on every pro and con of breeds we were interested in. Clearly he cares about the birds and wants potential bird owners to know what they're getting into. He had a great deal of knowledge on every bird and was very personable. We left with a senegal, kiwi, who I am completely in love with. I am so happy we got him from joe, he was a decent flyer when we got him, he flies great now.. He is completely healthy and VERY loving. From the first few seconds I had him on my shoulder he was head rubbing me. You can tell a well socialized bird. We have had him a few months and he already knows 5 different commands. We couldn't be happier with our bird and where we got him from. If I ever considered adding to our flock, there is no question that my business would go straight to joe. He even gave us his cell number because we live within a mile from him and said to call him anytime for supplies and he would meet us so we wouldn't have to take the half hour trip! Birds By Joe is an excellent exotic bird shop. I appreciate how conveniently it is located. As a person who grew up raising many different species of birds, I can firmly say that they are messy animals. Aside from the all too familiar sight of moulted feathers and seed husks scattered around the bird room, I thought that the birds were kept in very good conditions. The shop has a good selection of bird products including cages, toys and feed. The seed mixtures that are sold are very clean (not dusty like other bird shops/farms) and have a variety of healthy ingredients. The owner was very polite, eager to help and appeared devoted to the well-being of his birds. He would walk around to check on the birds and feed hungry babies. He also gave unbiased advice when it came to product suggestions and bird care. Too many places that sell birds persuade their customers to buy and feed pellets. (Some species of birds, such as the Eclectus Parrot, do very poorly on a pelleted diet and should be fed a diet based on fresh foods.) Birds By Joe suggests a varied diet and admits that a "pellet tree" does not exist in the wild. Customer service appears to be a priority. Every customer, including myself, seemed to be very happy in the shop. The owner allows you to handle the birds (the vast majority are very good-natured -- an indication that they were properly socialised), but he is honest to inform you if one particular bird could potentially bite. I was smitten by a baby Timneh African Grey who happily rushed over to see me as I opened its cage. The fast-paced waddling was too cute! There is no doubt that I will be returning to Birds By Joe in the future. Do not hesitate to visit this shop. It has easily become one of my favourites! read more

This store is one of only a handful in NJ that is run by people who truly understand parrots and exotic birds...and, what kinds of people will make good 'bird-parents' for each one. The many breeds (from cockatiels to hyacinth macaws) are housed in larger cages that are open all around...letting the birds indulge in their basic need for stimulation and flock interaction. Larger birds are put out on perches, where prospective bird-parents can let them climb onto their arms and shoulders...and, get a real sense of each bird's personality. My 2 sons (15 and 12 years old) were looking for a macaw. We had watched several videos and spent countless hours researching different types of birds. We visited other bird stores closer to our home and even considered putting money down. However, something felt wrong...we never felt comfortable at these other places. I reached out to Joe one night, right before closing time and he gave me an honest answer to all my questions. He encouraged me to stop in anytime with my kids. Fast forward a few days later.... We stopped in first thing Friday morning. We drove 35 minutes and literally walked in 3 minutes after the store was opened. We were greeting within 30 seconds of walking in the door by JOE, who was feeding the baby birds in the the bird room. I shook his hand and reminded him of our conversation a few nights prior. He remembered our discussion and encouraged us to look around. We looked at all the different birds and he answered all our questions while feeding the babies and his employees went about their normal cleaning and straightening up. The place is clean ! Joe never pushed us to purchase a single bird , a single species, not even a cage, he simply provided advice and insight. He spent over 30 minutes with my kids as they fired away with a ton of questions. He spent the time showing them and explaining bird behavior as they held different birds. My 12 year old son(who is very uneasy around anything other than humans) walked up to JOE and told him how clean and what a great variety of birds he has. We ended up leaving without purchasing a bird, because we need to prepare our house a bit. Joe told both my kids to email him with any questions. We will be back soon to purchase a baby bird! In January, We drove a very long way to get a bird. It was our first experience . We wanted a an African grey or Amazon parrot. The store itself was pretty nice. We were shown around . He had a sizable selection of birds. There was one bird that we gravitated toward because he seemed lively. He whistled a "cat " call and la cucharacha. That impressed us, being novices. We were told he was 4 months old. We believed him. It was apparent within a few weeks that this information was probably not correct. After learning about training techniques, it is obvious that "Peanut" had to have been older. There is no way that he could have learned those tunes so young . But the worst part is his aggression. While he loves me, he is very aggressive toward my husband, when I am around. He has caused some very painful bites. We are so disgusted we are thinking of giving him up . I have been a customer of Joe's since he bought the store from the other Joe. I visit the store every other week to get supplies for my birds. When I go to the store for my bird food, Joe or his employee Stefanie is always right up front chatting with customers and ready to say hello and see what you need. The front part of the store has an extremely large selection of toys, a good selection of cages and a good variety of food selection in multiple sizes and for a variety of price ranges. I have bought the Abba brand food in other stores and found that it had moths in it which I had to throw away and basically wasted my money. The food at Joe's has always been fresh and I have never had an issue with it. I also buy Harrison's pellet which is by FAR cheapest at Joe's. If you know this pellet it is pricey but I get a fair price here. It eases my mind to know I can afford a high quality pellet for my flock. Contrary to another review, I do not find many of the supposed conditions of the birds. As far as being in a garage, it is a reconverted room but has climate control, is always warm enough and has plenty of high quality air purifiers throughout the room. If you know anything about birds, then you will know that certain birds (i.e. cockatoos and greys) have dander which can cause lung issues, allergies etc. Air purifiers are a must and the ones Joe has are good brands. He had also mentioned he was buying AustinAir purifiers through a local avian rescue which are top of the line and were used in NYC after 9/11. I personally own them and know them to work (I have both Greys and a Cockatoo as well as several small birds). In the many times I have been there I have known his cages to be clean (as clean as a bird cage can be) and I have seen him and his staff removing the cages and grates and scrubbing and sanitizing them. The birds all have full bowls of food and I have often seen Stefanie or Joe handfeeding the babies. Joe allows me to interact with the birds and I have no trouble taking them out from their cages or playing with them. They are all interactive, alert and friendly towards myself and my family. The birds can get messy but they are babies and eat formula which gets all over the place and they jump around in their water as well. The staff does spray bath the birds and they are cleaned regularly as far as I have noticed. They take great care of their birds and of yours. I got there 15 minutes before closing recently and Joe stayed half an hour late to allow a family to bond with their new baby (they come in everyday during the weaning process). He also stayed late to allow me to shop around. While yes, things can get messy I know that Joe and his staff work very hard to keep his store as neat and clean as possible. Anywhere will get a little messy when you put 20+ babies there. To me, his birds have always been friendly and I have never heard of anybody who bought a bird from him having health issues with their birds. In fact, I have seen many people who bring their birds back and are "regulars" there after purchasing a bird from Joe. read more

simply put, birds by joe is a very welcoming, cozy shop with a genuinely friendly and cheerful owner. my boyfriend, two nieces and i visited joe's about two weeks ago for the first time with the intentions of going home with a conure. actually, my boyfriend had the intentions; i just went along for the ride. and the nieces, of course, went for the excitement of it all. i had harbored reservations about purchasing a bird without getting to know it first. we have other conures at home, and while they are exceptional birds, i didn't want to bring home just ANY bird. the first thing we saw upon entering the store was a lone african gray sitting peacefully in its cage, and with the same excitement of tourists in a foreign country, we went to admire and praise the bird (who only ignored our pleas for him to "talk"). we were then politely greeted by a woman (presumably joe's wife?), and we chatted for a minute or so before continuing on to the back of the store where the rest of the birds were located. we were immediately engaged and captivated by the many beautiful birds. after a few minutes, joe approached us and after we expressed our interests, he introduced us to the many array of conures they had available. in addition, he introduced us to alex, a beautiful, sweet hyacinth macaw that we STILL wish we could have taken home as well! joe seemed very knowledgeable of the birds, but most importantly, he expressed much patience and care for them. i noticed several other people around me, but i couldn't tell whether they were staff or customers because everyone seemed equally happy and friendly just being in that shop. it was genuinely a happy atmosphere, very homey and welcoming. we ended up taking a yellow sided turquoise green cheeked conure home with us. joe worked with us price wise and even threw in a new hut for our new bird. bucky was initially nervous and fidgety, but is slowly warming up to us. he's sweet and cuddly, with a comical personality, and we have joe to thank for patiently helping us find this new family member. needless to say, we were all pleased with our visit and will be returning. oh, joe also informed us that the lone african gray we initially saw talks a great deal when he wants..but he has a potty mouth :) read more

I bought my Canary-Winged Parakeet (a parrotlet) from Joe over a year ago. I have absolutely nothing but wonderful things to say about this place!! Joe is so kind and really knows his birds! Macaroni was in excellent health when I got him and a year later he's grown to his full size, molted perfectly, got in his adult plumage, and is looking better than ever!!
