As a noob, I tried the basic troubleshooting steps with no avail. Needing an electrician to check & address a variety of outlet issues in a rental house, I researched different electrical contractors near me and decided on Birkhead. What a good choice. Called on a Friday around noon expecting they would be able to get someone out early the next week. Phone was answered by very reassuring/professional woman who told me they might be able to get someone out same day (!). Two hours later I receive text notification that a technician was on way to property (!). An hour later receive a text that work is complete (!). This is all within about 4 hours of my initial call. Also, the tenant had said the refrigerator is dead, but the technician replaced the fridge outlet and now the refrigerator is working. So Birkhead just saved me $1K for a new fridge. I then get a call from the tech and he explains all the work he did, takes payment over phone and emails a receipt. I will be using Birkhead for ALL electrician work at my rental houses and residence from now on. What a positive experience. read more

I had Birckhead Electric install five new electrical fixtures in my house: a new kitchen light, a living room ceiling fan, an exterior light, a dining room chandelier, and a bathroom fan/light/Bluetooth speaker combination. The electrician arrived on time and completed the jobs promptly. I had a lot of fixtures to install, so he was there at least half the day (which was fine). He was certainly thorough and explained the issues that can be had with old wiring (my house was built in 1938). He had to cut a bigger hole for the bathroom light/fan/speaker. But he patched it up with a small piece of drywall so I did not have to fix that myself. I plan on having some electrical updates done in the near future (heavy ups, new breakers, outlet replacement). And Birckhead Electric is my new go-to electrical contractor. read more

All the electricity in the upstairs of my townhouse and stairwell (except the GFIs) went out on the Monday of a big snowstorm here in MD. I friend of mine who is exceptionally handy came over, and he couldn't figure out the problem. He looked at all the breakers and told me that I needed to call an electrician. So, I called Birckhead the next morning when we had 5 inches of snow on the ground, and they had a guy come over after the roads had cleared some. That guy (his name was Chris) was as nice as they come. He exhausted the obvious options first and then he took apart nearly every switch, fixture, and socket in the house. He even called his supervisor in the third hour - this name was Joel - also a very nice guy. All told, between the two of them they logged 7 hours hunting down the problem. Thankfully, they took pity on me and only charged me for two hours!!! The problem turned out to be an overhead light that I had a cheapo contractor install last summer. That guy was bonded, licensed and insured, but he used a fair amount of unskilled labor (after the contract was signed of course). That fixture was not done correctly. Whoever did it was in a big rush and pulled the wires through the slots in the pancake plate without first unfurling the them properly. That caused the insulation to be stripped off in spots, and power was making its way from one wire to the other on occasion, until finally it made a good connection and shorted the thing out. I have the fixture and can see it with my own eyes. It's a good thing for me and my daughter that we didn't burn up in this house. Not just any electrician would have come over in the snow, persisted until the problem was found, and then charged me a third of what they should have. I'm never paying a another handyman to do my electrical work -- I'm calling Birckhead no questions asked. Plus, they are local people and very nice to deal with. read more

Part of my house lost power and there was no light on driveway. I used to call Professional Electric for my previous electrical need. But after 3 try and 5 minutes wait for each call I decided that it is time to find a new one. Check local electricians in Yelp and found Birckhead. Technician arrive within an hour of my initial call. Tim was friendly and he checked all wiring and switches. Found fault wiring in Main box and and fixed the issue. He also checked the Main box for any visible problems and explained to me what he found and told me what to do. Price is very reasonable for such a quick service. This company has great and friendly customer service. We have called them on two separate occasions and they helped us fix our electrical issues on both occasions. The first was a few years ago. A loose connection in one room of our house was causing a partial outage. The technician found and repaired the outlet without any trouble, even taking the time to explain to me the wiring system. The second outage happened just a few days ago. I spoke with a technician and he took the time to listen and understand the problem. We determined it was a loose connection to the exterior power box, and suggested calling BGE to fix the problem, which they did. I appreciate the patient and knowledgeable staff. read more

This company did a good job of installing the light fixture in my staircase. My problem came when it was time for payment. I asked about the price up front before installing the light and was told it was $125/hour. The job took 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete. When I was given the invoice, I was charged $238!! I asked why and the reason was because he included travel time to my house. I was totally confused since travel time was not mentioned when he quoted the price initially. This thing about charging for travel time was only brought up when giving me the final invoice. We went back and forth but the technician was adamant that a travel charge was justified. He charged me an hour and a half travel time when their office is only 3 miles away. I would have no problem paying it if this charge was mentioned in the beginning when I asked. I don't like that he was not upfront about the cost for services. I would have used them to do more work for me in the future, however after this experience, no thanks! Update: After my initial review on Google, this owner emailed me on Monday and admitted that their company does not charge for travel costs and that his technician lied and was misinformed. He went on to say that the extra charge was due to including a helper along with the technician to complete my job to save me time and money. This extra charge for a helper was never quoted to me from the time I made an appointment, nor when I asked for the price before the technician started work. Instead, I was lied to about a travel fee. If it was that simple and a cost-saving measure why was I never told of this additional cost until you send me an email because of my honest review? All I was ever told is the price would be $125/hour. If it is your normal practice to charge additional for an extra person, why was that never communicated throughout my entire transaction? Why did you have to email me after the transaction to tell me about the real reason for this additional cost? If this is your normal practice, why would your technician not know this and instead make up a lie and say the extra charge was due to travel? Why??? As you can see, this owner does not want to take accountability for their poor customer service, and a gross misrepresentation of their fees. Buyer beware.... read more

Tim was sent out by this company to install an outside lamp post. The work order stated the line would be hand buried and installed. After coming home to a line above ground and excuse that the earth will eventually bury the line itself I was not pleased. It wasn't until last night when we received our first heavy rain and heard a loud electrical buzz coming from outside; followed by a few lights, lamp post and fridge shorting out. After inspecting outside I noticed the very, very low installed lamp outlet was wet. I called Tim in the morning and explained the situation only to be told I should contact my home warranty or pay a service call for Brickhead electric to come back out. Not the response I was looking for, nor type of service to being with. Would not trust this company to replace a lightbulb! read more

Timothy H and Dalyon J did an excellent job installing four recessed lights and a fan about one month ago. We were so happy with the work that we hired the company again to put in twelve more recessed lights and three outside lights plus dimmer switches. Chris, the service manager, was very attentive to our needs and made sure we had the correct lights. He also assisted in picking out the outside porch light that would result in the best illumination. We were so pleased with the second visit that we were planning on installing another ceiling fan in one room and a light in another. We will use Birckhead again. They kept the area clean, they were on time, and Timothy was very knowledgeable on how to best set up the lights.
