If you have to see a nurse Denise, Beth, Irene and others are top notch. The office staff Mandee, Tammy, Jon along with others are great and will not hesitate to help on the donor floor when needed. And the staff on the donor floor is exceptional and knowledgeable about what needs to be done. Jordann, Ray, Stacy, Cheyenne, Carrie, PK Brydii and others make you feel like one of the family. Always smiling while doing their work. There is some joking and laughter amongst all, but above all they are professionals I recommend giving this location a shot if your planning on starting to donate, you will not be disappointed. Allow yourself some time for your first donation, it takes a little longer than the donations that will follow. I enjoy the chance to see everyone and maybe share in a laugh which is needed sometimes after a long day at work, or first thing in the morning. Make sure you hydrate the day before and the day of your donation, this will make your donation faster. Avoid fried food and dairy the day before and the day of because this will slow down your donation time. Steve L.

Days before, I logged into their website to select a convenient time slot for my appointment. On the day of my appointment, I again logged in to complete my health questionnaire. When I entered the blood bank, a phlebotomist immediately greeted me. She soon started to type my information in her computer, and she took my vital signs and pricked my finger to test my iron levels. Several minutes later, she inserted a needle into my vein. She had a very good aim and found my vein on the first attempt. My blood drained into the bag quickly, and another phlebotomist removed the needle and bandaged my arm. Both phlebotomists had friendly personalities and provided good customer service. For the next 15 minutes, I sat at a table, where I rested and I ate snacks and drank juice. In total, I was at my appointment for about 35 minutes. Sufficient parking spaces were available outside. The blood bank looked clean, and the staff enforced social distancing and the wearing of face masks. Vitalant is testing all blood and platelet donations for COVID-19 antibodies, and I feel eager to find out my results.

I made my appointment with the Central Blood Bank online several days in advance. On the day of…read moredonation, I filled out a health history questionnaire online while I was home. I first did the questionnaire in my Firefox browser, but then I could not get my donation pass to print. As a result, I filled out the questionnaire a second time in my Explorer browser. This time the donation pass was able to print. I headed on over to the Central Blood Bank's downtown location. When I showed up, I was greeted by a phlebotomist. She took me back into a small office. She asked me some questions and then started up a health history questionnaire for me on her computer. I told her that I already did the questionnaire at home, and I showed her my donation pass. She said that I had to fill it out again, because she had already started it up. I was annoyed that I was filling out the questionnaire for the third time that day. Given my blood type, platelets are supposed to be most beneficial for me to donate, but the phlebotomist looked at me and said that my body was "too tiny" to donate platelets. With all of her questions and comments about my weight, I sort of felt like she thought that I was lying about my weight. I do weigh enough, based on my weighings at home before and after the donation. Maybe the center should have a scale so they can weigh people. So anyway... I donated whole blood instead. The phlebotomist continued to talk to me, maybe just to be friendly, but I was uncomfortable telling my life story in an open room for other people to hear. After donation of the blood, I was not dizzy at all, but I sat for several minutes to rest and to eat food and drink before I walked back home. I do have another appointment a few months from now. After six donations, you are supposed to get a $15 Visa gift card, which is not much money but is a bit of a thank you.

Earlier in the day I came down with the worst sickness I could imagine -- a stomach virus. Knowing I was dehydrated with no relief of my symptoms in sight I decided it was time to go to the hospital for treatment. My mom (bless her soul) came to pick me up, and we waited in the lobby for about 15-20 minutes before being seen. The receptionist at the counter was not overly friendly, she said few words to us, but she wasn't rude. The lobby wasn't the most comfortable, but it felt pretty tidy at least. When I was taken back to be seen, my nurse was immediately comforting to me and I knew I was in good hands. The other nurses that checked in on me after his shift ended as well as Dr. Conforti were incredibly nice, and I didn't have to call them in for anything. I was brought a warm blanket and anything I had requested and my hospital bed was also surprisingly comfortable. The only negative was the TV and sound system, and my mom didn't look super comfortable sitting in the uncomfortable chairs at the foot of my bed. Overall it was a good experience, especially considering the friendliness of the medical professionals that helped me. After 5 hours of treatment I was sent home to finish recovering at home!

My workplace was offering CPR/AED and First Aid training and certification through the Red Cross…read more I decided to volunteer as a representative of the company. I honestly didn't realize how expensive these training classes are without the funding from my company. However, they see the benefit in having several employees certified in case of an emergency. The class took up the better part of a day and consisted of classroom training, hands on training IE mouth to mouth resuscitation on the torso "dummies" along with proper procedures on how to operate the AED machines, and some roleplaying with other volunteers. I found the instructor to be incredibly informative and engaging. She certainly maintain a level of competency, and kept the classroom structure flowing from one topic to the next. We covered a lot of ground in those 6 or so hours. Everything from preforming CPR, and all the steps surrounding the act itself, to the proper use of a defibrillator, how to handle a person in shock, breathing emergencies, diabetic emergencies, seizures, strokes, muscle, bone and joint injuries, concussions, environmental emergencies, anaphylactic reactions, chocking procedures, poisoning, burns, and bleedings. I will say after all that I have a new found respect for those in the medical community, and other lay responders. There are many steps to help determining and intervening in an emergency situations but a lot of it comes down to common sense, and observation. I am happy I had the opportunity to take this class and now am knowledgeable of how to react in an emergency situation, I still really hope I never have to! Great class, just wish it was a little more affordable for the classes if you were taking them without financial support.
