Review is just based on today's campus tour + admission advisor meeting + eating lunch at one of their cafeterias. Will update a few months after daughter has attended the school. 92 acres about 5 thousand students or so (If I remember correctly from the tour). About 25 students per classroom. Doesn't sound bad at all I think. Biola has lots of open space. We could see students eating, studying, laying down on the grass relaxing, taking a rest, eating, and studying. It was great to see the students having the opportunity to do that. It is a closed campus, which I like. Just another measure of protection. Checking in at the gate with the security guard could take a minute so be patient and get there a few minutes early. Students and staff go through the other side of the gate. Lots of good information was put out. We were able to ask questions if we wanted to. Very nice and relaxing tour. Very well explained. They were all very polite and respectful. The food at the cafeteria was actually really good lol. I really enjoyed it. Good pizza, delicious ice cream, and tasty cookies lol. read more

While my family and I appreciate the approachable bible staff at Biola, there are better business schools out there. The Crowell School of Business is lackluster and is a microcosm of some the worst parts of Christianity. They claim to give students a premier education. However, my kid was harrased and bullied by not 1 but 2 business professors - Jake Aguas and Steve Tierney. To the Crowell School of Business. I understand that no professor is perfect, However, a business school that claims to give students a "premier education", should understand that bullying and discriminating business students is not okay. Also, your accounting professor Steve Tierney has no office hours! It's no wonder that students have done poorly in his accounting class! I recommend that if you are going to have business students pay an extreme amounts of money, make sure your professors are attentive to their students. read more

Dorm rooms are good sized and well kept. Nice area in southern CA - safe neighborhood, secured campus. 30 minutes to the beach, 15 minutes to Disneyland. Biola is a microcosm of some of the worst parts of Christian culture and financial management. There are well-intentioned faculty on campus but leadership is not on their side. Plus, I was only able to find part-time work after I spent at least $150k on my bachelor's degree. Career preparation is severely lacking. Importantly, I left the university unable to return to church. I no longer feel safe in religious spaces after the blatant racism and misogyny I witnessed at the hands of several respected figures on campus. Bottom line, go elsewhere. read more

The security in the front around 4-5:30 a.m is totally unprofessional. She does her job yes but customer service wise she's TERRIBLE. She has no type of experience with that. She has an attitude, she's very rude once she gets a situation she's unsure about. She has no common courtesy for people entering the establishment. Regardless if you have a security license it does not make you a police officer to enforce anything. I understand that's policy for people that signed the terms and conditions and agreed to live there along with parking and going to Biola. It's not a federal building It's not a coded required entry building. I was declined entry - - Requesting food delivery drivers Drivers License while delivering to submit for a permit is wasting time while having us give our personal information out it's absolutely redundant I already got cleared through the app I shouldn't be asked for my personal information again. I write this update with a heavy heart. My daughter has decided to come home, back to Washington. Turns out So Cal isn't the place for her. It is a very different culture than what she is used to in Washington (people are pretty laid back and generally unpretentious, and there are a lot of hiking and outdoor activities in Washington). The first two months were pretty good but most kids are from California and go home on the weekends and there aren't many campus activities, leaving the out of state kids pretty danged bored. My daughter got really involved where she could but in the end there just isn't much res life activity going on (at least not in her hall). There isn't a lot of outdoor activity near La Mirada, you have to drive to the ocean which is fine but it is cold in winter months. Hiking takes quite a drive. Her roommate turned out to be very different than her. There isn't much of a roommate match like most other schools so if you don't find your own, plan on getting the luck of the draw with no real rhyme or reason. She will miss the sun and the excellent education at Biola but is looking forward to getting back to Washington. read more

I am really enjoying my time here. God was so faithful in bringing me here. I am a commercial music major, and the smaller class sizes overall in the music department have been a blessing in us getting more instructor help. One of my music professors has super gone out of his way for me too, like zoom calling when I've needed sight singing help, and even driving to school in the evening one day to help me with a music tech assignment. My other music professors have been open, invitational, and available for office hours and email questions too. I really appreciate how overall the Conservatory of music is humble at Biola, and that they incorporate Jesus into what we do and bringing Him glory through our art, yet striving to be excellent in that at the same time with our music. I am also in Torrey, and WOW. It is such a rich learning experience. I've been learning how to discuss with others on different types of books, whether it's the Bible, book by C.S. Lewis, or books by non Christian authors who have very different beliefs. We look at different perspectives, discuss what a book is talking about, yet still hold to Biblical views. The Torrey professors are wonderful overall, they put you with a mentor, and mine (Dr. Henderson) is awesome. I love the socratic model Torrey enforces, the writing, and my cohort has awesome people in it, who even with being from different places, including different states, having different personalities, love Jesus and respect each other overall. All my professors have been investing in their students in some shape or form, and overall they really care about student's character. I came from a public high school, and while I appreciate experiences I had there, it was super different than Biola. It feels so nice to have a hugely increased number of teachers and peers that really overall treat me with the love of Jesus, including kindness. I have never seen a place where so many people treated others like they are made in God's image. It's definitely not perfect, I have seen students say and do things they shouldn't here and there, but overall, it has been wonderful, people overall are really kind and welcoming. Biola is a beautiful model of Biblical unity amidst diversity. I've also really enjoyed how they try to celebrate different ethnicities there. The school is super Christ-centered. I thought the chapels and teaching here would be like baby Christian milk, but while there is milk, there is also meat. Good balance, especially for so many different people at different places in their walks with God. Overall, great commuter community, the collegium is a blessing. Finally, a shout out to campus security. I commute, and my car needed to be jumpstarted one time. They literally have a jump start kit in the office. The other day also, I didn't realize it, but my tire was flat, and turns out there was a nail in it. I got a call from campus security about it, saying that a Residential Director saw it and called it in, and they wanted to let me know so I wouldn't drive away with it. I appreciate the 24/7 campus security line, the phone operators are so friendly overall, and I appreciate cs driving around campus, including at night, and keeping watch, too. I'm glad that campus security, and people on this campus, are looking out for me. So blessed that Jesus has got my back, and He has been using the people here at Biola in doing that. read more

My time at Biola University was the darkest of my life. The Spirit of Peace left my soul from the moment I stepped onto campus, until years later when God showed me the cloud that covered the entire place. I cannot explain how fractured the community is, if you understand the idea of the Church that Jesus had. Biola University is with Liberty University. The lack of foundational truth found in faculty, teaching, commitment, and policy is profound. Homosexuality, new age sin, addiction, and deviancy run just as rampant as secular educational institutes, but much more care is taken that these are hidden from view. I believe the weakening values of the University as an institution are corrupting, confusing, and misleading young Christians. The foundation of Jesus Christ is lost in rhetoric, convoluted theology, and a staggering amount of imposed interpretation. I struggled personally at the school, which came to light to many, many, many members of staff before I took initiative to get help. It was a graceless fall, and in that place, God was the only thing with me. The shallowness of help I received, the lack of follow-through, the amount of faculty that were aware of the situation that showed nominal concern/empathy/care--changed not only my trust in Biola, but hurt my view of church leaders, authority, and religious universities as a whole. The best thing that ever happened to me was a meeting with a professor who presented the option of leaving, and what it would look like. read more

As a transfer student who spent three years here from 2009-2012, I absolutely loved my time here. The campus is gorgeous, and has lots of places around to hang out with friends, study, and enjoy the beautiful sunny days in socal. The library has nice study rooms and cubicles to sequester yourself when needed. You can leave your stuff and go to the bathroom and people won't steal it! Throughout my time at Biola, my roommates and I never locked our dorm rooms and never had a problem with our stuff getting stolen. Cafeteria food has lots of variety, and you can always count on pizza or salad if you don't find anything else. Mexican food is the bomb here! And then after a while, it's time to get creative with what you eat and make some new creations! Professors are awesome. They really care about you. Take advantage of those office hours, get to know them outside of class! read more

I am a 26 year old, non-traditional student who has finished her first year at Biola. I am a music composition major, who has spent time in the recent years working and going to school part time, and now going to college full time at Biola. I hope to be one of the few comments here that tells you why I gave the rating I did, and what my exact experience has been. 1) Positive: The professors in the music program---The music program here is TOUGH. So many drop out thinking its going to be a walk in the park. This could be due to the fact that many students here are fresh out of highschool and new to the whole college experience. It isn't a walk in the park. It is actually one of the most challenging majors here at Biola. Just to take 12 units, you are taking around 7 courses/extracurriculars because each course is about 1-2 units, or 3 units if you are also taking your general ed here. You are worked very hard, and treated like an adult by the faculty. 2) Positive: The faculty members in the Bible and Music Department. I could NOT be more pleased. My professors in the music department believed in me before I began to believe in myself. Going back to college in my mid 20's after all the hardship I went through was a scary dream but I always felt I was meant to write and compose music. So I went for it even though I knew how to write very little. I am pleased to say that the professors helped take my raw talent, and make it 100x more refined than it was before. They are kind, thoughtful, offer helpful criticism, and offer HONEST answers about how brutal this field can be. The music department also allows all student composers to perform their work. Many other colleges don't actually have student composed concerts. Sad! 3) Negative: The Spiritual climate here is NOT for those who are more oriented to things like prophecy, speaking in tongues, healings, miracles, signs, and wonders. You need to be on campus to see what I am talking about. I was shocked to find that among most students, there seemed to be less faith that God could still move in mighty ways in people's lives than outside of the college. This was incredibly unsettling. I have gotten to know many students here as both a friend and mentor and find that although there is a lot of spiritual "brain food" here, closeness with the Holy Spirit is still quite foreign to them. 4) Negative: The cost & the implications of the cost will make it incredibly difficult, if not impossible to be a low-income student who doesn't work and goes to college taking 16 - 18 credits. If you don't have parents helping you pay off the leftover tuition or to help you with rent while you take on 18 units, you REALLY need to reconsider going elsewhere. Sadly, the high price-tag of this institution has many far-reaching effects ( a problem we see not just at Biola but else where ). Let me break this down for you. When you are pressured into taking 16-18 units, you are usually unable to work more than 8 hours a week. Cool. Most students at Biola fall in this category, or they don't work at all. That's the ideal isn't it? But what if you have absolutely no help aside from what you receive from the FAFSA? Students who have more severe challenges with finances, and dysfunction in the family will find it difficult to be here as they will most likely end up being a non-traditional student such as myself. No shame in that. However, this makes Biola an incredibly unfavorable place for those who are non-traditional and don't have the means to afford the cost of living in college. It is shocking for me to be at a college where the majority of my fellow students don't work or they get a job just for fun. I came from a community college where many families had to scrape by. Many students like me, had to work 25+ hours while taking 10 units because it was the best we could do even if we were smart and could get scholarships. Perhaps this explains the lack of socioeconomic, and ethnic diversity here. So please, make sure that you are meant to be at Biola if you decide to come here. The financial implications are steep if you are low-income. Even with scholarships, this place is expensive because you need to factor in how you will support yourself while you study :) read more

I am very disappointed in this school. I am a retired military / disabled veteran and I used my Post 9/11 GI Bill for a degree in Christian Apologetics. I signed the agreement that I had 5 years to complete my degree. I have 29 out of 39 units required to graduate. I had an ebb and flow of health issues and had to drop out of a few semesters . then covid hit and everything fell apart for most colleges. I was told to wait to re-enroll because everything was going to shift to online without a residency requirement. They ended up changing the entire degree And they refused to allow me to be grandfathered into it. Instead of needing just a few classes to graduate I now needed 28. This school doesn't care about veterans, students, or fellow Christian's. They only care about money. I hope this review helps others to decide not to attend Biola University. read more

It's such a blessing to meet such amazing people that walk the right path and are very much as devoted as you are to being a very successful Christian. It's a great campus to get married..! Everything you need is all here at Biola University. The chapel to have a wedding ceremony, the banquet hall like place to have a wedding reception, seasonal differences of backdrops for photography sessions (Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter). These sessions include: Bride & Groom, Wedding Party, Family and Friends portrait sessions. Parking is great. No hassle of finding spaces. However, if your event falls between weekdays during the school year than you'll be most likely to have hard time finding decent spots. There is a couple of reasons for three star rating. First, the bride has to use one of the lecturing class rooms as her waiting/dressing room. It doesn't look that pretty. no mirrors and no furnitures. Oh... I'm sorry, there are some furnitures: teacher's desk and rows of student chairs. Second, the reception area has a low ceiling and it's located right next to the students' cafeteria. If your event happens during the vacations than you'll have a quiet and intimate reception. But expect chatterings and noises from students next door. After my son nearly drowned two years ago from Splash La Mirada (during his group swim lessons there) we tried Biola University Aquatics for private swim lessons. They have great instructors who I assume are students there. This is our second summer session with them and my two kids are much better swimmers because of their lessons here. The staff are great too. They all seem to care about each kid and are consistently friendly when we arrive at the pool. For a while, I had a phobia about leaving my kids to the instructors. This is because of what happened at Splash - the instructor turned his back on my son to catch another kid and did not realize my son was drowning until he saw me screaming and running toward them! Now I can leave them with confidence so I can run some laps on the track nearby. Anyway, I am very happy with the progress that my kids have made taking lessons here. I highly recommend their private lessons that last for two weeks. They will learn the different strokes, diving, and swimming full laps across. read more

I wasn't sure about Christianity for a while, but this place makes me want to be the furthest thing from a Christian. Their attitude about anything controversial at all is appalling. I got my degree from biola only after realizing how it wouldnt be worth it to leave after how much I had invested in the university, (bible credits and tuition money). I expected to go to school to focus on school, instead I was constantly concerned with how I would get in trouble weather it be where I parked, where I was or what I was doing. I was once called to the RAs office as a little freshman because i "wasn't being welcoming" I'm sorry but are we 12??? If you want to constantly be on edge, this is the place for you. Where the students (Christian students) worship their president. Very Weird. Also be careful who you trust here, their intentions might seem genuine at first but they very well might not be. My parents were paying full price for two students at the same time and they claimed they couldn't help us financially. I loved the business department, the professors cared about us so much and I will appreciate them forever. I was the catering manager for a bit and served the president a good number of times in his office when no one else was around. Never felt appreciated or acknowledged which I thought was so weird because he has the opportunity to acknowledge me. It was honestly pretty awkward. The uni, as a whole, acts like they're invested in their students. I will say that some individual processors are amazing!! And i wonder why they are here instead of somewhere more creditable. First hand can tell you theyre invested in the money. Don't be fooled by their charm, choose another university that can offer you much more in every way and save you lots of money. read more

The biblical studies department is the best of its kind for undergrad in the country. It has amazing professors and the education is phenomenal! I grew so much in my faith there, especially intellectually. However, unless you're naive (homeschooled, private school, sheltered, etc..) or right out of high school, you will most likely have trouble fitting in and most likely get misunderstood. It can be dangerous for transfers even campus safety notices it, its called "the biola bubble." I would strongly recommend transfers and older students with more life experience to not live on campus. Other then that, fantastic education! read more

I'm actually a bit caught off by all of the negative comments I've seen about Biola. Really?! I attended school here from 2008-2013 and graduated with a BA in Sociology. Financially there were times when it was tough, it IS a private school after all- what do I expect? However, there IS opportunity to apply/receive scholarships if you do your research. What, you think free money is going to be easy to find? The Financial Aid counselors are all SUPER helpful and helped me figure things out every semester. I don't come from a rich family and I pulled out my portion of loans. However, they listen to each circumstance and give recommendations and show a lot of GRACE when it comes to deadlines. As for the required Biblical Studies minor, okay yeah, that part can kind of suck. But guess what, when it comes to the majority of my friends who graduated from this institution, many of them say that they actually REGRET not taking these courses more seriously because there was a lot to be learned. I can understand that people may not want to partake in this.. but you ARE attending the BIBLE INSTITUTE OF LOS ANGELES. If you forget, please go back and look at what the B in Biola stands for. As for job success- I believe it's the same as anyone from any college. All my friends who were hard workers were able to find FINANCIALLY STABLE and RESPECTABLE jobs straight out of college. As for me, I was able to enter a top 10 masters program straight out of college. And guess what? My professors in my program had prepared me very well and I'm doing well in my NON CHRISTIAN masters program too. I'm not saying this to anyone in particular as everyone's circumstances are different, but IF Biola happens to be the ONLY reason why you can't find success post college, please do not blame your incompetency on the school that awarded you a degree. I am not a cookie cutter Christian. Not at all. But, I don't think it's fair to judge the culture of Biola by a certain population of people here. I've met plenty of people who were not "SUPER CHRISTIANS" or "RICH WHITE KIDS" here but still loved attending this school. And guess what? Since you're primarily surrounded by "SUPER CHRISTIANS" at least you won't be dealing with complete A-HOLES at school. Just saying. read more

It's a beautiful campus with friendly people. Although, my experience was bad for different reasons. My first impression was my student advisor who told me straight up that I wasn't going to make it into the nursing program. Now, I understand she may be saying what's realistic, but there are other ways of saying it. That's how I started my year.. I was straight out of high school, looking forward to college, I was never an A student, and now I'm utterly discouraged. I did not finish in this institution. I wasted a semester and transferred to west coast university where I AM a nursing student and will graduate next year with bachelors as an RN. This isn't to bash on the university, this is to make you aware that at a Christian university, you would expect the attitude to different. I left Biola confused, but still grounded in my faith. I started at WCU, a secular university, and they showed how much they cared. I couldn't help thinking that this is how Biola should've been, but wasn't. But you know what? It was blessing because I would've never been able to testify at Biola, but I am able to testify at WCU. I'm exercising my faith as a true and faithful servant. read more

Class of 2012, 2014, 2017 Positives: + the best undergraduate bible major program + one of the top three seminary schools (the other two being trinity and Dallas) + one of the last remaining conservative theological schools + many profs who are the best or one of the best in their fields (e.g. J.P Moreland, W.L. Craig, Clint Arnold, M. Hubbard, J. Hellerman, K. Way, S. Cunningham, etc.) + learning environment is very open for the expression of a variety of views. However, unreasonable views will be challenged, with respect and gentleness by the profs. + required class integrating bible/faith with any field of study. + taught how to think, not what to think. + grad school is affordable with plenty of scholarship options available + great library for tons of resources!!! Negatives: - limited parking near the Bible department buildings. - cost for undergraduate schooling - sometimes limited in choices of bible electives and classes each semester for grad program. Consider: - th.m. Program will no longer be available. - shortened degrees for seminary - spiritual formation classes have been described as both amazing and horrible. I attended Biola from 2000-2004 and while its not a bad university(some of the professors are just awesome), there are a few places where it definitely needs work. The academics here are actually good. I think most people simply assume that because its a Christian university, the academics aren't up to par as some of the larger, more "established" universities. That's false. Because of the attention you're able to get from your professors due to small size of some of the upper div classes(depending on your major) it definitely helps you. What really annoyed me about Biola was its emphasis on "Christian". Yes I understand that its a Christian university, and you have to be one to attend etc. But really lets be realistic, not everyone there is Christian and things happen there that Biola would rather cover up lest it tarnishes the reputation it has as a "Christian" university. Mandatory chapels were a bane of my existence. I can understand why they'd require it(again to keep the Christian label) but at the same time I find it totally unnecessary. And make up chapels???? Come on...that definitely doesn't help foster any sort of spiritual anything. That's why the "Slide n Glide" is so prevalent, quite a few people see it as a waste of time. Sure have it for people that want to go, but don't make it mandatory. The atmosphere. There are alot of "hip" Christian, who wear sandals, have dreads and huge beards like Jesus. Images plays a big deal at Biola and you need to fit one of the various molds of what a Christian is supposed to be like. Another point of interest is that if you swore, people would look at you like you just cursed out their mother. Lots of judgement, from people etc. Felt like living at church basically. Required Bible classes. This is another one of those things you can't really escape from. To be graded on a class about spiritual formation reduces your relationship with Jesus down to performance. I think it tends to have a contrary effect which rather than to foster a relationship with Christ, it'll tend to hinder it as now we see it as a duty and a chore possibly doing something for class. Again I understand this is almost unavoidable but just pointing out the pitfalls of something like this. Overall I really didn't enjoy my stay at Biola. I stopped going to church during my sophomore year and didn't for a few years after due to me being sick of it all. Church in all its forms is useless and I hated the religious aspect of it all. I wish Biola taught me about Jesus, the Gospel. I don't care about the grade, I just wanted to deepen my relationship with Him but I didn't find it there. I'd graded it lower, but due to some of the awesome professors I had, I'd have to give it a 3. read more

I went here on a campus tour with a friend. People who also attended the same session complained about not being able to join student government as a freshman. Chapel is required but some students just slide their card. My mother wanted me to go to school here because it was nearby but she didn't anticipate the culture shock I experienced when I saw that it was an evangelical Christian campus known as the birthplace of conservative fundamentalism. You'll need your pastor's recommendation as part of your admissions application. read more

My friend proudly said i didn't worry about my purse as i left my seat for the rest room or get more food. Nobody steals anything even i left my possessions at the table or seat. To date, the student portal is not user friendly, everything seems to be hidden, the Student Success coaches are never there, there is no encouragement or pro-active behavior. Biola University is a great place to find a quality Christian education. They really emphasize the spiritual and academic side of your life. The professors here are great and they really love their students. The campus is on the smaller side compared to other schools, but they definitely try to make use of the space given. They just opened up the new Talbot building. A downfall would be the lack of parking spaces, and the spaces they do have are sometimes REALLY REALLY TIGHT, you're just asking to get your car ding'd. read more

Let me start by expressing my pure dissatisfaction with this institution - I would not so much as hesitate to award it zero stars if I could. The Bible Institute is home to some of the most sheltered, unexposed children to grace this earth and the professors and staff at this school treat you as if you are still five years old. There is no rule book on the face of the planet as extensive as the one at Biola, so be prepared to be placed on a tight leash when attending this institution. Be especially careful when roaming the campus outside of open hours, because so much as breathing on the opposite genders side of the side walk could cost you up to $40. There is quite literally no way one can mature and grow under such intense supervision. Moving on, do not expect to receive any help from the departments here, as they are all unorganized and scatter-brained. They are incapable of communicating and processing the simplest of information through their pea-sized, narrow minds. In fact, it is my strong opinion that Priscilla from the housing department should be terminated immediately, for she is (quite literally) the biggest disgrace to the staff here at Biola insomuch as my experience leads me to warn. She will gloss over your housing form and slap you with someone who was raised in a barn, then laugh in your face when your sanity leads you to request a new roommate. Furthermore, the audacity this woman has to huff and puff at me over the phone upon my withdraw from the institution, accusing me of incorrectly filling out my housing form and insufficiently warning them of my departure after TWO emails and SEVERAL phone calls, is quite appalling. Seems as though the staff here could use some serious training in how to approach matters in a Christ like manner. CHAPELS - get ready to spend all your precious time attending chapels, as you will be devoting 20 ungodly hours of your time to this task. If you are prepared to listen to Aja Grant screech the same exact lyric over and over and over for 40 minutes straight, by all means, attend this institution. But, if you are prone to brain aneurisms from blood-pressure-spiking bores such as these, steer clear. THE FOOD - be prepared to drain your entire bank account on food. Personally, I would rather eat every meal from a state penitentiary with convicts cooking my meals than eat the gag-inducing meals prepared by this institution. Not a single person working in the "caf" gives a rat about the quality of food or cleanliness, as there was not a single time I grabbed a utensil free of dirt or grime. Countless students get food poisoning daily due to their unsanitary, non-existent precautions and consider yourself lucky if you don't get some sort of foreign object in your food, much less make it back to your dorm before liquid starts seeping out of your butthole. On top of all of the red flags listed above, I've never been on a college campus with such drastic irritations. Biola is filled with incompetent drivers who take up two parking spaces on a repeated basis, causing you to hike from East Asia back to your dorm in the 90 degree heat after leaving to go anywhere from the hours of 9am-3pm or 7pm onward. And not to mention the abundance of students raised with such inconsideration and senselessness that they bump into you on every corner and think it's okay to blast their ulcer-provoking music straight into the window of your room for hours on end. In conclusion, the Bible Institute is the dictionary definition of Hell and I am here to warn anyone reading this to seek education elsewhere. read more

The professors here are world-renown. They write the textbooks that your professors use at your Christian college. The university has a worldwide reputation as a defender of biblical Christianity. I hope all my kids graduate from here. read more

Worst college on the planet. My son graduated from Biola at age 22. He's 36 now, and still paying off student loans! ... and a long way to go. Biola issues worthless degrees from a private over-priced liberal arts college that have no marketable value. My best friend is joining the class of 2015, and I can not help but add my two cents. I love Biola University and everything she stands for. The location is nice, right off the highway, close to Disneyland, and easy to access. I love the campus; although this college is not on my list, the atmosphere is intoxicating. I love the chapel and the gardens. It is truly an accurate representation of God's creation and I can not wait to visit frequently.
