I had a very upsetting experience at the Big Y in Monroe, CT on April 8. While using self-checkout, an employee (A) repeatedly paced behind me and stared the entire time without offering any assistance. It felt intimidating and inappropriate. When I asked if there was an issue, she said no, yet continued to watch me. The behavior made me feel as though I was being unfairly suspected of wrongdoing or possibly racially profiled, which is completely unacceptable. I was simply shopping for my child's birthday. Although the manager I spoke with was respectful, the situation itself should never have happened. No customer should be made to feel targeted, judged, or uncomfortable while shopping. This needs to be taken seriously and addressed to ensure it does not happen to anyone else. read more

The staff are all fine and friendly but the problem I had with the food quality is unacceptable. Literally the first and only time I've gotten food prepared by Big Y and I find plastic in the German potato salad. Before finding the plastic I found it to be good. Very standard flavor (in a good way). But Big Y needs to be more careful. The plastic was clear so the piece we found could've easily been swallowed. Picked up a pizza for Super Bowl Sunday from big Y and when we got home and opened it .. it was totally black and brunt. How dishonest for the people taking the pizzas out of the oven and putting it in the box! They are the best here. They never seem to run out of things, there are indeed human beings working behind the registers which is great, staff is friendly and it is a pleasure shopping here. I would really recommend them over other markets. I have no negatives at all. One time when I wasn't feeling well, a staff member offered to help me to my car! Have been a long time resident of Monroe. Big Y as far as quality is very good and I highly recommend it. As far as customer service, I've never seen such disengaged, uncaring, rude people before working in a customer service job. How do they get away with being rude to their customers?! Some of the cashiers are cordial. The rest of the staff are not. The worse experience is when I go to the customer service desk. It's not a good shopping experience. There are some good sales every week but their regular price is pretty high compared to shoprite and stop and shop. Pro tip: download their app. There are some special coupons for hot foods or Big Y branded items. The staff are friendly. Never a long line. Tonight, we tried their fried seafood. We got a fisherman's platter $10.99 and changed to sweet potato fries. Yummy (wish it was crunchier though we didn't get to eat it until 15 min after it was made/packed up). There were shrimps, bay scallops, one piece of fish and clams. I liked the bay scallops and clams. The shrimp is average and unfortunately my fish was all soggy. Next time I am going to eat it in the car in the parking lot! Husband's fish sandwich also came with fries and cole slaw. At regular price of $7 it's a good deal but this month, it's on sale for $5! The pizza area also had a lot of customers as well as the sandwich counter. This may become my go to place for ready made cheap good hot foods. Next time we will be trying the fried chicken. read more

And he said because I wasn't rang out they could just give me the right price. I told him,he lost a customer who shops there multiple times each week. I wish I told him to keep the groceries. Management is terrible here. I'm not from the area & didn't know that in Connecticut you cannot buy alcoholic beverages on a Sunday after 6. Im from Manhattan nyc where rules like that don't exist. As soon as I got to the register I said hello to the cashier & placed my item down. Before she could even speak back the manager ran over & snatched my items off of the register with an attitude. He turned his back to the register & tried to whisper something brief to the cashier. I thought maybe a manager had to check ID. Instead he did not speak a word to me just ran off with the item. The cashier was kind enough to explain why. All I wondered was how long was he watching me walk around the store with that item waiting for me to approach the register. That was the rudest most disgusting encounter ever. Where was the decency as the manager to turn to me & say "hey guys unfortunately we are unable to sell this product at a certain time if you swing by tomorrow we would be more than happy" ... a little customer service goes a long way. Not sure who he was but this was yesterday October 4th at 7pm if that helps anyone narrow him down. Again the cashier was an angel unfortunately her manager was terrible. I'm not upset at all about any rules or regulations. I totally respect it & im glad I know now. It was simply the customer service I received. The simple things... I was so impressed the other day in the pouring rain where Big Y had a young man/worker volunteering to help people to their cars with an umbrella. He could not have been more polite and did not complain. I didn't need his assistance but he asked me several times if he could help me. Nice job Big Y! Came in to get a marrow bone and a slice of cheese pizza. No slices available I asked the guy he said he could make me one but it would be 15 min because he had been busy with dough. I decided to pass. Came back 10 minutes later after changing my mind and wanted to wait for a slice after all. I hoped he had started and maybe it would only be a 10min wait. He still haven't started anything. I was annoyed and he started to argue with/ over with me about how busy he was making dough for tomorrow. Super immature and unaccommodating. I have always been a fan of big y, and constantly say it is my go to grocery store. that is not the case anymore. I planned a surprise party for my friend and called in the party pizza at 3:10 to be picked up at 8:15, 45 mins before they close and 8:30 being their last pick up time. When I showed up, there was no pizza, someone "lost the ticket" or didn't write it down. i told them i was very upset i had a mouthful of people to feed and too late to call anywhere else. they refused to make my order. when i spoke to the manager, they did nothing to accommodate me. this is extremely unprofessional and big y just lost a huge costumer of over 15 years. this is a disgrace to the big y name. read more

I placed a large order for fried chicken for a picnic for about 100 people. Big Y did a marvelous job of having the food ready upon my arrival. The chicken tasted very good and all were extremely happy. I will gladly use Big Y again for any food order - in addition to shopping there! read more

I went to a birthday party on Tuesday where the birthday boy had this WONDERFUL cake that you could pull apart....imagine my surprise to find out the cake was individual cupcakes frosted on top to make a cake. Genius plan! The mom told me she got them from Big Y so I called them yesterday to find out how to buy one for my Girl Scout troop. I was told that you could order the cakes, but they had to be ordered 1 day in advance. I was so bummed, and decided to run to BJ's. Then the girl on the phone told me that they had some Christmas ones in stock in the shape of Snowmen and Christmas trees. I asked how many cupcakes were in the "cakes" and she said I could get either 15 or 30. Perfect! I told her I would be right over...she told me to look in the refrigerators when I got there. About 45 minutes later I got to the store. I was running late and frantically looked for the cupcake/cakes. After asking one of the women in the store about the 30 count cupcakes and having her tell me that the 30 count was a special order, I went ballistic. I ran to this store from 3 towns away to get the cake and I was running late to get back to work. She saw how angry I was and offered to make one in 15 minutes. I asked if I could buy two ($15.99 each) for the price of one ($26.99) and was refused. I asked for a manager and she said they could make a 30 count for me in a few minutes....not 15. It took about 10 minutes all together. They did it and did a beautiful job, but BOY WAS I PISSED. Especially because they kept saying take it easy they're only cupcakes. I'm like no this is my job that I have to get back to not the gym SHEESH! Photos of the cakes will be attached and overall I was happy, but I really feel that for the sake of $4.99 they put me at a disadvantage hence the reason for a 3 instead of a 4 star rating. Consistently out of stock on even the most basic items. This morning it was pork roasts and tissues. I mean, tissues? Come on folks. It's January in Connecticut for the love of Mike. The bakery had a vast array of pies... Cherry and Apple. That's it. Went to Shop Rite for the first time last week and was amazed at the fresh produce, meats and baked goods. I think my bill was about 30% lower than it would have been at Big Y. Too bad it's 10 miles from home. read more

This was my go to spot for groceries for years. I put up with the consistently grumpy cashiers because the selection and freshness of the food was good. Over the last 6 months or so the produce has been going downhill and has gotten to the point of disgusting. I bought a box of clementines a few weeks ago only to find that the bottom of the container was FILLED with mold. I gave it another shot this past week - different brand - and again, most were rotting. Time to look elsewhere. There are plenty of grocery stores in the area. It's a shame. read more

I'm so disappointed with The Big Y over the last few months. Their bakery goods have deteriorated ('apricot Danish' has some strange yellow-orange 'stuff' in the middle/the rest are over-cooked and burned) and the overall choice is so limited. Pizza is now greasy and it's pepperoni all the time. And the prices on items are slowly creeping up ( to pay for the remodeling?). And to top it off, I've received some unsolicited and unnecessary comments from one of your staff members that didn't sit well with me. The Big Y used to be my 'go-to' store for 15 years but the quality of your goods and service needs big improvement and has forced me to shop elsewhere. read more

Big Y in Monroe Ct, has the WORST customer service in the U.S.A.!!! (I've been to Shop Rite, Stop & Shop, Adams/IGA, Winn Dixie, Albertsons, & super markets all over the United States.) Big Y is the worst! (No one rating them on this site has given them a 5 star rating!) The store manager@ the Monroe CT. store is condescending & rude, when you ask to speak with a district manager or home office they give you Betty @ 1-800 - we don't care. When I repeatedly asked for Betty's supervisor she said I could not speak with anyone else, she told me I was making too big of a deal out of the incident. Way to blame the customer! They won't let you speak to a DM or anyone else so they can keep a lid on their poor customer service practices! Here's what happened, my order rang up & 4 items rang up @ the wrong price, so I told the cashier the price was ringing up wrong, her response was "I don't know" and she continued ringing up the rest of my items. According to store manager & Betty, the cashier did nothing wrong. So me paying $2.00 more than I should of was o.k. with them. Normally when you tell the cashier something is ringing up wrong their response should be "let me check that for you" not I don't know. "The customer is always right!" NOT at Big Y!!!!! read more
