Every so often, you have one of those experiences where you're delightfully surprised by someone or something that you just can't help telling everyone about it! I was in the mood for sushi after a workout at The Edge and made my way across the parking lot to Big Y who advertise "Fresh Sushi made daily". I found a sushi bar that was absolutely stunning. A huge display of beautifully colored varieties of Sushi with all the fixings! I was looking for something special and called the phone number given for special orders. A very nice woman named TiTi answered and asked if I could give her ten minutes which I agreed to. She came in and made me a special order right on the spot! I didn't realize she was actually coming from home to make it!! How sweet is that? She assured me several times it wasn't a problem and she was pleased to do it. Big Y, thank you for offering sushi and most of all, thank you for the best customer service I have ever experienced at a grocery store. TiTi is a true sushi artist and also a kind hearted person. She will make any special order you like and also does large party trays for groups. Oh yeah, did I mention the sushi was fresh, delicious, and extremely aesthetically pleasing? Was at the fresh meat counter on December 22nd. There were three butchers behind the counter. Granted, I know they were prepping to get the prime ribs out. I wasn't even acknowledged. Then a man with a suit on, came from the back and was talking to the butchers. Still, there is no acknowledgment from anyone. I ended up leaving after a few minutes of being ignored. You just lost a customer. read more

Waiting at the butcher shop this morning (11/9, 11:40ish am), only customer, two employees either measuring or butchering, there seemed to be some coaching on one end. The employee that seems to "be in charge" looks at me and puts his head back down to continue conversation with other employee. It's OK, I'm not in a rush. No, I was not acknowledged with "hey, we'll be right with you". A customer walks up to ask a question and is promptly greeted. I'm like whatever, it was a quick question. The "one in charge" looks at me and walks away. ANOTHER customer walks up, is promptly greeted, helped with her sausage request, he avoids looking at me and walks away. I avoid confrontation at all costs, so I walk away. Look back twice and he's staring at me. It certainly was no accident, or else it would have been an "oh my I am so sorry, how can I help you". Unfortunately this isn't the first experience with discrimination (not sure about racism; could've been me being a woman, being short, wearing yellow croc boots, etc.) I've had at multiple big y's throughout the years, however, just not as blatant. I hope their business manager reads this and actually looks at the cameras. Not cool. read more

The old white guy who is the manager needs to retire and be put in a nursing home. We briefly parked out front because my fiancé has a sprained ankle and he came running out (as fast as he's able to anyway) screaming at me and taking pictures of me/the car. Losing his mind. I think grandpa has dementia and needs to retire. We will never return to a big y again. Overpriced anyway. read more

2 days ago we called and ordered a deli party platter consisting of various deli meats from this Broad St Big Y location. We've ordered these deli platters before, they are always a great affordable option for a party. Anyways, the deli platter is not the issue here, I went this morning and picked it up...it was ready. My complaint is due to the lack of condiment packets. I asked for mustard and mayonnaise packets to go with the platter and was told they don't provide that. My question is... since when? Simply not true, we've ordered dozens of these deli platters from Big Y before and we were always provided with these. I decided to ask another employee when they stopped providing them, and this particular employee had no idea what I was talking about. I didn't argue with anyone and just gave up and went to the register to pay for my deli platter. I rate 2 stars for poor customer service and lack of knowledge from the employees. I should have asked for a manager but it wasn't that big of a deal, this is why I post my reviews here of both good and bad experiences. read more

I'll start off by saying I live very near the Meriden location. The store is never slammed, and at first I was of the mind that it would not last long. The store is very clean and the employees are mostly friendly and helpful. I do like their deli and bakery and they are the only store in the area that carries our preferred brand of pet food. If you are looking for something in particular the store will order it for you if it's not already part of their selection. The drawbacks to this store are these: although they have great selections at the butcher they are horribly overpriced even before COVID. Given the fact that you can order from places like Ferraro's meat and pick it up locally for less, I think they are really pricing themselves out of competition. I often overlooked higher prices on regular staples (again, this was the case even before COVID) because of the convenience, but with money tight for everyone during this trying time I must admit we don't shop here much anymore. If they were more competitive in their meat prices I would have a one stop shop, sadly this is not the case. read more

There are good points to this place and there are not so good points. Pro- Their bakery is niceish. Their muffins are REALLY good. Their deli is ok. They don't have boars head. But then they aren't super expensive in this one area either. They have an ok cheese selection. The cashiers are always nice. The produce always looks good. Cons- they seem to be a bit more expensive. their meat section is VERY expensive and I rarely find good deals in this area. they don't have enough cashiers or registers open. Overall its not a bad place to go depending on what you want. But I prefer Stop and Shop for meats. read more

Yes you will pay a little more- but the quality of the meats and produce here is far superior to anything you will find in Stop and Shop. The steaks we've had from here are awesome. Always clean and I've never experienced bad customer service. read more

This store is never busy, has great quality produce, and an amazing variety of speciality food. Also, their meats are top notch. This grocery store is more expensive than others but the selection and quality is worth it. This is a nice middle ground between something like Stop and Shop and Whole Foods. They have a dedicated area with gluten free, vegan, and other speciality items that are harder to find in other stores. read more

I have been coming to this location for a long time. I really love the fact that this location is never ever busy. Gives me time to get myself together to rummage through sales and walk around at my leisure. The staff is so nice and never had an issue there. They are helpful and will walk you to an item if you can't find it. I also love the butcher shop which is filled with some decent selections of meat (shop around because sometimes, you need to catch a sale). This location is exceptionally clean, and I have even ordered from their bake shop. All of which was easy and seamless. Overall, great place to shop locally! read more

Big-Y is one of those stores that wants you to think you are getting a deal, but in reality they are ripping you off. It's new and it's nice inside, but I would rather get a better price on my groceries than have a beautiful place to shop. read more

Top any store on their customer service. They have a butcher that will cut you what you want. The cold cuts while not boars head (it is not as good for you as you may think) I enjoy shopping there and will continue to shop there as my weekly grocery store. read more

Stopped by yesterday to find a rotesserie chicken - none available. Tried the meatloaf and was overcooked and a little dried out - won't buy that again....not very good at all. Great customer service/cashier though read more

On Sunday July 23 at 6pm, I went to the meat department to purchase some steaks. After having to iniate contact with the employee because I was not greeted, he immediately gave an attitude after asking about what was on sale. After he told me he had no idea, he told me to go to the front of the store to find out for myself which I did not do. After grunting several times he finally began to walk to the front of the store himself. He then stopped and spoke to someone who had specialist written on his name tag and said that I knew more than he did. The specialist I spoke to was equally as unhelpful. I left the store after not making a purchase due to the lack of competence. read more

I switched from Stop and Shop over 6 months ago to big Y because I like to support privately owned businesses instead of big chains. I was initially very pleased with the cleanliness of the store and the selection. The last two visit have been less than stellar and I may have to reconsider shopping elsewhere. No one has been at the carts to insure clean carts are give to the customers over the last two visits. Too few check out lines are open (especially for a Saturday on a holiday weekend). There is no one to help back your bags. After spending so much money on groceries the least a store can provide is someone to help pack them. I was rushing so hard to pack all the food that the cashier was shoving down the belt that my package of sushi spilled all over the place. He didn't ask if I would like a new one. He rather stood there watching me pack all my groceries by myself and didn't once say can I please help you. After i said something to him he said,"oh do you want help"? I said it would be nice you see me struggling here. I only had about two items left on the belt and he asked me where i want the chicken packed. I said in a paper bag, then he said you charge for them now. I grabbed my chicken, put in in the cart and went out the door Very disappointed with the level of customer service in this store. He had me so riled up that i didn't even get to use my $5.00 coupon. Not sure i will be back. read more

It's all in the name, World Class. Especially the employees! They are the friendliest faces I've ever seen, and they are always courteous and kind. Through my numerous shopping trips I have met some of their fabulous employees, such as Sam at the service desk, Danny as my cashier, Zach bagging, and Jose who kindly took my cart when I was done. I have been shopping at Big Y in Meriden for about a year now, since the Stop and Shop in Cheshire has not been customer friendly. I love Big Y. The store is very clean, the staff friendly and so helpful. The sales are great, especially buy 1 get 2 free. Of course one needs to know their prices, because some of the items that are not on sale can be expensive. Due to a spine and neck injury I need to ride in the electric carts, and I am pleased that they have 3 of them, and are always charged. I shop in the morning around 8:30, so I am always happy to see that the carts were still plugged in and charged over nite. So many other stores do not pay attention and charge their carts over nite, and then I can not use them, nor shop. So I am happy. read more

I love shopping at Big Y. The cashiers are always friendly and you can always find someone to help you if you have a question. The produce is fresh and I love their bakery. We now only order our cakes from there for special occasions. I recently printed a picture off the internet on a plain piece of paper, took it to Big Y bakery and asked, can you put this on the cake? Not only did they get the picture on the cake(edible of course), but the decoration around the photo was absolutely some of the best I've seen. Everyone at work raved about it and asked where the cake was purchased. So you ask, did it taste as good as it looked, and I will tell you that it was delicious. I also love the World Class deli meats. They do not look unappetizing like some of the other deli brands. The turkey is like eating turkey right from your Thanksgiving bird, no exaggeration. I hope they keep the Meriden store open, as I've heard a rumor that it may be closing. Lets hope it is just a rumor because the store is always clean and neat and the shelves are very easy to shop. I really do love shopping at this location and would be very sad if it were to close. Oh, and for those who think it is more expensive than other stores around. I really think it is comparable, plus its in a great location so that you can mail things, go to the gym, do some shoe and clothes shopping, grab a bite to eat, and grocery shop, all in one little area. read more
