How can you say no to these flavourful pickle creations!?
    Julia B.

I walk through the doors of Big Wheel Burger and the friendly woman at the front cash register smiles at me saying "Deep fried pickles to go?". Since the first time I made that order she has not forgotten who I am or what I eat. The service is exceptional. The employees are so kind and take the time to connect with their customers. The fried pickles and the variety of flavoured fries are fantastic. The burgers (both vegan and normal) are average. If you are a coconut fan I highly recommend trying the pina colada smoothie!

Now this is a good burger.

Is it wrong that I am coming up with reasons to travel home to Victoria just to visit Big Wheel? My family had raved about it, but I didn't KNOW just how good it was until I visited their new location over the holidays this year. This place doesn't have a lot of space. Maybe, 8 tables? MAYBE? A small bar? So, be prepared to do takeout if there's no tables. The space is clean and bright, but definitely meant to get you in and out - this is fast food. GREAT fast food, but, know what you're getting. I had a gluten free burger and fries and HOT DAMN were they good. The quality of the beef was excellent and it was well cooked - not too pink, not charred to death, and deliciously seasoned. The gluten free bun did NOT fall apart in your hands, which is more than I can say for most places. The fries were classic - crispy, salted, addictive. \ I used to dream about In-N-Out Burger -with the nearest being in California, I don't get to go too often. Now I dream about Big Wheel - it's DEEELICIOUS, only a ferry ride away, and I can't wait to go back.

    Big Wheel Beyond Veggie Burger

Stopped in at the Uptown Gateway location ravenous after a bike ride on The Goose. I've been meaning to try their new vegan burger. I was previously disappointed with the original Veggie Burger - the cheese-stuffed patty was dry, hard and rather flavourless - but was pleased to see a new addition with the Beyond Vegan Burger (only available at this Gateway location). The patty is from the hugely popular Beyond Meat company, a game changer in the vegan market with investors like Bill Gates and Leo DiCaprio. They only use plant based ingredients, no wheat or soy or GMO. Their products are difficult to find in Canada so I was stoked to see Big Wheel serving it (Fish on Fifth in Sidney and Ma Miller's in Langford are other restaurants offering it on their menu). The Beyond Burger is a big improvement with texture and flavour - the patty is thin and quite meat-like - topped with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and a tasty spicy sauce on a squishy bun. Two thumbs up! This is a difference maker and Big Wheel has now elevated their veggie burger to stand alongside their famous meat burgers. I haven't had fast food in years and I could get used to this. The only problem is the burgers have no description on menu board and they are not that big - I could happily eat two - and at $10 each that's an expensive feast!

Dried out, cold, tasteless chicken sandwich. With a broken up bun. And it took 45 minutes from ordering. How they think this is quality food is beyond me.

Loved checking out the new Big Wheel Burger location!

When the Bathroom is disgusting and has no toilet paper it makes you wonder what the kitchen looks like. Won't be back so can't recommend.

Best vanilla milkshakes! I'll go just for a shake. Burgers are pretty good too but you certainly pay for it.

Although there are many variations with different toppings these days, just like poke, my favorite way is still the classic Quebecoise poutine just loaded with squeaky curds and gravy. The large is enough for two to share, unless you plan on making it your entire meal which I wouldn't judge especially since you can't find ones with the squeaky curds back in the US.

This restaurant is essentially a small shack on the waterfront level with some outdoor picnic table seating. It's conveniently located next to a large pay lot, so there's plenty of parking. When we stopped by after driving off the ferry on a Friday evening, it was relatively quiet and we were able to place our order with only one party ahead. Since the fries are freshly fried, it took a couple of minutes to assemble. Classic Poutine, Large ($15 CAD) - As a classic poutine, this is a pretty simple dish. The fries are clearly fresh cut, with even a little potato heel in the mix. They are cleanly double fried, allowing the requisite tenderness on the interior combined with the crisp exterior, even holding up to the gravy poured over the top. The gravy is pretty standard. It seems to be from a powdered base, so it's mainly there to contribute sodium rather than any robust beefy or vegetal flavors. They add a ton of cheese curds on top, enough to cover the entire surface of the metal tray the poutine comes in. The curds are fresh, milky tasting, and fabulously squeaky. They are still distinct with some substance instead of being melted into a puddle from the hot gravy. (4/5) While I can't really compare L'Authentique to anything in Montreal (seeing that I've never visited), I thought it was pretty good. It's clearly good enough to satisfy my poutine craving at least! Washrooms - No public ones, but if it's not too busy, the staff allows customers to use the staff washroom.

You're not coming here for an authentic food experience (coming from Hawaii, I can certainly attest to that), but they do offer some of the dishes that speak to the spirit of Hawaiian fare and so "mahalo" to Kahuna for honouring the Hawaiian culture and ways in Victoria - thousands of miles away from its inspiration! === 2. FOOD The dishes may not necessarily cater to those from Hawaii (things have been adapted for the mainland - like all other ethnic foods brought to North America) but the creative dish names do provide some reminders of home. Of note, they have a few standard desserts including a lillikoi cheesecake and a haupia pie that they make in-house. Today, I tried the Loco Moco and it's perhaps a healthier (?) but very different interpretation of a typical loco moco one gets in Hawaii. Perhaps it's a local adaptation of the dish (for Hawaiians: note that there is a lot more vegetables on this, much less gravy and portion size, and different macaroni used and no brown/fried rice available) - but overall the dish is tasty. === 3. SERVICE Soft-spoken, well-mannered, it's like the Canadian version of Hawaiian service: caring but without any of the fun sarcasm and localisms one finds in a local Hawaiian joint. I noticed they were attentive to dine-in patrons and everyone wears a brighter-coloured shirt that speaks to the aloha shirts found in Hawaii. === 4. ENVIRONMENT Good, bright, modern, and clean, the Hawaiian motifs are visible throughout be it in colour palette, light fixtures, decorations, and even the t-shirts on sale. While it's not ginormous, you could bring a sizeable party of perhaps up to 12 here. Groups of 4 or less would be best served on a daily basis. Those with wheelchairs and baby strollers would find get in and out easily. Parking appears to just be up to your luck with a street spot or in one of the private paid lots nearby.

Located on Fort St, there's several shops, restaurants & bakeries on this street. BC knows how to do Smash Burgers right! Taste, presentation, flavour ALL on point! One of the bestest burgers ever indeed. While we don't have In-N-Out Burger up here in Canada - this is probably the next best thing. The thin cut fries are excellent. Get an order of regular fries. OMG the Chocolate Shake here is absolutely sensational! It looks small & unassuming, but don't be fooled - it's the real deal when it comes to quality shakes! Be sure to tell the cashier you want your shake after you finish your burger. I do not recommend you get it to go - have it right away once you've finished your meal. Also if you are one to carry around your own metal or plastic straw, bring it here! This shake should not be associated with paper straws = sadness! I usually get a single burger, but if you really love that beef & prefer a double patty, then go for it. The beef is right here at BC!
