    Traditional Poutine
    Nicole K.

While walking around downtown harbor, we decided to get a traditional poutine to eat outside since the weather was nice. It was okay, not the best poutine I've had. It was crowded both inside and outside. With the takeout, they also gave free sunglasses and candy. One downfall is they forget to include utensils so it was a bit messy and hard to eat.

Nice little local tavern. Jennie was our server and did a fantastic job. We ordered their wings and poutine and the food was awesome. I had a local beer and it was refreshing. I highly recommend this place, it can be a little loud but it is definitely worth the price.

Killer dive bar vibe and excellent food here. The chicken wings with Siracha honey were crispy and the sauce was delicious and just slightly spicy. I love the perogis - they come with carmalized onion and bacon, and the poutine was the best we had in Victoria (we tried three kinds across the weekend). The gravy was not too salty and the cheese curds tasted creamy and fresh. The service was great, we asked for a holiday shot and she brought us a yummy little concoction with candy cane. Highly recommend this spot. It feels like a neighborhood bar and had a good selection of bites and drinks.

Stop here on our one day ashore off our cruise and it was nice to find vegan poutine!! And it was good. Order some Mac n cheese bite as well, sorry not vegan but tasty. Had a local dark beer and a cider. It was pleasant to sit on their patio since the forecast showed showers. The bartender was really nice and helpful with finding transportation back to the ship.

Went here on St. Patrick's Day and it had a great atmosphere! Only had to wait about 10-15 minutes before a table opened up. We had a few rounds of beers and ordered poutine that was definitely not stingy on the cheese and gravy. This is a great local pub to check out if you're ever in Victoria.

Sunny patio at 7:30 at night

While in Victoria, BC during a port stop on a cruise we went on an Ale Trail excursion and the…read morefirst of three stops was Whistle Buoy. Talk about hitting out of the park with the first stop! Whistle Buoy is located in a Market Square that's a beautiful open air area surrounded by shops, boutiques, restaurants, assorted businesses, and vast tracts of land with chairs and tables. Since it's surrounded by buildings on all four sides the wind would be challenged to ruffle your hair once inside. For this stop of the Ale Trail excursion we were each allowed one glass (not a taster...a full 12oz glass) of one brew. They have roughly a dozen taps that run the typical gamut of beer styles. I immediately gravitated toward the Shaft Coffee Stout. Not my usual go-to, (I'm usually more of an IPA / Pale Ale kinda guy) but something about "Dark. Coffee. Chocolate" grabbed my attention (Here's the part where Jim has an advantage. Jim's wife doesn't drink beer, so Jim gets her selection, too, so she (ok, I) chose the Froth Hazy Pale for hers (ok, for me).) I didn't expect the highlight of the excursion to be the very first beer I had, but the Shaft Coffee Stout was quite possibly the best beer I've ever had. It was smooth and rich and had such an amazing flavor. Honestly, it was more like dessert. I'm not saying my wife's beer (ok, my 2nd) wasn't awesome, it's just that the Shaft set the bar REALLY high. ( I'm just talkin' 'bout Shaft! ) Our group sat in the outdoor, covered beer garden, the weather was slightly overcast, and we were surrounded by like-minded beer lovers (except my wife, who donates to my cause.) As we sat the Market Square was busy with life as people walked their dogs, visited businesses, and a group of elementary school kids was escorted through the square. Sometimes it's nice to sit back and watch the world go by. The restrooms (gender neutral, thank you) are small...ok, tiny. There's barely enough room to change your mind. I do have to call attention to two things, though. First, it has the tiniest sink I've ever seen. Surely this thing had to be custom made. Second, they have a Code of Conduct posted on the wall, which I genuinely appreciated. Nothing outrageous, just a focus on respect and common decency. If I were able to get Shaft Coffee Stout at home I'd never leave home (actually I would just to get more Shaft Coffee Stout). It was only a brief visit to Whistle Buoy Brewing, but if I ever found myself living in Victoria, BC, there is no doubt this is where I'd hang out.

For our flight, we chose Marketplatz German Pils, fuzzy peach sour, lemon lime fizz and the Shaft coffee stout. My favorite two were the Pils and peach sour, the stout was also solid, not a fan of the lemon lime fizz tho.

It's a small place consisting of maybe 10 tables or less. They had small vases of real flowers on their tables and displayed throughout which is a really nice touch. My friend ordered a single patty burger and fries with a drink. Sadly they ran out of chicken wings which was what I wanted so I ordered nothing. I did take a bite out of the burger and shared the fries and drink tho. The fries were on point! Not too thick, not too thin. Really crispy outside and yet still soft and warm inside and they gave us a good portion of fries too. Thanks for that! I do hope if I happened to be in the area next time they have more chicken wings. Until next time...

The next day, before heading to Butchart Gardens, I stopped in. The spot is just behind the Parliament building in a bright yellow house with indoor and outdoor seating. The menu was short and to the point. I ordered the double smash burger with onions and all the trimmings, plus a canned soda. Took it to go and ate it on the shuttle ride. That burger... the best smash burger I've ever had. Flavorful, seasoned well, not too heavy--just perfect. The fries were good and well-seasoned too, but way too much food for me. Next time I'd skip the fries and stick to the burger. I've been bragging about this burger ever since. Highly recommend!
