We reserved 7 rooms in May of 2026 for a local event near Bland. The rooms are very clean and comfortable. The staff and owner are friendly and accommodating. We spent our evenings socializing on the large deck and gazebo. They also have a large commercial ice maker to quickly fill a cooler for the day's activities. We will definitely stay here again next year when we return. read more

We stayed here on our first trip to Florida in 1987. Loved the view of the mountains from the deck. Sadly every subsequent trip put us far from here by bedtime. In 2019 we made a point of making this our first night destination, because of the fond memory of 30 years earlier. Same charming place, now run by the second generation. I greatly miss these motels where you park 10 feet from your room. I hope The Big Walker Mountain Motel keeps going well into the future. read more

So it would have been perfectly okay with me if this had been just another older motel, with tired but clean furnishings. We just really needed a safe place to rest. That's what it seemed like reading previous reviews. But that's not really what this is! It does have so much of the original stuff, like 70's globe lamps on the driveway leading up, vintage carved wooden dressers and bedframe, and big glass picture windows framing the mountain view. But it's all been lovingly restored, with lots of respect given to the aesthetics of the time. New mattresses -- yeah, always a good idea! Also brand new coverlets in abstract colorways of orange and amber and new floral tapestry upholstery on the chairs. Deer print wallpaper. I'm in groovy heaven. A great deal for the less than $90 we were quoted for a two queen room. I'd return if I'm ever able to get to Virginia again. read more

Nothing special and not exceptionally cheap (our room was $74.95 plus tax). It was clean and very close to the Appalachian Trail, which is why we stayed there. To get to the AT, set your GPS for Brushy Mountain Outpost. There is a parking lot, and you can hop on the trail. We loved that part! The owner of the hotel was pleasant, but the place is "no frills". We wanted a hot shower (yep) and a comfortable bed (mostly, except for the pillows). Location is right off the highway, extremely convenient. It felt safe and was quiet in the room. The Dairy Queen/convenience store/gas station across the street was a plus - clean and good prices and good coffee. read more

I was on a road trip and starting to get tired. I saw a sign on the interstate for Big Walker Motel and decided to stop. I was greeted by the owner who was very friendly and who told me all about the history of the motel and the area. I checked into my room and found it to be just as he described .... clean and comfortable (I was asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow). The motel was very clean and it brought me back to a simpler time in life when the roadside motel was the norm. I will definitely stay here again while traveling in the area. As a matter of fact, the motel would actually be a good base while exploring the areas attractions, scenery, auto racing and parks. read more

Absolutely phenomenal!! One of the cleanest rooms we've ever stayed in!! The shower was gorgeous and the service was just incredible. So friendly and helpful! There are so many cool antique pieces to look at - outside and in the lobby too. There was a small fridge and microwave in our room too, which were unexpected and the tv was great! It was quiet and comfortable - everything you could ask for! We will definitely be back! They made our first road trip together as fiances a very positive memorable experience! read more

Most unfriendly hostess at the front desk. She misspelled our last name, when we corrected her she not only did not apologize but she blamed her coworker for it. Who cares... it's easily misspelled just say sorry and move on. The rooms are old, decors are old, and no updates were done for many many years. No decent restaurants near by. On first sight, I thought this is either a quaint little mountain inn or a great place film a horror movie. After a fuss-free check-in I opened the door to my room and was grateful to confirm the former. Clean, quiet, with a good shower and wonderful mountain view. The outdoor seating is a wonderful amenity; you can relax and enjoy the fresh air. I would recommend you bring your own pillow, as those provided were very hard, but that's a minor detail. There was an in-room fridge and microwave, which you hardly ever see. It was a great place to spend a night! read more

I met the owner Willie who is a 2nd generation owner. He conveyed that there has been a large investment of time and money in the last year. If there was a way to give this motel ZERO stars I would have.... I have never been to a more disgusting motel in my life. I have stayed in hostels all around the world and it's scary to think the biggest dump I have ever seen is right here in the United States. It's high atop a hill overlooking the expressway. Greeted by a mute staff member with the social IQ of stone blind mule.... she couldn't express the room(s) available but was quick to point out that the room was non-refundable .... got to the room, which turned out to be the only room available that night and we were greeted by dozens of flying bugs and crickets and spiders all over the room. There was feces in the toilet, a dead mouse in the tub and all the towels were stained with dirt and blood and rust from the water. Getting through the foul odor in the room was a challenge all in itself. All of the bedding was disgusting and had cigarette burns covering a large portion .... pillow cases, duvee, sheets... all of it. What the hell!!! Air conditioning didn't work but did blow out another wonderfully foul odor when turned on. We called 2 dozen other hotels all within 50 miles and due to a NASCAR race in Bristol there was nothing available anywhere. This place should be burned to the ground! read more

Good motel, good price, good views. I stayed at this motel (for the first time) on a Monday night in October 2020. It was good. No complaints. Since this is as motor lodge, I was able to park in front of my room, which is good for social distancing during a pandemic: no corridors, no elevators. I especially enjoyed the views from the outdoor seating near the room: views of mountains, valleys, and the interstate. Great place to count trucks. But who does that? When I awoke in the morning, the view was very interesting because fog was nestled in all the valleys, creating a beautiful and unusual picture. This motel is high up on a hill. Lower down on the hill, almost adjacent to the motel, is a gas station with large convenience store. This does not ruin the view entirely, but it does provide a useful service for travelers. The motel is located in Bland, VA. I suppose the area is quite bland if you are a teenager looking for exciting things to do in a remote, rural area. But for me, the awesome mountain scenery is the attraction. I would definitely stay here again. read more

We stayed there this Aug. (2020) and the owner was very helpful, kind and professional. The room was clean and well kept and I give it 5 stars for how perfectly things worked in the room. The door closed gently and quietly, the microwave door the same, there was a little added shelf of wood which was hand crafted to fit exactly that space. It had a pretty good view. It had these fun outside features which were nice too; a gazebo, and some decorations. It was "kitchy" in it's decor which seems perfectly appropriate for a Motel in Bland VA. I understand they get a lot of AT hikers there during the high season. We'll stay there again when we hike Cascade Falls and visit Big Walker Lookout again. read more

If I could leave no stars I would. It was pouring the snow to the point we couldn't see on the interstate, so we checked in to this motel. The owners were very pushy about staying here. We got to our room and stayed for about an hour and the power went out. They did not have a generator, so the heat did NOT work and at this point there was a foot of snow outside. Some of the other guests had a baby and I couldn't imagine the position they were in with no heat. Nobody bothered to tell us anything until we walked to the lobby and asked, and all they could say was the power would be back on at 8 am. We then asked them their advice on the roads and they wouldn't tell us much of anything other than "we just needed to stay there for the night". There was also a camera on the front of the TV in the room which is highly illegal. We finally left at 4 am because the power was still out and the owners were still trying to pressure us into staying until checkout. I would NOT recommend this place to anybody. read more

I've stayed here at The Big Walker several times. The motel is a bit old, but it's been in business forever! The view from the big swing is something so beautiful, that shows me all the beauty of the mountains! The price was about standard, and the people that run it, are very kind. I stayed here for a night while hiking through the area on the Appalachian Trail. It's not a Hampton Inn but I had no problems or issues with the room or the cost. Check-in was quick & painless and the sheets & towels were clean. If you want to spend $100 on a room, there are plenty of places along the interstate. If you want a $50 room and a good night's sleep, the Big Walker should fit the bill. read more

I just read the previous review of the Big Walker Motel, and I can hardly believe it's the same place. Maybe the current manager wasn't there back in 2011. We stayed at the Big Walker the night before beginning a backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail. The room was basic, but very clean, with a faint smell of bleach in the linens. After 3 days of hiking in cold, wet weather, we lucked into a ride into town, and we spent another night back at the Big Walker, warming up and drying out. The manager and her husband were friendly and helpful. We ended up staying at the motel for 3 nights, and paying the husband to give us a ride to and from different points along the trail each day, for a very reasonable fee. I'd recommend the Big Walker to other hikers, or to any budget minded traveler who just wants a decent place to take a shower and get a good night's sleep. read more

Worst place I've ever stayed. Me and my daughters stayed one night worst night of our lives. The door didn't lock when we called the front desk they told us to put a chair in front of the door instead of us changing rooms No coffee pot in room no coffee anywhere at 6am..the TV cable didn't work. Shower didn't drain. Rooms are out of date bad the wallpaper looked like Christmas wrapping paper. Exit 47 on I-77 is the place for gas, Premium Coffee, quick road food, and the exceptional, All American Big Walker Motel. The sign says only MOTEL. Gas is circle K ... quick, as cheap as any, and the convenience store has most things you'll need.. The Coffee is Exceptional . . . Choices included five sustainable, premium types when I visited. My choice was the Peruvian. Circle K has a major chain chicken and burger place too. Fast friendly service, good road food, quiet compared to the other exits. You'll be in and out in less time than it takes to be seated at Crackerbarrel. The Subway is on the other side of the exit. It's the standard sub place. Big Walker Motel is a gem. Prices around $50 a night. Recently renovated rooms: new paint, new wall paper . New shower/tubs ... new sink area, with easy charging outlet; new mid-sized refrigerator ( you'll have to turn it on); and new micro wave ovens. Two comfy sitting chairs, the standard desk and chair Two beds with new bedding and linens. . . . All on one floor, you park right at your door, no elevator needed. The patio area overlooks a 180 degree view of the valley and the mountain range. The Fall Colors are amazing. The perfect place to recover from a long days drive. . . . You can walk down to the Circle K and back. It's good exercise. . . . Rooms are quiet, I barley heard the I-77 road noise. The ice machine is at the south end, and there is a drink machine . There is a pizza delivery service ... and a shuttle for Appalachian Trail hikers ... Contact the motel for info. Free WiFi . . . It's fast, almost as fast as my premium service at home. No password needed, just connect and go. . . . Yes, you can drive in, use the WiFi, and then leave . . but you are missing staying at the original, all american Big Walker Motel. Hard to find an American owned and operated motel these days but this one is great!! Been staying here on and off for twenty years plus for a week each time and have never been disappointed. My wife and I stayed in here while hiking the AT in 2013. That motel has a charming setting and wonderful view. The staff was incredibly friendly and extremely helpful. We easily arranged shuttles including one to West Virginia, at very reasonable rates. They made our stay there most enjoyable. Don't change a thing! read more

We spent 4 nights at the Big Walker in early September and enjoyed our stay immensely. Rooms are clean, spacious and comfortable, and each one has a large picture window that offers a scenic mountain view. Parking is just outside your door. We have been returning to this motel every spring and summer for over 20 years now and service has always been top-notch and the staff and owner always friendly and accommodating. This year we noticed renovations including new chairs and a new fridge and microwave which we really appreciate. There are 2 gazebos, some Adirondack chairs and a picnic table so one can sit out and enjoy the view. It is close to the Appalachian and other hiking trails and is about 15 minutes away from Wytheville. There is a gas station and a Dairy Queen just down the hill and a Subway a bit farther away. There are chain motels in the area but we feel none are as uniquely pleasant and relaxing as this one. read more

i went there about two years ago in late september, 2010 around 930 to 10 pm. it was right off of 77 and being a forty something year old woman i could park right outside my room which i loved and it was right off the highway maybe less than 1/3 more or less or less than 1/2 a mile. i love the view but i left around 630 am it was still dark. it was cheap maybe 45.00 dollars, i think. people were ok, room was okay. friendly people at least they spoke english. cheap and convenient. it was right across a big gas station which helped caused i need getting gas i think the thing i like most was the scenery and the mountains. i really had no complaints at all cheap, clean, and closed to 77. if i had to do it over i would off checked in early i hate checking in after sunset. not good for women who could go attacked and be careful if you are traveling alone. i would give it a 6 out of a 10 rating. cheap, clean, and somewhat comfortable. and parked outside my room was very good. and rooms maybe there was twenty, i think. only a couple people was staying there. take care. beautiful location i would give that at 10 out of a 10. after going back on 77 around seven am, still slightly dark, be careful of the up/downs of the highways and the mountains can get a little spooky if you are not used to it. take care. theresa read more
