I found Vics BBQ via Instagram and had been wanting to try this place since I started following them. Seeing the pictures posted on social media hyped me up and I couldn't wait to try it. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. The meat wasn't seasoned as I thought it would be. For two sandwich combos it was about $30 which in my opinion was pricey. Drink not included. Great service and good food! I never remember when they're open so I always stop by whenever I get lucky and drive past during business hours. Their bbq sauces are delicious, and their meats are always perfectly cooked. Not much decorative wise inside, but the outdoor seating is gorgeous and pretty spacious! Wish their tri tip had a bit more flavor, and that their bread was kept fresh, but tri tip sandwiches are still my go to! Love their mac and cheese as well! Pretty pricey but ultimately worth it if you enjoy leftovers. Their banana pudding has been tasting like onions recently. I was really excited to try a sandwich from "Big Vic's" BBQ here in Turlock. I have heard some goods things about this place and wanted to compare it to some other BBQ joints in the area. Today I put it up against "The Tri Tipery" in Balico, CA just outside Turlock. Here's the breakdown of the head to head. Big Vic's sandwich ($15.00) was served on a bun (which I personally don't like) with bbq sauce, onions, and pickles. It is a standard serve vessel but come on man add another $.50 cents to the price and get this on a roll. The meat had good flavor, was tender, juicy and weighed (meat only) 9.5oz where the standard serve is 8oz. I bought the meal and received a side of potato salad (no macaroni salad available) and was not something I enjoyed. The potato salad was more mashed than salad and the taste, to me, was just off. The Tri Tipery sandwich ($16.00) was served naked on a toasted roll. No nothing on it but you could get bbq sauce on the side. The roll made the sandwich look great and added a nice crunch to the sandwich. The meat had decent flavor but was a little on the dry side and only weighed (meat only) 4.5oz, well below the standard 8oz serving. I bought the meal which came with a 12oz side of macaroni salad which I really enjoyed. The shortage of meat on a sandwich from a BBQ joint is just unforgivable. With this comparison, if was to go back for a second serve (which I will), I will be heading back to Big Vic's. A good sandwich with a good serving portion and flavor. Get a better roll to serve on and this is a really good sandwich . Of course this review is only my opinion and take it for what it is. read more

Ehhhhhhhh.......I am a brisket connoisseur and Big Vic's brisket is ughhhhh mediocre. Brikset flavor was good but it was soooooo tough!!! Brisket normally falls apart between your fingers but their brisket is sooooo tough that when I tried pulling it apart it wouldn't even come apart. BBQ Sauce was delicious but honestly they didn't put more than a teaspoon on our massive sandwich. I ordered an elote and it was $13, sorry but if you're going to charge $13 for corn in a cup then at least roast and cut the corn from the cob and do NOT sell people a cup filled with low quality corn from a can. I have followed Vic's on instagram for at least 3 years. Food pictures always look amazing. So today had the chance to go to Turlock and see for myself. What a let down. 2 people -$47 no drinks and not a pickle in sight!!! Yet they are shown in pics on instagram? The sides were terrible. Mac n cheese nothing special. beans horrible and potato salad blah. A MISS on all three and didn't even get 1/4 way on any of them. Tossed. The tri tip was ok Brisket was fair and ribs just down right horrible. Decided to not risk dessert as much as I wanted to try the banana pudding cup. My Family & I walked to buy food to go. The 2 nice Guys were very attentive & friendly giving us our order. However, they did get very busy after we walked in, giving us a beef ribs order of a small amount instead of large order. Our rib order had to had been the customer after or before us of wrong orders. The register girl assured us our order was complete. When we got home it was not. I tried to call when we got home to let them know & if they could see their cameras confirming we were the customers placing that specific order since we noticed their cameras are very close to customers ordering. This place does not have a regular phone line where employees answer to this business. Only a recording of what it seemed like it forwards to the "manager" or we assume the owner. We left 2 messages. The owner did not care to return call by compensating or making sure to take our name down to give us a free order since we bought something that was a smaller meat order. Some type of sorry or apology. This place only cares of making money & not giving excellent customer service so customer keeps returning or so customers can give a good reputation. We will definitely let our many family & friends not to go there anymore. That this place really rips people off & owner doesnt care of their customers! Big Vic's is our go to for meat, Mac and cheese and potato salad. They are great for catering for groups and are enjoyed by all humans, the new ones and the old ones. Big Vic's was just what I was hoping for: a central Texas styled barbecue joint right here in the middle of California. California's barbecue is very varied and developing it's own multiplicity of direction even as the original Santa Maria style BBQ takes a back seat being hard to even locate. Big Vic's brought memories of many of the "old time" BBQ joints we recent visited in Texas, and was like a breath of fresh BBQ smoke to our senses. We belong to a group calling itself " East and West Seeking Barbecue's Best". A full report on Central Texas Q will be forthcoming, not yet knowing where it will appear. The West branch has started preliminary runs on the Central Valley BBQ scene, some of which will appear here on Yelp. We recently did Big Vic's, and were all extremely happy with his fare. His brisket and ribs rated right up there with highly graded favored Texas spots. Chicken was fantastic. Pulled pork and tri tip, although completely eaten, received slightly Lower marks. Sides were average or better and desserts knocked home runs. Our overall rating was 4.5 (out of 5) on our averaged scorecards. Vic was helpful and very knowledgeable about BBQ. We will return for a final evaluation when the eastern group can meet up with the weathers in the valley. More details will be contained in that final report. I treated myself and my father-in-law today for a belated Father's Day gift and bought two bones from them. I am very happy I did. I heard about this place on a Facebook group I found recently of places to go during this whole Plandemic(I mean Pandemic) thing is going on and had to give it try. What I have read from previous customers was it was exceptional great BBQ, will return back, great brisket, OMG freaking delish, great services and so on. Although I do agree with formal customers, I only agree to a certain extent. Now before I proceed with my honest review keep in mind every person has different opinion and critics differently. Don't throw me on the bbq grill and leave me to burn. Appearance/First impression When one arrives to their location it had a great atmosphere, clean, 2 members managing the front while I believe the owner Vic managing the BBQ grill. The concept is fairly simply to follow, place your order on the left, pay for your order on the right. The menu was hanged on the way with the left menu being for large quantities of meats while the right menu for sandwiches and side dishes. I personally like this concept and what helps them a lot is its simple to follow so you won't get lost in the sauce approach. Menu As I previously mention there are 2 menus they have at Big Vic's. One they sells by lbs of brisket, pulled pork, ribs, tri tip. The other menu has pulled pork sandwich, trip sandwich, pull pork nachos, brisket sandwich, and some side dishes. - I went ahead and went with the brisket sandwich and the tri tip sandwich. The tri tip burger consisted of only the bun meat and the bbq sauce they offer(Which is only one sauce flavor) the brisket sandwich consisted of the bun, pickles, onions, and bbq sauce. To my impression it passes and both meats were flavorful yet the tri tip was actually better in my humble opinion on overall taste. Now, where it could improve I would have to say is on the sesame buns. The brioche sesame seed bun seem to me not on on par with the great taste of the meats. The bun had somewhat no taste and was more of a meat holder only. In other words I should have just bought the meat by them selves if that was the case. If the buns would have been a bit more flavorful I would have enjoyed the sandwich a bit more. By flavorful maybe if it was freshly baked, warm, maybe added some melted butter on top , or even a more doughy consistency it would have been great. Overall I give the tri-tip sandwich 1st place while the brisket second place. I would also put an asterisk next to the 1st place and second place saying " Buns need improvement or buns don't contribute to this standing. Price As far as prices go, don't expect cheap fast food prices. In other words, the big man Vic puts a lot work into his BBQ, and should be accounted for. When it comes to meats individually they charge a fair prices, and when it comes to burgers and I believe nachos they came in at $12 plus tax. Side dishes I don't quite remember prices but there wasn't many options to begin with. $12 plus tax for a small/medium burger seems a bit steep for my personally. Would I come back and pay $12 for a burger again here? Absolutely not. Why? Plain and simple..side dish not included. Now, I do understand bbq joints don't work like that. You pay individually for each thing end of of story. But personally maybe if this place included at most a soft drink or small side of fries then yes the $12 price tag is acknowledged. I just don't agree on the $12 price tag heavily riding on the meat being bbq. Maybe a $8 price would pass and please. Conclusion Big Vic's bbq is what it is. Another bbq joint selling your typical bbq menu findings, at your typically bbq joint prices. From ribs, brisket, pulled pork, to tri tip. I love seeing people rave about new restaurants, let alone love to support local businesses but every business big or small should be equally rated. Yes, the bbq is good, but not OMG delicious. Would I come back? Sorry, but I would much rather fire up the traegar grill and make som bbq myself. Was it memorable? Despite the owner stating it's not consider Texas BBQ but rather California BBQ I would have to say once is okay. Nothing really stood out to me to make me want to want to come back and become a regular. Do you recommend this place? Of course, if you love bbq for you and the family, have at it.
