I'm on the Lucky Starliner on my way to Boston from NYC and thought I should write the review now…read morejust in case I never make it off the bus alive. Please heed my advice and spend an extra $20 for Megabus or Greyhound/Peter Pan. Trust me, you'll be grateful in the end. As I'm writing this review, there is dirty water from a busted air-con system dripping on my shoulder. And it's not only me: a woman two rows in front of me is draped in a towel, three rows in front of her a couple is trying to plug a leak with their own sweater, and the driver's seat is completely soaked. Four seats are roped off and plastic bags filled with brown water are suspended from the ceiling. Apart from the broken air con, the smell of the bathroom is permeating throughout the bus. I've travelled in the 3rd world and I don't mind roughing it out when I have to - but this just isn't worth it. I'm amazed at the number of 3 star reviews for this company. I'll give them zero to one. I've had great experiences with "Apex" (from NY to Philadelphia) and am not opposed to Chinatown buses as a way to get from one place to another. Help me to boycott Lucky Star an maybe they'll change their ways (...and fix their broken air conditioner!). This review isn't exaggerating anything at all. Please stay away from Lucky Star. (Addition from Boston: we made it but my bag, which was in the overhead compartment inside the bus, was soaked with water - getting half of my clothes wet. Lucky Star Bus = very bad way to begin a vacation).

He scanned our ticket and we boarded. The bus was pretty full, so we ended up sitting separately. The above head storage bins are kind of tight, so I had to take something out of my over stuffed backpack to manage to wiggle it in. While my purse sat on my lap. I liked the foot rest and the hook on the handle on the seat in front of me. Trash bags were hung here and there. Looks like they also provided small bottles of water for us, though we had to grab those ourselves. The electric plugs didn't seem to work, but perhaps the ubs plugs in the ceiling did. Our driver was a great communicator. He set expectations so we knew that we had a 20 min rest stop before arriving at Baltimore, and pointed out things to help us to pay attention and to get back to the right bus. He warned us that given current construction that we were sure to arrive later than what our tickets said, and gave us his best eta given the circumstances. Another passenger later commented that the bus bathroom was clean. We kind of ended up being dropped off on a brightly painted bridge in the middle of no where - perhaps on Maryland Ave?, by a bus stop. A short walk from Penn Station.

I agreed, thinking it would be a great opportunity to show her how we used to travel "back in my day." I started by looking for Greyhound tickets, only to discover they don't service Columbia (which felt personal). That's when I found Wanda Coach. My wife, who wisely stayed home, read multiple reviews and told me, "Absolutely not." I ignored her--because, I thought: "how bad could it be?" As it turns out, the reviews were not exaggerating. The bus was old, the suspension launched us around like a theme park ride, and the seats were worn...some aggressively so. The USB outlet didn't work, which was unfortunate because my daughter's phone needed comfort after what we were experiencing. And then there was the smell--an unforgettable, eye-watering urine aroma that stayed with us for the entire return trip, as if it had purchased its own ticket. WTH??? The bright spots? The bus was on time, we had an amazing time in NYC, and--most importantly--my daughter has zero interest in ever hopping on a bus and running off to New York City alone. Mission accomplished!

The late amtrak trains, crazy airport security and JFK delays, dirty stinky greyhounds with bad drivers, and alas the chinatown bus. The cheapies unite! If you have to take the Chinatown bus, Eastern is one of the best choices. I have taken several others and this company provides at the very least the most consistent service. Eastern picks up downtown and in midtown by Penn station. You usually will just see a long line of people waiting for the bus at a corner. There is no particular order and though they have an online reservation system, the reality is often just first come, first served. Even if you have a reservation get there 15-20 mins early, so that you can get a better position in line. The buses run generally on time. On major holiday weekends, basically the only time I am travelling, its really luck of the draw on this point. They often make a stop in Baltimore on the way to DC, so it may not be express service depending on the time. The buses are generally clean and newer models than some of the other companies. Also if you book at gotobus.com, they have a $5 discount for booking roundtrip so it only costs $35. You can do better, but for this price and in comparison to its competition, Eastern is where it's at!

Another extremely convenient aspect of traveling by bus is often times you can buy the ticket the day you leave and the best part is no TSA grabbing your junk before boarding. I've bought my tickets on gotobus.com which is also extremely convenient and the price you see is the price you pay. It seems gotobus.com is the Expedia or Kayak for buses. I've had a good experience on most buses but my least favorite is Sky Horse. Most of the buses with the e. xception of Sky Horse never entirely fill up because they make very few stops between the two cities making the ride very comfortable. On the contrary Sky Horse is always packed because they make seemingly unlimited stops until the bus is entirely full. Once on they move the people like herds of cattle. Prices vary depending on the season but no price is worth being moved like cattle. Aditionally the bus smelled kind of bad and the drivers talked all night making it hard to sleep which defeats the entire purpose of taking the overnight bus. Gotobus.com is a great site and provides a good service. When deciding which bus to take, take any except Sky Horse.

But here's what you need to know more than anything: This bus is worth it. It's 60 freaking dollars. 60 bucks from the middle of Ohio to NYC. Much cheaper than flying. Yes, you chose the cheap option! It ain't fancy! But it gets you to your destination in one piece. You get what you pay for and then some. Of course you can't really sleep-it's a freaking night bus. Of course people are rude- people are rude everywhere *especially* when it comes to transportation. But for $60 this is a wonderful bus. I am broke (perpetually) and this bus has gotten me home cheaply and quickly for life events I would have had to miss otherwise. Tips: I always carry pepper spray. A blanket is a good idea, PA is cold at night. Hold your bladder until the 5 AM rest stop if you can because ew, bus bathroom. Bring a snack And deal with it. Or be fancy and spend your money on a flight. But I fly a lot too. Planes are about as comfortable as busses these days. At least on the Sky Horse you only paid $60. Godspeed.
