Really enjoyed this place. They give you plenty of food for the price and the shrimp is always fried to perfection in their shrimp po'boy. It's like a little shack in south Tampa so there's a few tables inside the establishment and large picnic tables outside. I want to cut to the facts...this little place is producing HUGE flavorful portions of seafood. We had a number of entrees because everything sounded so good, and it was! I started with conch fritters which were served with a house made sauce that so good and complemented the rich fritters. Next, my wife had their famous grouper sandwich. Now, let me say that I am not a fan or grouper, but after tasting my wife's sandwich, I am a fan of THAT grouper. The sandwich was huge and all of our entrees were served with these delicious Parmesan fries . Now on to me, I had the lobster corndog because who wouldn't want to try a lobster corn dog. The lobster was tender and the breading was not so thick that the lobster got lost. so, because I couldn't make up my mind I got the oyster po boy as well but I never got to it because the portions were big. I did taste a couple of oysters and like everything else, it was so fresh, lightly breaded with just the right amount of crunch so that the star of the show didn't get soggy. I ate the po boy the following day and it was as good as the night before. The service here is amazing as they are attentive to all requests and they are polite and treat you as valued guests. I tried one of his shrimp myself and I must say it was pretty delicious. Seasoned perfectly and pretty big in size it was definitely a satisfying meal. I ordered the yucca and blackened shrimp which came very heavily recommended by my fellow foodie friend. I'm so glad I took her advice because it was some of the best yucca I've ever had! We drove out of our way to have Big Ray's for lunch after hearing that this was the place for grouper and cubanos in Tampa. I have to say, it did not at all disappoint. There is a small indoor seating area where you can order at the counter, but the outdoor area under the tent is probably the better pick. Service was friendly and pretty fast, and portions were generous. My father in law had a grouper sandwich. The fish was tender and more flaky than other grouper we'd tried earlier in the week. My husband's shrimp po boy was generously stuffed with large and tasty shrimp. My cubano was ginormous--half of the sandwich would easily be considered full sized at many another restaurant. I chose the Cole slaw which was cool and refreshing and had a pineapple taste with it. Now, here's why I didn't go for five stars. Ok, there's an A/C in the window, but u don't feel it! Trust me I survived. I would definitely come back in the winter. They have outside shaded seating also with a fan mister. Inside it's about four tables. It was a nice fall Tuesday about 2. We had a blackened grouper sandwich with fries. My hub had blackened grouper Rueben with onion rings. Both sandwiches were amazing. My mom's sandwich, the bun was cold - and my sandwich, the fish felt cold in the middle. We couldn't tell if the food had cooled down or not because they wanted to give us our entire order at once. Loved this place. I was not sure what to expect. I did not read any reviews before we went. My wife has a knack for finding really good food in some off the beaten path locations. This one did not disappoint. I had the Shrimp Po-boy and it was great. Shrimp were fresh and plump. So many on the sandwich, I had to remove about half of them just to close it. My wife had the Grouper Reuben and it was just as good and fresh. Our son who is a french fry fiend, had to eat all the shrimp on his plate first. The woman at the counter was taking orders and running food. Busy lady, but she was always smiling and so very friendly. A good friend of mine and I visited Big Rays as he told me Big Rays has the best Fish Sandwiches he has every had...bet Small location with several covered picnic tables outside and one or 2 tables inside. Our order was taken from the counter outside and our food was brought to us. My friend had the fried grouper sandwich and I went with the blackened grouper sandwich. The fish is as fresh as it gets, topped with homemade tarter sauce, lettuce, tomatoes and onions. The sandwich was outstanding, at $20 plus dollars I had very high expectations. French fries, coleslaw, and onion rings were the choices for sides. We both went with the double fried French fries and they were outstanding. Excellent experience and I will definitely go back. If I have to critique anything, it would be the seating outside is a bit rough as there are many flies milling about for a snack. I also think that a cold side, coleslaw, macaroni salad etc should be included for the price. Service was excellent as was the meal. Soda from the fountain was perfect. Big Ray's Fish Camp is one of my favorite places to get seafood. I went on Sunday and I'm so glad I did being that it was mother's day and most places were gonna be packed. It is located on Interbay in South Tampa not far from Macdill AFB. When you first pull up you'll notice how small the place is but it has plenty of shaded outdoor seating and they have even added a few tables inside. When I first walked in I was greeted by the sweet young lady. I ordered the blackened grouper sandwich and fries and my friend ordered yucca and blackened shrimp. The lady brought it out as soon as it was finished and she was very attentive and kept checking on us while attending to other guest which I appreciated since she was the only one working FOH. And let me just say how hot fresh and delicious both meals were. My sandwich was so full of flavor and the lettuce and onion just made it 10x better, I don't think I put it down once lol. I would have liked my fries to be hotter but i still ate them, they also put garlic and parmesan fries are so yummy. Now onto the shrimp and yucca...the blackened shrimp was mmm mmm mmm good and that yucca was the best yucca i have ever had, very well seasoned and it wasn't slimy like some other one's I have had. There is plenty of outdoor seating, which is enjoyable when the weather is good. Inside of the restaurant needs help as far as cleanliness and decor. Super casual with just a few small tables inside and several picnic tables outside on a large patio. As their primary seating option they really need to give the patio some love. I get the whole "fish camp" vibe, but the tables are a bit too rough (two were unsafe as they were literally falling apart). The area is spacious and quiet but lacks shade. The day we were there (Wednesday, early January, around 3:30) people were wandering around trying to find a place to sit that didn't have a broken table or wasn't in full sun. Repairing the tables and maybe adding a few umbrellas would go a long way to making the patio more usable. But now to the food - so good! They have an interesting menu but we all played it safe that day (why I didn't get the lobster corn dog I'll never know?!). Maybe after seeing the manatees and playing with the rays over at TECO we were just hungry for good ole' fish sandwiches. Anyway, the Camp did not disappoint. Our out of town guests each ordered the grouper sandwich and we both had the grouper Reuben. The fried grouper was on point - huge portions, perfectly battered and fried. The fries were hot crispy and heavily dusted with parm, which was a nice surprise. The fish dip was solid, but not quite as smoky as we tend to like it. The Reubens were good with plenty of fish and I really liked the pineapple slaw instead of kraut. Only regret we had was not opting for fried fish on our Reubens instead of grilled. Even though they offer fried, grilled, or blackened, for some reason we weren't asked and being first-timers we just didn't think of it on our own. We live in Belleair Bluffs so Rays isn't exactly local for us but we will definitely go back and try out some of the more unique items on their menu. read more

I came here for the first time around 3pm on a hot and sunny Florida day (typical 90-100 degree day). There was plenty of parking, no line, and maybe one couple sitting outside. You place your order at the counter and the server will bring your order out where you're sitting. We sat inside since it was so hot but I did notice plenty of covered seating outside. They had a little window unit so it was cool inside. Food was brought out pretty quickly and was so delicious! Portions were generous in fact I took part of the grouper home since it wouldn't fit on my sandwich. The sandwich comes with garlic fries which were good. The fish tasted fresh, however it was still undercooked in the thicker part of the filet.
