It was immediately obvious that the chocolate chip & snickerdoodle cookies were not fresh. They tasted & felt at least 2 days old. Perhaps it was our mistake for not asking when these were baked before choosing them. The iced shortbread & linzer cookies were good. The raspberry jam between the linzer's shortbread cookies was generous, making it messy to eat - but yummy. The puffy iced lemon cookie itself had a nice soft texture, but the icing on it was aggressively Sprite tasting, & overpowered the cookie. Still we enjoyed the soft cookie part naked. I love a jammy thumbprint cookie, because the cookie is soft & the jam is baked into the center to reduce it to slightly chewy. The 2 we picked here had blobs of jam placed in the center after baking, & the cookie part was almost crunchy, so every bite left crumb & jam blobs dripping on your hands. We got none of the chewy jammy centers or soft cookie parts that make thumbprints so good. I'm giving 3 stars overall because service was very warm & friendly, and the shop is very inviting. Perhaps the best cookies to get here are the shortbreads as they are very cute & seem to hold up well. Or any of the cookies we tried, that appeal to you in the ways they did not appeal to us.

It's truly a pleasant little store. The lady seemed a little weirded out when my brother and I first walked in. We were in Manchester for the night, on our way back to NY from a week in Maine. She looked at us like....hmm I dunno, don't wanna say anything mean bc she wasn't mean lol, she just looked at us ... weirdly lol. Not sure how else to put it. She then went on to tell us about the store and how all the candy is made there (pretty sure that's what she said). Couple things to consider as to why tho... 1) it's Manchester VT. It's a very bougie little town. While I didn't get to see the sugaring process itself, Hidden Springs Maple serves as the retail home for the family operation. Inside, the rustic barn-style shop is wonderfully nostalgic, with weathered wood, shelves lined with glass bottles and jars, and the unmistakable feeling of an old-fashioned country store. It feels less like a gift shop and more like a place where New England traditions have been carefully preserved. The young man behind the counter patiently entertained every one of my tourist-style questions, answering each with genuine enthusiasm and an obvious pride in the craft. Before making a purchase, I was invited to sample three grades of syrup--Amber Rich, Dark, and Very Dark (Robust)--a thoughtful touch that lets visitors appreciate how the flavors deepen from one variety to the next. Amber Rich was my favorite, and I happily left with a jug, along with maple cream, locally produced honey, smoked maple syrup, and a gift box of regional jams. Now comes the only real challenge: figuring out how to pack the maple jug and those glass jars for the trip home without breaking a single one. The kids love the smoked cheese as well. Excellent quality food overall, worth every penny. They also do mail order, but shipping costs are pricey because of the insulation required. So we pretty much limit our purchases to when we're in the area. But this is a mandatory stop!

We stopped in this last weekend for a birthday pie and he accidentally bought the cranberry orange oatmeal raisin and that's not something he'd ever try normally. But he loves those too. I haven't tried my peach crumble pie yet but I'm sure it's fabulous.
