We had been fishing all morning and were heading back but wanted some lunch. This place was open and we stopped in. There were only 3 of us and they did have signs on the door stating they were short-staffed and to be patient. We sat immediately and were greeted by the owner. We ordered the burgers and they were delicious. Thick and juicy, great flavor and the fries were good too. I will go back to this place and try other menu items. The chicken fried steak looked really good and I might have to go for that next time. Very friendly people, good conversations with them, pretty good prices and again, the food was great. If you are in the area, even 50 miles away, this is a place to come and eat. Not only to help out a small business, but you will not be disappointed. read more

Sadly, after 31 years serving the best BBQ in Valeria, Big O has decided to retire. No one cooked ribs like his, so there's no alternative anywhere. None. This place has been on my bucket list for years, and wish I hadn't waited so damn long. Brisket was tender and just lean enough; sauce (choice of mild or spicy) was good. Potato salad and cole slaw were both excellent and fresh. Tasted friend's hand-breaded steak fingers and gravy--wow. Finished off by sharing a thick piece of very chocolate pie with serious meringue. Very good BBQ, and great folks serving it! Had the brisket, brown beans (like grandma used to make), and potato salad. Brisket was very good. Nice bark, little tough but still tasty. And the beans and potato salad were spot on. Visited with the owner for a minute, nice guy, and a clientele representative of West Texas!!! I have eaten here for years when travelling between Brownwood & San Angelo. Forget Underwood so-called barbecue and keep driving. This is real Texas Barbecue smoked, sliced and served by Big O himself. They also have other things like burgers and Texas Chicken - fried steak but I can't pass on the fabulous brisket. Definitely great for dine-in or take-out. This is one of those legendary joints with a less-than-ideal location but worth discovering. read more

I was on a road trip and saw that this place would be on my way around lunch time, so I decided to give it a go. There were several cars in the parking lot, which I took as a good sign. Several local families were inside having lunch. I decided on the sliced brisket plate with beans and potato salad as my sides. The waitress brought my plate out, with the beans, potato salad and bbq sauces being self serve. Brisket: Flavor - 2 / 5. There was very little smoke flavor and almost no seasoning discernible. Given the color and flavor, I am guessing that it had been cooked prior to the day of my visit. Tenderness - 3 / 5. I had to use a knife to cut it, but it is about average compared to other bbq joints Sauces: Two sauces were offered, a regular and spicy. The spicy was my pick between the two, hands down. It had good flavor and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I would not classify it as spicy myself, however Regular sauce: 2 / 5 Spicy sauce: 4 / 5 Potato salad: The potato salad was average bbq joint fare, not bad, but nothing to write home about. 3 / 5 Beans: The pinto beans were a little disappointing. It seemed as if they had been in the pot for a while and were lacking in flavor. 2 / 5 Value: The price for my plate was $10, which, given the quantity and quality, I would consider about $2 too much. 2 / 5 Overall score: My score averages out to 2.3, but as Yelp doesn't do partial scores for reviews, I will round down to 2 / 5. I often visit here when Im in the Voss Valera area for deer hunting season. The brisket and sausage are great. I recommend getting a 2 meat plate with both of them some beans and potatoes salad. Big o and a few longtime employees are always kind and making jokes. I look forward to my next vist to big o's and would recommend it to anyone passing by. read more

Big O's is a wonderful little place with the best pork ribs I've ever tasted - juicy and fall-off-the-bone tender. In addition to the rib plate in the photo, we had an order of their butter fries and a piece of coconut cream pie with honest to goodness meringue on top. It was all delish and the butter fries were melt-in-your good. The owner, Big O is a plain-spoken man who is definitely one of the reasons it's such a popular spot. To have return business you must be honest in your dealings. I stopped in to grab some take out for supper when I got home from my trip to Brownwood. Underwoods was closed on Wednesday, that was to be my stop. A fellow suggested Big O's at Valera since I was going through there. I got a pound of sliced brisket and a half pound of sausage. I was asked if I wanted spicy or mild sauce. I said that I would like to try both. At checkout I noticed two medium sized drinking cups in a sack with lids. I thought that maybe they ran out of small containers for the sauce. I was charged two dollars each for the sauce extra on top of the $10.50 per pound. I didn't ask any questions figured I just had got a whole lot of BBQ sauce for later. On arriving home I opened up the sack and opened up one of the cups. It had about 2/3 of a cup of sauce in it. Same for the other. At supper I made a plate for the wife and I which was about a quarter pound each of the sliced brisket. After removing that 1/2 pound I looked at the rest of the pound on the bottom. One half of it was sliced brisket fat. So 1/4 of the pound of brisket was unedible, except for a dog. Deceptive practice like that will never merit a return visit from me. The BBQ rates a 7 on a ten scale, business wise a zero. read more
