Muddy's Pit BBQ is a seasonal roadside barbeque restaurant located in Keene, Ontario which is…read moresituated right outside Peterborough, Ontario. It's approximately a 1 hr 30 mins to 1 hr 45 mins drive from Toronto depending on traffic. Got there just before dinnertime on a Saturday and decided to go with the carnivore sampler ($14.75/pound). I got a 1.5 pounds of the carnivore sampler which is enough food for the average guy along with a side of barbeque beans ($7.00/pound) which weighed around .33 pounds. The carnivore sampler consisted of pulled pork, beef brisket, hot link sausages and pork back ribs. It's a good choice if you are looking to try out all the meats. Everything on the menu is done by the pound but keep in mind you have the option of ordering in between (i.e 1.33 or 1.75 pounds). The hot link sausage was outstanding, nicely seasoned with a great kick and smokey flavour. The beef brisket was pretty good, tender fall apart meat. Pulled pork was pretty good, fall apart meat and not dry. The pork back ribs were also pretty good, fall off the bone meat. Could have used a little bit more of a smokey flavour but overall pretty good. Really enjoyed the beans, which were creamy, tender and had a rich barbeque flavour. Really good accompanying side. If you are ever in the Peterborough area, I definitely recommend Muddy's Pit BBQ for good barbeque. It's not amazing barbeque but pretty good barbeque overall. The prices are reasonable for barbeque, keep in mind meat isn't cheap these days. They also have ample seating inside the restaurant. Fyi: Muddy's Pit BBQ is only open seasonally from April to the end of December.

Alongside the meats, we wanted to try their sides as well which consisted of mac and cheese, baked beans, corn bread, cole slaw and salt potatoes. For the brisket which we looked forward to the most, we found these to be drier than we would have liked. Paired with sauce, they were just okay. For the pulled pork, we found this to be phenomenal. Smoky and delicious all on its own. Definitely a highlight for us. For the bacon, we ordered 3 different kinds, and we found the flavors didn't really shine through. Although generously thick cut and cooked perfectly. The kielbasa was a bit of a letdown. We found these to be on the dry side, but the flavors were okay. For the sides, the mac and cheese we found the pasta to be a bit overcooked and overall, on the bland side. The baked beans tasted great, no complaints there. The corn bread wasn't anything special and neither were the salt potatoes. Although we did enjoy the salt potatoes and found they were exactly how they ought to be. The cole slaw was also on the bland side and tasted more of the fridge than any flavor. We've heard good things about their smoked wings which we had to try before leaving. We ordered a 5-piece with their spicy Asian sauce. The wings were delicious, the smokiness flavor penetrated throughout the entire wing, but the sauce was very salty which took away from the natural delicious taste of the smoked wings. Overall, a good experience which some seasoning issues but would revisit if we were back in the area.

The place was neat and clean and our server Michelle was very nice, helpful and personable. Being new customers we were surprised that we were offered a sampler of eight of the sides as well as cornbread with a surprising cinnamon butter to spread on it. All were delicious and made our choice of two difficult. My wife chose a side salad and the Cajun corn. I got the mashed potatoes with gravy and the smoked baked beans. We waited maybe 20 minutes after the sampler and my wife's salad for our dinner, which seemed long but not terrible. The owner Bob had been coming around checking on tables. When our food came out, he also checked on us and apologized for the length of wait. He offered free desert, which we didn't think necessary but very much appreciated. We each got a 1/3 slab of ribs which were tender and delicious without saucing them. There were 3 sauce options at the table. Gold, original and sweet. All good but original was my favorite. I got the pulled pork and my wife the pulled chicken. We took our complimentary desserts to go as we had no room left. We choose the baklava cheesecake and peanut butter pie. Also both delicious. We highly recommend you give this place a try. It's easy to get to and should have been booked solid based on the atmosphere, service and food!
