BUT it was the opposite of our expectations. It was 500 metres from our rental cottage and we were starving so thought we'd walk there and give it a try. I ordered a burger with the works - best decision I've ever made. Probably one of the juiciest burgers I've tasted. The patty was thick but not too thick and the first bite was just as delicious as the next ones. The onions were also yummy, can't go wrong with those. One thing to note - portions are very generous! We ordered fries separately and realized we could have ordered 1 to share. We got sick of the fries because there were to many! Haha. If you are looking for some quality fast food this place is it. My friends got milkshakes and a root beer float - all highly reviewed!

Went in on a Saturday night and it was quite busy so take that with a grain of salt. The food was…read moreokay, we had wings and a chicken wrap. However it took over half an hour to get our food, at one point having to ask for an ETA which apparently annoyed the bartender/server because the service after that was horrendous. No wet naps or extra napkins with the wings, didn't ask once if we wanted a refill on our drinks. Also had the unfortunate view looking directly into the kitchen expediting station and were less than impressed with the hygiene we observed. Lastly after having to flag down for our bill because the server didn't come by once to clean up plates, he just handed us a machine although we were intending to pay by cash, still gave a generous tip but weren't even asked if we wanted change, nor did we get any sort of goodbye. Will not be recommending or returning.

I stopped at The Back Kitchen for lunch after bicycling Amherst Island. It is the only restaurant…read moreon the island. While the menu is fairly simple, it is a charming establishment. It is owned by the community of islanders themselves and operates as a nonprofit restaurant. The employees are volunteers. I had a burger which was well made and was generous in portion. Coleslaw can vary quite a bit, but I really enjoyed theirs. Their prices are quite reasonable. They apparently have dinner specials each night and also serve as an ice cream stand. If I ever find myself on Amherst Island again I'll definitely be back.

(And I am sorely sorry to those who had different experiences!) I came to learn recently that Birdy's has come under new ownership within the last year or so. As such, the menu has changed and the quality of the food has more certainly dropped. We used to go there pretty often for special occasions. Birthdays, meetings, etc. Before, the menu boasted variety and class in Belleville that could not top other restaurants. Yet in dining here again in June, 2024, I am sad to say that they have eradicated a good majority of their menu for "basic" and mundane pallets. My spouse and I used to go for their vegan options which surpassed most other places we've tried, yet were surprised to find that the stroganoff we often eat was no longer there. Half the vegan menu was erased. Instead replaced by the simplest and cheapest of curries and another dish. Two options. Two, compared to the four-five that were given before. Also very curious to claim it as a vegan dish when the kitchen nor the new owners have read the packaging on the pita bread that accompanied it. (It was not Vegan so if vegans are eating here, please beware!!) The portions were also a bit small for the extravagant prices. It was one of our favourites and I hope to see return to what it was prior to the ownership change, but it is clear that the new owners are less inclined to think about quality and more inclined to think about the profit it generates. Unfortunately, we will not be returning.

We were en route to Montreal when we decided to take a little detour and stop by Farmer's Daughter…read moreSub Shoppe, as we'd heard that their sandwiches were worth a little extra driving. Are they ever! We arrived around lunchtime and were served almost immediately. We decided to share a couple of subs, The Sunny-Lea ("turkey, stuffing, cranberries, cheese") and The 1830 ("AAA wood-fired beef, caramelized onions, and caremelized onion cheese"). They were ready a few minutes later, so we took our food out to an available bench and began eating. These are some seriously terrific subs. I started with the 1830 and it pretty much blew me away right from the first bite. The super tender (and plentiful) meat is enhanced by the other components, and honestly I'd be happy eating that sandwich every day for the rest of my life. The Sunny-Lea fares just as well and really does taste like Thanksgiving in sandwich form. Really, really phenomenal. I wish that Farmer's Daughter Sub Shoppe weren't so far away, but at least now I have a reliable stop to make any time I head out in that direction.
