I can't thank everyone enough for the amazing service, delicous and healthy food, and perfect location! My favorite is their homemade baked goods and their Combo plate 2 Guava Chicken Katsu and Ginger Tare Beef It's a gem!

StraWberry guava cream soda
Brenda L.

The good: I had the 3 protein combo with macaroni salad and rice (comes with 2 sauces/seasonings) and the spicy slider with chicken katsu meat. The protein combo had a LOT of meat. My husband and I couldn't finish it. I got a strawberry cream soda and thought it was delicious. I liked the spicy slider sauce and slaw. I also tried the pineapple, passionfruit and smoked cherry shave ice with condensed milk. The interior is small but there are about 4 tables inside and some outdoor seating as well. Inside, they have Post-it notes and pens where you can draw some art and post it on their wall. The bad: The smoky cherry flavor tasted like artificial cherry medicine flavor. My husband liked it more than I did. I thought the shaved ice was a little bit too doused with syrup. Our cream soda drink was mostly ice. The katsu batter wasn't evenly golden. It was a bit chunky and thick. The Portuguese sausage was salty. I would've liked if the slaw and spicy sauce were separate in the sandwich rather than the slaw be tossed in the sauce (so that the slaw could stay crunchier). The shave ice was smaller than I expected and didn't taste as great as other shave ice places I've had. The interesting: They're very generous with napkins. The interior is a bit dim.

Stopped by after visiting Palos Verdes today. Small restaurant located in a shopping mall, but big flavor! We're not from the area so of course we wanted to try everything while we were there. Ordered the musubis (comes with 2, & they're huge) you get to choose your own protein the hubby selected Portuguese sausage and Kalua pork. He couldn't get over how flavorful the pork was. I had the combo plate with the guava chicken katsu. The portion of chicken was huge, it was dark meat and perfectly fried outside and juicy inside. Came on a bed of rice and fried noodles with a side of Mac salad and coleslaw. I opted for the apricot chili and the ginger taru sauce. Amazing flavor. I will say the sides were just ok. The Mac salad was bland and the sauce on the coleslaw was overpowering. Other than that little blunder everything else was perfection. We ordered the Nikki sunrise shave ice shake (#2 popular) Tasted like a tropical paradise. The shave ice was topped with a generous helping of vanilla ice cream which mixed well with the ice and juices. Had to also try the butter mochi as per others' recommendation. The cashier even asked our preference on the mochi (middle piece, side piece, or corner piece). We chose a side piece which was a perfect balance of chewy and delicious. For under 40 bucks we got an amazing meal & dessert which tasted better than any restaurant we could have visited for over double the price. Worth a stop if you're in the area!!

Love this place!! Best hawaiian place in the area. Highly recommend the brûlée butter mochi and the shaved ice is amazing! Workers are kind. Only con is there are no public restrooms!

Guava chicken combo

I'd heard of a Hawaiian restaurant that opened up in Palos Verdes, and I'd heard good things about it, so I decided to grab lunch after hiking. I opted for the combo with guava chicken, rice, salad, and garlic noodles. Service was friendly and quick, and I got to enjoy it outside on the Promenade. The good: the guava chicken. Charbroiled, yet tender and not dry at all. There was a subtle sweetness to it, and given I love guava, it paired very well with the savory chicken. The bad: the rice and noodles. I opted for noodles as one of the side dishes, and unfortunately, they were not good. They were rubbery, soggy and utterly tasteless; as much as I love noodles, I could not finish those noodles given how bad they tasted. The rice was also a miss: so mushy that there was absolutely no texture to it. I ended up eating the guava chicken by itself before tossing the rest. Overall, I felt my meal at Big Island Eats was a miss, but maybe it was the combo I got. I figure I must've gone on an off day, so I'd be keen on returning to trying other dishes out!

They knocked it out of the park AGAIN! I ordered just a side of chicken, and it's amazing. I love this place.

This place is so good! We just got back from Hawaii and I highly recommend everything here. The shaved ice tasted so good and fresh as well as the syrups. Also the savory katsu is also amazing. Highly recommend if you're missing authentic Hawaiian food.

I love this place, I've been here twice. It really is a mom and pop shop kind of tucked away but the food won't disappoint. The only thing I would stay away from is the spam Katsu, which is basically just fried spam. It wasn't that good. The top 3 proteins I recommend are: beef, Kalua pork and guava chicken (in that order). The beef is super tender and flavorful. Once combo order is enough to feed 2 people. We also got their shaved ice which is really good. When you order make sure you pick the syrups that are homemade because it's super unique. They have outdoor seating which is dog friendly. Lots of parking in the mall structure. Highly recommend!

Shave ice milkshake
Lanea Hiromi S.

First off - Their shave ice is extremely good. The ice is perfectly soft textured and if you get it as a milkshake, the cream and shave ice flavors are perfect! That being said, the food my boyfriend and I tried today was not good at all. Tofu musubi had no flavor and the big island crunch is just furikake. The rice I believe wasn't cooled long enough after cooking or was overdone because it was mushy. The mac salad has no carrots or other veggies and tastes like nothing. No vinegar or taste of the mayo. It just tastes like wet noodles unfortunately. My boyfriend was happy with the crunch of the chicken sandwich (lipslidah) but he couldn't finish it because the oil I believe may have been old (smelled like crayons). All in all, maybe willing to try their other food items, but the shave ice might be the only thing we get from here for a bit.

Nichole F.

I would rate the spam misubi a 4/10. For almost 8 dollars the spam wasn't thick enough. I took a bite immediately after getting it and the nori was soggy. The way they fold it is just not fun to eat. You have to take two bites just to get to the spam. And the rice is not even. It's not that hard to use a mold.

My sister seen it was mentioned on ABCLA local news so my brother drove my sister and I to this Hawaiian eatery on a Sunday afternoon in late May. It is located in a hilly shopping center across from target shooing center. After parking, we found the hidden gem next to another restaurant. Inside is very small with 2 tables and outdoor seating. The owner seems nice and friendly. The menu was posted on the door and at the counter. I ordered guava chicken thighs with rice and macaroni salad. We didn't wait too long. The guava chicken had good aroma and moist drenched in guava sauce. The macaroni salad taste good with cabbage salad. My sister ordered garlic fried rice on the side and that was tasty with pieces of Portuguese sausage, eggs, green onions, and garlic. I think it needs more garlic. Everything taste very good.

Big Island Choco Cookie

This place is full on legit! I was pleasantly surprised to find a local Hawaiian eatery at the Promenade on the Peninsula shopping center in Rolling Hills Estates. They're located on the ground level with plenty of parking. Whenever I try a new Hawaiian eatery, I always order their loco moco. That dish alone will tell me how legit the restaurant is. The loco moco patty, made of 100% angus beef, was thick and flavorful, sitting on a bed of hot rice with dark gravy all over! We all know it's about the gravy, and theirs is very flavorful! The two fried eggs on top were covered with Big Island Crunch (furikake) which made it extra flavorful. For $12, it was a very reasonably priced dish. For dessert, I got the baked butter mochi (creme Brulee style), Big Island Choco Cookie and the signature Choco Banana Bread. All three items were outstanding and definitely satisfied my sweet tooth! Seating was not available inside, but there's plenty of tables outside in the open shopping plaza. Service was friendly and full of aloha! If you love Hawaiian food and happen to be in the area, definitely check them out!

Jessica Y.

The store is located at the promenade. There is a parking structure with plenty of parking. I tried the spam masubi (each order comes with 2), the lava lava and shaved ice (pineapple coconut ice cream on bottom and coconut syrup and smoke cherry syrup). The lava lava had a bit too much going on for me but loved the shaved ice. Only thing is I would change the smoke cherry to something else next time. It was a bit too smoky flavored to me but the staff did warn me. The masubi was also tasty. Friendly staff. Speedy service. Good food.

$5 cup of ice.

Earlier this week, I ordered two of my personal favorite items. - Combo Plate w/Double Salmon Spicy Mayo - Beef Rib Plate w/1 scoop of rice and mac salad I highly recommend asking for a couple of samples of poké flavors you're curious about before ordering. I got to try CA Hawaiian and Spicy Garlic Salmon which were also fantastic. And you simply can't go wrong with their Shoyu. I'll have to try getting different flavors in my combo plate vs. doubling up next time. Salmon Spicy Mayo is creamy, with a perfect kick to it that makes this specific poké flavor ADDICTING. Truthfully, it's only spicy if you eat too fast. Beef rib plate was fantastic. The item pictured was only my 2nd time ordering this. Moving forward, it's hard not to order considering a) this has a nice smoky flavor b) the meat is so tender & succulent it falls off the bone with a little shake (portion matches the price point, which I deeply appreciate since other places will skimp out on beef). I think the only things I was bummed about was my scoop of mac salad was tiny and there wasn't much furikake on my rice. Not by any means, a major deal since I ultimately got money's worth in juicy beef ribs. Service was stellar. A polite young woman had 2 other customers in front of me with hefty orders, but I was still taken care of promptly. I kinda like poke and more better but this place is still good. I feel like they give you more poke and is about the same price or a little cheaper. The customer service was also friendly. The inside was clean. No complaints. I haven't tried the hot food here but I'll definitely come back to try it.

In carnivals or county fairs, there is a revolving shooting gallery game where 2-dimensional ducks continuously rotate on a conveyer belt. Shooting one down means little because it will eventually re-surface, and there are so many plastics ducks that denting one does nothing against the flock. I mean, in order to really make a statement against the flock one would have to use a bazooka or missile launcher to bring a specific duck down. And even though I have had bad experiences with this Ono's link that have resulted in some tummy grumbles, I can forgive because I understand that sometimes I am an unlucky duck that receives the worst of a business day. But this review is not meant to shoot down this place, quite the contrary it is meant to celebrate this place all the ducking way! The fare is Hawaiian inspired, and typically solid. And it can be healthy (grilled chicken) or indulgent (katsu- Asian fried chicken) and even unnecessary in an extra side kind of way (musubi or cream cheese wontons/ragoons). My recommendation is to stick to a combo---- protein, steam greens, side of rice and macaroni salad. I forego the macaroni salad and add a side salad or extra rice, depending on the time of day. All of this to say that this place is a strong conceptual choice for fast food that feels clean and island-like. And now, to the specific reason as to why I Yelp for this place an employee of the joint who goes by the name of Alicia. This place is the move, often a time for me. And I have been to this place so much that Alicia knows my voice and knows my order. It is kind of great to drive, and have someone know your name. Now the Cheers theme song impacts me in a different way. Alicia is friendly, never in a rush, makes me feel like I am the only customer in the world (shout out to Riri) and is attentive to a fault. I think, due to our brief banter the line grew a little bit longer than it should have. But again, Alicia did not make me feel like it was a problem. She made me feel like we were on Island time. She is also a salt to the earth type of person, a down-to- roll, kind of girl because she posed for her moment in the light. Workers like here elevate a fast food choice to a welcomed visit.

Sometimes I find myself waiting 5 minutes or more to get my order taken. It would also help to maybe move the menu stands closer to the entrance so they could take more orders before cars get to the window or have someone go out there to take orders when there's a line of cars. Often times they waste time when cars are just sitting there waiting to get their orders taken only to wait again for their food to be prepared. It doesn't make sense. I would come here again but only when I have time to wait or if I see that there is no line of cars waiting.

The store tried to claim it was because I didn't order extra avocado. The first time I did not get extra avo and a respectable albeit modest slice was definitely there. This time I dug underneath the lettuce and still mostly salad. Store offered, "extra avocado next time." Also there was not much noticeable difference between a medium and large bowl (or at least what I thought I got was large?). I got tendon cuts of fish and maybe 5 garlic chips (you can buy a whole bag of the kind they use for like $3 at Trader Joe's BTW!). PS The girl working the cash register does not greet/acknowledge customers and is needlessly surly every time.
