I had to think long and hard about writing this review because I grew up with the philosophy "if you don't have anything nice to say - then don't say anything at all". That being said - I don't want others to fall into the trap I did. My experience was similar to the many other voices here on yelp. I was provided with an "estimated hours time" to complete my move . . . everything in the house was packed and ready to load. Three men showed up late. One young guy was on his phone every time I walked outside to check progress on loading. A completely rude man kept asking to use my bathroom and then informed me I was out of toilet paper and did I have more. Needless to say I had a clogged toilet. They took more than twice the anticipated time to load the truck and behaved outrageously when I said I didn't have enough cash to pay them (since I planned for half the time). The man wanted to stay (alone) in my empty house while I went to the bank to get money. What kind of legitimate business demands payment in cash?! But the real reason I am writing this review is because most of what I loaded into the truck went into storage for a year. I just moved again and was able to unpack my things......crushed storage boxes, soo many broken items I can't even count, damaged furniture AND my very expensive commercial sized treadmill is broken. The day of the move I watched the bathroom idiot try to pick up the console by himself and as I was beginning to say, "don't....." - he dropped it upside down on my concrete drive. I was hopeful that since it was wrapped in foam and moving blankets it would be safe - but I should have known better. When I called the owner he started swearing at me and insisting everything was my fault and his men told him I was "difficult". Don't trust this man/company with your possessions! The clowns he hires to do the moving are unprofessional, rude, lazy and don't give a poo about how they treat your items. read more

Had a very smooth and professional communication with the owner, John. And got quoted for a more than reasonable price for my move. The move itself went way smoother than I anticipated. My crew, Derek and Justin were extremely efficient and communicative. They always asked me where and how I would like to have the things unloaded and placed, and were very respectful of my apartment. Ended up finishing everything and more than what I have asked for to unload in less than the quoted 2 hours! Would definitely consider using them again if needed to move. The owner, John Andrew, is an unhinged lunatic who: 1) Yanked his crew from my home after they had already started working; 2) cursed me out and hung up on me; 3) threatened to come to my home to make sure his movers weren't there (the moving crew was very friendly and professional and both they and I wanted to get this job done today); 4) refuses to return my $75 deposit. That's the short story. The longer story is: I had to reschedule 3 times before the moving date due to a building inspection date change, then a problem with HVAC that required drilling and work performed on the new home before I could move in, then I got EXTREMELY ILL with potential COVID symptoms. So, I get it - 3 reschedules on my part but for completely unpredicted and unavoidable reasons. I had informed John in our first phone convo that there would potentially be reschedules due to the building inspection timeline. It was well within his right to deny my rescheduling and just cancel the move! However, he agreed to today's move and time. His movers showed up a few hours early. There were some communication issues between his crew and him. I texted saying I was not prepared for them to be here that early, I was on a budget and needed to conserve the time they would be there. I said his miscommunication was unprofessional (there were also prior issues when I texted that I might have COVID 4 hours before the crew arrival time. He did not notify his crew until after they arrived). The movers were polite and courteous and did a professional job wrapping my items and moving them to the next door unit. That is, until John Andrew flew into a psychopathic range, cursed me out, and demanded that his movers leave my home. For absolutely no reason except that this manchild could not handle being called unprofessional for his lack of communication with his crew. I called him to reason with him - the movers were already in my home, doing the work, it was fine that they were early, and let's just get this done. I didn't get to say a single word before he started screaming and hung up on me. His movers called to reason with him and he threatened to would show up at my house to make sure they were not there. So now I am left high and dry on moving day, rattled by a stark raving lunatic who knows my home address, and he won't return my deposit. Again, it is unfortunate that the owner's actions jeopardized his crew from making a living. I was prepared to give them a 30% tip and I even told John "you can keep the $75 deposit on completion of the job." Well, he did not let his crew complete the job. And he still feels entitled to my money. So - buyer beware. edit: the owner's response below perfectly exemplifies his derogatory attitude toward clients. trying to undermine me by citing his belief about why i moved (not that it is ANY of his business to ask - I found it very awkward that he asked during our very first phone convo and I gave a vague reason), is yet another demonstration that this man is unstable. read more

I sat and debating whether to provide a review for this company. Moving is a headache in general and it's really hard to find good help. I would have given them 2 stars but the day before my move- uhaul's 3rd party moving help canceled on me and I was striking out finding help there- so I called Big Guy For Hire and they were able to move me the very next day. I appreciate how accommodating they were with scheduling last minute, so that is why I'm giving them 3 starts. On Thursday, I had booked 2 men to help move my ~ 1000 sq ft house which was quoted for about 2 hours starting at 10 am Friday. Cons: On Friday, one of the movers did not show up. The 1 mover showed up at 10:05 and waited 15 minutes- first thing loaded on the truck was 10:21. This 1 man moved most everything by himself, which is a LOT of work. They are cash only which is challenging when you're paying by the hour without knowing the final price. The rate for 1 mover is $55/ hr versus 2 movers $100/ hr. It took nearly 3.5-4 hours for the 1 guy to move everything by himself, twice the time anticipated since he was by himself. During this time, there were several phone calls about the other guy not showing up and such that seemed to rack up time on the clock. Additionally, I also had to help him get the mattress up the stairs at our new house (since this could not be done alone) and moved other light things because this was starting to take so long. He was not able to get the couch down in the basement by himself and I couldn't help with that- I am 4 months pregnant and need to be careful what I can carry. Overall, not as expected with 1 guy vs 2. The finish time was approximately 1:42. In the end, I was charged the 1 man rate for 4 hours which ended up costing $20 more (compared to 2 men for 2 hours) because one of their men did not show up (let alone it should have been closer to 3.5 hours of charge from when he got started and taking out time for phone calls and such). When I went to pay, the mover did not have change and I was not going to pay an extra $10 on top of this. I asked him to take it up with John. If a company is cash only, please have your men carry change! The mover was very angry and got feisty with me, that I was shorting him- even though I was still paying more than if both men showed up!! When I discussed this with John afterwards- he told me he cant help if his employees show up. This is a horrible business model. If someone is looking to move and needs to be out by a certain date per legal moving contract and hires a company to help move- I would expect the business to take fault for their employees not showing up. Also, now a few days later, as we are putting our house back together- we are finding some damage to some of our property that occurred during the move- such as our ping pong table top being all scratch up. Again, I don't think this would have happened with two movers. I want others to know that they cant be guaranteed two people if booking with this company. read more

These guys are top notch, i've had poor experience with moving companies in the past and these guys are what other companies should aspire to be. showed up early to the job and i anticipated it would only take 5 hours to pack our truck to move across the country, it took them close to 10 hours and they never complained, even on a Saturday. we had A LOT of stuff to fit into a 28ft freight trailer, and they worked their magic to fit every last thing. they were extremely polite and courteous. very respectful of our belongings and John the owner was very helpful in informing me about all the supplies i would need to the move. We worked with Trey and Derek this month to move into our new home, and it was super positive experience. I sent out quotes to four movers, and Big Guy for Hire had the best price. For me it was important that I could pick-and-choose what kind of services I needed. They will drive the moving truck for you, but we had family members helping. We ended up going with hiring 2 guys for a 3 bedroom to 3 bedroom move, and it took about 5 hours. Both Trey and Derek were friendly, respectful and communicative with me. They were very careful with our furniture, and made sure to point things out so I would know "hey, before we move this, just want to make sure you know what the back of this looks like so you're not worried that it was scratched in the move." Especially important as I had them dissembling furniture :) This definitely felt like having friendly neighbors help you move, and I would hire them again. Well-worth the cost, especially if you have tight 90-degree angled stairways and older parents. As with any experience with moving, here's what's helpful to communicate to the company ahead of time: (1) what kind of furniture you have and what tools are required to dissemble it/keep your tools on hand (2) confirm the number of workers in the reservation the day before, as they will give you options between 2 and 3. *DO* get moving blankets when you do this, they will use them judiciously! read more

We ordered a treadmill through NordicTrack and due to COVID the company is no longer offering in home delivery / assembly. There was no way my husband and I would have been able to lift the treadmill to get it where we needed in our home. The guys at Big Guy For Hire made a stressful move easier. As soon as I requested a quote via Yelp, I got an email within half an hour. During our call, he got details of what we needed and gave advice on what types of supplies I should get to make things run smoothly (including information on where I could find those things the cheapest). When I needed to change my reservation after I booked their services, they were flexible, even though they had a big job booked the same day. We were met by Jack and Chris on the day of the move. They were friendly, fun to work with, and efficient. Best of all, they saved us a lot of money. We used UPack Relocubes, where they deliver two storage units but you only pay for what you use. Jack and Chris put their furniture Tetris skills to the test and were able to securely put all our things into just one cube. The movers in our new town will have a lot to live up to. Chris and Trey were friendly and courteous gentlemen, they were a little bit late coming from a previous job but that was not a problem for us since they were in contact and anyway who can predict the exact timing of a job like moving? They communicated well with each other and unpacked a very full 8'X8' Pod in just over 2 hours including a bedroom set and other furniture. For the most part everything was treated gently and moved efficiently, they navigated the narrow stairway up to the apartment very well. There must have been some internal miscommunication in that the order specified large items including a queen size bed, mattress, and box spring, as well as a large dresser. Unfortunately they weren't aware of those large items ahead of time and could have prepared better with additional equipment. Regardless they were able to get the items upstairs (hopefully not at too much soreness for them) with some minor damage, but due to the damage did not charge the heavy item fee, which seemed fair to us. Trey even offered to fix the legs that came off (after 9pm!) but we have a woodworker friend in the area and didn't want to keep these kind men out any later than necessary. 5/5 stars for Trey and Chris themselves, they did great work. However, deducting one star overall for that miscommunication, we can't blame them for not being aware of the large items, but it did result in damage which could have been avoided. read more

I arranged for them to be at the pick up location at 2pm it is 6:30pm and they still have not shown up. They have not tried to contact me all day. I've been the one calling them. I've been calling for an update every hour to check on an ETA and the mover that picked up the phone was extremely rude and disrespectful. I've moved LOTS. I've moved around the country, and also had movers to move things from one floor to another just to have hardwoods refinished. For the most part, I've been pretty happy with all the movers that I have had, and that includes Big Guy (John et al). This time, I moved my stuff from Austin to my dad's in Michigan because I am moving overseas for 2 years. When I called, I let John know that I was kinda out in the boonies (Clinton, MI). He had no problem making the hike, and was more than friendly about it. Because he was so nice, I just find it hard to believe any of the other remarks about him being condescending. I didn't even get a HINT of that. I'll make no off-the-wall comments about that... I know, that's not like me, but I don't want to get too crazy. :) They showed up a little late... but I wasn't in a hurry, so it worked out fine. I showed them the truck, let them know where to put the stuff, and then just let them do their thing while I sat around on my butt (that's the best way to move). They finished in a reasonable manor: not too slow, not too fast. I don't know about you, but I don't need those guys going TOO fast, that can lead to breaking or damaging things. So doing it in a methodical and calculated manor seems the better route (which is exactly what they did). The last two moves I did in Austin seemed to have guys that wanted to run like crazy, and that led to a couple broken/scratched items. So I felt really happy with the level of speed, professionalism, and accommodation that I experienced w/ Big Guy. For sure when I need to move again in 2 years, I'll be making the call. Hopefully he'll still be nice enough to come out so far away! I'm still impressed that he was nice enough to make the trek - it's hard to get my friends to do that sometimes, so getting someone that doesn't even know me yet to come out here was awesome. I'd hire them again in a hearbeat. First, I was flying on faith in my fellow Yelpers when I had to put down a $75 deposit for scheduling a moving appointment. I was kind of thinking, shouldn't *I* be collecting a deposit to make sure the movers show up when they say they will? Alas, no worries, Big Guy for Hire was on-time and ready to work. You could tell they were always thinking a step or three ahead when it came to what order to put the pieces in the truck. It was like a big puzzle and they only won when all the pieces went together without damaging each other; and they did it. I made 2 errors in my move that Big Guy for Hire was able to save me from. First, I didn't have enough moving blankets. They were able to use old bath towels and such that I had, and nothing got damaged. (Note: I have since learned you can rent cheapo moving blankets at U-Haul for $5 for a half dozen. $20 would have gone a long way on moving day.) My second error was that I had a huge, heavy elliptical which I thought would move in one piece but it turned out to be too big to fit. I had already moved the hex wrench needed to partially disassemble it. Fortunately, John had a small set of tools in his car that included the right tool. Saved a trip to the hardware. Big Guy for Hire fills a great niche - reasonably priced heavy lifters for people who need stuff moved but have their own truck/transportation. 5 stars. read more

Hubby thought we could pack up our house and move all of our shizz into self-storage on our own. I thought better and found these guys on craigslist first, then on their website. It's a brilliant concept. I don't want strangers who have no investment in MY things boxing stuff up, so I'd gladly DIY that part; they do offer that service, btw. They have no moving vans or trucks of their own, so it's up to you to rent your own. Then they come on over and load up all of your stuff, follow you (or drive the truck) to your destination, and unload it all. Rates are fair, availability is clearly listed on their website - we booked them the day before our move! - and they are professional and hardworking, not sketchy at all like some horrific movers I've seen before. Now I had been looking at my packed up (mostly) house and just wanted to cry basically. How is all this junk going to get moved? No worries, Eric and Derek worked as a flawless team and had my stuff packed up in (2) 14' truck loads. This is including appliances such as a full refrigerator! I probably should have just rented the larger truck, but frankly, I suck at estimating measurements so two trips it was. Would I use them again? Yes. No question. Dependable and efficient? John worked with my husband and I on our out-of-state move. We had about a month to plan a move from Michigan to Virginia, and we found ourselves completely overwhelmed. We settled on a high-rise apartment in Arlington, and it posed two major moving challenges: 1. It was in a crowded area, and 2. The building required you to use a service elevator to move in, and you had to schedule this ahead of time. Every moving company we contacting was extremely expensive, and wanted to charge us extra to set our delivery date. They all said we could expect our stuff within 5-14 days, and we might know the day before. This wouldn't work for us. When we found Big Guy for Hire, and learned that John accompanies you every step of the move, we were relieved. John and his assistant showed up the day before our move to pack our truck. What had taken us a week to pack was loaded in about an hour. The next day, we left early in the morning for Virginia, and I think John actually ended up leaving before us. En route, I got a troubling call on my cell phone. The girl from our complex was calling me from her cell phone: the night before our move, Virginia had gotten one of their worst storms on record. There was no power anywhere, we couldn't use the elevator, there was no where for us to park our moving truck, and she didn't know what to tell us. Naturally, I panicked. We immediately called John, who was very calm. After talking in through, the plan was to continue on and assess the situation once we arrived. As we pulled up to our complex, we saw trees down, no one was out, and all the traffic lights were dark. John waited as we went in and signed our lease. We were given flashlights, and the promise that IF the power came back on, we would have the elevator all to ourselves. John has a flight home the next day, and we knew our move HAD to happen that day. We waited around for a bit, and as my husband and I were about to book a hotel room ourselves, the lights flickered and the power came back on! We were relieved. The power came on at 6 pm, and John had us moved in by 10 pm. He worked fast, and with great care. In all the chaos, nothing was broken, or even dented. He helped us return our Uhual truck, which was also a relief, seeing as how the traffic lights were still out. During our entire chaotic move, John was calm and professional. We felt safe trusting all of our belonging to him during the drive, and we appreciated his flexibility with everything that happened. He answer all of our questions prompting leading up to the move, and treated our move like it was important to him (unlike the big moving companies that treated us like a number). We would highly recommend Big Guy for Hire to anyone moving anything anywhere...in state or out. read more

Unfortunately, I this is the 4th time I've moved in 5 years. Fortunately, this time I heard about Big Guy for Hire before making my move. The Uhaul that took my brother and I over 4 hours to load (from a garden level), John and his team member were able to unload to the new 3rd floor aparment in under 2 hours! Very impressive! This included a solid wood desk from the 50's that made it up unscathed. I found them both to be very polite, and felt at ease with them in my new home. Our experience with Derek and Tracy was top notch. Not only were they super efficient in getting our stuff loaded and off loaded, but they came prepared with extra blankets and straps to minimize scratches and scraping. We were pretty unprepared when it came to protecting our furniture, so I'm so happy that they thought ahead. Derek was also real smooth in handling our truck, which caused both me and my man a lot of stress. We parked the truck in a real tight spot, tucked in an alley way and the entire time during the move, I was worried about how we were going to back out of the spot. Then, when we were ready to drive to our new place, Derek offered to back the truck up for us. Big Guy For Hire has great communication and was very helpful during a recent complicated moving situation. I had been scheduled to move on a specific date, and then my landlady decided she didn't want to wait to start ripping out mold-filled walls until I had moved out, so I urgently had to change my move to earlier so I could get out of there before the whole place was filled with spores and dust. Big Guy For Hire tried very hard to accommodate the last-minute scheduling changes - and when it turned out that they couldn't have people available at the new time, they were willing to waive their policies and refund my deposit so that I could use the money with another moving company for an emergency move to get out of there before the mold work started. We worked with Big Guy For Hire to load our pod in Michigan for a long-distance move to New York. John was great with communication in the lead-up to our job, and our three loaders arrived on time (even a little early) and were friendly and efficient throughout the whole process. We got the supplies in advance that John recommended (moving blankets, rope/twine, and tape) to make the loading process easier. We had a lot of items (including 5 drum sets!) and were amazed that our stuff all fit in the 16' pod and arrived safely here in NY.
