This is the place if you want ice cream in downtown Billings! The staff is always friendly with really tasty ice cream! My favorite part is that they let you split two flavors for one scoop. So for those of us who want all of the ice cream, it's a win-win!
We came here after lunch downtown, and we very impressed! I got a waffle cone with coconut and black licorice ice cream. ***Warning*** If you are a fan of black licorice and would like to try this delectable confection, do not- I repeat-DO NOT wear any light colors at all, unless you want to try to get black food dye out of your clothes. I personally don't want to waste my time fiddling about with baking soda and stain removers, but I don't know what you like to do for fun. If you're like me, wear black. Trust me. The flavors are wonderfully subtle, and the coconut ice cream has shredded coconut in it. A very nice touch. My hubby had the Big Dipper sundae with maple walnut and coconut ice cream, which I didn't try but it looked great and he was quite happy with it! If you haven't tried it yet, do it.
This ice cream was delicious. We visited several times while in Billings. The huckleberry was outstanding. On our second visit, the store was all out of that flavor. Therefore, we chose the mint Oreo ice-cream flavor.
YUMMY! I made this my first stop last week, when I was in town on business. I went straight from the airport. I'm so glad they are open late. I feel like places like this tend to close early. I walked in at 8:15p and still had time. I wanted to order the flight, but it looks like it would have been too much for me. I ended up getting two scoops! I ordered the huckleberry and salted caramel. It was so delicious! I can see why this place is a popular. The ice cream isn't too rich but it's so flavorful and creamy. The staff was really nice and it was clean inside. There were tables and chairs for you to enjoy your ice cream inside. I took mine to go though.
They take card. Get the huckleberry! Check sign for special flavors. We got huckleberry and firecracker. You can ask for a cone with your bowl. We went 7/3/24 in the afternoon and it was not busy. The server was so nice and said to hello to each customer and let us try flavors. We went after burgers at burgers dine highly recommend the combo. Came here due to the food network post and recommend huckleberry for the Montana experience. The place is cute and clean
The ice cream is amazing!! Service was great as well. We came 2 nights in a row. We were not planning on ice cream but we are so glad we found this place.
Stopped in here while on a road trip and craving some good ice cream. Service was quick and friendly, even with a line out the door! the ice cream was pretty good and they had plenty of flavors to choose from. We got a vanilla and reeses, and while I think the vanilla could use a bit more flavor it was still tasty! Nice spots for indoor seating as well. Would definitely return if I was in the area again!
Excellent flavors, great service, and a spic and span outlet. We've been twice in less than a week and I'm sure we'll go again before we leave Billings on Tuesday AM.
Huckleberry Ice Cream. Need I say more? Okayyyy, if you insist. Obviously I get the Huckleberry Ice Cream every time I get a chance to stop here. I love all sorts of ice cream flavors, but you can't get huckleberry just anywhere so I need to enjoy it when I can! I always get the sugar cone but you can get a cake cone or cup instead if you prefer. I typically get a single scoop because they're huge, but one time I mistakenly got a double scoop beause I forgot and boy was that a lot of ice cream. I didn't let it go to waste though! They have a long list of flavors including unique ones like black licorice (which my dad needs to try because he loves black licorice), cardamom, mexican chocolate, and maple walnut. Of course they have plenty of staple flavors as well. They also sell sundaes, shakes, sorbet slushes, and rootbeer floats. And FYI you can also take pints and quarts to go of any flavor. I'm one of those weirdos who doesn't mind getting ice cream when it's cold out so I'm appreciative they're open year round too. If you're in the area, please go get a huckleberry scoop for me!
Bottom Line - delicious ice cream and fun atmosphere We stayed the night across the street at the Northern Hotel and after dinner we're looking for a treat. The fun bright atmosphere drew us in and we weren't disappointed Don't miss the huckleberry - you can't get this just anywhere!
Nothing little about this dipper! Delicious, creamy goodness camped out with gooey hot fudge and banana. The team at BD is all about customer service from the warm welcome to free samples and best of all no "rush" feeling crafting your order.
Just what I needed for dessert! The girl who worked here stirred me towards this combo and she hit the nail in the head! Yummy!

Years ago when our kids were young, a trip to the Big Dipper Ice Cream in Montana was a cherished event. Today, we were in Billings, Montana and gladly stood in line for a scoop of delicious ice cream. A beautiful and clean store that is well staffed in downtown Billings. A few samples were tried, but it is strawberry season and a must try. My wife ordered coconut. We moved outside to sit at the sidewalk tables to people watch and enjoy our scoops. Something must of happened as NEITHER scoop had any flavor. There were no flecks of strawberries or little seeds. Both scoops were devoid of any flavor, a true disappointment. We were both in disbelief. Perhaps, we chose the two flavorless scoops in their summer lineup. I can't answer as to what happened, but we won't return on our next trip to Montana and the Big Dipper Ice Cream. It is never pleasant when your memories don't live up to expectations. read more
Pretty good ice cream spot. Stopped by to satisfy my sweet tooth and was warmly greeted by two employees. Lots of ice cream offerings. I ended up getting the white mint Oreo. Ordered two scoops but one would have been plenty! Ice cream was good but not as good as gelato or some other places I like. Located on the corner downtown street parking (metered) so it might take a minute to find a spot. Solid option though read more

I got vanilla ice cream. Yeah I know that's pretty basic but it was pretty good! I also tried some of the espresso ice cream and I kinda wish I got that instead. But my vainilla ice cream definitely hit the spot!! :) I can't compare it to any other ice cream or custard place because it's definitely different but very good. The inside of it is small but kinda cute in a way! :) read more
Upon entering the store, I knew it was going to be a great experience because there was an overwhelming smell of sugar in the air. Wow Billings. Big Dipper Ice Cream is excellent. The ice cream is very smooth (no icy bits) and delicious. While we only tried one flavor, maple walnut, it was amazing and I'm sure all the other flavors are just as good. One of the best ice cream shops ever. read more
Big Dipper ice cream where have you been all my life? Well at least in Billings, MT. I mean I remember having to walk to Safeway or Hardee's to get some ice cream around downtown a few years back. So few options. And now there is this gem. I walked in and felt like a kid in a candy store, but instead I was in an ice cream shop. So clean, bright and new. Different flavors on the wall to admire. Friendly people greeting too. I know I tried the black licorice out of curiosity. I eventually decided on one of my favorites. Peanut butter cup. It was AMAZING! One scoop was more than plenty. I sat down and enjoyed my ice cream and let the spring sun shine on me. It is quite nice how the shop faces south so they get lots of sunshine. Makes the place shine! There really isn't much seating though. But that usually is how ice cream shops are. There are about three benches and tables. Most people probably grab their cones and head to walk around town. Don't forget to check out the swag on your way out! read more

Decent local ice cream. Flavors are a bit on the muted side but interesting. I had cardamom and couldn't really taste it. Black licorice was good. Kids had raspberry Oreo which was nice and a sorbet. Decent sized scoops. Premium price. read more

I originally came upon the wondrous joy that is the Big Dipper when I was in Missoula going to college. When they came to Billings I was elated! Same wonderful ice cream. My favorite has always been coconut (still wish the Billings location offered the coconuts sundae) but every one of their flavors is fantastic. Another fav of mine is the root beer float. Yummmm. Huge fan of this wonderful place of smiles and sundaes. read more

Got the huckleberry and the coconut. It was the worst huckleberry I had in all of Montana and Idaho. It barely tasted of huckleberry and it was artificial, which would explain the lack of huckleberry flavor. I could tell because the real stuff always has the skins of the huckleberries. I'm only giving it 3 stars because the coconut made it up for it. It was creamy and tasted like the real thing. read more
I appreciated the unique flavors (licorice, anyone?), and the samples of said unique flavors. :) The ice cream was creamy and smooth, and the servings were huge. (The photo is of a *small* white mint Oreo!) Everything tasted fresh, most importantly the cone -- really, really good! read more

Best ice cream in town! Every time we come here there's a new specials. Today it Honey Lavender, and Strawberry Jalapeño! Great atmosphere and we love to watch out the window while we enjoy our ice cream. Nothing like a smiling child's face with ice cream all over it! See you next time! Five Stars hands down! read more

SO GOOD!! There was a line out the door on a Friday night, but it moved along fairly quickly. There's indoor and outdoor seating available. They had several unique flavors and offer samples to help you decide. Tried maple walnut, huckleberry, & bananas foster (special flavor). All were delicious! Can't wait to try more flavors! read more
