I have been eating at Big Chief for over 40 years, and seen many different owners too.... Today we stopped and ordered a double belly combo with fries, my wife the same,.....first, we used our debit card for payment, it seemed we were were forced to pay gratuity on the card reader.... I do not approve of this.... The wait was at least 15 minutes, when we got home, we pulled the fries out of the bag no salt at all, and were under cooked,no salt in bag,moved on to the burger, tasteless, meat had no seasoning, small pickle, onion ring, my wife's burger and fries were tasteless too....the man who handed the bags to us didn't speak fluent English....30$ lunch ....we both fed our dogs the burger, and tossed the fries in the trash, and also the slice of tomato has no taste, with all the local farmers growing tasty tomatoes, but from them, this ends our dining at Big chief until the next owner, as we have seen many.... read more

Mixed experiences: I got the patty melt, and it was one of the yummiest I've ever had. However, this was mainly because it was especially butter-heavy. It was made with white bread, not rye, which was tasty, but was it a patty melt? The beef seemed like especially high quality, and the cheese had a nice bite. My traveling companion got a standard burger, and thought it was small and plain. I really appreciated the fun milkshake flavors on the menu, but they weren't all in stock. I got butterscotch, and found it tasty, but probably too thick. There were also a lot of ice crystals. The real disappointment was the fried pickles ("pickle chips"). I love fried pickles, but my traveling companion and I both found these oversalted to the point of being unappetizing. It's as though this batter was intended to coat something bigger and blander, like chicken. Service was nice, and fast enough. The decor isn't in great condition, but the age of the place clearly shows that people have liked Big Chief for a long time. I'd certainly give it another chance if I passed by again. read more

I visited on a hot summer day, with the temperature around 93°F. Upon entering, I hoped for some relief from the oppressive Southern heat and humidity, but was immediately disappointed--it was just as hot inside as it was outside. Still, I was on a mission to see what The Big Chief had to offer and wouldn't be deterred, despite protests from my family. We each ordered the cheeseburger combo meals and waited patiently. Once our food was ready, we decided to eat outside in the covered pavilion, where--surprisingly--it was cooler. The cheeseburgers lived up to their reputation. They were a true trip back in time, made with quality ingredients: no mystery meat, just fresh lettuce and tomatoes that actually had flavor. Long ago, every small town had local burger joint with charming, traditional names. Sadly, many were pushed out by the usual fast food franchises. We stopped here for dinner on our way to Atlanta on Friday night on the recommendation of one of my husband's coworkers. It's an old-timey drive-in with a pretty big menu -- burgers, grilled chicken sandwiches, lots of fried appetizers. It's got a nostalgic feel to it, too, which is kind of fun. A couple indoor seats at the counter and lots of picnic tables out front, though most people seemed to eat in their cars. The employees working at the counter were VERY nice and helpful. Our food came out relatively quickly - the speakers outside work well, too, so no worries about not being able to hear if you wait outside. We grabbed our food and went to the car to eat, as it was chilly. Husband got some kind of double patty cheeseburger and fries, and I had a single hamburger with bacon and fries. We love fried mushrooms so we got an order of those to share with ranch as an appetizer. The burgers were decent. Soft buns, juicy enough. Could've used maybe a little more salt or seasoning or something. I wound up taking the bacon off of mine because it was too rubbery for my preference. The fries were crispy and hot but also lacking salt. We enjoyed the homemade ranch with the fried mushrooms. The mushroom batter kind of tasted like batter you'd eat at a county fair. Not bad, but not my favorite either. The mushrooms were quite greasy, too. The atmosphere and the staff at this place really stand out. It's a convenient stop off, too. For me, however, the food was just alright. I'd come back if it was especially convenient, but probably wouldn't go out of my way. read more

This may be one of the top 5 or 6 best burgers I have ever tried. I had the Noah Burger, which had american cheese, plenty of bacon, baloney and a juicy, fried egg. The burger was juicy and flavorful. I asked that the fries be well done and they were crispy and almost perfect. One of their best selling milkshakes was grape flavored, which was a unique and tasty change of routine. I have lived in 11 states and have tried a lot of good burgers. Big Chief has been open for over 60 years they said. I would believe it. Make the trip to the Garden area. It is well worth the time and trip! Way to go! read more

I must say that I am a big fan of the drive-in restaurants. These restaurants are steeped in Americana and evoke images of times gone so when I saw this establishment, I had to pull in and give it a try. I opted for their specialty burger, which was a cheeseburger topped with fried bologna, bacon and a sunny side up egg. Since I got the combo (fairly priced at about eight dollard) which came with fries and a drink, I anticipated a fine lunch and was not disappointed. The cheeseburger was a perfect blend of meat and cheese. The fries were a great accompaniment and my iced tea helped wash it all down with. I enjoyed my lunch on one of their benches. Service was very friendly, which added to my all together great lunch. If you find yourself in this section of eastern Alabama, I suggest a visit to this establishment. read more

Perhaps in an earlier era this place had great food, but that was not my experience unfortunately. The food was not bad, it was good, but certainly nothing to write home about. The "Chuck Burger" was recommended to me since I'd never been here before. Again, it was okay, but just average. A little on the dry side and slightly over cooked. Tater tots were just your standard generic frozen variety. Even the sweet tea tasted like a commercially prepared brew. Won't bother stopping here again. read more

Jeff Word, the owner, was on site and ensured I had a sample if their grape soft serve which is a popular item at a The Big Chief. I chose to sit outside at a covered picnic table. Make the delicious meal taste even better due to the beautiful day. There is counter seating inside for those who don't care for the heat. The Big Chief is a dated A-Frame structure that is showing it's wear,but that is part of the attraction. It takes you back to a simpler time and place where music is heard from exterior speakers and the teens and families come in by the car full to enjoy a great meal. The menu is HUGE and a bit overwhelming, but the staff is very friendly and makes recommendations to help. They've got burgers, dogs, sandwiches, and tons of ice cream!
