I was unaware that it's a gay bar and I found a table away from the piano in the bar area. The crowd was already having a great time and the ambiance was good. Had a couple of drinks (not used to NY prices anymore), but they were pretty powerful so only stayed for two as I had to navigate down the stairs with a bad knee. The crowd was very friendly, met some very nice people in the hour I was there. I really enjoyed my time at Uncle Charlie's Piano Lounge.

Their website is kept up to date with all their events, including what they're teaching at the drop-in classes. You can also volunteer to help at the front door or whatever and get in for free! The style itself isn't hard to learn, especially since it's slower blues music, and it's more improvisational and connection-based than a lot of other styles. I like that the beginner classes at least broach the topic of lead-follow dynamics up front, instead of other styles, where instructors will spend an entire hour covering some exact choreography of steps/moves without really teaching how to lead or follow. Bathrooms: A bit old, but clean and functional.

One of my favorite bands - Avenida B…read more- plays here once a month and they're always fun to catch, but I've had a good time on any given Monday. My one complaint would be the mandatory coat check. It can feel a little overbearing esp. when I don't carry a purse and want to keep my light jacket and whatever I have in my pockets but you get used to it eventually. A second reason I took a star off is because it can get so crowded. Guess this is a double edged sword because you want a good party and you want great dancers but sometimes there is so little space to dance! All in all, solid Salsa spot on a Monday night and pretty much a guaranteed good time. I'd recommend Taj.
