I have never liked the pizza at Big Al's, but the subs are amazing! They are seriously the best subs anywhere. The bread is so yummy and chewy. I always would get turkey and cheese with sub sauce on the side. Everything is all toasted and just has the most unique taste. I thought the place was called Big Al's Subs, not Big Al's Pizza. I give Al's 5 stars because it was just as advertised. Pizza was piping hot, the sauce just a little spicy which is how I like it. There is seating inside with booths and round tables, soda that you can refill. We were there on a Friday night at 7 and the place was hopping. We sat on nice picnic tables on the shady deck. Nothing fancy. We had a big group (11) with multiple pizza orders. They brought the breadsticks out pretty quickly. My hubby and I had the Chicago Deep Dish - YUM. Great place to visit!! I've only has the pizza once or twice but when I did it was delicious. I've heard that the subs are amazing! My favorite at Big Al's is the Stromboli. You get to choose your own ingredients like you would with a pizza (not all places allow that). It is served on a large pizza pan and is big enough to share! Sometimes when my cousin and I go we intentionally do not share so that there's enough left that each of us can take some home. You must try it with the sub sauce. So. Delicious. The decor is a little dated but I like that. It has almost a retro feel to it. Last time I was there they still had some old video games. You order at the counter and your order is brought to the table. Very casual, laid-back place. Staff has always been very nice! read more

Pretty good pizza! If you're in the mood for some really greasy but tasty pizza, this is it. We had the hand tossed pizza with sausage, pepperoni and green peppers. I was very happy how the gentleman who took our order (it's counter service) told us it would be cheaper to get three toppings rather than two, so we added on the peppers. All ingredients tasted fresh. Be warned though: the hand tossed crust (they also offer Chicago style) is very good when you get to the end, but is thin on the part with toppings and because it's so greasy, I had to fold the pizza so it made sort of a calzone thing. Still very good! I know now why they give you forks and knives (but I refuse to eat pizza with a fork and knife so that's how I coped). The decor is very simple. White fold up tables or plastic booths. I thought it was a nice throwback that they had some arcade games I remember from when I was a kid. Great view from where you eat of the ___ lake (Sorry not sure what it is called). While I was there they only had 2/5 games working. One of which was not all that good of a game. Now on to the food. The food was very good. We got a Sausage, Mushroom, Pepperoni Chicago Style Pizza, and the regular Pizza of the same topping. It was all good till the car ride home when I got a stomach ache on the way home. It seems like it only happens to me when I have to much grease. I am proud to say that no one else had any problems. I have been going to Big Al's for many, many years and have really like their pizzas and subs. I recently ordered a deluxe pizza and it was awful. There weren't many items on it, and the quality of the items wasn't very good. I called the restaurant and complained to a staff member who only said Okay. I asked to speak to a manager, but none where available, and none have called me back. I will never go back. The place has really gone down hill. Pizza Hut and Mancini's are much better. read more

Definitely and fork and knife meal. Decor is 70's ish but that just adds to the small town atmosphere. The staff were friendly with us but a little gruff with each other. I am not hard to please...but bland pizza with canned mushrooms, pizza was wet and didn't seem cooked thoroughly. The floor was filthy, restrooms dirty, staff unpleasant and long wait. We chose pizza as a safe option while in town and didn't even get Hot and Ready quality people. They offer fabulous pizza (onions in the sauce sent my thing, but can be ordered without-FYI) as well as a ton of different subs/sandwiches of which my husband's favorite is the Poppa Whoppa. Those that get a za at Al's more than likely will be disappointed. I personally LOVE their Chicago Style, it's not "true" Chi Style, but it's good. That being said, you get two things at Big Al's in Manistee. Those that are in the "know" get a Strom with sub sauce. The other must have is any sub on their menu. I was born and raised in the Stee, Big Al's was a part of growing up, a staple if you will. I left Manistee when I was 19, one year of school, then the service. I now live in Kalamazoo and still believe that they have to open a Big Al's South here in Kalamazoo, just saying. Every single time I go back home, to this day, I get giddy days before I get there just THINKING of Big Al's. All you haters, their Pizza is not their signature. Very good pizza. Service and poor communication is what drops them to just 3 stars. I've had good service in the past but this time we called 15 minutes ahead for dine in and still waited over 40 minutes. Something's wrong when a larger party behind you is served before you. I went up to the counter to check and I could tell they had goofed. Pizza came out minutes later on the cool side. No apologies. There was no line, and the restaurant wasn't busy. When asked where to go to dinner in Manistee, anyone who has ever set foot in northern Michigan will tell you to go to Big Al's Pizza. I have to say that they do not disappoint. My brother and sister are in town visiting with my husband and I , we decided to order three pizzas for lunch this afternoon. They both shared a BLT pizza, and within four hours upon eating they both started getting instant flu like symptoms ( food poisoning ) I decided to call them to let them know, to prevent others from becoming sick, and instead was told food poisoning takes at least 48 hours ( incorrect but I felt no need to argue ) That it must have been something else they ate, ( that was the first thing we all ate today, and the only thing they shared!! ) and in a nut shell that there food is good quality so there's NO way it was them. No apology, no sympathy and no offer to refund the one pizza. Needless to say ( as my brother is in the background vomiting ) I can say with certantity we will never eat at this facility again, and I feel responsible for letting others know to prevent further illness. read more
