C has had her eye on this place for years she said. I just started seeing it about a year ago when my kid started touring University of Alabama. She intentionally put us here at lunch on our most recent trip to T town. Inside is a small town cafe feel to it with a semi open kitchen, a small salad bar, and about 50-60 seats. It's decorated like my grandmother in laws place was. Tehehe Not to hate, but I don't think very much good food comes from Tuscaloosa as a whole. The most famous good place downtown is Chuck's. It's ok at best. Most meals I have had in this area are fair at best. Not a fan. This place is better than most around town, and it's about 20 minutes outside Tuscaloosa. The dynamic duo that served us could not have been any nicer or more helpful. They went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of. Portions are ridiculously large. Prices are insanely low for the quality and amount you get. I had the meatloaf special with mashed potatoes and jalapeño cornbread. I opted for the salad for C to eat. She got the pulled pork with beans and onion rings. This is a complete 180 from the norm. The plates are normally reversed. I thought that this was funny when she mentioned it to me. Meatloaf was fucking awesome!!! C's pulled pork was moist and delicious. We both even liked the bbq sauce. Onion rings, beans, mashed potatoes were good too. I dug the cornbread a lot. Took the drive up to Berry from Tuscaloosa to enjoy Sunday lunch with friends. I ordered the shrimp, and really should have known better. Not bad, just more like frozen, pre battered. Friends had burgers, which looked really good. The pizza was underwhelming, but again, not bad, just average. I would go again if I were up that way, but not a destination place. Very friendly staff. This place was great. It took me five years to actually haul myself out of Tuscaloosa to go but it was worth it. It's another one of those "dives" that you just need to try. I went with my best friend and husband last week. Not only was the waitstaff nice, but so were the other customers! We got seated and our waitress was so sweet, she took our orders and got everything we needed quickly and efficiently. We ordered some corn nuggets as a starter and they are delicious! I had the bacon sausage pizza and my friend got the same thing. My husband had the triple loaded baked potato. You get a ton of food for a real inexpensive price! The atmosphere of this place was awesome too. All in all, this is a place I would recommend visiting before you graduate from UA or if you're just living in town. read more

Stopped here to eat on the way to Birmingham with high hopes based on the reviews on Google. 5 stars, BBQ, & pizza? we were hooked and decided to give it a try. Sweet tea was the best part of the whole shebang. Left with a sick feeling in my stomach because of all the fat on my bbq sandwich. Waited 10 minutes for service at the front desk after waitress disappeared, we could hear them talking to each other in the side seating area. The pizza that they offer here is a front runner for any nationally fixed pizzeria out there, anyone would be pleased with what they offer in the way of a pizza pie. It is a bit out of the way for most people in the Tuscaloosa area, but it is defiantly worth the drive. If they were to go city wide I am sure Pizza Hut and Papa Johns alike would have a hard time keeping up, and that is coming from a guy that does like a Papa Johns pizza. This place is a wonderful place to eat. Located 30 miles outside Tuscaloosa. It's a great restaurant. I have never had their pizza, but their barbecue is some of the best I've ever had. The baked beans tasted good and it was obvious that the beans were homeade. The spicy fries were warm when served with the rest of the food and were delicious was well. The sweet tea was yummy but my favorite thing about Big Al's was the chocolate pie. They serve coconut and pecan as well but I only tried the chocolate. Get it! It's so good!! I love this restaurant and will definitely visit more often, even though its off the beaten path. read more

If you are ever in the New Lexington area and you feel the pangs of hunger, make this Big Al's your destination. Heck even if you are not that hungry stop here for the corn nuggets! Big Al's is a great community restaurant that is outstanding in the area! The congregations visit here after services, the Sheriff Deputies all stop here after training and of course the place is a hot spot during the little league games. As you sit and enjoy your meal, you can watch the pizzas constantly flowing out the door. We have tried almost everything on the menu and the top recommendations are the Steak and Onion Rings and the Catfish with Fries. But the Spicy Chicken and Smothered Hamburger Steak are awesome too. The staff are friendly and very courteous - they know us so well, that we don't even have to order drinks, they are usually ready for us by the time we are seated. After several years of eating here, I don't know of anything bad I can say about Big Al's! Watch for the specials! read more

Our little dining "club" (two couples) traveled about 25 miles to Big Al's from Tuscaloosa on a Friday night. It's a nice scenic drive up there and we had a lot of fun. The food was excellent. We shared two BBQ plates and a couple of small pizzas. Our server was efficient, very friendly and attentive. Big Al's doesn't look "big" on the outside but can accommodate a lot of people in three dining areas. The noise level was low and everyone in sight was in a good mood and very friendly. It was a very pleasant experience. We'll definitely go back soon and recommend you give them a try. Be sure and check out their schedule as they don't make pizza every night of the week. Ate here this past Saturday - we were there right as they opened - ordered chicken breast, fried okra and salad bar - wait staff was friendly and took good care of you - chicken was good, okra was excellent and the salad bar items were good. It was worth stopping for on a road trip day. read more
